2006-01-03 Thread johnie tidwell

Hi Stephanie,I can only tell youhow theterminology is used with some of the people I have worked with...I think it may vary a little in different mediums/industries. Opening credits is the standard termin reference to the credit listing of actors and above the line (producers, director, writers, music by credits) which is usually followed by the "Title" of the movie. An "opening title sequence" is another term that is used to describe your example... the title opening creditsis sometimeslabeled as an Opening title sequence. The Title sequence is more appropriate termif the is a lot of motion design graphics or animation interwoven with your credits...like most of your Hollywood films.End credits or end crawl (the rolling credits at the end of the tv show or movie) is at the end of the short film or animation.
Not to sure about the logo at the end of the commercial/tv shows..but I have heard the term ID bumper,ID andtag used on many occasions...depends in what industry you are working in.Intros and outros are terms more specfic to broadcast news or tv entertainment news show--where a talent does voice over or appearson-camerabefore and after the video. I plan on watching the Patriots playoff game somewhere on the 7th at

could have a vloggie football watching meetup.

There's also an un-conference being planned over here:

Hi Edmund

I will still love you, if I can watch your videos on line. Unless you actually have a video ipod, don't worry about making them into MP4 just yet, concentrate on content for now, then if your subscribers can't play your videos, you can always change them at a later date. Although it is a really good idea to post all your videos in mp4 format from the start as this is standard for streaming and play back issues cross platforms, you will find there are some people especially relatives who can't view your work. It is also a good idea to post your work to a site that lets you post to your blog using flash. Dailymotion of france allows you this function, as does Youtube, that way nobody really has any issues on whether they can view your work, because it plays them using flash which is across the board.

Problem my 1GB Shuffle won't play video, I looked for the screen, but it isn't there, it must have fallen off and rolled behind the fridge or something (JOKE). [videoblogging] MP4/RSS (Was Re: The Best Codec)

2006-01-03 Thread Michael Marzio

Thanks joly. I'm really happy I joined this Ygroup. You confirmed my vague
impression that I have to offer mp4 (in addition to my current embedded
media), and that the mp4 has to be downloaded for later play as you say,
which I think implies some kind of rss-for-video technology which I know
nothing about at the moment. So I'm looking at another learning curve and
don't even know what question to ask yet.

When I go to http://feeds.feedburner.com/punkcastpodcast which you
mentioned, I see a page of rss code with an error message at the bottom
which says
The XML page can not be displayed and I don't even know if this is what
I'm supposed to looking at or not. If I asked a question it would be really
dumb and basic, like Where do I start to get an RSS feed for my own MP4
video? Or Can Bittorent be used as a free solution to 'preload' video for
the audience?

I've actually used pretty much the same spec of real for
the last 5 years on punkcast, for much the same reasons that
you mention. I give the link for the BBC download page, which
gives a pretty junk-free free install.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/audiohelp_install.shtml

I'm not interested in embedded video, however, I'm looking for the
lean-back experience, for streaming or download.

Particularly, for non qt-pro owning i-mac users, real was the
most practical free way of giving them full screen video bar M$,
I have experienced problems over the years playing back QT on
weaker PC's. - stuttering etc,

The increasing use of broadband and introduction of the VLC player
has changed things in recent times, making mpg or DIVX delivered via
bittorrent a high-quality alternative.

The advent of the video iPod, and the podcasting method, has created
a new standard, which is mp4 running around 600kbps, downloaded for
later play. Which codec to use is a matter of choice. I've seen very good
results using Xvid but I use [EMAIL PROTECTED] w/AAC at 128kbps audio.

Your question of 'Best Codec' really should be qualified with a purpose,
- if you've been following the discussion here on google video, you'll
see that the general consensus is that for embedded streaming it's
very possibly flv in flash, but that's not much good for offline play.

I'd suggest you do, as I do, for continuity and backwards compatibility,
continue to offer real on your site, and offer a podcast of higher quality
mp4
for those that are up to speed.

