Re: [Wikimedia-l] De-recognition of Wikimedia user groups in Brazil

2018-04-09 Thread Rodrigo Padula
I am very disappointed with this decision and announcement.

Surely anyone who has read this notice must be thinking that Brazil is at war,
in wreckage. But that is not true.

Brazil has never produced so much positive impact in our movement as it has
now. Both groups have extensively created many very innovative initiatives,
making Brazil one of the leading countries among Wikimedia movement:

GLAM reports
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:This_Month_in_GLAM_Brazil_reports

Innovative GLAM partnerships and projects

https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Newsletter/November_2017/Contents/Brazil_report
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Newsletter/February_2018/Contents/Brazil_report

We spread the wikimedia movement in Brazil through many television
participations https://youtu.be/9YOIXPwCqw4?t=46m32s (spreading the Wikipedia
and fundraising campaigns), Radio interviews and many publications in Brazilian
newspapers, portals and blogs. We organized the Brazilian and International
Wikipedia Scientific Conferences, generating lot of new academic papers
regarding the wikimedia movement and improving our relation with the academic
community.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:IWSC

Such misleading narrative about a “war” has been exaggerated in order to prove
to WMF it was a bad call to allow more than one user group in the same region.
But it isn’t. Many countries have more than one group. In fact, a fairly amount
of healthy competition may lead to more initiatives. Such artificial narrative
ended up hurting both sides.

This, of course, doesn’t mean there hasn’t been mistakes and conflicts among
specific members. For sure some conflicts were very unproductive and made us
spend energy in unfruitful discussions. But most members from both groups were
genuinely interested in a peaceful and constructive relationship, being
critical of other members’ refusal to mediation, dialogue and insistence on
extended personal conflicts.

I have tried informal mediation and requested WMF formal mediation several
times. But no formal support was given, just disciplinary measures. This may be
something to learn for the future.

We are moving forward with the professionalization and incorporation of our
user group since 2016, in a very slow process, with very few answers received
from AffCom during this process.

Recent timeline of interactions with AffCom:
19/12/2016 We sent a message to AffCom, regarding our affiliation status
update, because we were working to incorporate our user group as requested by
the Grants team.

07/01/2017 We received an answer from Carlos Colina requesting more information
and our bylaws (originally in portuguese since he speaks portuguese for a first
evaluation)

02/04/2017 We requested a conversation with members of the User Group Wikimedia
Brazil durgin WMCON (they refused to talk), so during Wikimedia Conference I
had a quick conversation with Kirill, about the bylaws sent to Carlos Colina
and the general situation in Brazil.

03/05/2017 We received a new message from Aff requesting the translated by laws

06/2017 I requested mediation from AffCom/Iberocoop to have a conversation
between both groups during Iberoconf in Argentina as informed in our comments
(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Iberocoop:Iberoconf_2017/Preguntas_y_necesidades),
User Group Wikimedia Brasil refused to talk, so we had a conversation only
with Galileo and Carlos Colina from AffCom and we never received any feedback
from this conversation.

26/10/2017 We received a message informing that they received the translated
bylaws for evaluation, no comments about conflicts or problem between the user
groups were cited.

08/04/2018 We received the revocation notice of our affiliation status

I deeply believe in the Wikimedia movement. We have started and signed several
partnerships and projects which be developed during the following years. So,
with or without recognition, support or grants from the Foundation, we will
continue to work, to advocate for open knowledge and to fix the current
situation in Brazil.

We will move on. It will be more difficult and slow, but we will always move
forward.

[Wikimedia-l] UG participation in a TV program in Brasil

2016-08-26 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello all,

Yesterday we participated in a TV program at Futura Channel (an important
educational tv channel in Brasil) talking about collaboration and Wikipedia,
including some information about our scientific event
http://ccbwiki.wikimedia.org.br/.

The video is published online and listed in our site at
http://www.wikimedia.org.br/participacao%20no%20canal%20futura (PT only)

That is the first Brazilian participation in a TV program with good local
repercussion transmitted to the entire country.

Wikimedia India has also launched an edit-a-thon on a similar theme. This

Edit-a-thon page -

What I was thinking here is that in case you get pictures of Indian
athletes, we can include them in the articles created in this edit-a-thon.
Maybe you can create a sub category for Indian athletes..

