I don't think so as I live in the UK. As Sieghard mentions, I may have to wait

As for foreign TV channels, no such luck. There are really no actual TV
channels available, just services like Netflix, YouTube, internet radio
stations etc. There are some sports related things, but since I am not into
those I don't know much about that.

But I think just the ability to Airplay from your phone to the TV and having
access to your iTunes library on the TV etc. is worth the $99. There are
also rumours that probably not too long in the future you will be able to
install apps on the Apple TV and that of course may open the possibilities
 for more TV options.

I've just found out that my tv is indeed capable of taking an HDMI

I just need to find out what else I can do with Apple tv, for instance,

 Hi Andrew,

If you have an LCD flatscreen TV you do actually have HD and it should
have HDMI inputs unless you mix up the terminology/technology here. Is
your TV still a big box that is a foot or more from front to back or
is it a flat, relatively thin unit? When I bought my Sony LCD TV about
5 years ago they were not nearly as thin as the LCD or LED TV's are
nowadays, but it still is only maybe 3 or so inches thick. Even if
your TV does not have HDMI inputs, you could get around this if you
have buy a home theatre receiver or speaker system and unless you want
something of higher quality which would cost maybe between $800 and
$2,000 you can get entry level systems for $300 or $400. Those should
have HDMI inputs and also still have analogue outputs so you could
connect your older TV and the receiver would convert the digital
signal to an analogue one for your TV. Of course you can pick up 32
inch and even 37 inch and 40 inch LCD TV's for not too much money
these days especially if you wait maybe until a good sale like around
Black Friday or Boxing Day and the Apple TV is $99 so it doesn't break the
 bank, either.

 Take care,
 Sieghard

Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would
make little sense to do this only when an HDMI connection is used,
after all, HDMI is still a digital connection except that it
includes video as well as audio whereas the optical connector is
just for audio. In any case, if you are interested just buy it

I think you are actually getting notifications from your notifications centre.
Go into settings notifications Mail. Turn off alert style notifications for
your favorites and For all email accounts.

Having mailset to fetch manually might actually make this worse. Because when
you access your mail account it will then check for new mail and give you all
the notifications at once.

 Dear Alex and All,

I have, as this is very important, firstly checked with our internal finance
team, and then with HMRC directly.

You cannot, repeat cannot, get nil rated VAT relief on items purchased
within the UK which are, so to speak, off the shelf none adaptive
 technologies.

The simple rule of thumb is; if the item comes right off the shelf, and can
be used without modification or alteration by the disabled person, then it
 does not qualify.

Yes, the iPhone has Voice Over built into it, as do all Apple products, yet,
the same inclusive or access technology is included in all of Apple's
products. This is not a specific modification for the blind user.

As such, Apple's products do not qualify for VAT nil rating under this
 section of law.

They directed me to the below text, which I have, for ease, copied and
 pasted below.

It should be noted, that if you obtain a product without paying VAT, where
you should have, you are as liable as the vender. In other words, it is not
a defence to say,'well, Apple gave me the VAT nil rating…

Goods and services exempt from VAT

In accordance with group 14 of the zero rate schedule to the value
 added tax act 1983.

Blind and partially sighted people, and charities working on their
behalf, can buy certain goods without paying VAT on them. This relief
 from VAT also extends to:

 - the provision of services to adapt items for use by, or to meet the
needs of, a blind or partially sighted person
 - spare parts, accessories, repair and maintenance of such goods and
 adaptations.

Goods which have been designed solely for use by disabled or blind and
partially sighted people and which are for personal or domestic use only
 will be zero-rated for VAT.

This would include such items as:

 - CCTV reading aids
 - braille display units
 - braille embossers
 - speech synthesiser units
 - speech output and character enlargement software.

Computer systems which are specially designed and manufactured solely
for the use of disabled people may qualify for a composite or reduced
rate of VAT where components and software similar to the above are
 included in their manufacture.

Training in the use of such computer systems may also qualify for a
reduced rate of VAT for individuals where the equipment is used for
personal or domestic use. You should check with your supplier regarding
the amount of VAT to be charged when discussing purchase of you computer
 system.

Relief does not apply to general purpose goods used by disabled people.

Corrective spectacles and contact lenses are not relieved from VAT.

If you need to have any general-purpose goods adapted to meet your needs
as a disabled person, so that you can use them, anything you pay to have
them adapted is exempt from VAT, but you would have to pay the normal
 rate

technology for everyday convenience. Voice Camera Pro was also created to help
individuals who are unable to engage with the device using their hands.