A feedburner page offers an easy link to such content, see
http://feeds.feedburner.com/punkcastpodcast

Hi Johnie,

Could you shed some light on this subject for me. In american TV show the credits seem to go on for about 7 to 8 minutes into the show, sometimes even past the first commercial break, is this due to crediting by laws or space on the final crawl issues? I have always wanted to know why, even parodied them, it seems that sometimes the credits are in twice, once at the start and once at the end.

I'm guessing no. The WordPress devs aren't too big on

I think that this medium, while it will probably never take

next to nothing, regular old people, the right to be heard. It
does
so with moving pictures, which has been pretty much the sole
realm
of corporate media since moving pictures were created.

 Exactly.

If a picture tells a thousand words, how many does a well made
film
  piece tell?

Regular people simply are not allowed to say that much.

Pessimist. pick up you're camera or mic or pen... we're

You can only say that much if you are making money on it, or if
you
have the money to buy it. You have to earn the right to speak
that

What does the media stand to lose to Vlogging? Billions in lost
ad
revenue? Control over information? Exclusivity? Maybe their
customers will develop their own distribution system and cut
them

knows?
But one thing is for sure, we threaten them, lots.

I think actually... I have this weird theory... that they
ironically
have much to gain... but much like all my ideas it's wholy
unsubstantiated Except for what's happening in the blogging
and
news world with certain large newspapers and certain hyper local
ones
that are getting the hang of how to work with bloggers not
against
them. Also it's being discussed as an aspect of long tail
theory... I
call it the breadth vs. depth debate... My point is as the
breadth
of media widens... there will also be tremendous growth and at
least
some of that growth will happen in the mainstream media tool
Why?
because intellectual property markets are appreciative goods...
meaning the more people are aware of them and appreciate them...
the
more value they gain. Our media industry is big... but it doesn't
have access to the rest of the world market... ironically as it's
decentralized and deregulated it will be introduced to vast new
markets... vast new markets with a new appreciation for American
Film... We're seeing this for example with the NY Times and
Washington post... I think their value and indeed their markets
are
larger than ever in this world of millions of bloggers... we need
sources of record now more than ever... They may not steer the
debate any longer (not that they have for the last half the
century,
radio then TV took over)... but they are now the recorders and
aggregators and pulse takers of the conversation. And as the
NYTimes
pay only archive indicates they think their historical record is
where their value is at... though... I'm not totally agreeing on
that.

[videoblogging] Re: Film Terminology Question

2006-01-03 Thread Bill Streeter
Yeah I agree with that. Credit rolls are really obsolite, but it's
going to take some changes in editing style to work around getting
rid of them. When I first started posting video on the web I would
think film when designing credits, but I soon realized that most
people aren't going to be able to read titles like that on the web.
Now I try to use large bold type over video (most of the time)
rather than black and I discovered that people actually will read
those. For some reason a lot of people look away when you lay text
over black. I'm not sure why that is. Maybe we've been trained that
black means the end or something.

 their schedule.

So you either put the credits somewhere else where the real estate
isn't so valuable or try to make the typography so clear and bold
that
  it can withstand resizing.

I'm a big proponent of getting rid of the credit roll alltogether,
and
putting a permalink on the close and all the commercial bumps.
There
are some downsides to this, of course. As an audio guy, first on my
list is there's no longer a place to put that music cue that didn't
work where it was supposed to, but is cool anyway, or the pop song
the
megastar did for your movie that you hate but have to include for
 marketing reasons.

yes, but generally they suck.
They are also mostly focused on streaming video (see: Verizon Vcast)
because it is easier to charge for. Phone companies don't make money
selling phones, they make it selling services. I don't think they're
too interested in making it easy for people to download video with

Re: [videoblogging] Yahoo is now making Tv for the web

2006-01-03 Thread Joshua Kinberg
I think Yahoo! was dealt kind of a blow lately when MTV decided to go
with Microsoft as the partner for their MTV Urge Music and Video
Store.

Yahoo's offices are literally across the street from MTV in Santa
Monica. I bet they were pretty burned by that.