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves the Olympics - Photo contest

2016-08-05 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello guys,

The Wikimedia Community Brazilian Group of Education and Research launched
today the Wiki Loves the Olympics, a pilot project of an international photo
contest about the Olympics and Paralympic games.

Social networks:

Our focus is Brazil, but the contest is open for all the world.

We are fixing some issues during this week but the contest is already open for
submissions!

In parallel to that initiative, we are running an editing contest in
cooperation with many countries members of the Iberocoop
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_the_Olympics

We need some help to translate our templates and banners on commons and spread
that project around our international community.

Templates on commons:

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Scholarship Decline

2016-03-21 Thread Rodrigo Padula
I had a conversation with Vitor Mazuco about this email and agreed with his
point of view.

Analyzing the list of users from Brazil that received schollarships from WMF
during the last years, I noted that WMF/Scholarship Committees are always
supporting the same group of people not generating opportunities for new
people(and very important contributors) to join and enjoy Wikimania.

Including, some of the users that received support to go to Wikimania never
provided any feedback to our community regarding Wikimania experience,
learnings, knowledge acquired or any kind of reports.

I think the scholarship committee should take in consideration those who have
been to the event several times, so that we can also include more people,
increasing the Wikimania's diversity in all possible ways, avoid so many
repetitions engaging more people into this international movement.

I'm not saying that the users that received support in recent years do not
deserve this support, my point is that we have more people who also deserve to
go to Wikimania and never get this opportunity, sometimes it disengage our
volunteers.

Hello Chico,

The mail goal of that discussion is to see similar cases around the globe and
evaluate the potential impact on the Wikimedia projects.

That info is very important for future proposals and initiatives like that one
proposed on pt.wiki.

After so many discussion and comments regarding Facebook and #freebasics, that
discussion is relevant and very important for the Wikimedia Movement, IMHO!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Facebook marketing inside pt.wikipedia

2016-02-19 Thread Rodrigo Padula
During the WLE an WLM 2015 we created and published some paid campaigns inside
Facebook to reach more people and bring people from Facebook to our contest's
pages inside Wikipedia.

IMHO that it's a good approach, but add a direct link inside wikipedia to
commercial sites/social networks are not a good idea, mainly thinking about
privacy, net neutrality and compatibility with our movement mission. In that
way we are redirecting people from Wikipedia to external sites.

The other problem is, don't matter if we have 5.000 or 1.000.000 of likes in a
Facebook page, to reach that public we always have to pay Facebook ads to
increase reach.

The Facebook is always cutting post's reach to stimulate publishers to pay more
money to reach more people.

Basically we reach more people and get more views and clicks adding USD$10,00
to a Facebook post than having a page with 100.000 likes.

Including, offer an option to promote paid ads only to people that liked your
page and their friends.

So, it's getting hard to grow on Facebook in a organic way, don't matter how
many likes or friends do you have.

considerable effect in drawing attention and attracting contributors to

This was discussed at the Wikimedia Central and Eastern European Meeting

2016-02-18 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello fellows!

Since the end of the last year some contributors from pt.wikipedia are
discussing regarding the idea of including the promotion of our Facebook Page
on site Notice [1]

That proposal was started by Teles, a Brazilian steward. He received a lot of
local support.

The general idea is to bring more people from Facebook to access Wikipedia
through our Facebook page, but what we are doing is redirecting users from
pt.wikipedia to Facebook and including a free Facebook ads on pt.wikipedia.

I would like to know if it is ok for the Wikimedia Movement and if this kind of
Facebook promotional campaign was proposed and published in other
wikipedias/wikimedia projects.

Since R-Argenton provided some messages written by me in public opposition
against R-Padula in the past year, let's me write few lines updating the
subject.

R-Padula acted in many disruptive ways in a very complex Game of Thrones
WMF edition that ended in project results and partial lost of community
interest. Emphasis on partial. I'll explain it in another point of this
message. Let's say that R-Padula is our local Petyr Baelish.

R-Argenton for years is behind brazilian volunteers most of time on yet
more disruptive ways plus doing almost nothing on online projects or even
on outreach activities. Argenton may replies to it as "because I'm
blocked!" and I leaves to those who may be interested to think for the
reasons a community will choose to block a very experienced contributor.

