Re: Battery drain

2020-09-16 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Also, when my iPhone updated to 13.7, I had to turn my screen
brightness to 0, and also turn off screen time. This really helped me
save some of my iPhone's battery.

RE: Battery drain

2020-09-16 Thread Richard Turner
If the battery drain continues after more than a few days, I'd contact Apple
Accessibility.
It is normal after an update to see some extra battery drain while the phone
indexes itself in the background.
But after a few days, it should go back to normal.
I'd call Apple Accessibility and have them do some diagnostics that they can do
remotely: 877-204-3930

Hello Listers,

iOS 13.7 downloaded to my phone recently, and since its download, I'm noticing
significant drain on my battery in less time than say, last week. I have not
added any demand to my device. Have others noticed this also, and is there
something I can, or need to do about this? Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: battery drain while listening to nls books

2020-06-17 Thread Barbara Stahl
If you notice significant battery drain, you can try putting the phone in low
power mode while listening. You can do this through settings or with seri by
asking seri to turn on low power mode. You can turn it off again by telling
seri to turn off low power mode.
I have done this with apps like I heart radio which is a major battery drainer.
the difference in battery drainage was immediately noticeable. So you could
try this method.

Re: battery drain while listening to nls books

2020-06-17 Thread Wayne Merritt
I haven't noticed any significant battery drain when listening to BARD
books. I usually play the book in the app with the phone unlocked.
I've got Bluetooth on and use other apps that use more battery power
than the BARD Mobile app. I would agree with Richard if you notice a
huge drain in battery. Another idea is to see how many apps you are
running in the App Switcher, and if any of those use GPS and/or the
camera. If so, close them, and you should see your battery use go back
to normal.

I have no problem with battery drain because I press the side switch or power
button and let it play in the background, which is the suggested approach for
any audio if you don’t want the battery to drain.
You can get 6 or 8 times the battery life if you are listening while the phone
is locked.
If BARD stops playing when you lock the screen, check the BARD app settings
under audio settings and make sure play in background is on.
If it is and it still stops, toggle it off and on and reboot the phone and all
should be well.

Hi Sieghard many thanks for your reply. I will do that when I can get somebody
to read the password on the WIFI hub. Last night I powered off the phone
closed all the apps from the app switcher, the phone was 95 percent and in the
morning it was 89 percent. So now I am not sure if I should go to the Apple
shop or not. Tonight I will charge it up to 100 percent and leave open the
apps in the app switcher and see what happens.

For resetting network settings, it was my understanding that your wallpaper
choice is deleted, not that this would concern a lot of us, only, when I reset
network settings, I change my wallpaper, because I want to make sure that it is
still wallpapers versus the dynamic wallpaper, which uses more battery than
still wallpaper.

When you go to about phone to change your name after a network reset,
you might be prompted to update carrier settings. Be sure to do this as
it will give you updated settings from your carrier.

RE: battery drain

2019-06-01 Thread 'deidre muccio' via VIPhone
This was extremely helpful. How long have the phones been using lithium
batteries? From the outset?

Subject: Re: battery drain

Leaving your phone plugged in will help, and I tend to plug my phone in
whenever it's convenient, but it's also meant to be a mobile device, so
I'm not a slave to a charging cable.

Lithium ion batteries have a life span based in something called cycles.
A cycle is when you end up going through a full charge, even if it
happens in increments. For example, if you go down to 80% charge, charge
it up, and then go down to 50% charge, charge it up again, and then go
down to 70% charge you'll have used up one cycle since you used up 20%
and then 50% and then 30% for a total of 100%. This is why it's good to
plug your phone in when you can to save cycles.

Lithium ion batteries also tend to like shallow charges, so again, if
it's convenient, you'll want to charge it up when it gets between 80%
and 40% left on your battery. Again, this is just something they like,
but you won't be doing significant damage to your battery if you let it
run all the way down or top it off when it's only down about 5% or 10%.

