Thanx. It has been even simpler than that, I made a couple of attempts and I
can't remember the exact steps. I run the setup selecting the previous folder
and setting the same encription password, then it let me choose the main mail
folder, after that all came back. It seems that I lost just a few
configuration details, nothing important.

Once you point to a copy of your mail folder on the first run of The Bat! you
should be prompted with a list of the accounts found in the folder, so just
select the accounts you wish to work with and that's it :-)

You can rename the .tbb file in the mail directory of that account.
Then copy the .tbb from the folder that you had backed into that
location instead.

Close TB! before you do all this. When you reopen it, all mails should
be there.

Restore some messages

2017-08-06 Thread Tom

Hello Everyone,

just wonder how to best restore some messages.
I used an image to roll back my pc for 2 days and as expected the
messages for these two days are now gone.
I do have a backup run via TB having everything in there as well as a
copy of the those folders in TB that had new emails. I have quite a
few email accounts but due to the weekend only two accounts had new
mail.
So I wonder if I can "surgically" replace a folder like XYZ Known with
all it's contents and leave the rest of the TB folder tree untouched
or do I need to run a full restore from my TBArchive?

Well, having started this thread, I would like to bring it back to my
problem: which is synching the use of The Bat on two computers so
that I can access my accounts from either computer.

After having placed a separate installation of TB on my new laptop for
several days, and with the situation that each computer has its own
message base, and with respect to both gmail and private domain
accounts, mail is allowed to remain on the server after download for
at least 90 days with respect to gmail, forever, I have been able to
determine several things:

a. mail on my private domains gets downloaded to both computers, so
long as the download is within the time the mail is set to remain on
the server

b. mail that is sent from one computer is not seen by the other
computer unless I copy myself on the message

c. once gmail is downloaded to one computer, it will not download to
the other computer.

When I look at the gmail settings for my account on the internet, I
see that POP is enabled for all mail after a given date in 2006; and
that IMAP is enabled.

Thus, gmail is set up for BOTH POP and IMAP.

I like the idea of being able to download the mail to my computer
rather than run the risk of having it sit out on a server in the
middle of who knows where.

So, it seems the only way to ensure that mail on both computers is
synched is to use some sort of synching program.

On a related thread, Adding The Bat to a new computer on a home
network Jack La Rosa recommended www.wuala.com to use for synching

Hello Achdut18,

Well, having started this thread, I would like to bring it back to my
problem: which is synching the use of The Bat on two computers so
that I can access my accounts from either computer.

You are right, let's get to your problem which, as you have seen, is not
easy to solve if at all possible. Well, it would be if you used IMAP,
but you are not for that. And I agree with you.

...mail is allowed to remain on the server after download for at least
 90 days...

I assume this is in your private domain, right?

 ...with respect to gmail, forever,...

And I assume this is with your current setting at Gmail, right? And that
you don't want to leave your email at Gmail servers *forever*, right?
Otherwise, if you didn't mind, then it would be best to use IMAP.

 b. mail that is sent from one computer is not seen by the other
computer unless I copy myself on the message

AFAIK, that is normal using POP accounts, CCing yourself wouldn't be
needed with IMAP (I think).

 c. once gmail is downloaded to one computer, it will not download to
 the other computer.

That's because it is marked as read with the first download.

When I look at the gmail settings for my account on the internet, I
see that POP is enabled for all mail after a given date in 2006; and
 that IMAP is enabled.

Thus, gmail is set up for BOTH POP and IMAP.

That is my setup too, so I can access my email (by IMAP) from my phone
and tablet. Have you tried to disable IMAP? I have not tried myself, but
maybe doing so the account would just be (or behave) like a normal POP
account like in your private domain. Why don't you crate a new Gmail
account just for testing this?

I like the idea of being able to download the mail to my computer
rather than run the risk of having it sit out on a server in the
 middle of who knows where.

Same here. That is why my setting in Gmail is delete Gmail's copy. The
only problem, which I don't mind at all, is that after I download
messages with TB those messages will not be available from my tablet or
phone.

So, it seems the only way to ensure that mail on both computers is
synched is to use some sort of synching program.

On a related thread, Adding The Bat to a new computer on a home

I do. But I will still suggest creating a second Gmail account, disable
IMAP and test.

Re: Unable to restore from backup to new laptop

2014-02-27 Thread Fred
In my experience TB's internal backkup and restore is totally
unreliable, and has been for years. It should either be repaired or
 removed !

Well, I have used the internal backup and restore facility at several
occasions and have never had a problem (since v3 or so). Just did it
again on my new office computer earlier this month.

I have on several occasions (including, just recently, copying my TB user
directories and settings over to a new Win 7 desktop from my not-so-new Win
7 laptop) used the backup/restore functionality with complete success.

