Re: [WISPA] Indoor CPE install / window glass type determination

2009-05-05 Thread Jason Hensley
We have quite a few indoor installs and I hate them. There are many issues
that you can't control: access to the radio (as mentioned below), children,
cleaning folks, dogs, etc etc. We do our best not to do indoor installs,
but we have particular apartment complex that won't let us install outside,
so we have to put the CPE's in windows. Some go in attics, but I wouldn't
even consider doing an indoor install for anything over about 1/4 mile (and
this is all 2.4Ghz). Our signal seems inconsistent at best sometimes, etc
etc.

I agree that you're opening a can of worms you might not want. I would
highly advise against it unless you just HAVE to do it to get the customer,
but even then I would think hard about it.

I would advise against doing it. If the CPE is inside it makes fixing
customer problems harder (especially 900MHz/2.4GHz since the noise has even
less barriers to the CPE) and makes it that the customer has to be home to
work on the CPE or to deinstall the CPE.

Sounds like your opening up a can of worms... and I'm not sure what the gain
would be (sure quicker installs, but the customer is paying for that
right?). I cringe at the thought of customer installed CPE's...

With that said I have installed Canopy SM's through windows occasionally for
special circumstances and have had little issues with them... besides of
course tinted windows or energy efficient windows (but depending on distance
it might not be an issue).

I've even deployed 2.4GHz Wi-Fi based gear in attics with absolutely
no-LOS... once again not recommended but you gotta do what you gotta do
sometimes.

It has reached over $1k from 4 subs over the past 6 months. Do you just
cut your losses and move on or what do you do? I'm contemplating small
claims court as it should be an open and shut case, but it's $91 in fees

:)

Actually I have a high regard for my customers, it's the ones that try
to game me that invokes nasty thoughts.

One trick I have learned over the years, if you turn a sub off and
"expect to get paid" make sure they get turned off during business hours
so they can call in and make arrangements to pay up.
Otherwise they may be gone by the time business opens and you will never
see any money.

Re: [WISPA] Handling Non-paying Subs

2009-05-05 Thread Bob Moldashel
Honestly I find it best to do it first thing Monday AM before they get in.

Then they can't check e-mail and the secretaries can't listen to online
music, go to Facebook or do IM and it suddenly becomes an urgent issue.

Great to play the office staff against management. :-)

I've had moderate success just making a personal visit to see how the
 people
 are doing.

If they're out of a job and no income, we cut the bandwidth way down and
suspend billing for a while. If internet can help them get a job, then
it's in our interest to do this.

Generally, we have pretty good success with a personal visit. I'm not
confrontational, but explain that we really do expect to be paid and the
customer's generally pretty good at paying when they see it as a matter of
 personal importance.

Other than that, we've not found that notes, or emails works well.

Re: [WISPA] Crude dictionary attack via ssh

2009-05-05 Thread jp
I'm suprised nobody else has mentioned this...

hosts.allow/hosts.deny

It's simple, and dosen't depend on the firewall software to be running.

hosts.deny allows you to deny access from all IPs (or specific ones)
hosts.allow lets you override the deny file with the IP ranges or less securely
the domain
names of hosts you wish to allow.

We do it on all servers, and allow SSH access only as needed. Problem prevented
instead of
problem solved.

If staff needs to get into our servers while traveling, they can VPN into our
VPN servers and then they'd have access.

If it's a backend server, also consider not putting a public IP on it. We have
lots of
servers running 10.x IP numbers that don't need to be accessed from the
Internet. Things
like radio/snmp monitoring, xen hypervisors, workstations, office file servers,
etc...

[WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Pat O'Connor
I was thinking a $35 fee for on site setup. A $20 fee if they brought
the router in within 48 hrs of the scheduled installation date. Is
this appropriate? What are the rest of you doing?

Thanks,

Pat

If you bring the router into the office, it's free. Honestly, takes a
tech five minutes to do, and it's goodwill.

If you insist on having it done on-site, we charge our standard
truck-roll fee.

My broadband customers all paid little extra to have my service and
those types pay their bills on time.

Yeah, I know. But after fixing what geeksquad or *shudder* Staples
breaks over and over (usually for free because I am easy) I just had to
throw that in.

My favorite customer quote: "IT CAN'T BE BROKEN, IT MUST BE YOUR
SERVICE! STAPLES FIXED IT!!!" In this case, I was being blamed for a
printer not working oh, I plugged it into the USB port to fix it!