If you like using Siri, iPhone Voice Controls, iTranslate Voice or Dragon and
enjoy photography apps such as Camera+, Instagram, Hipstamatic, Facebook
Camera, Color Splash or SocialCam, Voice Camera Pro is the app for you.

Say the keywords in the Command List to use camera functions, shoot pictures
and share them in Facebook, Twitter or by email with our hands-free, Speech
Recognition Technology (SRT).

You can also create your own Custom Camera Commands to control camera functions
in any language. For instance, if you wish to say the word GO to take a
picture, type in the word GO in the custom command field and say Switch to
turn on the Custom Commands. Now when you say GO, Voice Camera Pro will take
a picture.

Version 3.0 comes with the following voice commands:

1. Camera - Launch the Camera
2. One - Take a Photograph
3. Two - Take 2 Consecutive Photos
4. Three - Take 3 Consecutive Photos
5. Four-Take 4 Consecutive Photos
6. Switch - Switch Front to Back Camera (4/4S/iPad 2/3 Only)
7. Flash - Change Flash to On - Off - Auto (4/4S Only)

15. Custom - Launch Custom Commands
16. Info - Launch Info Page
17. Bye Bye - Close the Application
18. Back, Send, Cancel, OK, Relaunch, Yes, No - Functional Commands

Tell us what types of voice activated features you would like us to add to the
application. For example, if you’d like us to enable a voice command that takes
10 pictures at once or pictures in black and white, let us know and we’ll add
the voice command. It's that simple!

Since Voice Camera Pro is 99% accurate in quiet, controlled environments, we
advise our users to use their headphones to control the app in loud places.

The Speech Recognition and Activation Technologies found in Voice Camera Pro is
provided by Creaceed, based on Julius and Flite.

We combined technologies developed by Tokyo's University of Science, Carnegie

Were you able to find the settings? On the screen, what I see is speak, 5,

all goes silent, and I have to remove from the switcher and restart to get
anything.

Take care,

Apple has made the Apple TV accessible with Voiceover and it would

RE: voice-activated camera app for Iphone, Ipad and more.

2012-10-17 Thread Thom
Hi there, I'm not Kawal, but when I was sighted, I was a professional
photographer.
To get a subject in the picture, you want it to be at a 90 degree angle from
the face of the camera or phone.
Hold the phone with two hands, the left near the up volume button (that will
take the picture), and the right hand on the right side of the phone. Try
pointing, with your right index finger at what you'd like to line up with.
When it's aligned, click the top volume button to take the picture.

Here's a note.
What will fit into the frame, or viewfinder, is about the same amount of
distance you are away from the subject. To get just the face and shoulders,
you should be alright about 3 feet (an armslength) from the subject. If you
want their full body in the picture, you will have to back up as far away
from them, as they are tall. Then back up a little more to give you a little
more space around the subject. Now aim at the middle ( their belly), and you
should be ready to take the shot

If you atried to take a full length shot and aimed at their face, the face
would be in the middle, a lot of space above their head, and their legs
would be cut off about the knees.

If you leave yourself a little extra space on all sides, the picture can be
cropped after it's taken. Cropping is cutting out just the area that you
want to keep. .

I hope this helps,

Thom

Question on Powering On IPhone

2012-10-17 Thread Lisa Larges
Hi All,

As a totally blind person, I feel a little mystified when I have to
completely turn off my phone and then turn it back on again.

I'm never quite sure how long to hold the power button, and then, how long
to wait before trying again.

I'd love it if someone could go through in detail about the start up
process:

How long should I hold the power button?

Is it possible to hold the button too long?

What happens on screen during the power up phase?

How long between the time when the Apple Logo comes on and when I can expect
VoiceOver to come up?

I'm guessing there may be some variations from start up to start up, but if
I could have some good parameters, that would be really helpful.

Also, knowing what's happening on screen (if anything) can be useful to know
for troubleshooting.

Anyone else's tips would be great too.

Thanks

Lisa

Hi, Lisa,

I usually hold mine down for about five seconds. I wait two minutes and expect
the shrill beep, followed by VO reading the home screen. This is on an Ipod

happening. Mostly I clear stuff out of the App switcher and see if that helps.

mlb at bat

2012-10-17 Thread David Gross
I am using a iphone 3gs, and still using ios5.11.
When I select a audio game, I close the gameday audio window. I wait
about a minute, during this time, I can hear the audio volume fade
slightly, then come back to full volume.
Then I tap the home button, then lock the screen.
The audio player has remained on, and I have been able to listen to
all the playoff games.
I am getting the TV feeds, and I did not purchase MLB TV because I can't see it.
So how is it that I can get video during the playoffs?
Not complaining, just curious.

