Re: [WISPA] 120* Sectors
I would change to either of these antennas : Part No: SAH24-16-G Item Description: 16dBi 95Deg HPOL Sector Antenna, N Female Connector, Single Bracket Price: $209.95 We have several of these deployed and are easily getting 120deg of coverage out of them even though their rated for 95deg. Also - You will see a night and day difference on your current links and may actually bump several of them to 5.5mbps from 1mbps. Also Brian - You are running 15dBi CPEs at these locations - I've suggested multiple times that you upgrade the CPEs to 19dBi units. Goto the higher gain sectors and then see what you are working with. If you really wanna give your sectors a kick in the arse - Go with something like this - http://www.teletronics.com/antenna2-422dBidirectional.html Going with this 22dBi Sector will definitely push most of your links into 5.5mbps. Contact Roger Peters - [EMAIL PROTECTED] or give him a shout at 210-601-7727. He's got the best pricing on pacwireless antennas and he also sells Teletronics antennas / amps / radios. So what is my problems? High pings and timeouts. Only when traffic is high. Or maybe my 600k upload is maxed out and everything is stacking up. One thing I do know is I hooked up subs I shouldn't have. I am looking for advice on antennas. Take my word also - We fought our 900mhz links for weeks until we moved 36inches away from the tower - even at 30inches you'll be kickin yerself in the arse. [WISPA] Use of WISPA logo
Are we all able to use the WISPA logo like this ? http://www.kywifi.com/images/vptower/CIMG5548.jpg Also - came across this post on tower talk , figured we all may be able to learn a little bit about house cleaning from this. Who is Bob Smith ? *Bob Smith Wrote* HI All, I'm a wireless network consultant in my 'other life' and thought you all might get a real charge out of seeing what some people call a 'commercial tower install' The tower in the pictures is used by a TV translator system , but a new WISP in Ky. is thinking of putting up a system on the tower also. He is experiencing a whole lot of electrical noise when he mounts his antennas on the tower, but he can hold them in his hand, not mounted, and the noise goes away. So now he's thinking of wrapping the mounts with electrical tape to insulate them from the tower and install his equipment. (Good electrical practice?) My comment to him was "tie a cable to his bumper and to the tower and drive away from the tower, this way he would be doing both the tower owner and himself a favor". No kidding aside, as you can see in the pictures (#13 - #27) the tower is a mess. http://www.kywifi.com/images/vptower/index.php Gawd, ham's get hassled in California for a 30' tower, and in Ky. you can just put of anything, anyway and use it ,, Go figure. The only reason I asked this and think it's funny - *no offense intended* is b/c one of my techs did an install like this - Apparently when the tower got struck by lightning - the enclosure exploded due to the discharge ring on the supressor inside of the box... Re: [WISPA] Terms and Contracts
Is this a residential customer ? Is it worth the bad advertising on your part to pursue it ? What were their reasons for cancelling ? We don't even have a contract in place any longer. We have a TOS and an acceptable use policy in place but no need to waste our time with the extra paperwork for useless contracts. If you provide a high level of service and treat your customers right, why would they leave ? If it's for price - tell them good luck - Chances are they will be back if they are "service" oriented and not "price" driven. Re: [WISPA] VoIP/PBX Gateway appliance
Ok - #1 - This customer has had the same phone # at this location for 20+ years - They do over 17million per year in volume out of this location. It's a fuel dock. They rely heavily on inbound calls for generating this. #2 - The customer will not change their phone # - This is NOT an option #3 - This company does a total of 90+ million / year in revenue and as their internet provider - I will not chance losing their accounts. #4 - I think it's absolutely stupid and a waste of time for them to have to dial 337-774- to be able to call the same number by dialing 774-. I know that this can be worked around with the dialing features. I have no issues with an asterisk solution - I have the equipment on-hand and am currently working with Butch Evans to get this setup. At this point in time - The only thing I can do is to bring in POTS lines to make this work so we can terminate their phone #s at our office. I am looking for an out of the box appliance that will do this as well. I have other clients wanting to come onboard for the hosted PBX aspects and VoIP advantages also. I appreciate Rick for what he does - with that being said - I do not feel there was anything wrong with Alex's post. I for one would like to hear everyone's opinion on the topic before u "nipping" this one Matt. Below you stated YOUR opinion. You also kinda went to extremes by bringing up Amway What Alex has brought up could be a huge $$ generator and a good fit for some WISPs/ISPs. Alex never went into graphic details only generalizations. I will admit, I wasn’t in the best mood when I read it. Knowing that this list is publicly monitored, I really did not feel it was the proper place to discuss hosting pornography and describing how profitable it could be. I try to be pretty liberal in my moderation duties, but I felt this one stepped over the line. Several of you feel I was in error. Possibly. I have received a few complaints about my decision. This decision to moderate in no way harbored ill thoughts towards Alex Huppenthal. I would have responded the same way on that thread for any poster. I am disappointed he took my action so deeply to heart. Normally, I would not let a few complaints bother me, but in this case I am choosing to respond. We charge more then the competition and we do so for a reason. Our installs start at $250 for a 'basic' install. Our monthly rates are atleast $10-$15/more then the DSL or Cable