It has been even simpler than that, I made a couple of attempts and I can't remember the exact steps. Restore some messages
Hello Everyone, just wonder how to best restore some messages. I used an image to roll back my pc for 2 days and as expected the messages for these two days are now gone. I do have a backup run via TB having everything in there as well as a copy of the those folders in TB that had new emails. I have quite a few email accounts but due to the weekend only two accounts had new mail. Re: Unable to restore from backup to new laptop
Hello Achdut18, Well, having started this thread, I would like to bring it back to my problem: which is synching the use of The Bat on two computers so that I can access my accounts from either computer. You are right, let's get to your problem which, as you have seen, is not easy to solve if at all possible. Well, it would be if you used IMAP, but you are not for that. And I agree with you. ...mail is allowed to remain on the server after download for at least 90 days... I assume this is in your private domain, right? ...with respect to gmail, forever,... And I assume this is with your current setting at Gmail, right? And that you don't want to leave your email at Gmail servers *forever*, right? Otherwise, if you didn't mind, then it would be best to use IMAP. b. mail that is sent from one computer is not seen by the other computer unless I copy myself on the message AFAIK, that is normal using POP accounts, CCing yourself wouldn't be needed with IMAP (I think). c. once gmail is downloaded to one computer, it will not download to the other computer. That's because it is marked as read with the first download. When I look at the gmail settings for my account on the internet, I see that POP is enabled for all mail after a given date in 2006; and that IMAP is enabled. Thus, gmail is set up for BOTH POP and IMAP. That is my setup too, so I can access my email (by IMAP) from my phone and tablet. Have you tried to disable IMAP? I have not tried myself, but maybe doing so the account would just be (or behave) like a normal POP account like in your private domain. Why don't you crate a new Gmail account just for testing this? I like the idea of being able to download the mail to my computer rather than run the risk of having it sit out on a server in the middle of who knows where. Same here. That is why my setting in Gmail is delete Gmail's copy. The only problem, which I don't mind at all, is that after I download messages with TB those messages will not be available from my tablet or phone. So, it seems the only way to ensure that mail on both computers is synched is to use some sort of synching program. On a related thread, Adding The Bat to a new computer on a home network Jack La Rosa recommended www.wuala.com to use for synching folders on two computers. In my experience TB's internal backkup and restore is totally unreliable, and has been for years. It should either be repaired or removed ! Well, I have used the internal backup and restore facility at several occasions and have never had a problem (since v3 or so). Just did it again on my new office computer earlier this month. I have on several occasions (including, just recently, copying my TB user directories and settings over to a new Win 7 desktop from my not-so-new Win 7 laptop) used the backup/restore functionality with complete success. Obviously, YMMV... These procedures were originally done with V.2.04.7, and have since (maybe the last 5 years or so) been done with V.4.2.44.2. [I still miss using ol' V.2.04.7, though... sniff] I do have to say that, many years ago, with V.2.04.7, I did try incremental (i.e., create an update to an existing archive) backups for a short time (it seemed like a nice idea) and did get flaky results, but I since then (for about the last 14 years now, I think) I have used the complete (i.e., standard) method with complete success. I routinely make two backups - one backup of just my settings and address book, and one a complete backup - every couple of months or so, just for safety's sake. However, when I set up a new installation of a new PC, I make a fresh pair of backups just before restoring TB on the new PC. OK. Anxious to set up TB! on my new laptop, I was unable to wait for a response to my most recent post, and went ahead and followed the advice that Thomas Fernandez gave in his post from Feb. 18, 2014. a. I downloaded the .msi file for thebat_pro_6-0-0.msi to my laptop, as copied from my older computer and ran it. b. I also plugged into the laptop an external hard drive, which had a backup folder with the file, autobackup.tbk. c. When I opened the newly installed TB! on my laptop, I was prompted to designate a location for the data file and specified the default location (The Bat! in Application Data). d. I then was prompted to either set up an account or restore from backup. I restored from the .tbk file on my external hard drive. Initially, I was asked which of my accounts I wanted to restore and specified all of them. e. Next, the Maintenance Center appeared saying Restore is in progress. Please wait - it can be a long process... But almost immediately an access violation pop up appeared. I clicked ok and it disappeared, but the Maintenance Center was left hanging. No progress showed in the window, and I couldn't cancel or delete it. After about a half hour, I used Task Manager to shut down TB!. f. I uninstalled the TB! I also tried to use System Restore to go back to a point in time prior to installation of the TB!. The laptop refused to complete that process and suggested my anti-virus was preventing that from taking place. However, disabling the anti-virus did not resolve this problem, so, I gave up trying to use system restore. g. Since TB! had successfully uninstalled, I tried to reinstall TB! TB! reinstalled, but this time, I was not prompted about which accounts to set up or download from system restore, nor was I prompted to choose a location for the data files. Also, this time, when TB! opened, the folder tree showed all my accounts, but they were all empty! 10. I went to tools/restore in TB! and attempted to restore from the file on the external harddrive. The same thing happened as before: an access violation pop up appeared. This time it reads: Access violation at address 00DE7C52 in module TheBat.exe. Read of address . I clicked OK and exited out of this; however I did leave the maintenance center open even though no progress is appearing in the window. I will leave this where it is at all night, but I expect nothing to come of it. So, why am I getting an access violation message? Does it have anything to do with the fact that the backup was created by ver. 5.8.2 of TB!, but I used the 6.0.0 msi file to set up TB on my laptop? And while this is not, strictly a TB issue, does anyone know why my computer won't go to a restore point that immediately precedes the installation of the software? -- Avi Using The Bat ver. 5.8.2 on Win XP Pro sp3 BUT trying to set up The Bat ver. 6.0.0 on Win 7 Pro, on a Lenovo T430s. Re: Unable to Restore a Backup