Yes, for some reason or another. That part of the app issue hasn't been
addressed. What I do is as someone suggested on this list a couple weeks back.
I double click the home button to bring up the app switcher, I then single tap
the home button to go home. This will leave the audio in tact playing. I use
Tunein to listen to ESPN radio if I'm not interested in hearing a teams

Although I can use the app, it still goes away when the phone goes in to
screen-lock mode. When I go to home, as well. If I shut voice-over off it stays
longer but still goes away after about 20 minutes. A possible work-around is
to listen to the play-off's on ESPN radio through that app.

One more question though, are you pointing with the index finger near the
top of the phone, middle or what? I'm guessing you are pointing with it
near the top along side the camera, roughly the same height as the up
volume
is on the left side, but not sticking out so far that it becomes part of

Hi there, I'm not Kawal, but when I was sighted, I was a professional
photographer.
To get a subject in the picture, you want it to be at a 90 degree angle
from

the face of the camera or phone.
Hold the phone with two hands, the left near the up volume button (that
will

take the picture), and the right hand on the right side of the phone. Try
pointing, with your right index finger at what you'd like to line up with.
When it's aligned, click the top volume button to take the picture.

Here's a note.
What will fit into the frame, or viewfinder, is about the same amount of
distance you are away from the subject. To get just the face and
shoulders,
you should be alright about 3 feet (an armslength) from the subject. If
you

want their full body in the picture, you will have to back up as far away
from them, as they are tall. Then back up a little more to give you a
little
more space around the subject. Now aim at the middle ( their belly), and
you

should be ready to take the shot

If you atried to take a full length shot and aimed at their face, the face
would be in the middle, a lot of space above their head, and their legs
would be cut off about the knees.

If you leave yourself a little extra space on all sides, the picture can
be

cropped after it's taken. Cropping is cutting out just the area that you
want to keep. .

I hope this helps,

Thom

Pablo,

There is no monthly cost or any subscription cost.

I don't know anything about the Honeywell and as to how accessible it is,
but there really isn't much reason to look at it since a few of us on the
list use the Radio Thermostat product, it works well, it's affordable and
is

accessible and in my opinion that's enough. You probably pay more to the

have a WiFi module which means they can connect to your WiFi network
at home. As soon as they are connected and you also signed up for an
account at www.RadioThermostat.com the thermostats can be controlled
from your iPhone from anywhere in the world as long as you have
internet access and of course your router/WiFi at home has to be up
and running. I could sit on the beach in Maui and as long as I had a
data connection I could open the app and see what temperature it is in
my house, I could increase or decrease the temperature etc.. I live in
northern BC and it doesn't get hot enough for long enough to worry
about air conditioning, but the thermostat can control heating as well
as cooling. If you search the archives for thermostat you should
find quite a few messages from myself as well as a few others
regarding this. You can order the thermostats directly from
www.RadioThermostat.com, but I also know a few people in the States
said they found them at Home Depot for $99 which is less than if you
buy them online. Amazon also has them, just look for Radio
Thermostat and you can find the app by searching for the same, the
app is pretty much fully accessible and relatively easy to use. The
model I have I think is called CT30. You would of course have to get
these installed by a professional installer and if you are renting I
guess

you may have to check with your landlord.

understand how a phone can control via wifi a device using the wifi

Re: You can by apple products in the UK VAT free if your blind.

2012-10-17 Thread Chris
I'm late on this thread, but I want to thank Neil for clearing this up
and telling the truth. I was suspicious when I have seen responses to
this thread, because Neil is right, there is no modifications in all of
the Apple products that are specifically for the blind. All products
come with VoiceOver off the shelf, so nill rate VAT should not apply in
this instance. Once again I thank you Neil for clearing this up and

In the case of the iPhone 5 64 gb model this would save you about £140,
I assume this applies to all apple products, given that they all include
VoiceOver these days.
I new about being able to get products specially designed for the
visually impaired v a t free, but had no idea this applied to Apple.
I rang my local store, and they were aware of this, I heard from someone
else that the store in covent garden in London is also aware of this,
but the person also said that the store in regents street wasn't aware
of it, so it sounds like not all stores know about this, still its
definitely worth knowing about.
Hope people find the above information useful.

Re: voice-activated camera app for Iphone, Ipad and more.

2012-10-17 Thread Rob Harris
I'm of the opinion that the 1touch camera and video apps are more use as
they work from startup, that is, when you double tap on them and they
start. and Then stop when you click the Home button; so all you do is
point, and you can do it so much more reliably and discretely than voice
command.
Good in situations where you don't want it obvious you're doing it; I shoot
low and got a road accident or traffic offence while on a bus, straight
out the front window of the bus I was on and aimed low and got the
registration and all. Took it home for evaluation whether to use it.