There are two things lithium batteries don't like. One is heat, so try
to keep your phone from over heating, like leaving it in a sunny car
with the windows up. They other thing they don't like is losing all of
their charge. This won't happen when you let your battery go down to 0%
since the electronics on your battery will say you're at 0% and shutdown
even though they still have some charge left. What you don't want to do
is let your phone run all the way down and then store it somewhere,
since your battery will lose charge even if the phone is powered off. If
you want to store your phone for some length of time, make sure the
battery is topped off first.

Anyone can check anything I've said by researching this on your own. The
last time I read up on this, Battery University had a good article.

Re: battery drain

2019-06-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain

Hello all
Someone I know repeatedly tells me that she keeps her i Phone 6S plugged in
all the time, and that it does not add to the wear on the longtime battery
life of the phone. What I think she is suggesting is that because the phone
is plugged in all the time, (she has an additional battery pack of some sort
as back up when she is out) that the phone never goes through cycles of
recharging which means the battery will last indefinitely.
I have an iPhone 6 and don't know if this applies, or is advisable.
I'm still stuck back in the thinking that the phones only have so
many times they can be charged but how that calculation is made I can't say.
As it is my phone is on almost all the time, I use it for all kinds of
things, never have location services on, and rarely have cellular data on
cause I do not have unlimited, and between reading, podcasts, calender, Tune
In, mail, and miscellaneous other apps, the phone has to be charged daily,
sometimes several times a day.
So is the battery in the iphone 6 the same as the 6S and is
it true that there is an advantage to keeping it plugged in all the time?

Hi, Richard:
My next step is to call Apple accessibility and talk with them. We do have an

Also, if you just updated battery will most likely be used more during the
first couple of days after the update since the phone is reindexing a lot of
stuff.
As Sean said, give it a few days, then do a Reset Network Settings and also,
afterwards, plug in your phone, then turn it off completely over night leaving
it plugged in. Turn it on the next morning and see how it behaves.
Just out of curiocity, did you do anything in preparation for the upgrade or
did you just tell it to install when it prompted you?
Lastly, remember that after you do a Reset Network Settings you have to
reconnect to your WiFi and you will need to enter the WiFi Password, also, if
you renamed your phone or if it is called anything other than simply “iPhone”,
then you have to go to Settings > General > About and rename it in there.

Have you turned off screen time as well? With this on, your phone will log how
long you use it each day, thus draining your battery. Turning this feature off
should reduce the strain on your battery. HTH.

Unfortunately Mario's experience would indicate that if all these things don't
help a complete reset would be your next step and you may even have to set up
as a new phone and then download your apps and add your content again. This is
a lot of work, but occasionally this is the way to go.

RE: battery drain in ios 12

2018-10-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It is always a good idea as the absolute minimum to make sure you quit all apps
in the app switcher and reboot your phone prior to an update. If it is a major
update, e.g. from iOS 11 to iOS 12 as in this case I usually do a reset network
settings before the update just to make sure if there are any processes running
that they are terminated.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi, Sieghard:
I did not do anything to my phone prior to upgrading to Ios 12. Screen time
was never turned on, so as you suggest, I’ll try resetting network settings.

Have you turned off screen time as well? With this on, your phone will log how
long you use it each day, thus draining your battery. Turning this feature off
should reduce the strain on your battery. HTH.

Re: battery drain in ios 12

2018-10-15 Thread Lisa Belville

Hi.

I've got an iPhone SE and I've noticed the same thing.  Before iOS 12, I
could sit my phone down with a 100% charge and it would lose maybe one
or two percent over several hours even with notifications and an
occasional in-coming call.  Now my phone loses about 2 percent battery
an hour, and this is with it on stand by with no calls or other apps
running.

I've made sure auto brightness is off and I had to re-disable automatic
fetching for my Email.  I've also made sure location services are off
except when they are necessary.

I've also done a hard reset and it hasn't made a difference.

Other than that I like iOS 12,

Re: Battery drain

2016-09-14 Thread Dan

Hi Jonathan,

I know that is what they say but my experience has been that screen
curtain does effect the battery drain on my Iphones. I use my phone a
lot while in a vehicle and so I notice the battery frequently. I have
tried it with curtain on and also with it off and it drains faster with
it off.

