[WAMUG] computer - phone connectivity

2022-05-18 Thread John Thompson
I am sure I have asked this question before but cannot find the response/s.

I have iPhone 13 mini and my Wife has iPhone 12 mini. Earlier this year I had
no problem with the 13 updating the Calendar from the computer entries but of
late, it does not. The 12 is a later purchase and has been a problem in this
area all along. Both computer and phone/s have been system updated so it
appears something in the latest updates has changed.

Can someone please give some options to rectify this problem?

[WAMUG] iphone setup

2022-03-29 Thread John Thompson
I need assistance with my wife’s recently purchased iphone 12 mini setup.
I am not totally ignorant in the use of Apple computers but iOs is another
story.

My iPhone, laptop and iPad quite happily interface with the Mac Mini desktop,
reflecting changes in calendar, Safari Bookmarks, messages, Arlo Security
Camera, etc., but we can’t get the iPhone 12 Mini to do the same.

Can someone please shed some light on this problem.

Re: [WAMUG] upn file?

2022-02-15 Thread John Thompson
Hi Robin,

Many thanks for the reply. Yes, the vehicle in question is a Jeep Grand
Cherokee, 2013 model. I have already been on the site you mentioned and
followed all the download instructions which resulted in downloading the
uconnect.upn file. The problem I had was in opening that file as nothing in my
app collection would open it. There is a file in the download that has to be
extracted and the Mac can’t do it.

Solved the problem however by using one of those ‘other’ computers, with the
aid of my Daughter, to open and extract the file. I have now managed to
upgrade the vehicle software to the latest version but am still unable to
successfully pair my iphone13 with the car. My earlier iphone6 worked fine so
I guess I still have some work to figure out the problem.

I know this is not a Mac or WAMUG related problem, and for that, I apologise to
the group.

Once again, thank you and Kind Regards

Greetings All,

A little patience is all that is required. Just after posting my previous to

All appears good and the interface is quite pleasing.

Re: big sur

2020-12-22 Thread John Thompson
I have been holding off on this upgrade, waiting on some positive reports. All
looked good this morning so, with nothing better to do, I decided now was the
time.

Thankfully, I still have my 13” mid- 2012 MacBook pro running Mojave as the
late 2014 Mac mini is still trying to complete the upgrade to Big Sur. It has
been ove two hours now and still not up and running so I guess it is just a
waiting game.

A very Merry Christmas and happy and safe New Year to one and all.

Thanks again to all for their inputs. Following Daniel’s instructions, Time

received the information regarding Catalina and Firewire but apparently it was
false.

Re: Ext drive connectivity

2020-06-14 Thread John Thompson
Thanks Daniel,

I have followed your instructions and it now appears to be working. the
External drive/s are showing on the desktop and in Disk Utility.

The Time Machine backups ceased in February right after the system upgrade to
Catalina and a misterious message appeared stating the system no longer
supported firewire and to connect external drives via USB 3. I left everything
as was until recently and decided to re-connect Time Machine.

Will see how it goes now and advise on the results.

Ext drive connectivity

2020-06-13 Thread John Thompson
Maybe Peter H. or Daniel Kerr could assist in this one.

For quite a number of years I have been using a Voyager Q External drive,
purchased from Daniel, for my Backup and Time Machine, connected to my Mac Mini
(Late 2014) via Thunderbolt to firewire cable. This has worked fine until my
upgrade to Catalina which no longer supports Firewire and now requires USB 3
connectivity.

Could you please advise the cableing I would require and the port/s available
on the Mac Mini for same.

Canon scanner

2020-05-28 Thread John Thompson
Hello group,

I am having trouble (in fact, can’t get any joy) scanning with my Canon Pixma
TS6060 Multifunction printer. Have tried installing new drivers, checked the
Canon info site and generally spent half the day trying to get a scan from the
printer to the Computer. All to no avail.

Have the latest Os installed and everything else works, including the printer,
but not the scanner.

Has anyone had any experience with this type of machine.

Re: lPad Internet Connection

2019-07-25 Thread John Thompson
Hello Group,

many thanks for the responses. Yes, I have gone through all the reset
suggestions that have been made, including the Modem Restart, and initially,
no result. However, after the umpteenth attempt, the iPad WIFI responded
briefly and then died again. We left it sleeping for some hours and Julie went
back a short time ago, entered the Settings and the beast is now working. Will
see how long this lasts.