Regardless, I do think there is real potential to create original
content on the internet... an upstart TV network that doesn't even
exist on TV. But, I don't think it will come from an established brand
like Yahoo! Instead it will be an independent, sort of like Gawker
Media or Weblogs Inc. before they were acquired by AOL. Eventually,
this independent network will get big enough to be acquired by an AOL,
Yahoo!, or other content network... heck, maybe NewsCorp.

i doubt this is true... Mac OS X is based on UNIX.
So is Linux. In fact, many Linux programs will run on Mac OS X and
porting Linux to Mac is generally pretty easy (though sometimes not as
easy to go the other way if a Mac program has some Mac dependencies).

There is more than Apple. Much more. I believe that video creators,

content, more creators, more devices, more software, more
marketplaces, more business models, and more ways to experience and

Well, I think there HAVE been choices - Treos, Creative Players, just as there
were choices
in the MP3 player market. (I remember my first Rio). But giving an audience
choice
doesn't necessarily lead to more choices, it usually means less in the end, as
the popular
choice gains primary market share and market consolidates. But what you lose
in
multiple formats and devices, you gain in critcal audience mass.

It'd be fascinating to hear from videocasters who are currently featured in the
iTMS how
much their subscriptions increased over the holiday as many people unwrapped
their
video iPods for the first time and went looking for content.

[videoblogging] Greetings and Many Questions

2006-01-03 Thread amayesd
Hello Video Bloggers,

I am new to this so bare with me. We are working on developing a video blog
for our
company. We have purchased Moveable Type is the foundation for building and
publishing our blogs on our own domain.

It seems to me from reviewing free vlog and several other online sources that
one needs
multiple parties involved in order to actually get the blog with video content
both
published and podcastable ...

1. You need a Blog Host - in our case Moveable Type on our own domain. This is
where
the blog is both published and viewed publicly. All blog entries would be done
here and
would need to reference the video file on a separate host ...

2. You need a separate Host for the video files - Our Media, Blip TV, or uTube.
 This is only
where the video file is stored and referenced by the Blog.

3. RSS Feed Enclosure - a 3rd company ie FeedBurner then provides an enclosure
and feed
address for your blog so that RSS readers and podcast readers can access and
subscribe to
the blog data and video files.

The difficult part of this for me is that none of this is integrated in anyway.
 I am
wondering if anyone (ie Moveable Type) is developing an integrated system that
allows for
unified publishing of the blog entry along with uploading the video file in
various formats
and creating all the neccessary RSS and PodCasting Feeds. And doing all this
so that a
company like ours can host this uniformly on our own domain.

Our Project ...

If anyone has questions about what we are trying to accomplish please visit our
original
site for LifeSeens at

http://www.ChooseCast.com/Lifeseens

This is published without blogging software and only as unmanagable static
pages
through frontpage. It is also published using Flashbased Video. You can then
go to our
test site for republishing this same blog using Moveable Type at

http://www.ChooseCast.com/Charlotte/Lifeseens

This was published with Movable Type using Flashbased Video and with a
secondary file in
iPod Quicktime for podcasting. An RSS feed is available at ...

feed://www.choosecast.com/charlotte/lifeseens/atom.xml
(the feed generated by Moveable Type)

and

feed://feeds.feedburner.com/choosecast/charlotte/lifeseens
(done with enclosures)

This feed is now available in iTunes if you search for lifeseens. Neither
feed however is

Eh. Sorry for not catching this thread guys... I have been traveling in Thailand-Cambodia (hint -- expect at least one vlog from there... though its not going to be too sunny), and shooting my documentary on Tuktuks/Rickshaws in four Asian locations. But yes... it would be outstanding if some of you guys drop in to Mumbai. [videoblogging] Re: Greetings and Many Questions

2006-01-03 Thread Bill Streeter
This isn't exactly true. The reason that FreeVlog advocates multiple
services is because of the free part, and also to make people
aware of all of the options available. You can easily use a single
system like Wordpress on a purchased hosting plan and not use any
third party services. This would probably be the best solution for a
business video blog since there might be some user agreement issues
with using some of the free services for commercial purposes.