I appreciate you trying to give me the straight scoop though but my
experience is telling me that maybe there are conditions they aren't
considering.

Hi Dan, Apple Accessibility has confirmed on multiple occasions that
screen curtain has no effect on battery drain. Adjusting the

which hasn't happened in many years, now you can tell Siri to increase
the brightness for you, so I can't think of a reason that a totally

Screen curtain is a great security tool, but it has no impact on

Re: Battery drain

2016-09-14 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
Hi Mary,

The paralax thing was something that Apple brought in a few iOS versions ago, I
think it may have been iOS 6 or 7, but this is more for sighted users. If you
choose a dynamic wallpaper, and have this paralax effect on, it makes your
wallpaper 3-d or something. You can disable this by going into Setting, then
General, then Accessibility and toggle on the setting "Reduce Motion", this
will remove or reduce the paralax effect.

Hope this helps!

Re: Battery drain

2016-09-14 Thread englishrider91
Handoff can be found in Settings/General, and the fitness stuff can be found in
Settings/Privacy. Something to check and turn off as well might be the
suggested apps feature. It's based on location services, if I understand the
little explanation thing after the setting toggle, so could possibly drain
battery as well. You can find that setting in the Handoff settings area"

2016-09-14 Thread Mary Otten
Bluetooth is not on. Auto brightness is off. I'll have to check on handoff,
although I have never turned it on. Wouldn't it show up in the battery details
though if it was using lots of power? And I'm not sure about that last thing
you mentioned. I've never heard of it. Not sure where to look for it.

Re: Battery drain

2016-09-14 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Dan, Apple Accessibility has confirmed on multiple occasions that screen
curtain has no effect on battery drain. Adjusting the brightness does though. I
always have my brightness at 0%. Even if I need to turn it up to get sighted
help if VO breaks badly enough, which hasn't happened in many years, now you
can tell Siri to increase the brightness for you, so I can't think of a reason
that a totally blind user shouldn't have their brightness at 0% and automatic
brightness adjustment disabled.
Screen curtain is a great security tool, but it has no impact on battery drain.

Re: Battery drain

2016-09-14 Thread Dan
You might want to check to see if screen curtain is on. If not turning
it on will drain the battery much more slowly.

battery usage details, it seems that the mail app is by far the biggest
consumer of battery. Now that makes sense, since I do a lot of mail on my

has dropped to 62%. That seems a bit much. Location tracking is not on. No apps

Re: Battery drain since recent update

2015-09-24 Thread Richard Turner

mary,
I just went through all of my cellular settings and several things were on that
I had turned off. I have no idea if those would effect battery at all.
However, I also went through Privacy, Location services and there were a few
more that were using my location "always" that I don't recall setting that way,
so I set those to never unless I really did want them on.
But, like you, with 9.0.1 it seems that my battery is draining faster.
Now that I have changed several things, I'll see how today goes.

I already checked Bluetooth and display brightness, since they were in fact
turned on after the big upgrade. But they did not get turned on or changed by
this little upgrade this afternoon. The only thing that may have changed was
that mail was sent to "push". I don't remember doing that, but I may have a
long time ago and just forgotten. I changed it to fetch on a schedule of every
half hour. But just in the few minutes since I sent my first message on this
topic, I have lost five more percent. Interestingly, mail and Siri are the two
big culprits according to the battery statistics in settings. And I haven't
used Siri hardly at all. I have used dictation, and that may be where the Siri
stuff is coming from. Maybe I suddenly have a revisitation of the microphone
not turning off bug. Hard to know.

Thanks, sieghard. Since I am about to get my upgraded 6S, I probably won't mess
with the network settings here. Interestingly, I also upgraded my iPad mini.
And it is not experiencing the battery drain. Also, it did stick around at 25%
for a very long time this morning. So it could be that the gauge is just out of
calibration.

If you reset network settings in this way, does it mess up your cellular

Many thanks for your valuable tips.

