Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-04 Thread Winfried de Heiden

Hi all,

What I like:

  Its open!
both "thin" oVirt node and "fat" Linux+VDSM.
  Browser based GUI, Firefox supported.
  Spice console works just fine!

What I really would like to include in the coming releases:

Option to resize disk in user interface and CLI.

Import, upload, raw and qcow2 images from the web gui and CLI.
Importing VMDK (vmWare) would be nice as well.
Upload ISO from the web gui.
What about exporting raw and qcow2 images (and convert to
vmdk)...

Option to disable "This Browser version isn't optimal for
displaying the application". Ater 10 times it gets anoying.

Better recovery for the ISO and export domains. Currently, if
I keep my export domain connected a crashing server might cause
problems. After creating a new server en reconnecting the old
export or iso domain, it will say "it is allready connected to
another domain". The export domain is such a nice way to backup
important templates and virtual machines :)

  Multiple ISO domains.
Both export and ISO domains on local storage, iSCSI, CIFS etc.

Looking forward to the new release!

Winfried

I make a new partition
and make ext4 filesystem and

2013-01-04 Thread Johan Kragsterman
Hi!There are many promising features in oVirt, but still I feel it is just "promising", not for production. The most critical issue for me, that is preventing me from using oVirt in production, is the "single point of failure" of the engine. I wouldn't want the struggle of setting up a new engine, and all the hazards that brings, in a production environment, in the case of an engine failureSo, some sort of clustered engine, or master/slave, or whatever can solve this situation.Perhaps one of the reasons this is difficult is because of the integration of both admin portal and user portal? Then I believe it was a mistake to combine them, and that it would be better to split them.Rgrds JohanOp 03-01-13 17:08, Itamar Heim schreef:

For me, I'd like to see official rpms for RHEL6/CentOS6. According to
the traffic on this list quite a lot are using Dreyou's packages.

But I'm really looking forward to oVirt 3.2 (reading all those commit

Easier import of existing Nodes back into a new oVirt Engine would be great
- it's a complete mess at the moment (if one doesnt have a backup) - I'm
looking at this from VMware users point of view, with them, all you need to
do is point it at a server and it'll import everything that's already
there - oVirt should have the same capabilities / with some confirmation
screens that it belongs to another storage domain, etc. etc. and if one
wants to force it, but it should still be possible ...

It'd be nice if you could send me the logs from /var/log/vdsm/vdsm*
which are on the node where it looses the contact. I am currently trying
to find exactly the cause of such an issue as well and it would be
helpful if we could be provided with log files. Currently I am still
lacking them.

I will check them and let you know what I will be able to find.

If you wouldn't mind I would be referring to you for more questions if
some will come up during the search for the cause and I will let you

We are waiting for the fix to be approved.

I can't think of any workaround for this now. After restarting also you
will have the same issue while creating the next volume in the cluster.
Other operations like start/stop/add-bricks will work after the restart.

What do you mean? a client or a browser plugin?

i suppose ideally both - a browser plugin would be great as then interaction
between the GUI and the console would be seamless with the ability to use a

Re: [Users] What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-04 Thread Koch (ovido)
Hi,

First of all thanks for starting this discussion.

My feedback is mainly based on RHEV, as I'm using RHEV in our company
and on customer side. oVirt is cool as I can see what new features next
RHEV version may/will bring and what issues other users have with this
technology.

What I like:
* web based UI
* KVM as it brings the highest virtualization performance on the market
* RHEL/Fedora as a hypervisor for more flexibility
* tags and bookmarks with search filters - great for big installations
* server and desktop virtualization can be done with one gui
* open source of course ;)
* hook scripts - sooo cool!
* rest-api
* user portal - some of our customers use this as a basic cloud tool for
providing vms and self-provisioning features with accounting using
postgresql database

What I would like to see in future release in oVirt and after testing in
RHEV (most of these points are based on customer feedback, too, who
bought RHEV or where we had at least a pre-sales appointment):

* Spice-XPI for Firefox on Windows (and maybe Ubuntu):
I know it's a lot of work to build it for every new firefox version, but
providing it for Firefox LTS would be a really good start. At the moment
Internet Explorer ist required for full use of admin und user portal (or
VNC has to be used).

* ovirt-guest-agents for major Linux distributions:
- openSUSE
- SLES
- Ubuntu
- Debian

* Virtualize ovirt-engine on ovirt hosts
I know that this would require major changes due to how oVirt works
(libvirt and vdsm), but nearly every customers is asking: why can't I
install my hypervisors, create a vm for RHEV manager and configure the
environment then (in the same way as it is possible with VMware)?