Also I might point out that one can always use Blip.tv as a singular
service as well, as they offer a blog, video hosting and RSS feeds
to all their members. But again I would check the user agreements
for commercial use.

That's my point... I'll be at CES and will look for as many players as possible.
This is still very early going in all of this. Video iPod is now about
2 months old. I'd hardly say it has the entire market captured. There
are so many stakeholders in this game that I highly doubt a one ring
to rule them all solution will pan out. The iPod is definitely cool,

Also note that part of the FreeVlog philosophy is not only free but
also don't host anything yourself. Thus they rely solely on third
party solutions in the tutorial (Blogger + OurMedia/Internet Archive +
FeedBurner).

If you are willing to pay for a server and wish to do more/have more
control over the process, I would definitely recommend MovableType,
WordPress as a solution. You can also host your videos on your own,
but this could get expensive in terms of bandwidth costs if your vlog
begins to become popular.

Rocketboom, for instance, now has over 130K downloads per day.
Rocketboom does not use any third party services. They pay for hosting
themselves, which is not cheap though its certainly way less expensive
than it used to be a few years ago.

[videoblogging] Re: more players other than iPod

2006-01-03 Thread Robert Spiro
All the cellphone Carriers have closed content decks -- so you need an
express partnership to stream video to phones on the network.

Interesting that MoBuzz TV, which is specifically targeted at mobile
phones, hasn't formed any partnerships in the US. They do have a
partnership with Vodafone Spain, to stream video segments to subscribers.
I think the European carriers are more open than the US carriers to
partnering with independent producers.

MobilCasts (www.mobilcast.com) lets you listen to audio podcasts on your
phone in the US, but they only support a limited number of phones, and you
need to have a data subscription, which is a relatively expensive
add-on. Regardless, I wonder when they'll start to support video
podcasts.

It would be great if a company like MeFeedia or FireANT formed a
partnership with a Sprint or a Cingular, so that you could download a
mobile app to stream video feeds. But there's no revenue model there, and
like Josh said, the phone companies want to charge for video. Wishful
thinking...

 yes, but generally they suck.
They are also mostly focused on streaming video (see: Verizon Vcast)
 because
it is easier to charge for. Phone companies don't make money selling
 phones,
they make it selling services. I don't think they're too interested in
making it easy for people to download video with their computer and then
sync it to their phone for portable viewing.

There could be revenue there... dunno, its not something we've looked
at too seriously with FireAnt.

There's certainly revenue for the cellular providers since they charge
for the amount of data consumed. There could be revenue by charging
producers to particpate in such a program to make their feeds
available to mobile phone subscribers (and provide stats back to them
on their distribution). There could be revenue if you charged people
for the content (ringtones model), or wrapped it in advertising...
These are just off the top of my head, obviously nothing brand new
there, but could be an opportunity for some... not sure if its
something we'd want to do with FireAnt though.

Regardless, I do think there is real potential to create original
content on the internet... an upstart TV network that doesn't even
exist on TV. But, I don't think it will come from an established brand
like Yahoo! Instead it will be an independent, sort of like Gawker

this independent network will get big enough to be acquired by an AOL,
Yahoo!, or other content network... heck, maybe NewsCorp.