offerings in our area. We avoid the bottom feeders this way. We could double or triple our subscriber count within 12mos if we would drop down $15/mo for our service but I refuse to do that. "Volume" of low end subscribers becomes a very costly support decision. I refuse to compete on pricing - we are local - we hire local people - we donate and support the local sports teams / associations. We shake our subscribers hands in the stores / at gas pumps / baseball games. We pump $$ into the local business's for our supplies, materials. $24.95/mo - If I were you - I would SERIOUSLY rethink your business model. Oh - we also don't have contracts - We do have a TOS, but have found there is really no reason to get subscribers to committ. If we do our job - they will stay - if we fail to support them as we've promised - they will bail. Kinda helps keep us on our toes :) JohnnyO -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Pete Davis Sent: Friday, April 07, 2006 6:50 AM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] Re: CPE Cost Ideas Needed Joshua M. If you put up a $300 AP and 5 $150 CPE, you will be doing better ($220 average customer equipment cost) than a purely Waverider network. You should be able to do better than 5 clients per AP. Yes my website needs work, but we always have more installs that we possibly have time to get to. When we get caught up on installs, we will revamp the website to bring more in. I wouldn't count on giving 1.5M to every customer on your network over Waverider. I have played with every GOS setting I can come up with, and cannot MAINTAIN over 1Mbps connectivity to multiple clients. I would also consider the thought that you don't have to be the cheapest ISP in town to be the busiest or the best.. Its gonna take a LOT more $25/mo clients to get traction than at $40 or $50/mo. I wouldn't install any customer who will take 12 months to get CFP (cash flow positive, paying for CPE and installation costs). Not starting out, anyway, unless I was DESPERATE to get market share. Desperation is almost never a good position to be in. I get $39/mo for residential service and $59/$99 for business service. DSL is cheaper, and in one area, Cablemodem is cheaper. We still stay busy with new customers, and we don't put in a new tower until the last tower is CFP. More money coming in the door than going out is a big part (only part?) for successful business. ISP business is no exception. Sometimes, when we 'recycle' a radio, we even make money on an install, but we don't plan on it. The labor part of the install is covered by the first month or so's fees.We allow self install if the customer buys his own equipment. No setup charges for self install but unit must be approved prior to install and must meet our snr requirements. We no longer try to compete head-to-head with the cable or telephone companies. They can have the $15 per month bottom feeders. There is way too much churn in those markets for us.Another thing that helps us is that we are more than an ISP. We are a full service computer shop as well. When our customer calls in with a problem, and the radio gear checks out, we don't pass them off as a problem in your computer, we hand the call to our computer tech who can usually diagnose the problem over the phone. If we go out and the problem is in the computer, not our radio equipment, we waive the service call charge if the customer has our shop fix the computer, and we will pick it up for free since we are there. We credit a new customers first months service charge as a discount to the referring customer. We started out getting 4-5 calls a month for new service. We now get 5-7 a WEEK. All word of mouth. Make friends with the real estate agents. Give them flyers to give to their clients. We're seeing 1.5mbps / 220kbps pretty consistently. We've been able to run VPNs and terminal services over it reliably. Latency is consistent around 500ms-700ms. Much better then DirecWay. How much are we making off of it ? Well - Not much at all from the "service" but we're selling an SLA to the oilfield companies that we service with these systems. Our mark-up is approx 5x-7x what the monthly service costs us but we'll have someone on-site within 6hours if something goes south. I agree with the other two posts by Jack and JohnnyO. They are nifty devices. I use the FD4070 Belkins (think that's the model). But, I don't really think using these in commercial applications is a good idea. I have had problems with having to reset both devices (primarily on the uplink end). If you're not there to reset (unplug/plug) them, it is a huge pain. Saves $ but makes you look bad. Plus, the links are generally only a meg or two with marginal links (maybe less). I tried to use them at home, to share internet with my neighbor, and had issues about once a week, requiring a reset. I'm in a tri-plex and there is one unit between us. Link quality depended on what jack I used. The best link was about 3.5Mbps (per the SNMP tool). You probably can do more with the unused wire you mentioned. But, how much irritation/distrust will it incur when you have to walk the customer through these issues over the phone. Good thing is, it's easy to explain how to unplug and plug the device in over the phone. :-) Still, they're best as cheap solutions for homes and tight-fisted lawyers. You don't need "the big ass Hammer"! Just pour a little water on the ground, push the rod in, pull it out, fill the hole with water, push it in again. Repeat this process until you get the rod in almost all the way in and hammer it the last few inches. Works like a charm. And you already have water bottles in stock :) I never would have believed it until I saw it done! The water softens the ground and works as a lubricant. Its really slick. That study looks to be horribly methodologically flawed. (It's at http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Broadband_trends2006.pdf if you're interested.) Their survey required the responders to know what they were talking about -- if you have DSL, but a wireless