Obviously, YMMV...

These procedures were originally done with V.2.04.7, and have since (maybe
the last 5 years or so) been done with V.4.2.44.2.

[I still miss using ol' V.2.04.7, though... sniff]

I do have to say that, many years ago, with V.2.04.7, I did try incremental
(i.e., create an update to an existing archive) backups for a short time
(it seemed like a nice idea) and did get flaky results, but I since then
(for about the last 14 years now, I think) I have used the complete (i.e.,
standard) method with complete success.

I routinely make two backups - one backup of just my settings and address
book, and one a complete backup - every couple of months or so, just for
safety's sake. However, when I set up a new installation of a new PC, I
make a fresh pair of backups just before restoring TB on the new PC.

Unable to restore from backup to new laptop

2014-02-26 Thread Achdut18
OK. Anxious to set up TB! on my new laptop, I was unable to wait for
a response to my most recent post, and went ahead and followed the
advice that Thomas Fernandez gave in his post from Feb. 18, 2014.

a. I downloaded the .msi file for thebat_pro_6-0-0.msi to my laptop, as
copied from my older computer and ran it.

b. I also plugged into the laptop an external hard drive, which had a
backup folder with the file, autobackup.tbk.

c. When I opened the newly installed TB! on my laptop, I was prompted
to designate a location for the data file and specified the default
location (The Bat! in Application Data).

d. I then was prompted to either set up an account or restore from
backup. I restored from the .tbk file on my external hard drive.
Initially, I was asked which of my accounts I wanted to restore and
specified all of them.

e. Next, the Maintenance Center appeared saying Restore is in
progress. Please wait - it can be a long process... But almost
immediately an access violation pop up appeared. I clicked ok and it
disappeared, but the Maintenance Center was left hanging. No
progress showed in the window, and I couldn't cancel or delete it.
After about a half hour, I used Task Manager to shut down TB!.

f. I uninstalled the TB! I also tried to use System Restore to go
back to a point in time prior to installation of the TB!. The laptop
refused to complete that process and suggested my anti-virus was
preventing that from taking place. However, disabling the anti-virus
did not resolve this problem, so, I gave up trying to use system
restore.

g. Since TB! had successfully uninstalled, I tried to reinstall TB!
TB! reinstalled, but this time, I was not prompted about which
accounts to set up or download from system restore, nor was I
prompted to choose a location for the data files. Also, this time,
when TB! opened, the folder tree showed all my accounts, but they were
all empty!

10. I went to tools/restore in TB! and attempted to restore from the
file on the external harddrive. The same thing happened as before: an
access violation pop up appeared. This time it reads:

Access violation at address 00DE7C52 in module TheBat.exe. Read of
address .

I clicked OK and exited out of this; however I did leave the
maintenance center open even though no progress is appearing in the
window. I will leave this where it is at all night, but I expect
nothing to come of it.

So, why am I getting an access violation message? Does it have
anything to do with the fact that the backup was created by ver. 5.8.2
of TB!, but I used the 6.0.0 msi file to set up TB on my laptop?
And while this is not, strictly a TB issue, does anyone know why my
computer won't go to a restore point that immediately precedes the
installation of the software?

Hello Robert,
In all cases, backup fails with
 Error Reading File

I had this persistently for a very long time and reported it in the
Beta forum. I believe I raised a support ticket that got lost.

My recollection is that it is something to do with account
properties. Try deselecting that to see if the restore completes.

I never solved the problem until I reinstalled TB! This also fixed a
number of other persistent problems with filters. I had upgraded over
the years from 1.62 to the current 5.x version so I guess an
incompatibility crept in over that time.

it on faith that my postings to TBUDL arrive and hope that my faith

As for the question that I was asking about partial restores, I gave
up with the Help facility and just went ahead and invoked a restore. I
discovered that the restore is very granular, down to a single folder
within a single accout or the address book alone or, etc. So I did
manage to accomplish what I needed.

Yep, just copy your mail directory to your new computer, install TB
and point it to the copied mail directory on its first run. Create a
new account and give it the name of one of your existing accounts, the
settings will be copied from disk. The other accounts should be picked
up automatically, but if they don't then create a new account with the
name of an existing account directory again.

Have a look at the following:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/RIT/The Bat! ... Working Directory
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/RIT/The Bat!/Users Depot ... all

These are the registry entries that refer to the missing drive. By
correcting these manually, you may be able to resurrect the TB
installation. However, by all the attempts to delete it, this may no
longer be possible.

After uninstalling with the program you recommended, I still got an error

So, I plugged in a usb stick, made it drive letter D, and presto, TB installed

You are right!
In my search for a solution, I looked at the registry entries, and while there
were a couple of keys (speller and one other, I think), everything else was
gone.