* Make ovirt-engine more Enterprise ready
Compared with VMware (sorry for always comparing it with VMware, but
it's the market leader and it has many nice features which would be
great in oVirt/RHEV, too) oVirt required more tasks done on command line
or via API/Shell/GUI as features are missing in the web GUI:

- Deploy network configs on all hosts
When creating a new logical network in a Cluster it has to be created on
all hosts before it can be used. It would be great if this could be done
automatically (except for rhevm/spice/storage-networks where an IP
address of each host is required). The workflow could be:
+ create new logical network
+ click on deploy button
+ create ifcfg-files on hosts
+ make ifcfg-files persistent on ovirt Nodes
+ bring interface up
+ check if interfaces are up
+ make logical network Operational if deployment was successful on all
hosts

- Configure ovirt hosts from GUI
It would be really an improvement if all settings of the TUI (like DNS,
NTP, syslog, kdump, admin and root passwords, hostname,...) could be
configured in ovirt-engine gui, too (in hosts tab). Plus including
changing multipath.conf in Web GUI would be very nice.

- Create host profiles
Storing all configuration settings of the TUI and host tab (without ip
addresses for sure) in a profile would make changes easier and speed up
deployment of new hypervisors. I'm thinking of:
+ create a profile which contains e.g. DNS, NTP and admin passwords
+ link profile to hosts
+ change DNS in profile
+ in hosts tab you can see that there are changes between the profile
and the hosts
+ bring host in maintenance mode
+ sync profile (and maybe reboot host)
When installing new hosts (via CD or PXE) the profile can be used to
automatically configure the host without providing all settings via boot
options + configure all networks, custom multipath.conf,... Host profile
should be used for full RHEL/Fedora hosts as well.

- Update RHEL/Fedora Hypervisors from GUI
It would be nice if Fedora hosts could be updated from the ovirt-engine
GUI like the ovirt Node. Running yum check-update on host and displaying
notice if there are updates available.

- Implement resource pools
At the moment only Quotas are available (which is great, btw), but in
some cases it's necessary to implement resource pools. E.g. Limit CPU,
Memory and Network for group of test vms, but give full resources to
production vms. This could be done with cgroups.

- Clone vms
I'm missing the possibility of cloning vms without creating a template.

- Resize disk in GUI
Increasing the size of a disk would help a lot. At the moment I create
new disks and put it into volume group on vm, but resizing would be
nicer in some cases and will reduce the number of disks.

- Upload ISOs within the GUI to ISO domain

- Integrate virt-v2v into oVirt GUI
It would be cool if VMs could be Migrated from other systems within the
GUI using virt-v2v as a backend.

- Edit settings of vms before importing them
Most the of the settings like disk type (IDE/VirtIO), nic but also vm
type (server/desktop) and access protocol (Spice/VNC) can't be edited
withing oVirt/RHEVM GUI before importing them. These settings can only
be changed by editing the xml directly. Disk type and nic is risky of
course, but working for most Linux

A nice feature would be to be able to migrate guests between AMD and
Intel host machines.
KVM should be able to support it [1]. I don't know if other hypervisors
are able/can to support this. Because oVirt aims to support different
hypervisors it might be problematic. But I think offline migration
should be possible.

can you please elaborate what do you mean by offline migration?

With offline migration, I means the guest is not running while moving
it from one host to another.

I have 2 host machines for testing. One is running on a AMD Opteron and
the other Intel Xeon. Since I can not put both machines in the same
cluster, I have specified a cluster called AMD (for the opteron) and
another called Intel (for the xeon).
Now I would like to move a guest from the AMD machine to the Intel
machine. Since the CPU does not match I can't.

I'm not aware that you can't.

Ok, now is see my problem.

you should be able to move the VM from one cluster to the other.
yes, it will see a different cpu model. why is that an issue?

To move the guest I need to edit the guest and than I can change the
cluster.

Thanks,
Soeren

I assume the solution for this could be a generic cluster definition.
Something with a limited/specific cpu set equal to the qemu
configuration -cpu qemu32 or -cpu qemu64.

Soeren

 Soeren

1) I would like to have the ability to import an existing VM image from
outside as a template into oVirt, then new VMs can be cloned from this
template.
2) I would like to have an oVirt trial package based on nested-kvm. This
package will contain several vdsm node images, one engine image and one
storage several image. After the package is installed into a physical
server, the images can be started as VMs including the engine, the VDSM
nodes, the storage server. The VDSM nodes must support nested-kvm to
have nested VM on them. It is very quick and simple for a new-comer to
try the oVirt envionment.

There are purely browser-based solutions for both: noVNC (mature AFAIK)
and spice-html5 (still in beta quality, developers welcome). The problem
with both is that they require websockets on server side which is not
yet ready in qemu - spice-server implementation had to be reverted and
will need a rewrite and libvncserver gained initial support just few
months ago.

I'm sure that web-based consoles will be available in oVirt shortly

[Users] ataX: resetting link problem with ovirt 3.1 on Fedora Core 17

2013-01-04 Thread Yuval M
Hello,
We're M.Sc students at Tel-Aviv University trying to setup a basic ovirt
system with 2 hosts.
Both run Fedora Core 17.

We've run unto a problem that makes the hosts seem down from the web
management UI and stops the VMs that run on them.
this occurs on both hosts at the very same second, which leads me to
believe it's not a hardware problem:
(segfault is the name of the server. don't ask.)

Has anyone seen something like this?
any suggestions?

in fact I found the typeparameter which specifies server/desktop,
checking the output of VMs' parameters by REST (/api/vms).
Is it this very type paramter to change?