Things are just getting warmed up.Ha! "one ring solutions"  I trademarked that concept you can't use it. :)  LOL.  Of course I'm joking use it all you like, BUT... there are a couple other thingsa) the nokia 770... big 600x800 screen in a tiny handheld... runs debian I believe... plays umpteen different video formats... more than most computers... completely connected via wifi... doesn't have a lot of built in memory much like the PSP, but it supports flash media just fine... so what I'm saying that is in addition to just browsing and watching videos on it one could actually potentially put an open source aggregator like DTV on it and aggregate videos directly to the device... ...or you could just browse and watch... or you could just sync... or just download for later... whatever you like.  Just get a 1gig or 2gig card.b) cell phones... I do believe this market will open up... because cellular providers are interested in paying off the upgrade of their band... right now they've tried to cover costs with big exclusive partnerships, but they have NOT blocked other services... in fact there is a war going on over the internet on cell phones... i.e. getting your gmail on your phone or using other services... and I believe that network neutrality will win out...   for one simple reason... if they want to pay for their band then the best way to do that is let a whole host of internet services run over their phones... there's already an infinitem of rich content out there... it doesn't make much sense for cellular companies to block all other services just to sell $2.99 ringtones... and a few dozen videos not when for example all their business clients have their own specific uses and tools that they need access too... and not when there's an infinite and rich amount of content and services all over the web... this would be akin to a small country trade boycotting the rest of the world... makes no sense... they'd be boycotting themselves... I believe it'll shake out, this year in fact, but we're still in the very early game... so it's a very argumentative point... so please feel free. What I really, really want to hear though is about rboom.com... it may not be getting hardly any traffic at all, but any stats Andrew could give us would be tremendously helpful... how many visitors  any information on their phones or networks repeat visitors?  Anything at all. Also, mobuzz did some stuff in this space... I'm halfway through this book called Pinball by Jerzy Kosinski about this pop star who writes these great songs, people compare him to John Lennon, everyone loves his music, but he's unknown to the public, a shadow figure, never reveals himself.
They say the intrigue caused by his evasiveness is just as powerful at driving up his popularity as the creativity of his music. It also talks about the crossing of cultures, the popculture fastfood american way, and the old style classical music loving arts and entertainment elite.

Then email ourmedia at kornyhiv (at) hotmail.com with the URI and they'll add

The opportunity has been there...Apple just stepped into it. Not as the first player, but as, arguably, the most stylishly clever one.Me, I can't afford no stinkin' iPod, so I'm more interested in the more affordable devices. I picked up an iRiver audio player last year for this reason, and I'm so glad I made that choice. The iRiver has so many more of the features it turned out I wanted (though I didn't know it at the time). We have an iPod Shuffle now, too, but you wouldn't believe how much trouble I've had with it hanging both the PC and the Mac in my home.
Since I'm travelling through iRiver forums now (such as Mistic River at http://www.misticriver.net/ which is comparable to iPod-enthusiast forums), I've been hearing a great deal about iRiver portable media (video and audio) players over the past year. There's been a lot of hoopla about some of these devices, but iRiver doesn't have nearly the marketing muscle Apple has, so we don't hear about them.

2006-01-03 Thread Harold Johnson

Yes, I recall reading that article; I definitely recommend it. The bitch of it is, Cingular was the only mobile carrier willing to accept Apple's ROKR phone, knowing full well they'd be (potentially) losing the money they could have received from a phone that was able to wirelessly download music using their (Cingular's) expensive Internet connections. In other words, it has the potential to cannibalize their sales of downloads. It's possible they chose to make the deal because they'd still be perceived as Cool for having the only phone that could play iTunes.

Also I believe Eric Rice could give a little insight into delivering

[videoblogging] Real People Network

2006-01-03 Thread JD Lasica
Thought some of you would be interested in this.

I've been blogging since early '01 and videoblogging for a year or so,
and have been reluctant to launch yet another blog. But I've become
convinced that there's value in creating a vlog that's focused almost
entirely on the videoblogging phenomenon.

So I spent the holiday weekend scratching out css code from the ground
up and came up with this:

http://www.realpeoplenetwork.com

I realize that some of the design decisions (featuring apple's video
iPod, natch) will rub some vloggers the wrong way. I also think a year
from now, a heck of a lot of us will be using H.264.

Be that as it may, this is just one more pebble in the growing vlog
pond. Real People Network is geared mostly for newcomers to the
vlogging world, who don't know about rss, or bittorrent, or how to
find free video. The ability to download photos via BitTorrent is an
interesting touch.

This is version 1.0, so I'll be adding info about other devices that
play blog video.

You'll find plenty of broken links over the next week or so, but the
design's essentially done.

I've only been able to test it on a PC (firefox and ie) and 15-inch
Mac Powerbook (firefox and safari), so if you see anything that looks
funny in other displays, please let me know.

