I don't think so as I live in the UK. As Sieghard mentions, I may have to wait a little for some new applications that - as I seem to read on the internet - may be coming soon. There are really no actual TV channels available, just services like Netflix, YouTube, internet radio stations etc. There are some sports related things, but since I am not into those I don't know much about that. But I think just the ability to Airplay from your phone to the TV and having access to your iTunes library on the TV etc. is worth the $99. There are also rumours that probably not too long in the future you will be able to install apps on the Apple TV and that of course may open the possibilities for more TV options. Is your TV still a big box that is a foot or more from front to back or is it a flat, relatively thin unit? When I bought my Sony LCD TV about 5 years ago they were not nearly as thin as the LCD or LED TV's are nowadays, but it still is only maybe 3 or so inches thick. Even if your TV does not have HDMI inputs, you could get around this if you have buy a home theatre receiver or speaker system and unless you want something of higher quality which would cost maybe between $800 and $2,000 you can get entry level systems for $300 or $400. Those should have HDMI inputs and also still have analogue outputs so you could connect your older TV and the receiver would convert the digital signal to an analogue one for your TV. Of course you can pick up 32 inch and even 37 inch and 40 inch LCD TV's for not too much money these days especially if you wait maybe until a good sale like around Black Friday or Boxing Day and the Apple TV is $99 so it doesn't break the bank, either. I think you are actually getting notifications from your notifications centre. Go into settings notifications Mail. Turn off alert style notifications for your favorites and For all email accounts. Having mailset to fetch manually might actually make this worse. Because when you access your mail account it will then check for new mail and give you all the notifications at once. Dear Alex and All, I have, as this is very important, firstly checked with our internal finance team, and then with HMRC directly. You cannot, repeat cannot, get nil rated VAT relief on items purchased within the UK which are, so to speak, off the shelf none adaptive technologies. The simple rule of thumb is; if the item comes right off the shelf, and can be used without modification or alteration by the disabled person, then it does not qualify. Yes, the iPhone has Voice Over built into it, as do all Apple products, yet, the same inclusive or access technology is included in all of Apple's products. This is not a specific modification for the blind user. As such, Apple's products do not qualify for VAT nil rating under this section of law. They directed me to the below text, which I have, for ease, copied and pasted below. It should be noted, that if you obtain a product without paying VAT, where you should have, you are as liable as the vender. In other words, it is not a defence to say,'well, Apple gave me the VAT nil rating… Goods and services exempt from VAT In accordance with group 14 of the zero rate schedule to the value added tax act 1983. Blind and partially sighted people, and charities working on their behalf, can buy certain goods without paying VAT on them. This relief from VAT also extends to: - the provision of services to adapt items for use by, or to meet the needs of, a blind or partially sighted person - spare parts, accessories, repair and maintenance of such goods and adaptations. Goods which have been designed solely for use by disabled or blind and partially sighted people and which are for personal or domestic use only will be zero-rated for VAT. This would include such items as: - CCTV reading aids - braille display units - braille embossers - speech synthesiser units - speech output and character enlargement software. Computer systems which are specially designed and manufactured solely for the use of disabled people may qualify for a composite or reduced rate of VAT where components and software similar to the above are included in their manufacture. Training in the use of such computer systems may also qualify for a reduced rate of VAT for individuals where the equipment is used for personal or domestic use. You should check with your supplier regarding the amount of VAT to be charged when discussing purchase of you computer system. Relief does not apply to general purpose goods used by disabled people. Corrective spectacles and contact lenses are not relieved from VAT. If you need to have any general-purpose goods adapted to meet your needs as a disabled person, so that you can use them, anything you pay to have them adapted is exempt from VAT, but you would have to pay the normal rate

RE: voice-activated camera app for Iphone, Ipad and more.