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Pat O'Connor
Lol. That's the same crap I go through with the local Radio Shack.

This happened just yesterday.

Radio Shack: "Your service isn't working we can't connect to the
internet"

Me: (after verifying settings on the router) Do you have the cable
from the POE injector plugged into port 1 again on the router, or is it
in the WAN port?

Radio Shack: Oh Uh Sorry.

No less than 5 times this year already.

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Eje Gustafsson
Isn't it funny how your responsible for ALL computer issues because you
deliver internet access to people? All a sudden if their scanner or printer
don't work or even if their monitor don't work it's all a sudden your fault
because you deliver internet to them..

I hooked up to your internet 5 months ago and now my printer isn't working
right.. You need to fix this because we didn't do anything to the computer
it's your internet. *shudder*

*sigh*

I won't sell the router just because I don't even want them to think I

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread jp
If you setup a router, it's pretty much a guarantee that you'll be setting up a
couple
notebooks and a PC as well. Perhaps also a tivo, xbox, ps3, ipod touch,
printer, and who
knows what else. You should also provide good documentation, because you're on
the hook
whenever they want to add something, or take their notebook somewhere else,
bring it back,
and wonder why it doesn't work. $35 is fine for a high school student to charge
for an
onsite setup, but not for a business that customers might have high technical
expectations
of.

Nope. Best Buy and they are still there. Circuit city called their Geek Squad
copy cat service Firedog. But was to little and to late. Plus Best Buy made a
better job on pushing and advertising their Geek squad plus had a better name
and gimmick if you ask me that made them stick better then Firedog (kinda
stupid name if you ask me. Name didn't really reflect what they did and stood
for IMO).

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Scott Reed
We don't charge to set it up, if the purchase it to install with the
wireless installation.
We charge $10.00 to setup one they at install or if they bring it to us.
Otherwise, standard $60.00/hr on-site fees apply.
As someone else said, documentation is critical. We keep a copy of the
security key and password at the office because we get several calls a
month, "I just bought a laptop and it wants to know the security key."

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Brian Rohrbacher

Same here.  Free if they provide it.  $75 including router is we do
it.  Why, because we want it secured so the neighbors can't have my
service for free, so we can password it so they can't screw it up, and
we also turn on remote management so we can help them remotely if we
want to.  I watch the internet and by 10-20 dollar refurb wireless
routers and I think I make out pretty good.  And for the ones that die,
we replace them no questions asked for the first year (because they are
refurb)

Guys...

Don't do anything for free.

Bill them for it, and discount that price from the bill, but
don't say free or no charge.

Customers will never appreciate "Free" unless they are
made aware that thing they got for "Free" had a value.

Now, they feel like you really took care of them, and

We provide a wireless router for free as part of the install. We
started doing that over 5 years ago. We also setup all their computers
(either cable or wireless) for free (except the cost of the wireless
USB adapters). That's what makes us different than the cableco or

Re: [WISPA] What do you charge for a wireless router setup?

2009-05-05 Thread Tom DeReggi
Agreed, We do the same. It didn't take long to realize that our support was
easier with a consistent brand in place, and kowing they were configured by a
pro quickly at install time, instead of timely on a tech support phone call.
Its factored into the flat rate price, automatically. When we get onsite, If
the customer already has a router in place, and it meets our standard and known
working, we will usually credit them $40, and provide free install of it. They
deserve choice of router, we just want to make sure our installers aren;t held
up, and that the customer already preapproved the cost for the installer to
install our supplied routers if that is what we determine that we need to do.

Free if they bring it in. Free to try to talk them through it on phone. If
they can wait tell we are in there area and have time just a small charge.
Special trip equals service call.

Never sell routers anymore if we can help it! Nothing like selling one to
someone 30 miles away and when it quits you have to drive 30 miles and swap
it on the spot. Ugh.

Occationally, a few will get through the cracks. Usually, a personal
phone call dor visit will do the trick. Sometimes I'll offer them a
discount for catching it up. I have learned the hard way though to
keep a tight leash. Nothing is perfect but policy #1 is that they get
no internet unless their account is current.

Ya know - I used to think that way but then I realized I was doing
that all the time and not taking care of the necessary things
including my family. NOBODY should complain about someone charging
fair market value for their time. Furthermore, you can forget the
goodwill bit - as soon as someone offers cheaper they'll switch. There

2009-05-05 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
We just set them up at the time of install. If they get a router later
we'll help over the phone. If we have to go there it's a standard $50
service call.