Looking forward to seeing some of you at Macworld next week!

And all this time I thought I was more of a ladies man... :-)
Certainly not as much as the dream version of Andrew Baron though

But still, I need to get you on tape one of these days, Josh, even
 though you're a guy's guy ... :~)

Re: [videoblogging] Film Terminology Question

2006-01-03 Thread johnie tidwell

Hi Paul,I think it has something to do with staff writers/producershave it in theircontracts/deal memosto be credited at the beginning of the show. The credits placementhave been standardizedover theyears-- it is the work of the writers and producer's unions do protect these rights. Creditsare considered as being valuable as salaries for the show...in some cases it is the most important cause it can promote ones career and value in the industry. It is funny how serious it is taken in Hollywood. It seems that sitcoms and some police dramas that have a large staff of writers are credited as producers...and placement is also negotiated by the writers and their agents. There is an obligation from the production company to credit the above the line and many of the key personnel for
below the lineunfortunately not everyone is credited or guaranteed credit in the lower positions...otherwise it would probably take a good 15 minutes to credit everyone that worked on the show.Johnie Tidwell, Jr "Animated Lifestyle in a Cartoon Culture" cartoonmogul.com entertainment www.cartoonmogul.com Paul Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Johnie,Could you shed some light on this subject for me. In american TV show the credits seem to go on for about 7 to 8 minutes into the show, sometimes even past the first commercial break, is this due to crediting by laws or space on the final crawl issues? I have always wanted to know why, even parodied them, it seems that sometimes the credits are in
twice, once at the start and once at the end.PaulOn 3 Jan 2006, at 09:34, johnie tidwell wrote: Hi Stephanie,  I can only tell youÂhow theÂterminology is used with some of the people I have worked with...I think it may vary a little in different mediums/industries.  Opening credits is the standard termÂin reference to the credit listing of actors and above the line (producers, director, writers, music by credits) which is usually followed by the "Title" of the movie. An "opening title sequence" is another term that is used to describe your example... the title opening creditsÂis sometimesÂlabeled as an Opening title sequence. The Title sequence is more appropriate termÂif the is a lot of motion design graphics or animation interwoven with your credits...like most of
your Hollywood films.  End credits or end crawl (the rolling credits at the end of the tv show or movie) is at the end of the short film or animation.  Not to sure about the logo at the end of the commercial/tv shows..but I have heard the term ID bumper,ÂID andÂtag used on many occasions...depends in what industry you are working in.  Intros and outros are terms more specfic to broadcast news or tv entertainment news showÂ--where a talent does voice over or appearsÂon-cameraÂbefore and after the video. In this case the on-camera talent introduces the segment at the beginning of the video segment and closes on-camera the segment at the end.  Johnie Tidwell Jr. "Animated Lifestyle in a Cartoon Culture" cartoonmogul.com entertainment www.cartoonmogul.com

Is it also called an intro? (an example might be Josh Leo's opening animation-with-sound at the beginning of his posts) When you have a short video or animation at the end of the post, what's it called? What about when doesn't have credits in it? (an example of this might be the beer/CC logo sequence at the end of my vlog posts, or-- more commercially-- the "Grr Arg" from Mutant Enemy at the end of Joss Whedon TV shows) Is that a closing sequence? End credits? End titles? I've been calling them intros and outros, but I know the second one is made-up, I'm just hoping
it was made-up by someone industry-famous and not just by my twisted little mind. 2006-01-03 Thread johnie tidwell

Yes, from what I have been hearing under the radarthe video ipod is only the tip of the iceberg ...although they got the headlines of 2005it seems like itis going to allmerge into the mobile industry in a very short time...I speculate that the Video ipod will either have to evolve into the mobile marketor become comparable to the atari of the 70s/80s or mp3 players from a few years ago. With regard to content, I would keep an eye on the mobile industry and opportunities to create short content for this industry.Johnie Tidwell, Jr. "Animated Lifestyle in a Cartoon Culture" cartoonmogul.com entertainment www.cartoonmogul.com Stephanie Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yep.