In my case, the VM was imported from KVM to Ovirt 3.0 environment
using virt-v2v. I have just found out that the VM was recognized as
desktop while expected as server .

Thanks in advance for any advise.

I'm pretty sure the REST API/SDK/CLI would allow this as updating this field

ovirt-shell is a cli tool which should let you update such a parameter
with a one liner command.

you can also use the python or java sdk's for any heavier scripting.

Hi,

You can edit the .ovf file of your vm on the export domain.

Change VmType to:
0 ... Desktop
1 ... Server

Then you can import your server/desktop vm using the engine GUI...

[Users] Missing archives

2013-01-04 Thread Karsten 'quaid' Wade
On 21 Dec I fixed the archive for this mailing list at the request of a
user.

When I did that, I failed to set the permissions and ownership for the
changed mailbox file. It remained owned by root, so Mailman was unable
to write to the archives. :( :(

I think we can fix this if anyone has a copy of all the email sent to
this list since 21 Dec. in an .mbox format.

Anyone have everything from 21 Dec. to this message I just sent (which
should hit the archives)?

[Users] Default compatibility version in ovirt nightly

2013-01-04 Thread Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I remember some time ago someone writing about compatibility version
defaults for 3.2 that should be put to 3.2.
I'm using oVirt nightly in all-in-one config as of
 ovirt-engine-3.2.0-1.20130101.git2184580.fc18.noarch

but compatibility versions defaults are still 3.1 both for local_datacenter
and local_cluster and Default Datacenter and Cluster

[Users] Subject: Re: What do you want to see in oVirt next?

2013-01-04 Thread Thomas Scofield
- Ovirt management server should be able to run as a virtual machine
managed by ovirt
- Clustered management server, active/passive, or even better active/active
- Support for additional iternal users, so monitoring and automation don't
need to rely on an external source for authentication
- guest agent should have the ability to configure portions of the virtual
machine
-- set the hostname of the virtual machine
-- configure the network information for the virtual machine
-- reset root password

 Hi Everyone,

as we wrap oVirt 3.2, I wanted to check with oVirt users on what they
find good/useful in oVirt, and what they would like to see
 improved/added in coming versions?

 Thanks,
 Itamar

Re: [Users] ataX: resetting link problem with ovirt 3.1 on Fedora Core 17

2013-01-04 Thread Marcelo Barbosa
Yuval,

Probably Your problem this with version kernel, this version not
compatible with some VDSM version, i recommend alter this is version kernel
of hosts and reboot. If do not know alter, follow the steps below:

Verifie yours vmlinuz's images:

   [root@firehome boot]# ls -l /boot/vmlinuz-3.*
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 4662160 Mai 7 2012
/boot/vmlinuz-3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4839872 Dez 11 16:11
/boot/vmlinuz-3.6.10-2.fc17.x86_64
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4839776 Dez 4 11:30
/boot/vmlinuz-3.6.9-2.fc17.x86_64

Alter your configuration in container menuentry... for kernel version
3.3.4*, example:

   [root@firehome ~]# vim /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

   ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ###
menuentry 'Fedora Linux' --class fedora --class gnu-linux --class gnu
--class os $menuentry_id_option
'gnulinux-simple-f23745bb-fd60-43b7-ac0f-6600ba582ad7' {
load_video
set gfxpayload=keep
insmod gzio
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='hd0,msdos1'
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,msdos1
--hint-efi=hd0,msdos1 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,msdos1 --hint='hd0,msdos1'
 508a2fe6-6263-4521-bf7d-83363b71edfd
else
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root
508a2fe6-6263-4521-bf7d-83363b71edfd
fi
echo'Loading Linux 3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64 ...'
linux /vmlinuz-3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64
root=/dev/mapper/vg_ovirt00-lv_root ro rd.lvm.lv=vg_ovirt00/lv_root rd.md=0
rd.dm=0 SYSFONT=True  KEYTABLE=us rd.luks=0 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
rd.lvm.lv=vg_ovirt00/lv_swap
rd.lvm.lv=vg_ovirt/lv_swap rhgb quiet
echo'Loading initial ramdisk ...'

   After reboot your host, check:

[root@firehome ~]# uname -a

Test your storage use, I believe it will be alright.

PS: Get your version this VDSM package, example:

[root@firehome boot]# rpm -qa | grep vdsm
vdsm-python-4.10.0-10.fc17.x86_64
vdsm-bootstrap-4.10.0-10.fc17.noarch
vdsm-xmlrpc-4.10.0-10.fc17.noarch
vdsm-cli-4.10.0-10.fc17.noarch
vdsm-4.10.0-10.fc17.x86_64

seems laszlo fixed the default DC/cluster[1].
i've sent this for the allinone (i'd appreciate if you can test in your

Good/useful: Open Source virtualization with a strong web management
interface. Rapidly improving, too.

wish improved: SPICE connection reliability and LDAPS support.

wish added: native ATA-over-Ethernet SAN support.

wish removed: Kerberos dependencies. Let people who want Kerb have
it, but don't force it where it's not needed. LDAP over SSL is
secure.

Many thanks to all the oVirt team for all their hard work!