Please don't read this as I advocating for Padula. Quite the opposite, I'm
only suggesting to ignore the bad mood from Argenton and really focus on
measurements and governance points proposed by Fæ.

Time to write few lines about the "partial lost of community interest"
point.

The now defunct Programa Catalisador do Brasil revealed the bad side of
some people (R-Argenton excluded from this, at least) and created a very
interesting GoT WMF remix that ended in many political fights exactly as on
the HBO series. But the community members where all benevolent zombies,
sometimes attending events, but most of time doing nothing. Nothing at all.

I personally leaved any attempt to do 'real-world' things after the renew
of Wikimedia Community User Group Brasil (not to be confused with the UG
that R-Padula is the leader). As far I can see, the last action of that UG
was to get renewed and eventually being present on Wikimania... Well, I
*really* don't want to say any more on this UG.

My current involvement to WMF is only to do random things on Wikisource and
Wikidata as I can do random things on any website, without further
interest. Not only due to the GoT WMF.br remixed edition, but also for many
issues on a more global level (WMF is constantly contracting new staff and
their servers are most unstable than back in 2004-2005... Only in sake of
example, since there are REALLY many issues, T71311
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T71311>;, a huge data loss, is still
unsolved most due to the laziness of the involved staff while in any normal
entity it may result in an entire team working until solve it... should I
do anything on governance issues related to resources allocated to Brazil
while in the meantime the WMF is doing anything on their own governance,
only spending money on fees until gets bankrupt and with all data lost
forever in a huge bug not so hypothetical as many of you think? Not ever).
So, please, don't refer anymore to any past message written by me,
R-Argenton and any other portuguese-speaking person.

If the money collected by the WMF is bad spent in Brazil maybe is because
the WMF is entirely at this moment only bad spending their resources. So
there is no need to demonize R-Padula, since the entire WMF should stop
in different ways to reinvent the wheel and start producting things that
uses wheels.

[Wikimedia-l] Enc: Re: WLM Brasil 2015 - Winners / Numbers

2015-10-31 Thread Rodrigo Padula
I cant see any relation in the "literature" regarding photo contests prizes and
monthly average wage :-)

So our study was based on local photo contests prizes, international prizes and
a reasonable value for a non-profit organization in a way that the value is
interesting for a amateur or a professional to spend some time loading photos
on commons, since great part of the Brazilians don't know our mission and what
Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons our Wikimedia Foundation really is!

During WLE 2015 we spent R$10.000 in two categories: best photo and best
contributions

For each category the prizes was:

1º R$2000
2º R$1500
3º R$1000
TOTAL: R$10.000

- 4.453 photos
- 411 uploaders

Now for WLM 2015 we announced just one category, best photos with R$6.000 in
prizes

1º R$3.000,00
2º R$2.000,00
3º R$1.000,00
TOTAL: R$6.000

- ~13.000 photos
- ~2.000 uploaders

There are a lot of variables, but the value of the prizes and categories can
influence the final results for sure.

2015-10-31 Thread Rodrigo Padula
We did a long research in 2014 to define the prizes as described in the budget
request and reports to WMF.

A lot of contests in Brasil pay prizes around R$10.000-R$60.000, the value of
the prizes that we gave in Brasil are considered low by many participants and
professionals in that field.

As described on the grant requests, the prizes was approved by GAC and WMF
staff my friend.

I really cant get your point here! You had the opportunity to organize this
contest for many years and nothing was done.

Why you never tried to organize that contests by yourself following your
recomendations, ideas and values of prizes since you are so interested in that
subject?

Our planning pages are always open to contributions, not fallacies. To
criticize is always the easiest way to feel contributing. Just do something my

I see a lot of good results and contributions here and as pointed by Ilario, we
reached great part of our measures of success

WLM 2015
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaign:wlm-br
- 4.453 photos
- 411 uploaders
- 325 new users registered on commons

WLM 2014+2015
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaign:wle-br
- 20 095 photos
- 2866 uploaders
- 2727 new users registered on commons

Only to complete, the first place on WLE 2014 was elected the second place on
the WLE 2014 International and that same picture was selected in 7# place
during the picture of the year on commons.

Now in 2015 we have more pictures selected in the WLE international contest.

Including all the media coverage and all impact on social media, for a small
User Group approved in 2015, it's huge!!!