Fortunately, I came across a post with a similar problem and thus found the
solution using the usb stick, and then copying the files to the correct
locations on the C: drive from an image I had made a couple of days ago. After
pointing TB to the right mail directory and the shortcut to the correct
location, I seem to be up and running again!

Sure missed TB over the past two days! :)

Restore TB?

2010-11-28 Thread Susanne
Hi,

I made a silly mistake today, when I deleted the Windows xp partition
from a dual boot system, to keep just the Windows 7.
Everything went really well, but I forgot that I had set it up to
share TB between the XP and Win7.
Now I can't start TB, and copying over the files (I made an image of
the drive with Macrium Reflect before) doesn't work.
Reinstalling doesn't either. I only get the option to repair, modify
or uninstall TB, but all function give me an error message, because
the files aren't where they used to be.

And after deleting the Win xp partition, I also expanded another
partition and now I apparently can't use the Macrium Reflect backup to
go back.
All my TB files are there, but how do I point the program in the right
direction?

Thanks in advance for any help!

search for. Keep it simple so that if its somewhere you will find
in. Then check where its sitting if you find it... Note you can also
select 'last week' and *.* for the file name so you find anything

Not quite. In my v4.0.38 it asks first for the file, then the account
and here it goes. It restores that whole account without asking which
folder. But, it does not overwrite what has being added after the
backup.

BTW, the problem was as follows. I had moved some Folders to another
location. In the Filter I renamed those old folder names to something
different but forgot to do so with the folders itself. I guess when I

it can be as secure as you want it to be. I keep everything from
network passwords to online shopping and banking passwords to software
keys in it. It does the job and does it well. I just make sure to back
up its database along with everything else when I run a backup.

Another option for you might be to take a look at Mailbag Assistant
http://www.fookes.com/mailbag/ . It does a great job of handling
email, whether you want to archive old messages for safe keeping,
search archived messages, or perform a powerful search on current
email. I recently retired an old email address that has literally
thousands of saved messages. Rather than keep those in The Bat!, I can
use Mailbag Assistant to archive them and keep them in a convenient,
searchable location while giving The Bat! a break from handling all of
those old, rarely accessed, messages.

RO That's why I didn't suggest running TB with another registry set.

Let me see if I understand: if I want to see one folder in an
old backup, I would need to restore the entire tbk. I could
restore this more safely if this were done on a
different/old/spare machine where I wouldn't have to worry about
either losing messages, but setups, too.

I thought sanboxie might be able to do it on the same machine if
it were capable of holding a copy of TB! to which I could
restore, then just dump the whole thing later. With the registry
involved though shudder maybe the separate machine is the
better deal for me.

Sandboxie may be useful for something else though. Neat concept!

Tools, Restore

2004-08-14 Thread Maurice McAdam
Hello TBUDLers,

After losing half my msg base and my address book (Friday 13th? - no,
not really, it happened yesterday) I followed Roelof's advice on
creating fictitious accounts. I thought I was out of the woods, until
I discovered that nothing that I could do, would bring back my address
book. I opened the address book and tried

File, Import From, and even
File, Open Address Book

as well as the various permutations therein.
No luck

I have now spent several hours trying to recover my address book,
which has somehow got badly corrupted. At one point, there was a huge
list of cabalistic signs or gibberish. I've got Intermediate and
Trusted Root CA, but none of my own addresses.

What annoys me most, is that I have been backing up religiously (at
least once a week), using the internal function (Tools, Backup).
Now that I need to reinstall with Tools, Restore - and irrespective of
the date of the back up - the Restore refuses to perform, apart from
doubling up the number of messages in the msg base.

I used tbkdigger to explore TB's internal backups. It was interesting
to see the names of the files and attachments in each account, but
even with Tbkdigger I could not see my address book.

Surely it is backed up along with the msg base?
If so, where is it?
And why doesn't Restore do what it is supposed to do and roll
everything back to where it was last week/last month ?

Chris I changed mine a while ago and the proper address books are still

You are correct. Seems to have taken a restart of TheBat! for my new
selection to be visible as the default.

Restore fails

2004-06-14 Thread Edward M. Brown
All,

I am currently running TheBat! 2.11.02 on Windows XP Version 5.1.2600
Service Pack 1 Build 2600. I have 216,177 messages. I am experiencing
the same problem as Timo. I also noticed that the sychronize gets the
same error. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Ed

Hi,

How many messages do you have in your TheBat!-mailaccounts? I have
reached 26 mails in one account (yes, a quarter million) and
though I can back it up, I can't restore it on my notebook, I always
get error reading file C:\path\to\backup.tbk
Is there a limit of size of a backupfile or the number of messages in
a backupfile or an account that is backuped?

 Timo