Thank again and regards to all

lPad Internet Connection

2019-07-24 Thread John Thompson
I know, senility is a big issue. I have been trying for the past hour or so to
connect my iPad (6th gen), iOS 12.3.1, to the internet without success. There
is no problem with my iphone or Mac Mini. Does anyone have any suggestions as I
seem to have run out of ideas.

Hi Ronn,

Thanks for that, I will forward the info on but in the meantime, my daughter is
planning on paying a visit to MacWorx in Joondalup so she will get their advice
on the matter also.

Apparently, it is the Graphics card in her iMac and that item is no longer
available.

Hi Ronni,

Many thanks for that info. I will, with your permission of course, forward it
on to my youngest daughter. Her 2007 27” iMac died recently - the problem was
in the Monitor and apparently, replacement parts are not available - don’t know
the exact cirumstances. Due to serious health situations in her family she is
not in a position to puchase a new full computer (of the Apple kind) but will
have to buy a cheap Windoze laptop for work purposes. She would like to
purchase a MacMini and be able to use the laptop as a monitor.

Please let me know if there is a problem with forwarding this information.

My older ipad, the model following Version 2 and sometimes referred to as ‘ipad

log in. The ipad is too old for the lates OS upgrade but has been working well
up to now, with the few odd exceptions.

Has anyone any suggestions.

Networking problem

2018-11-28 Thread John Thompson
Good morning list.

I have two computers, a MacMini and a Macbook Pro, both upgraded succesfully to
Mojave. The MacMini is the main computer and the Macbrook Pro is used primarily
when travelling. Up until the upgrade, I have had no problems with networking
the two machines and transferring required data when preparing to travel. Now,
neither machine will see the other, in fact the message is ‘unable to connect’.

The only disparity I see when comparing the Network settings is on the MacMini.
The Ehernet Status is Connected but 'has a self-assigned IP address and will
not be able to connect to the Internet.’.

Does anyone have any idea what the probvlem may be? I can give further data
when and if required.

Thank you

John Thompson

Thaks
Ronni,

I had guessed the OS was about as far as it would go as no more reminders to
update have been received but thought I would check anyway.

The problem appears to have righted itself now but wil lkeep the reboot option
in mind,

iPad Os

2018-08-04 Thread John Thompson
Hello list,

We have a 2012 iPad3 (I think it was referred to as iPad New) that
appears to have developed a Safari problem. Will not open certain favourite
sites. It is running iOS 9 .?. Is that the last update this machine will
handle, and if not, how do we upgrade?
I feel an upgrade may rectify the problems.

Any assistance/advice would be appreciated.

Re: iPad No Internet Connection

2018-07-04 Thread John Thompson
Hi Diana,
It is quite possibly your provider giving you a little nudge to make
the changeover to NBN. We had a similar problem with our internet dropping in
and out quite regularly once the NBN became available in our area.
Made the changeover and all is back to normal with an improved performance.
Have not had a dropout since.

I find PDFpenPro does a very good job with editing PDF files. Works well with

Re: New Computer (WAMUG posting)

2018-02-16 Thread John Thompson
Thanks for that Ronni,

I made a posting to the list for information of anyone interested and also to
seek a little assistance. I don’t think that warranted your negative response.

My query was where would the unnecessary data on my hard drive be hiding, and
how to remove it. I also stated that since the move to the new machine, the
boot time seemed a little too long for a modern application. I would like to
know if it is possibly a software or hardware problem.

If the WAMUG can assist, I would be very thankful.

Regards

John Thompson

Re: New Computer (WAMUG posting)

2018-02-15 Thread John Thompson
Just an update on my latest venture in the "wonderful world of Apple”.

After much trial and error, I have now managed to successfully and completely
migrate all the data from old MacMini to the new one. I used the term migrate
loosely as there appeared to have been several incomplete upgrades. The
result of this is now having a very overloaded HD. What should have been a 158
GB upgrade, plus the extra used by the latest OS, has now turned out to end up
with a 705 GB HD.

I can only assume that all the early attempts have been socked away somewhere
and would now like to know if there is any way I can clean them out.

On another issue, the new Mini seems to take much longer, up to 3 minutes, to
boot up. This is boot time I have not encountered since the days of the old
Ap[ple 11GS.

Thanks to the list for assistance

Regards

John Thompson

Re: New Computer (WAMUG posting)

2018-02-11 Thread John Thompson
Hello Alan,

Thanks for that. The adapter arrived this morning but have not used it as yet,
waiting for all the backups to complete.