New users engagement: 79%

Are the goals reached? Basically yes. When the project has been financed
it was clear that the definition "success" was based on those measures.

There is no success for a specific person on an individual and personal
criteria.

The user group of Brazil has not asked nothing special, this is a normal

coordination of the Prof. Edson Correa. All press releases and content
published and sent to our media partners was created and revised by the teacher
Prof. Dr. Marcio Gonçalves and students from a local university in Rio de

I know you're just trying to attack me personally, but what you are doing is
disqualifying all the efforts of all Wikimedia movement responsible for
devising and organizing competitions like the WLE and WLM around the world and
for that you have no contributions and much less support any group that can
give you legitimacy for this.

I recommend to you to change your strategy and try to do something positive for

"success of WLE Brasil 2015"

Success for whom?

*For the Wikimedia Commons **it was totally **innocuous. *

Less then 0,16% was a good quality image, including several snapshots
(mobile made), downsized images; the retention probably will follow WLE
BR 2014 and goona be very close to 0. No work was developed in conjunction
with the WCommons, and could created a problem, people got paid with
thousands for bad photos, and volunteers there producing real content...
And this money, more then 30'000 USD, come from WMF for the WLE 2014/15 and
WLM in Brazil, and in the other hand, WP-en removed hundreds of people
getting paid for contribution, how it's different? Oh yeah, the money did
not came from donations...

*For the Wikipedia it was barely nothing.*

The volume of images used was very low, and even in the list of winners, a
lot of those images do not have any education purpose, or do not properly
illustrates the site. And very low involvement of the community, retention
was none.

For the "off-line community" , :D...

Were are this people? The other coordinator named in the website [1], are
not even close to be involved with the community, check his FB:[2], very
active, none WLE/WLM publications... Commons: [3], any help with this
contests. People listed in the WUG group did not signed by themselves[4]...

And " including contributions from teachers and students..."??? "educational
program."??? I think that "they" are hidden it in a very deep place, not
even "their" website have any clues fof that[5], or "their" Facebook [6],
Meta [7]... "Their" partners are not related to educational programmes [8],
most of them are related to photography, for obvious reasons. as far we can
see, "they" are just burn WMF money to make this contests (for ???)...

*Two observation:*

.ORG.BR are websites restricted to ONG registered in legal terms here in
Brazil, or they already have a legal association and are not telling to
AffCom, or they don't have that and is putting the Wikimedia name in
some scheme
circumventing laws...

*The scope of the group, which can be found on their application, is "to
support the participation of teachers, researchers and employees of several
national institutions that participate in the Education Program of
Wikimedia in Brazil, aiming to integrate the academic community to the
Wikimedia movement, creating a more friendly and responsive environment for
the development of projects, research, contests, events and other
activities." *[9]

How this contests are related to this scope?

[Wikimedia-l] Enc: Re: WLM Brasil 2015 - Winners / Numbers

2015-10-31 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello Illario and Jane,

Thanks by your comments. That is exactly the point!

WLM and WLE are not only about the number of pictures loaded and the general
quality of the pictures. It's about our mission and new users engagement too.

That is what our group is trying to do here, teach people about our mission and
what Wikipedia and commons really is and how to contribute. Unfortunately we
receive more international community support than local support #SadButTrue.

As you can read in all planning pages, grant requests and emails, Rodrigo
Argentom is always there trying to create barriers, posting negative comments
and generating unfruitiful discussions. We never received any contribution or
constructive comment from him, so I decided to just ignore him and move forward
with our ideas and objectives. Based on that bad behavior he was blocked in
many Wikimedia projects (pt.wikipedia and etc) and as I know, he is not part of
any group, he is only around with that old trash talking.

Based on the level of maturity of our Brazilian community and the low interest
of that community in off-line activities like WLM, WLE, GLAM and etc, is a
utopia to think that in a single project we will collect a huge amount of
pictures, with high level of quality and that all the photographers will join
on commons, will categorize properly all the pictures and they will look at
Wikipedia and will add the good pictures there, it will never happens here, not
without a massive support from the local community.

We will have to do it in many steps, right now we are just a small user group
trying to move forward, we are not a chapter with payed staff and a lot of
people working on this full time, we are just a group of students, teachers and
researchers doing what we can, when we can.