Hi there, I'm not Kawal, but when I was sighted, I was a professional photographer. To get a subject in the picture, you want it to be at a 90 degree angle from the face of the camera or phone. Hold the phone with two hands, the left near the up volume button (that will take the picture), and the right hand on the right side of the phone. Try pointing, with your right index finger at what you'd like to line up with. When it's aligned, click the top volume button to take the picture. Here's a note. What will fit into the frame, or viewfinder, is about the same amount of distance you are away from the subject. To get just the face and shoulders, you should be alright about 3 feet (an armslength) from the subject. If you want their full body in the picture, you will have to back up as far away from them, as they are tall. Then back up a little more to give you a little more space around the subject. Now aim at the middle ( their belly), and you should be ready to take the shot If you atried to take a full length shot and aimed at their face, the face would be in the middle, a lot of space above their head, and their legs would be cut off about the knees. If you leave yourself a little extra space on all sides, the picture can be cropped after it's taken. Cropping is cutting out just the area that you want to keep. . Question on Powering On IPhone
Hi All, As a totally blind person, I feel a little mystified when I have to completely turn off my phone and then turn it back on again. I'm never quite sure how long to hold the power button, and then, how long to wait before trying again. I'd love it if someone could go through in detail about the start up process: How long should I hold the power button? Is it possible to hold the button too long? What happens on screen during the power up phase? How long between the time when the Apple Logo comes on and when I can expect VoiceOver to come up? I'm guessing there may be some variations from start up to start up, but if I could have some good parameters, that would be really helpful. Also, knowing what's happening on screen (if anything) can be useful to know for troubleshooting. Anyone else's tips would be great too. Thanks Lisa -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. To search the VIPhone public archive, visit http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com/. Re: Question on Powering On IPhone
Hi, Lisa, I usually hold mine down for about five seconds. I wait two minutes and expect the shrill beep, followed by VO reading the home screen. This is on an Ipod fourth gen. I don't restart it often; only when something very strange is happening. Mostly I clear stuff out of the App switcher and see if that helps. mlb at bat
I am using a iphone 3gs, and still using ios5.11. When I select a audio game, I close the gameday audio window. I wait about a minute, during this time, I can hear the audio volume fade slightly, then come back to full volume. Then I tap the home button, then lock the screen. The audio player has remained on, and I have been able to listen to all the playoff games. I am getting the TV feeds, and I did not purchase MLB TV because I can't see it. So how is it that I can get video during the playoffs? Not complaining, just curious. David Gross -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. What you are saying to do worked for me last night, screen never locked. The phone was charging; perhaps that made a difference. We’ll see when the games start today. Cropping is cutting out just the area that you want to keep. . I could sit on the beach in Maui and as long as I had a data connection I could open the app and see what temperature it is in my house, I could increase or decrease the temperature etc.. I live in northern BC and it doesn't get hot enough for long enough to worry about air conditioning, but the thermostat can control heating as well as cooling. If you search the archives for thermostat you should find quite a few messages from myself as well as a few others regarding this. You can order the thermostats directly from www.RadioThermostat.com, but I also know a few people in the States said they found them at Home Depot for $99 which is less than if you buy them online. Amazon also has them, just look for Radio Thermostat and you can find the app by searching for the same, the app is pretty much fully accessible and relatively easy to use. Re: voice-activated camera app for Iphone, Ipad and more.
I'm of the opinion that the 1touch camera and video apps are more use as they work from startup, that is, when you double tap on them and they start. and Then stop when you click the Home button; so all you do is point, and you can do it so much more reliably and discretely than voice command. Good in situations where you don't want it obvious you're doing it; I shoot low and got a road accident or traffic offence while on a bus, straight out the front window of the bus I was on and aimed low and got the registration and all. Took it home for evaluation whether to use it. In short, I recommend this alternative. I've tried other rss readers like simple rss and news rss, but havvent' come across this particular feature either. I guess if all else fails those of us who are interested in it can write the feedller folks and request that it be considered for future updates. I've found Feedller by far to be the best rss reader. In fact, I prefer blazing through all my Google Reader subscriptions through the iPad version that on my computer since you can load 100 stories at a time and read the first few lines without havig to do anything else. RE: voice-activated camera app for Iphone, Ipad and more.