“Screen Sharing” seems like a good option, will have a good look at it.

Have Cc’d the Wamug List so that any others interested can follow.

Many thanks again

Regards

John

Re: New computer

2018-02-10 Thread John Thompson
Thanks Tim,

I would love to have gone down the same track you did but a 27” iMac is way
beyond my means.

My Time Machine backup and External Drive is on a Voyager Q (with thanks to
Daniel Kerr who knows these units well) which does not have USB port, only
Firewire 400 and 800 hence the wait for the adapter.

New computer

2018-02-10 Thread John Thompson
Good Morning List,

I have just recently upgraded my old 2009 MacMini to the latest model, the old
one could not be updated past El Capitan and was getting a little flakey.

My problem now is transferring all data from old to new. As it is MacMini,
there is only one monitor, keyboard and mouse and the new machine no longer
supports Firewire ( still waiting on the arrival of Thunderbolt to Firewire
adapter - thanks Australia Post).

Have been in touch (after long periods of waiting) with Apple Support and have
all the instructions on Immigration Assistant, etc..

My question at the moment is, can I have both machines hooked into the one
monitor and switch easily between them?

Any assistance would be greatfully appreciated.

Thank You

Good morning and Happy New Year to all Wamugians.

It has been a while since my last communication but I have managed to sort
problems out but not this time.

For some unknown reason, my Wife’s iPad 3 has lost intertnet connection
yesterday. I have tried unsuccesfully to re-establish the network but to no
avail. If anyone has any ideas, I would be most greatful.

Thank you

Re: Optical drive problem

2017-02-04 Thread John Thompson
Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this minor problem. I don’t feel
confident enough to tackle the replacement myself but will study the
instructions given and see what transpires. Unfortunately, upgrading the Mac
Mini to a new model will not do the job as Apple, and many other computer
makers, have dropped the optical drive from their latest models. That would
require the additional purchase of an external DVD drive.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions to this problem. I have been unable

play the game but Firefox is fine so will stay with that for the present time.

Hello list members,
It has been a while since I last posted but do still follow/

My problem is a reletively recenty one, only started occurring in the last

I receive several youtube clips from different, but trusted, areas and am not
able to open the video clip. I have checked all the Safari settings and

Mac Mini's

2016-06-10 Thread John Thompson
Good Morning List,

My primary computer is a 7-year old Mac Mini, still going strong and
runniong the latest upgrades but is a little slow in a lot of areas. I have
been thinking of updating to the latest model for a while now but the newer
machines do not come with the optical drive (DVD/CD reader/writer).

My question to the list, is it feasible to link the two Mini’s and
utilise the optical drive and storage on the older one whilst using the new one
as the main computer?

Thanks for any comments.

Hello Peter,
My Mac Mini is late 2009 and the Macbook Pro is 2012. The
intertersting thing I did notice was that the shared doc was not visible on the
draft email but appeared as an attachment on the delivered email which actually
arrived stating “This message has no content”. I guess all will iron out in
due course.

It’s not difficult to do, and there’s a pretty comprehensive description of
 the process at
 http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/moving-apple-mail.htm
 http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/moving-apple-mail.htm. It’s
probably a little more long-winded coverage than I would go to, but it
covers everything. Fundamentally it’s a matter of copying over your Mail
folder from your ~/Library folder, as well as your Mail Preferences, but
rather than try to understand any convoluted process I might describe,
you’ll be just as well off reading the recommended site.

Hello Peter,
Another option which I use regularly is to click the Print menu, when

If still doesn't print - In your Print Settings - Advanced, can you choose

Re: Backup apps

2015-05-19 Thread John Thompson
Hi Ronni,
I am running OS X 10.10.3 and have CCC 3.5.5.. This version of CCC was
received some time ago as part of one of the bundles that were available from
time to time (don’t seem to see those bundle offers anymore). I visited the
Bombich site yesterday and obviously unintentionally downloaded a trial version
of CCC 4.1.2 which enabled me to do the required backup. That is the reason I
thought my copy had finally come to life and upgraded itself in the process. I
know, I am a dreamer.

CCC version 3.5.5 will not load at all. I have tried all possible
avenues but to no avail. I will continue looking through my archives for the
bundle and key that came with my original purchase. Bombich Software do not
appear to have any record of purchase but that is not surprising as some of
these software bundles go through various avenues before reaching their final
destination. I may have to bite the bullet and purchase a new version.