The WLE and WLM are generating a good impact in Brasil with a good media
coverage and a lot of positive external comments.

We had many posts published on blogs, important portals, printed
magazines(60.000 copies) and newspapers regarding the contest, spreading our
objectives and the final results.

- WLE 2015 media coverage:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2015_in_Brazil/Planning#Mat.C3.A9rias_na_m.C3.ADdia
- WLM event page access statistics:
http://stats.grok.se/pt/latest90/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2015/Brasil
- WLM 2015 media coverage:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2015_in_Brazil/Planning#Publica.C3.A7.C3.B5es

For both contests we used strategies and campaigns on social media, reaching
hundreds of thousands of people.

During WLM we get an important structured list of monuments from the Brazilian
gov and now we are in touch with IPHAN, the institute responsible by protect
and register the national monuments in Brasil. So, for the next years we will
have conditions to improve and increase the list of monuments. This king of
stuff are positive impact

WLE and WLM are only the beginning of our efforts to move forward with the
Wikimedia Movement here in Brasil.

I know that I shall meet many barriers and many "R. Argentoms" along the way,
but I will continue fighting for our mission, that is bigger than anyone of us
;-)

[Wikimedia-l] WLM Brasil 2015 - Winners / Numbers

2015-10-30 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello my friends,

After many years of Wiki Loves Monuments around the world, finally we organized
an edition of that important photo contest in Brasil.

Following the success of WLE Brasil 2015(supported by our fellows from
Wikimedia Ukraine) and counting with a lot of support from Romaine we finally
completed that task after years of procrastination.

The WLM Brasil 2015 was organized by the Wikimedia Community Brazilian Group of
Education and Research, including contributions from teachers and students in a
new approach for our educational program.

Teachers and students from local universities supported us with
marketing/communication and in the final process of pictures filtering for the
judges evaluation.

You can see the final result of WLM Brasil and the winners at
http://www.wikimedia.org.br/wiki-loves-monuments-brasil-2015-vencedores.html

Pictures uploaded: 4.443
Uploaders: 411
New users registered on Commons: 325
New users engagement: 79%
Pictures user on Wikipedia: 86 (2%)

That page is suggesting some sort of non-derivative variant (saying that
you should not 3d-print it in colour (also strangely specifying the metal
to silver, excluding more common 3d-printing metals such as aluminium or
stee, all the while there are pins in the Wikimedia Store that, judged by
the price, probably not are silver)). I thought the logo was under a CC
BY-SA license.

It is also strange that it does not allow printing it in, for instance a
blue plastic, to later paint white with black letters. Is there any special
meaning behind that or is it just vague wording? I.e. is it supposed to
target steps in the manufacturing process rather than the end result?

That file description page is unclear on the license. Could someone fix

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Number of new User Groups

2015-10-18 Thread Rodrigo Padula
IMHO, the idea of the user groups is not to divide the community, the main goal
is to create the opportunity for small communities to work in the same
direction, learn with each other and have a framework to work together,
learning from and sharing experiences.

The user group is an important step to move forward to a thematic organization
or chapter based on the learnings and experiences acquired after some projects
and activities. It can be a good opportunity to professionalize the community
and avoid frustrated attempts to create a chapter or thematic organization with
no previous experience.

For sure we will need more guidance and dedicated activities during the next
conference in Berlin. Having a dedicated event, IMHO will not generate the same
opportunity that we have to learn from chapters like WM UK, WM MX, WM DE and
etc in an event like WMCON.

For me, the opportunity to see what active chapters are doing was crucial to
organize here in Brazil 2 editions of WLE and our first edition of WLM.

I guess we are in the right direction and the types of grants available,
including the new simple annual plan project, will generate excellent impacts
to the movement during the next years.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] 2014-15 Wikimedia Fundraising Report

2015-09-30 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Excellent report!

I'm really impressed with the low level of donations from Latina America.

We need to do something to stimulate people to contribute a little bit more
to our mission.

During the first two weeks of the campaign in Brasil, I received a lot of
messages from friends requesting information about the Wikipedia banners
asking for donations, a lot of people thought that it was spam, spyware or
something fake. So, I guess the low level of donations from Brasil
(specially) can be linked with that issue.

In August I started a local effort talking to some journalists regarding
the importance of the donations to our movement.