In short, I recommend this alternative.

Voice Camera Pro is the FIRST and ONLY iPhone, iPad and iPod Camera App that
allows you to control your camera using Voice Activated Commands, and does

Voice Camera Pro is designed for Apple device users who enjoy new

If you like using Siri, iPhone Voice Controls, iTranslate Voice or Dragon

Say the keywords in the Command List to use camera functions, shoot pictures
and share them in Facebook, Twitter or by email with our hands-free, Speech

You can also create your own Custom Camera Commands to control camera
functions in any language. For instance, if you wish to say the word GO to
take a picture, type in the word GO in the custom command field and say
Switch to turn on the Custom Commands. Now when you say GO, Voice Camera

Version 3.0 comes with the following voice commands:

1. Camera - Launch the Camera
2. One - Take a Photograph
3. Two - Take 2 Consecutive Photos
4. Three - Take 3 Consecutive Photos
5. Four-Take 4 Consecutive Photos
6. Switch - Switch Front to Back Camera (4/4S/iPad 2/3 Only)
7. Flash - Change Flash to On - Off - Auto (4/4S Only)
8. Ribbon - Show / Hide Voice Command Overlay
9. Photos - Launch Photo Library in Camera
10. Share - Choose Method to Share Selected Photo
11. Mail - Email Selected Photo in Library
12. Tweet - Tweet Selected Photo in Library
13. Facebook - Post Selected Photo in Library to Facebook
14. Home - Launches Command List
15. Custom - Launch Custom Commands
16. Info - Launch Info Page
17. Bye Bye - Close the Application
18. Back, Send, Cancel, OK, Relaunch, Yes, No - Functional Commands

Tell us what types of voice activated features you would like us to add to
the application. For example, if you’d like us to enable a voice command

You can use the top volume button as shutter button to take the snap?

Thom

It really wouldn't matter what part of the right side you do this, as it is
done to helporient your to the right position of your subject. You can bend
your finger back toward the phone when you are ready to snap the shot.

One more question though, are you pointing with the index finger near the

RE: voice-activated camera app for Iphone, Ipad and more.

To do a landscape shot::
Tuen the phone so that the volume up button can be pressed with your right
index finger. The lens will be to your lower right when taking the picture,
or the lower left if you are the subject of the picture.

A Landscape shot is best when you have something that is wider than it is
tall. This can include lamdscape scenic shots, someone laying down, a table,
or a large group of people.
*Tip:
When taking a picture in this mode have your index finger on the volume up
button and your thumb at the bottom edge. Squeeze with your thumb and index
finger instead of trying to just press with your index finger. It will keep
your phone a lot more stable.

Re: Question on Powering On IPhone

2012-10-17 Thread BBS
Hi Lisa. Usually I hold the power button for about 3 seconds and then I
see the Apple logo. On my iPhone 4 with iOS 6 it takes about 42-45
seconds to boot up. I don't know what else you want me to tell you when
it boots up, all I see is the Apple Screen and when the slide to unlock
screen comes up Voiceover is usually turned on. HTH.

they work from startup, that is, when you double tap on them and they
start. and Then stop when you click the Home button; so all you do is
point, and you can do it so much more reliably and discretely than voice

You can also create your own Custom Camera Commands to control camera

Search for 1Touch in the app store, there's two, they're cheap, and this
simple.

Launch them and they start; close them and they stop. That's all there is,

RE: making videos

2012-10-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello,

I tried the One Touch Camera and One Touch Video apps, they are separate
from one another and there is also an One Touch Voice Recordings app; as Rob
suggested, look in the app store if you want a more detailed description and
if you search the archives you should also find those posts from a couple of
months ago.

One thing I thought I should add when it comes to taking the picture or
starting the video you can also use the headset and you can press the middle
button of the remote, if you are in the camera app it will either take the
picture or start/stop video depending on whether you have the mode set to
Photos or Video. This would be the same button on the remote you press to
answer/hang up a call or start/pause audio. By using the headset you can
hold the camera and you don't have to touch it at all hence no chance for
movement.

Sieghard

RE: making videos

2012-10-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Patty,

You can record video until your iPhone's capacity is full, i.e. if you have
an iPhone 4S or 5 64 Gig and you have no apps on there you can take 57 or
whatever Gigabytes of video, I assume that would be many many hours. If you
have a smaller iPhone and it's filled with music and other stuff except
maybe for 1 or 2 Gig then you can only record 1 or 2 Gig of video.