I also have SuperDuper Ver 2.7.2 which was possibly obtained in the
same bundle. Have not tried it but would prefer to use CCC.

Thanks for your input

John

 http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html and
 Bombich Software’s $46 Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/—stand
above the rest. Each has a long history, focuses on cloning, presents a
simple and clear user interface, and includes unusual features that make it
an especially good choice for creating and maintaining bootable duplicates.

Carbon Copy Cloner automatically archives the Recovery HD volume that is
associated with your source volume to a disk image. This archive can later be
restored to another Recovery HD volume, and CCC's Disk Center also offers the
ability to create a new Recovery HD volume on another disk.

SuperDuper does not backup the Recovery HD Volume.

iMovie

2015-03-07 Thread John Thompson
Good Morning members,

Just a small query.

For some years I have been making short personal movies from a bunch of
short clips, either personally shot or downloaded, using iMovie. This has
worked quite well in the past, allowing to cut, clip, title and re-arrange but
with the later versions of iMovie it is nowhere as simple as it has been some
years ago.

Is there any new documentation I can obtain to use with the latest
version? Software does not come with full instructions anymore.

Thank you and hope to catch up with some of you later today.

Re: Safari problem

2015-01-08 Thread John Thompson
Hi Ronni,
Thanks for the info and don’t fret about not replying earlier, it has
been a very busy time for all. Actually, my Wife and I took off for a week at
Jurien just after I posted my last request so couldn’t do much about the
problem anyway.

Thing are now, thanks to your assistance, going fine. It just took the old
computer about two and a half hours to download, install and update the system
and Safari is now back in business.

Thanks again and all the very best for the year and beyond.

Regards

John

 Hi John,

I did mean to reply to your original post, but things got terribly busy my
end and then somehow I was remiss and didn't get back to you :(

Boot to the recovery partition and reinstall the OS (This will ONLY reinstall
the core system and its Apps. Including Safari. No personal data will be
 lost)

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and
hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.
Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down
the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD
and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

 Detailed instructions:
Boot from your Recovery HD partition by restarting your Mac while holding
 down the Command+R keys.
The OS X Utilities window appears. Select Reinstall OS X, and click Continue.
The OS X Yosemite splash screen appears. Click Continue.
A sheet appears informing you that your computer’s eligibility needs to be
verified by Apple. Click Continue to begin the process of installing or
 reinstalling OS X.
If you’re not connected to the Internet, you’ll be asked to choose a Wi-Fi
network from the AirPort menu in the top-right corner.
The Yosemite software license agreement screen appears. Read it and click
 Agree.
A sheet drops down, asking whether you agree to the terms of the license
agreement. Yes, you did just click Agree; this time you’re being asked to
confirm that you indeed clicked the Agree button.
If you don’t click Agree, you can’t go any farther.
Choose the disk on which you want to reinstall OS X by clicking its icon once
in the pane where you select a disk.
If only one suitable disk is available, you won’t have to choose; it will be
 selected for you automatically.
 Click the Install button.
A sheet asks for your Apple ID and password. Type them in the appropriate
fields; click Sign In, and your Yosemite installation reinstallation) begins.
The operating system takes 30 to 60 minutes to install. When the install is
 finished, your Mac restarts itself.
If you were reinstalling Yosemite on the hard disk that it was originally
 installed on, you’re done now.
Your Mac will reboot, and in a few moments you can begin using your new,
freshly installed (and ideally trouble-free) copy of OS X Yosemite.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Apple Inc. showed the email address for my Mandurah friend. All is now well.

 Any ideas?

Apple ID

2014-10-25 Thread John Thompson
For some reason, App Store/Software Update will not accept my Apple ID and
password (which also are my iCloud ID and password - seems to be the standard
thing) when I try to update/upgrade my software and system. It continually
comes back with the incorrect Apple ID showing, one that is very similar but
with a small error, and will not accept the password. This has lead, during
the last several days, to my being compelled to reset my Apple ID and password
numerous times. Each time it must be a new password that has not been used in
the last twelve months. I am running out of options.

Is there any way I can get Apple to accept the new settings? Each time I do
reset it comes back with same old error ID. Getting very sick of this Cloud
nonsense.