I contacted some of our contacts to spread it, and many posts was published
here regarding the fund-raising campaign, with a really good impact.

http://bit.blog.br/wikipedia-pede-doacoes-para-ajudar-a-manter-site-no-ar/
( interview replicated on twitter and facebook of
http://diariodepernambuco.com.br/ to more than 800.000 followers)

http://g1.globo.com/tecnologia/noticia/2015/08/wikipedia-pede-doacoes-para-se-manter-independente.html

What we can do to help to improve the local level of donations? I'm really
interested to help with that problem here and our user group can spend some
time on it, for sure it is something that need some attention.

How can I get more information about the donations from Brasil, mainly to
identify if after the news published by the local media it improved(or not)
the level of donations?

There are any way to track it?

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Recognition of Wikimedians of the Levant User Group

2015-05-22 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Congratulations!

That is awesome to see some many approved user groups.

I think that type of affiliation with less bureaucracy and easy recognition
will improve a lot the movement, bringing a good number of new people to
the Wikimedia Movement.

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Earth - Statistics tool

2015-05-13 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello my friends,

Yesterday we have updated the tool developed by our team for the WIki Loves
Earth 2014.

So, from now you can see the numbers and statistics of the WLE 2015 through
the link https://tools.wmflabs.org/ptwikis/WLE2015

In general, the numbers are increasing very well based on the current
average.

The WLE Brasil 2015 is going very well too, with the new users engagement
near 96% of the total of participants(bringing 554 new users to Commons)
and more than 3.000 photos.

Contributions and suggestions are welcome.

Best regards

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Evaluation by WMF of Wiki Loves Monuments is failing to understand the community

2015-05-06 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello my friends,

I didn't have the opportunity to organize a WLM contest yet, but I had the
opportunity to organize the Brazilian WLE last year and I'm promoting that
same contest here in Brasil this year again.

Quantitative analysis are always easier to do than qualitative analysis. In
that case WMF is always trying to show how the money was spent, how much
and the direct impact of that effort.

So, basically we are always measuring using metrics of the conversion of
money/time to edits/new users engagement and retention.

IMHO, WLE and WLM are bigger than this and these projects are very complex
with many types of results and direct and mainly, indirect impacts to the
Wikimedia Projects and movement in general.

By example, last year we organized an exhibition
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Brasil/Exposi%C3%A7%C3%A3o
with the TOP500 photos collected during the WLE Brasil 2014. So, during
that exhibition so many people from many classes, ages, cities and level of
knowledge passed by the exhibition and read the contest descriptions and
they got more information regarding the Photo Contest, WLE, Wikipedia,
Commons and the Wikimedia movement. Since we can't track the visitors
behavior after the exhibition, we cant say anything regarding the results
of that activity based on the regular metrics, used by default. So, based
in things like that we cant publish any final report with the real impact
of the exhibition translated in some numbers.IMHO that report regarding WLM
don't reflect the real impact of the contest, we can see there only some
simple numbers and conversions and this kind of report can generate a lot
of misunderstanding when accessed by the regular media.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Recognition of Wikimedia Community Brazilian Group of Education and Research

2015-04-13 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Oh my god!!

A guy that was blocked in many Wikimedia projects due to bad behavior come
here to talk about "trust" sounds funny.

One of the reasons I have focused on work with some teachers and serious
people to create a new proposal of a user group was just that, keep them away
from these fallacies and old discussions regarding the creation of a chapter
.

All these problems and deconstructive arguments keeps people away from the
Wikimedia movement in Brazil.

With this new proposal and the new group recently approved, I intend to work in
another direction, focused more on projects and results than trash talking.

The recognition of AffCom and WMF is only the first step. You surely will
receive frequent reports of our activities and results over the next months.

Thanks to all members of the AffCom, Iberocoop and other chapters by the
support and knowledge shared during the last year, that culminated with
that recognized proposal.

During the next months/years we will try to keep in touch to learn from
your experiences and activities.

Best regards to everyone.

Good! You just confirmed my point of view!!

Probably the cost / benefit of the Brazilian Catalyst Program was not the
best one, but the program ended fulfilling its catalytic role of the
Brazilian community, supporting the creation of networking, partnerships
and activities.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] User Group Brazil Activities Report

2015-02-25 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Interestingly to see on the report that even under so much criticism,
the Brazilian Catalyst Program, coordinated by Oona Castro through a
partnership between the Wikimedia Foundation and Ação Educativa was
crucial in creating and supporting great part of the activities listed
by the user group, since its foundation.

