[WISPA] motorola mesh

2006-04-05 Thread Dylan Oliver
Anyone know anything about Motorola's 802.11 mesh products? Are they
rebranding someone else's gear (as it appears they did with Orthogon)
or building their own? I haven't heard anything about it, but just
found the marketing on my most recent visit to canopywireless.com.

Any success stories with mesh muni wireless yet? I just attended a
'Wireless Wisconsin' conference largely about Milwaukee's project,
which is being done by Midwest Fiber Networks. They've not resolved on
a vendor yet, but claim that they'll build quickly because they will
operate the network independently: they only lease the city's
infrastructure.

What's the problem with a usage-based fee structure? That's the obvious
way to make more in the middle. Move more bits, make more money. It
does cost something after all. I don't know that it makes sense to
differentiate forms of media - voice from video from music. Priority
might be billable, but would get busy quick.

Usage-based billing may not be the norm but it's a little less crazy
than building [Google,Ebay,Amazon].net. Anyone try this? I like
pay-as-you-go models like that offered by Teliax for voice, myself. And
I'm alright with the idea that if I'm downloading 80 gigs a month I
ought to pay more than my ma checking her email.

I wonder what Motorola will decide to do with Mesh. They appear to have three distinct platforms now: HotZone (rebranded Tropos), MOTOMESH (MeshNetworks; not Wi-Fi), and MEA. Or rather MEA radios are included in MOTOMESH 4-radio units? ::
A Technical View Of MOTOMESHEvery MOTOMESH access point
contains two standards-based 802.11 (Wi-Fi) radios and two of
Motorola's widely acclaimed Mesh Enabled Architecture (MEA®) mobile
broadband radios. One set of Wi-Fi and MEA radios operate in the
unlicensed 2.4GHz band, and one set operates in the licensed 4.9GHz
public safety band.Oh, I get it (I think). MEA provides backhaul between mesh units, while the 802.11 serve the public. Anyone ever hear of how this platform actually performs? I wonder why Motorola isn't pushing these harder. Has Tropos so stolen the thunder they can't properly market their own solution?
Canopy™ HotZone* is a
dedicated solution for communities concerned primarily with improving
public Internet access and eliminating the digital divide.  Combining
unlicensed standards-based WiFi radios and Canopy system backhaul to
support the cost-effective deployment of wide area broadband wireless.
HotZone solutions offer remarkable efficient and cost-effective public
access capabilities. Click to see how it works.

Motorola's MOTOMESH™ multi-radio
broadband solution, whose architecture supports up to four radio (2.4
& 4.9 GHz) networks in a single access point, enables complete
municipal-wide wireless connectivity for public access, public works
and public safety.

  Motorola's Mesh Enable Architecture (MEA®)
technology is a private mobile broadband solution that delivers desktop
applications into the field at highway speeds.  The MEA network
features Motorola's unique Multi-Hopping capabilities turning each
mesh-enable radio into a router/repeater.  As a result, every user
makes the network stronger.

Re: [WISPA] Auction 66

2006-04-27 Thread Dylan Oliver
The way Chairman Copps talked about it at a recent conference in Milwaukee, I got the idea the auction might be approachable for a small business. Cellular market areas would be a WISP's (or consortium of WISPs) best bet in terms of number available (734 - we're bound to get at least one ... right?), size and demographics - but they are also some of the most valuable because they allocate 2x10 MHz channels vs the 2x5 MHz channels of blocks C-F (B gives 2x10 for 176 economic areas).
And then there's the question of what to do with it. Huawei was the first to announce UMTS gear for 1700 MHz. I haven't heard what else is in the pipeline. It's a crapshoot. But the potential is awesome. Re: the 2x channels .. does this mean two licenses will be rewarded per area? Or one license will get both? Or both together make the thing "duplex"?

$848k for control of a 2x10 MHz chunk over a fairly large rural area for 15 years is not bad at all. Why turn off UPnP if you don't know what it does? Wikipedia has a good

Bottom-posting is good, for one, because it encourages one to delete
all the irrelevant text you top-posters leave at the bottom. Also,
it's great for responding to messages point-by-point.