To do a landscape shot:: Tuen the phone so that the volume up button can be pressed with your right index finger. The lens will be to your lower right when taking the picture, or the lower left if you are the subject of the picture. A Landscape shot is best when you have something that is wider than it is tall. This can include lamdscape scenic shots, someone laying down, a table, or a large group of people. *Tip: When taking a picture in this mode have your index finger on the volume up button and your thumb at the bottom edge. Squeeze with your thumb and index finger instead of trying to just press with your index finger. It will keep your phone a lot more stable. Hi Lisa. Usually I hold the power button for about 3 seconds and then I see the Apple logo. On my iPhone 4 with iOS 6 it takes about 42-45 seconds to boot up. I don't know what else you want me to tell you when it boots up, all I see is the Apple Screen and when the slide to unlock screen comes up Voiceover is usually turned on. I bought the mini Bluetooth keyboard from Blind Bargains. It says you need 4.0, but I am assuming, and everyone knows what that gets you (smiles), that it will work 4.0 and up. If not, I took a chance on it and only paid 12 dollars with it being 50 dollars originally. I venture now that it is out of use. Question is: Does anyone have this keyboard. Re: making videos
Sorry to keep labouring this, but this is also why I use the 1Touch video; it just does it, sound, picture stream and all. I get at the results via the photos app when I stopped the video recording tool; and then click actions and select share and then email and then choose a recipient out of my contacts; all basic stuff in other words. Note: careful how long you record video, it gets big in a hurry and some recipients mail servers have message size limits. a 2Mb video clip is not a lot. 30 seconds max I'd suggest in order to keep out of trouble. More than that, check the size before you send it and consider other methods. I'd love to be able to upload to Dropbox and share from there as it's then the recipient who is downloading voluntarily. Better, to ftp or transfer into my own web space. RE: making videos
Hello, I tried the One Touch Camera and One Touch Video apps, they are separate from one another and there is also an One Touch Voice Recordings app; as Rob suggested, look in the app store if you want a more detailed description and if you search the archives you should also find those posts from a couple of months ago. One thing I thought I should add when it comes to taking the picture or starting the video you can also use the headset and you can press the middle button of the remote, if you are in the camera app it will either take the picture or start/stop video depending on whether you have the mode set to Photos or Video. This would be the same button on the remote you press to answer/hang up a call or start/pause audio. By using the headset you can hold the camera and you don't have to touch it at all hence no chance for movement. RE: making videos
Patty, You can record video until your iPhone's capacity is full, i.e. if you have an iPhone 4S or 5 64 Gig and you have no apps on there you can take 57 or whatever Gigabytes of video, I assume that would be many many hours. If you have a smaller iPhone and it's filled with music and other stuff except maybe for 1 or 2 Gig then you can only record 1 or 2 Gig of video. Re: game sounds and voice over?
Hello, Nope, it's happening here with that particular game, Hanging With Friends, and KODP as well. I noticed this behavior shortly after IOS6 went live, and have contacted accessibility about it...Thoroughly annoying, and IMO, it can't hurt letting them know that you are experiencing it as well. P.S. HWF recently had an update, and the cutting out is still present, so based on that, it isn't a problem with the games/audio-using applications themselves. problems activating my apple id
Hello, I got my IPhone 5 on monday. The first thing I need to do is to download and install the vz contacts transfer app, but when I go into the apps store, and tell it to install, I am prompted for my apple id and password (finally got those entered correctly), now I have to review my account settings, but I can't get beyond the select store page. I see a store picker button, but when I double-tap it the screen doesn't seem to change and I can't select the store I need (United states). and because I can't select the store, the next button is disabled. I tried this on itunes on my pc and had similar problems. Any tips on how to get this done would be appreciated. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Around Me
Evening list members, just discovered a very interesting little app called around me. This app is great for simply exploring your surroundings, it seems to be very accessible with voice over. thus, far I would probably give it a 4.5 out of 5 in the accessibility score. I do not know if this works outside the United states and Canada, but my first guess is that it probably will work in Europe. It will be the first selection when doing a search in the app store. The app is free if you want to block the advertising the price is $2.99 best of wishes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Where To and Around Me was Re: Around Me
Yes, Around Me works in New Zealand and Australia as well. Another similar app to consider is Where To. Where To accesses bus stop locations in cities that support it, such as Wellington, NZ. Also, Where To has a nifty feature that gives the direction and distance to the POI you selected. This information is updated as one travels toward the PI. I use both apps. App Store Question
Hi folks, One thing that really annoys me about using the app store since IOS 6 is that whenever I check out an app update, I can't seem to find out what's actually been changed. I just get the typical information that I'd see if I was checking the app out for the first time. Why is that and how can I get the scoop on what's actually changed with an app update? Re: App Store Question
Hi Tom, Another way you can access the What's New information is to change your rotor setting to Headings. Then you can flick down with one finger to navigate by heading to the What's new Heading, then flick right and you can read the information. Then a one finger flick up will reverse you to the top of the headings list. I remember that when I was having difficulty adjusting the Rotor Settings, David encouraged me to learn that gesture as it's an integral part of using VoiceOver. He was certainly correct about that! Re: What happens to Downcast Podcasts?
Hi Jim, You can decide what happens to podcasts you have played. You can set a global setting and then change the behavior for individual podcasts if you like. To get to global settings, choose More from the main screen, and then double-tap Settings, near the top of the screen. Find the Episodes to keep heading. The next item says what the behavior is currently set to. If you don't like it, double-tap, choose the behavior you want, and then choose Back, in the upper left corner. To change the behavior for a particular podcast, double-tap the podcast name to go into its main screen, and then double-tap Settings near the bottom of the screen. Episodes to Keep is set to Obey Global Setting when you first choose it, but you can double-tap this and choose another option if you wish. If you have deleted an episode you want to hear again, there's a View Other Available Episodes button below the list of episodes. It will bring up a list of other episodes, and you can either download or stream any that you want to hear.