Hi Mary,

There is not much to mess with, all you do is go to Settings > General > Reset,
double tap on Reset Network Settings and confirm. Your phone will reboot, after
you unlock/enter your passcode you simply go back to Settings > WiFi, connect
to your WiFi (enter your password) and it's done.
I find it's amazing how many problems this can fix.
A while back my wife on her iPhone 6 often had the audio cut in and out when
she was on a phone call. It was her side of the call which was very crackly and
sometimes cutting out completely. I did a Reset Network Settings and it's been
perfect since.

You can, of course, calibrate the battery indicator, just use your iPhone until
it turns off by itself once the battery is totally run down. Then plug it in
and charge it for a good long time, best over night. Then do this over one more
time, use it until the battery goes dead and charge it one more time.

Regards,
Sieghard

I didn't think to check privacy and location, so I will go do that now. Also
cellular, but I have been in there a lot recently, and I don't think anything
is on that shouldn't be.

RE: Battery drain since recent update

2015-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Andrew,

It messes up nothing with respect to cellular or carrier settings.
The only two things you have to do is reconnect to your WiFi which means of
course you hve to know and enter the password if your WiFi is protected as it
most likely is.
Also, if you have changed the name of your iPhone it will reset it to the
default which is just "iPhone", so you also have to go to Settings > General >
About and put the name back to what you want it to be.

Sieghard

Sieghart,

If you reset network settings in this way, does it mess up your cellular
carrier settings? Or does the cellular network automatically send you the
settings necessary for your cellular connection?

Many thanks for your valuable tips.

If you have information stored about multiple wifi networks then you'll
have to readd all of these networks after resetting your network
connections. This shouldn't keep you from taking Sieghard's advice, but
it may be a bit tedious if you're frequently connecting to multiple wifis.

You can, of course, calibrate the battery indicator, just use your iPhone until

And it is not experiencing the battery drain. Also, it did stick around at 25%

Re: Battery drain on my 6 since 8.4

2015-07-03 Thread Chris Smart

It seems some but not all people running 8.4 are having this
problem.
I haven't experienced it yet, but I also haven't enabled Apple Music
either, so perhaps that's the culprit.
first thing to do is check your apps running in the background. There may
be a rogue app sucking your phone or tablet's battery life. As far as
Apple Music is concerned, streaming services can be a huge drain on the
battery life.
Head over to Settings General Usage Battery Usage to see
apps that are draining the most battery. If you notice something unusual,
update that app, reinstall it or completely remove it. You may also
consider limiting the activity of apps in the background. Go to Settings
General Background App Refresh Turn it off for individual
apps.
Alternatively, you may consider storing your songs locally. Streaming
music over 4G LTE consumes a lot of battery power, whether it's Apple
Music, Spotify or any other service. If you are in a poor coverage area,
turn on the Airplane Mode to save battery. If the problem still persists
or you believe that the iOS 8.4 is the real culprit, you may downgrade to
iOS 8.3.

don't need it. There's often a lot of that about.

Subject: Battery drain on my 6 since 8.4

Hi,

This may even be true of my phone since 8.3, but, certainly, since 8.4, my
battery is draining alarmingly since I upgraded. I
have always found the battery life of the 6 to be excellent, but,
unfortunately, no longer. Am I alone in this? If so, it might be
attributable to an app I have installed or some such. However, Location Based
services are not showing up in the status bar and I am
just at home, not running GPS etc.

Can anyone confirm?

Sandy.

I haven't checked, but sometimes after an upgrade, some battery hungry
services are turned back on. Double check your screen brightness,
bluetooth and so on.

Re: Battery drain [was Re: problem, since upgrading to 8.3]

2015-04-11 Thread Arianna Sepulveda
You might also want to check that bluetooth and autobrightness are
turned off. Bluetooth is turned on by default so that people who rely
exclusively on Braille displays to interact with their iDevices, such
as those who are deafblind, are not locked out of their iDevice and
forced to ask someone to repair their display before they can use
their iDevice. I don't know why autobrightness is turned on, but when
I updated to iOS 8, it was.

Thanks,
Ari