Hi Jack,These are known as Studio Transmitter Links, and we've planned a few for our local radio conglomerates as the licensed 950 MHz STL space is rapidly melting down (who'd ever guess there could be so much interference in a licensed band!). Unlicensed is fine in many cases, but but any commercial station with advertising dollars at stake should look at licensed links and definitely needs fast-failover to ISDN, DSL, etc with adaptive codecs.

PLEASE send me an OFF-LIST email with the zips. I'll put them all in one
doc and will then have someone run them through a program that will give
us
population numbers for each zip.

If you guys think it's reasonable I can then release those results (you'll
know more about your zip code demographics) or keep them private. Either
way is fine with me.

I need this data for three things. One is regulatory/legislative clout.
Everyone wants to know how many people are affected by wisps. Two is
disaster relief. I need to know what zip codes are covered so that we can
find operators near disasters easier. Third is a national
roaming/wholesale
program I'm working on (think cell phone like abilities with broadband!).

[WISPA] changes to ULS for 3650

2007-09-28 Thread Dylan Oliver
I just ran across a notice regarding changes to the ULS to accomodate the
new 3650 band. The notice is dated September 9th, so this may well be old
news:

http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/data/documentation/pa_changes28.pdf

This doesn't really tell me anything beyond "they're working on it."

Re: [WISPA] AT&T To Buy Wireless Spectrum From Aloha Partners For $2.5 Billion

2007-10-09 Thread Dylan Oliver
You're right that Aloha paid $43.3 million for their first 77 licenses in
the auction. They then went on to buy out Cavalier and DataCom:

…In a related development, on February 1, 2005, Aloha Partners LP announced
that it will purchase Cavalier Group LLC and DataCom Wireless LLC,
respectively the second and third largest owners of 700 MHz spectrum in the
US. Aloha Partners now has spectrum sufficient for a (mostly) nationwide
network, including spectrum in the top ten urban markets and "84% of the top
forty urban markets". (Steve Stroh, as quoted at
http://www.dailywireless.org/2005/02/25/the-700-mhz-club/)

Cavalier bought their markets for around $10 million. DataCom bought theirs
for about $5 million.

The $2.5 billion AT&T paid to cover 196 million people works out to
$12.76 per person. Compare this to the average paid per person in
Auction 44 - about $0.55!

It would also have the happy side-effect of doubling your license
coordination business!

But seriously, I see how attempting to contact out-of-business companies is
a waste of time - but is it any different from attempting to contact
in-business companies? Take the address out of the database and send mail.
They reply within thirty days or don't. It's not your responsibility to
track them down if they haven't updated the EN table. The one real problem I
see with OOB companies is that they can't respond to requests for expedited
coordination. Maybe there's a way to look up and weed out closed businesses.

No idea. They'd have to modify it to extend its bandwidth from 3.4-3.6 to

Re: [WISPA] 3650

2007-11-16 Thread Dylan Oliver
All of the experimental licenses I reviewed specified Aperto PacketWave
(most) or Redline's AN-100. Though Ubiquiti has a card for 3650, you won't
be able to use it until it is certified. The FCC isn't joking; they say as
much in *BOLD* letters:

*Applications for nationwide, non-exclusive licenses may be filed now and*
> *licensees may file station registrations for restricted equipment.*

Re: [WISPA] 3650

2007-11-16 Thread Dylan Oliver
The only thing the OET equipment search certifies is that the OET equipment
search is just as BROKEN as the rest of the FCC's data reporting facilities.

When you come to analyzing database extracts of transmitter locations for
3650 (or whatever), beware that the 'counts' file is off because the FCC
doesn't strip linefeeds from e.g. address records, which screws up all bulk
import tools as well as their own counting script. Presumably the counts are
correct in Sybase, their native database system.

Oh, and one out of 30 or so tables in the l_micro extract is tab-delimited
rather than pipe-delimited. Surprise!