Sieghard

Hello,

Nope, it's happening here with that particular game, Hanging With Friends, and

problems activating my apple id

2012-10-17 Thread Donald Raikes
Hello,

I got my IPhone 5 on monday. The first thing I need to do is to
download and install the vz contacts transfer app, but when I go into
the apps store, and tell it to install, I am prompted for my apple id
and password (finally got those entered correctly), now I have to
review my account settings, but I can't get beyond the select store
page.

I see a store picker button, but when I double-tap it the screen
doesn't seem to change and I can't select the store I need (United
states). and because I can't select the store, the next button is
disabled.

I tried this on itunes on my pc and had similar problems.

Any tips on how to get this done would be appreciated.

Around Me

2012-10-17 Thread Jesus Garcia
Evening list members, just discovered a very interesting little app called
around me. This app is great for simply exploring your surroundings, it
seems to be very accessible with voice over. thus, far I would probably give
it a 4.5 out of 5 in the accessibility score. I do not know if this works
outside the United states and Canada, but my first guess is that it probably
will work in Europe.
It will be the first selection when doing a search in the app store. The
app is free if you want to block the advertising the price is $2.99 best of
wishes.

Where To and Around Me was Re: Around Me

2012-10-17 Thread David Chittenden
Yes, Around Me works in New Zealand and Australia as well.

Another similar app to consider is Where To. Where To accesses bus stop
locations in cities that support it, such as Wellington, NZ. Also, Where To has
a nifty feature that gives the direction and distance to the POI you selected.
This information is updated as one travels toward the PI.
I use both apps.

App Store Question

2012-10-17 Thread Tom Lange
Hi folks,
One thing that really annoys me about using the app store since IOS 6 is that
whenever I check out an app update, I can't seem to find out what's actually
been changed. I just get the typical information that I'd see if I was
checking the app out for the first time. Why is that and how can I get the
scoop on what's actually changed with an app update?

Thanks in advance.

Re: App Store Question

2012-10-17 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Tom,

Another way you can access the What's New information is to change your rotor
setting to Headings. Then you can flick down with one finger to navigate by
heading to the What's new Heading, then flick right and you can read the
information. Then a one finger flick up will reverse you to the top of the
headings list. I remember that when I was having difficulty adjusting the
Rotor Settings, David encouraged me to learn that gesture as it's an integral
part of using VoiceOver. He was certainly correct about that!

I just downloaded Feeddler and can't figure out how to subscribe to a feed.

Can you help?

Yes I think you're right. I will contact them. Feeddler is just outstanding
in every other respect.

I've tried other rss readers like simple rss and news rss, but havvent' come
across this particular feature either. I guess if all else fails those of us
who are interested in it can write the feedller folks and request that it be
considered for future updates. I've found Feedller by far to be the best rss
reader. In fact, I prefer blazing through all my Google Reader subscriptions
through the iPad version that on my computer since you can load 100 stories
at a time and read the first few lines without havig to do anything else.

I use Feeddler every day and like it a lot. But you have to open the article
first before sending it to Instapaper.

Hi there,

Check out Feedler RSS, I think it might do what you want. In the app
description, it mentions instapaper.

Hi everyone, one of the things I like about using Tweetlist, is that you can
add articles to Instapaper without actually opening the article first. I've
found an RSS Reader called Reeder that does this, but it's inaccessible.
Does anyone know of an RSS Reader that's accessible that, for example, let's
you double tap and hold on a headline to get a menu which includes add to
Instapaper?

Re: What happens to Downcast Podcasts?

2012-10-17 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Jim,

You can decide what happens to podcasts you have played. You can set a global
setting and then change the behavior for individual podcasts if you like. To
get to global settings, choose More from the main screen, and then double-tap
Settings, near the top of the screen. Find the Episodes to keep heading. The
next item says what the behavior is currently set to. If you don't like it,
double-tap, choose the behavior you want, and then choose Back, in the upper
left corner.

To change the behavior for a particular podcast, double-tap the podcast name to
go into its main screen, and then double-tap Settings near the bottom of the
screen. Episodes to Keep is set to Obey Global Setting when you first choose
it, but you can double-tap this and choose another option if you wish.

If you have deleted an episode you want to hear again, there's a View Other
Available Episodes button below the list of episodes. It will bring up a list
of other episodes, and you can either download or stream any that you want to
hear.

HTH,
Anna

 Howdy,

What happens to a podcast once it has been played using Downcast? A few days

 Jim
PS. Do the Techtalk shows have podcast subscriptions?