Re: Apple ID

2014-10-25 Thread John Thompson

Hi Ronni,
Thanks but I have attempted that several times. The problem occurs
when I try to update/upgrade from the App Store. When I click on update, a
screen pops up requesting I ‘Sign in to download from the App Store’. This
screen as where the incorrect Apple ID is already inserted, greyed and
uncorrectable appears. The error is a transposition of two characters in the
first part of my Apple ID and no password is acceptable. When I innate the App
Store or Software Update directly it accepts my correct ID until I attempt to
actually update items. I am unsure how this error occurred, possibly my own
finger troubles typing initially, but there is no record of the incorrect ID in
my Keychain or anywhere else I can find on the computer.

Until this issue is fixed, I can not update or upgrade.

Regards

John

The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great follow-up
information for once you've changed your Apple ID:

Apple ID: What to do after you change your Apple ID
 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5796

For iCloud on an iOS device it recommends the following:
iOS 6 and later: Go to Settings iCloud.

If you signed out before changing your Apple ID, enter your current Apple ID
 to sign in.
The data from your iCloud account will download to your device.

If you're still signed in with your previous Apple ID:
Scroll down and tap Delete Account.
Depending on what iCloud options are turned on, you'll be asked to confirm
that you want to delete data from your device.

To confirm, tap Delete. (If you're using iOS 7 and have Find My iPhone turned
on, you'll be asked to enter the password for your previous Apple ID. Enter
the password, then tap Turn Off.)
The data will be deleted from your device, but not from iCloud.
Enter your current Apple ID to sign in.
The data from your iCloud account will download again to your device.

Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in. Forgot your password?
Select Edit next to “Apple ID and Primary Email Address.”
Enter the email address to use as your Apple ID, then select Save Changes.

be a simple little task. How wrong can one be? I have managed to change

do I reset the ID’s on my iPhone 4s and iPad 3 without having to delete the

There should be a very simple method but I seem unable to find it.

Thanks for the response Ronni.

I did try the saving/exporting in all the various ways you outlined but without
success. Your second email suggestion, to remove /Library/Internet
Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin” appears to be the answer as the offending file
has now been saved successfully sung Safari. Have no idea how that particular
plug-in managed to get into the system, obviously one of Adobe’s little tricks

When you install or update Adobe Reader, the option to make Reader the
default PDF viewer is turned on by default. Leaving this on (it's just a
simple checkbox) causes Reader to install the plugin. It is very easy to
forget to turn the option off before proceeding with the installation/update.

 Hi Pete

If your Windoze machine is on the same network, you can actually just
migrate from it to the Mac. It will transfer your data, but none of your
Applications obviously. Basically, long story short, all the Windoze My
folders will go to the equivalent Mac folders (e.g. My Pictures goes to
Pictures, My Documents goes to Documents. Desktop to Desktop, My Music to
Music. So the iTunes library will just be there already.
This is generally the easiest way to get it all across.
If you didn't want to do it that way, then you'd do the same manual type of
transfer as above (e.g. My Music on Windows to Music folder on the Mac).
When you open iTunes, it will just adjust it to be Mac friendly. But all
your music and playlists etc will be the same.
I've done a few transfers for clients when supplying the new gear and
transferred it from their Windoze machines for them. Has (generally) been a
simple transfer. (sometimes with a bit of a clean up or manual transfer on
top just for things missed or not gone to plan.) But overall quite easy.
This link may help also -

Re: Mavericks - Unhide the User Library Folder

2013-10-29 Thread John Thompson
Hi Ronni,
It appears that after using Terminal to find ~/Library, it now stays
permanently in the User, or Home, folder.

On 29 Oct 2013, at 1:00 pm, Ronni Brown ro...@mac.com wrote:

 Hi Mavericks adoptees,

Mavericks hides the user Library folder ( ~/Library) by default, just as Lion
 and Mountain Lion do.
You can open it easily enough by holding down Option while choosing Library
from the Finder’s Go menu, or you can use Terminal.app and type the command
chflags nohidden ~/Library (without the quotes) and hit Enter and your User
 Library shows in Finder.

Mavericks introduces an easier way to make the user Library folder visible
all the time—no more fiddling in Terminal.
All you need to do is open your Home Folder in its own window, choose View
Show View Options, and select the Show Library Folder checkbox.

 I would imagine Mavericks will behave the same way Mountain Lion  Lion do;
so ever time an update appears (10.9.1 or 10.9.2), the User Library will be
re-hidden and you'll have to repeat this procedure... but it will be much
quicker than having to go into Terminal every time after each update to the
OS to have ~/Library folder visible all the time.

 Cheers,
 Ronni