Re: [WISPA] 3650 PtMP vs. 2.4 PtMP

2007-11-19 Thread Dylan Oliver
Reading Covad's narrative rationale for their license, it sounded to me like
they were offering limited commercial service on a limited,
clearly-labeled-as-experimental basis:

"The use of limited market studies will permit
equipment testing (like other markets) as well as deployment of limited
subscriber
equipment to understand market requirements as well as technological issues
associated
with this spectrum. Covad hereby agrees to comply with the provisions of
Section 5.93
in conducting its limited market study. In particular, Covad will: (a) own
all of the
transmitting and/or receiving equipment; and (b) be responsible for
informing anyone
participating in the experiment that the service is granted under an
experimental
authorization and is strictly temporary."

Here's Section 5.93:
http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=c8dac1967310be65aa88f8d1956f1241&rgn=div8&view=text&node=47:1.0.1.1.6.2.237.22&idno=47
(sorry for the long link; TinyURL isn't working)

Their "limited deployment" consisted of 16 Aperto Packetwave base stations
and
200 subscriber units with authorization to operate at 20+ locations
across many markets:

Freshbooks is fantastic for service invoicing. It handles recurring billing
with supporting payment gateways, and also gives you the option to send
paper invoices (monthly, automatically!) for a little more than a dollar.

Roger Coude just announced Linux-friendly 8.6.0 this morning. It's worked
under WINE for a while now, but only after messing with .dlls. Here's his
announcement:

After intensive modifications in the program, it is now possible to run
Radio Mobile in a Linux-Wine environment and obtain almost the same
performance as in Windows.
The changes also benefit Windows user because the drawing speed has
increased, and the picture limit size jumped from 2000 to 5000 pixels.
Unfortunalely, due to the modifications done to rmwdlx32.dll, update
will have to be completed manually otherwise you will get a dll error
(file rmcore.zip in the download page).
To install under Linux, get the latest version of Wine, and run the
Microsoft VBruntime installer.
No more tricks with native dlls! The program just run fine with Wine
built-in librairies!
Note that all download from internet are doing fine at my home
connexion (I use Kubuntu). Still to be tested behind a proxy...
I have unlocked the map pixel size to 1 pixels for test purpose,
but I do not garantee anything above 2000.
Have fun!
Roger

Glad we can be friends again! There is a 'server' edition for Ubuntu:

"If the vote goes according to Mr. Martin's plan, and the telecommunications companies find themselves free of the requirement that they open their broadband networks to competitors, it could have an immediate effect on ISPs such as America Online and EarthLink. Re: [WISPA] 5.8GHz vs Leaves

2005-08-04 Thread Dylan Oliver
Please see the thread "Foliage Penetration" (was Trango vs. Canopy or some-such).

Here's what Matt Liotta said:

We have found 5.8Ghz OFDM gear better than 900Mhz when
it comes to NLOS links through foliage. We attribute this to a few
things. First, the noise floor at 900Mhz is higher than 5.8Ghz due
mostly to paging services. Second, Fresnel effects are a real problem
for low antennas at 900Mhz. Finally, OFDM is simply better able to deal
with multi-path interference. If you haven't had a chance to try
equipment from Orthogon Systems then I would suggest you see for yourself. In regard to power at 900Mhz vs. 5.8Ghz, check your FCC regulations.5.8Ghz point-to-point links allow for the use of any antenna gain you desire assuming you have limited transmit power to 1W.
---

After much misinterpretation, Matt clarified that he believed Orthogon
Systems succeeded not by penetrating leaves, but by using multipath
reflections *around* them.

[WISPA] MotoWi4

2005-09-06 Thread Dylan Oliver
Hi,

I read Motorola's recent announcement of the MotoWi4 platform for
802.16e with interest. I found it even MORE interesting that they've
backdated this announcement - which came out the other day - to July
25. If intentional, this move would seem to supercede their previous
announcement to build 802.16d updates for the Canopy Advantage
platform. That's alright and all, but it does seem a little tricky to
rewrite history ("Motorola recently announced a major joint technology
development
agreement with Sprint for wireless broadband WiMAX 802.16e technology
testing and equipment trials." - no, they announced trials for
802.16*d*).
Mostly, I'd just like to know where they're going, and if the Canopy
Advantage will really be all that - or if it will fall flat on its face
as the "redheaded stepchild of Motorola", as someone suggested at
WiNOG, in deference to MotoWi4.

Anybody got a clue?-- Dylan OliverPrimaverity, LLC