Hello Robert, In all cases, backup fails with Error Reading File I had this persistently for a very long time and reported it in the Beta forum. I believe I raised a support ticket that got lost. My recollection is that it is something to do with account properties. Try deselecting that to see if the restore completes. I never solved the problem until I reinstalled TB! This also fixed a number of other persistent problems with filters. I had upgraded over the years from 1.62 to the current 5.x version so I guess an incompatibility crept in over that time. -- Best regards, Tonymailto:t...@parkinch.co.uk The Bat! 5.4 Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Now I can't start TB, and copying over the files (I made an image of the drive with Macrium Reflect before) doesn't work. Reinstalling doesn't either. I only get the option to repair, modify or uninstall TB, but all function give me an error message, because the files aren't where they used to be. And after deleting the Win xp partition, I also expanded another partition and now I apparently can't use the Macrium Reflect backup to go back. But, it does not overwrite what has being added after the backup. BTW, the problem was as follows. I had moved some Folders to another location. In the Filter I renamed those old folder names to something different but forgot to do so with the folders itself. I guess when I applied the filter those folders where created but did not show (strangely) in the account. Looking with Explorer revealed the folders where there with all the mails in it. which files to restore?
Hallo Fledermäuse, I just lost my main account, TB just decided to drop it, for whatever reason. Because I remembered from long time ago, I made a new account and gave it the same name as the one gone MIA. *Poof* got all my mails back, BUT only the mails, no settings, no Templates for new messages, replies and so on, nothing of that sort. Since the files are all on-the-fly encrypted I can't even tell which ones to restore? I recently retired an old email address that has literally thousands of saved messages. How to restore autobackup.tbk
Hello, My external hd crashed with Voyager inside. I have an autobackup file. Do I have to restore this file inside another Voyager built with the same password or can I restore it with thebat! pro for example as a usual backup ? Merci. TBV 3.64.01 loses customization upon restore from TB backup
I renamed a POP account in TB then decided to clean up traces of TBV in registry and USB stick and do a fresh install. Then I restored from a backup of TB. The restore process, upon first try, an error message ...error reading from backup file.. then a retry of restore completed. TBV did not restore toolbar cutomizations and window display view. Nothing major but this had not happened in a previous beta. -- steverio TB!v3.64.01 Christmas Edition TBV!v3.64.01 Windows XP Pro 5.1 Build 2600 SP2 OTFE Current version is 3.64.01 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Tools, Restore
Hello TBUDLers, After losing half my msg base and my address book (Friday 13th? - no, not really, it happened yesterday) I followed Roelof's advice on creating fictitious accounts. I thought I was out of the woods, until I discovered that nothing that I could do, would bring back my address book. I opened the address book and tried File, Import From, and even File, Open Address Book as well as the various permutations therein. No luck I have now spent several hours trying to recover my address book, which has somehow got badly corrupted. At one point, there was a huge list of cabalistic signs or gibberish. I've got Intermediate and Trusted Root CA, but none of my own addresses. What annoys me most, is that I have been backing up religiously (at least once a week), using the internal function (Tools, Backup). Now that I need to reinstall with Tools, Restore - and irrespective of the date of the back up - the Restore refuses to perform, apart from doubling up the number of messages in the msg base. I used tbkdigger to explore TB's internal backups. It was interesting to see the names of the files and attachments in each account, but even with Tbkdigger I could not see my address book. Surely it is backed up along with the msg base? If so, where is it? And why doesn't Restore do what it is supposed to do and roll everything back to where it was last week/last month ? -- Regards, Maurice Using The Bat! 2.04.7 under Windows XP Pro.1 with 256MB Current version is 2.12.00 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Restore fails
All, I am currently running TheBat! 2.11.02 on Windows XP Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600. I have 216,177 messages. I am experiencing the same problem as Timo. I also noticed that the sychronize gets the same error. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Ed From: Timo Boettcher Subject: many messages in account (Backup fails) Date: Sat, 01 May 2004 04:21:11 -0700 Hi, How many messages do you have in your TheBat!-mailaccounts? I have reached 26 mails in one account (yes, a quarter million) and though I can back it up, I can't restore it on my notebook, I always get error reading file C:\path\to\backup.tbk Is there a limit of size of a backupfile or the number of messages in a backupfile or an account that is backuped?