Best regards and congratulations to all the people involved.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Renewal of Recognition to Wikimedia Community User Group Brasil

2015-02-23 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello Carlos,

Thanks by all information regarding the new Affcom's decisions for an
user group renewal.

Only to clarify, my question was based on the Wikimedia User Group
Agreement where is specified that an User Group and its agents must
submit a written activity report in English to the community each
year.

More specifically, on the item 3.Your Obligations.

"You and your User Group must: d.submit, as instructed by WMF, an
annual written activity report in English to the Wikimedia community
and WMF;"

This obligation changed too?

My point is not to cause any trouble, I'm asking it here only because
we, the members and people that endorsed the Wikimedia Community User
Group Brasil did not receive any information regarding the renewal
application or any report was published on pt.wikipedia or
br.wikimedia.org.

Best regards

Rodrigo Padula

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Earth Brasil - Exhibition

2014-10-15 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello fellows!

Concluding our participation and activities on Wiki Loves Earth, we
organized an exhibition during the event "Paraty em Foco" in the
historical city of Paraty - Rio de Janeiro.

During the event (Sep 24-28) the exhibition received near 1.500
visitors daily and the exhibition continued until October 12.

The exhibition was exhibited inside the Casa da Cultura, an historical
building constructed during the 18th century
(https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_Loves_Earth_Brasil_2014_-_Exhibition_-_Casa_da_Cultura.JPG)
that is a cultural reference in the region.

Students from the near islands/beaches visited the exhibition during
Paraty em Foco, as you can see here http://migre.me/mihhY

I've published some pictures and information about the exhibition here
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2014/Brasil/Exposi%C3%A7%C3%A3o
(in portuguese)

We received a lot of visibility during the WLE, generating excellent
results for Wikimedia Commons. Near 900 new users and 7.000 photos
uploaded.

The contest and exhibition was published in many sites and blogs,
including a printed magazine with 50.000 copies distributed around all
Brazilian states.

The WLE contest and exhibition were organized through the Brazilian
Program with the support of Ação Educativa(local WMF's partner).

local Photo Studio to organize our first photographic exhibition during the
international photography event "Paraty em Foco", which will be held in
September 2014 in the historic city of Paraty - Rio de Janeiro (more
information on http:// paratyemfoco.com )

- Publication of the final results and winners
The contest results were announced by national media, wikimedia mail lists
and it will be published through the printed/digital magazine Fotografe
Melhor(Photo magazine with the largest circulation and importance in
Brazil) in the August edition with distribution in all Brazilian states
(50,000 copies monthly) and shipped to some other countries.

I would like to thank the Brazilian community members who contributed to
the contest and a special thanks to our friends from Wikimedia Ukraine that
provided all the necessary support for the successful organization of the
local contest.

Best regards

Without a doubt, the deutsch chapter is a reference and will remain for a

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Earth - Brasil - Data/statistics tool

2014-05-13 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello guys,

Since that is our first participation in an international photo contest, we
discussed locally about ways to have more information about what is working
well, the results and the real impact on commons of all our efforts around
Wiki Loves Earth here in Brasil.

So, the Brazilian User Group studied and specified a tool, developed by
Danilo (Danilo.mac on pt.wiki and member of the user group as well) to read
database information and generate a complete report about the Wiki Loves
Earth, including all participating countries listed on commons.

The tool is hosted on the server wmflabs.org under the URL
http://tools.wmflabs.org/ptwikis/WLE

Through this tool you can have a general idea of what is going on: number
of photos uploaded, photos used on wikis, number of uploaders(with complete
list and registration date by country) and the percentage of many
information, including uploaders registered in May 2014 during the contest.

I guess that tool can help each country to define metrics to evaluate local
efforts/results and can be useful for other local contests as well.

That's our first time organizing this kind of project and we are learning a
lot, until now we received more than 1.000 photos with 94% of uploaders
registered in May 2014(200 new users for the Wikimedia Commons in 13 days).

Now we are planning a bot to provide guidance and keep in touch with that
new users after the contest ends.

Best regards!