router/access point, and you're not all that technically competent, you may well say your laptop has "wireless" Internet access when that's not quite what they intended. Here's the question they asked: > Does the computer you use at home connect to the internet through a > dial-up telephone line, or do you have some other type of connection, > such as a DSL-enabled phone line, a cable TV modem, a wireless > connection, or a T-1 or fiber optic connection? That question gives me a headache, and I'd like to think I do know what I'm talking about most of the time. Note that their survey only had about 1500 Internet-using responders, which is jst barely enough to be considered a statistically valid sample for a population of a couple hundred million. (Their methodology is a bit vague on whether they're sampling all Americans, or just adults, or...) Don't get me wrong; it's an exciting quote. I just hope everyone takes it with the proper perspective, and realizes that it's probably "high" by some unknowable order of magnitude. *snip* If someone gives refunds, thats a plus that shows they add value. But not giving refunds does not infer wrong doing. *snip* Tom - it is wrong doing when you ban someone for requesting a refund. Hell, I've never bought from Hyperlink and from seeing their "ban" policy with a few of the posts on here, we'll never do business with them in the future. Nor am I defending Hyperlinktech, as we don't have enough business experience with them, to have a valid opinion. but... This isn't retail HomeDepot that we are talking about, this is distribution. In my 10 years experience previously in the distribution business, I can tell you there are not many companies that give "refunds." We also found that the companies that couldn't understand why "refunds" was bad business for distributors, usually were the ones that didn't do enough volume to matter wether we lost them. I'm not saying that I personally do not believe in giving refunds. I also believe its best practice to take care of the customer, in most cases. But that does not change the fact that most dealers do NOT give refunds. >Tessco, Talley. Hutton, Electrocomm. They may give refunds, but there significant hassle in getting it, that in most cases will be more costly to the buyer in time than the value of the refund. They also usually charge a higher profit margin on every sale than the smaller distributor that is competing on price, and therefore has more margin to justify eating the cost to give the refund. I bet the price received from Hyperlinktech was significantly less than that the Tesscos or Hutton's would have charged? When price drops, terms gets tougher. A distributor must determine which business they want to be in, and they can't be in both successfully. If in the price market they need to have price policies. Descretion needs to be taken out of the set policies, otherwise its impossible to manage RMA processes. There are many reasons strict policies need to be inforced for Refunds 1. Price constantly falls based on time. And even a week or s odone the road the cost of the product may have dropped. 2. People find something cheaper after the fact. 3. Sales people may have already been paid commissions. 4. If special order product, the vendor ends up getting stuck with the full cost of the product sitting in inventory for a long time, while price drops by the time someone wants the product. Guaranteed to sell the product at a loss as well as tie up cash flow. 5. People often irreputably return other vendor's products. Company 1 has stock and can ship today. Company 2 has lower cost. Company 1 product gets installed. Company 2 product when arrives gets sent back to company 1 for refund. Buyer actually makes a profit on the deal, getting a higher dollar refunded than he paid for the gear from company 2. You'd be surprised how often this happened. Sometimes even involving invoice forging and swapping serial number stickers. 6. The easy way to keep EVERYONE happy, is instead to just offer credits or replacements. It keeps everyone honest. If the buyer is really going to be a repeat customer, its just a matter of time before he has another order that he can apply the credit to. This is standard distribution policies. There are some exceptions. If the buyer bought a product that the vendor normally keeps in stock and sells a lot of, and its a product that the buyer will likely never need again, and the buyer didn't cause big inconvenience demanding immediate shipment of product for a rush order. On these cases, vendors almost always will give the refund, even if against standard policies. But there is no way you can say standard distribution policy is to give refunds. Just about every term sheet from anybody specifically says "NO REFUNDS, ALL SALES ARE FINAL". Thats jsut the reality. Unless specifically discussed otherwise in advance of shipment. If someone gives refunds, thats a plus that shows they add value. But not giving refunds does not infer wrong doing. Just my opinion. Sure do - We credit ALL of our customers without them having to ask for any downtime over 12hours they experience on our system. If someone is not happy with our service and ask for a refund for their installation, we just give it to them, pick up our equipment and leave smiling. How about you Rudolph ? How do you treat your customer base ? None of our customers are due to advertisement, they are referrals by word of mouth. How stupid would it be to give someone a hard time over a few dollars when our business is driven by word of mouth advertising ? Lonnie - my experiences and my opinions of Canadian companies are that of my own. Apparently you're looking to make an ass out of both you and I or else you wouldn't have responded the way you did Slander - not even close. I KNOW DragonWave Harvested this list - Just like Tranzeo has harvested this list as well in the past...and so has Trango ... They are Canadian Companies who are spamming from the list addresses as of late. Should I expect some email from StarOS anytime soon ? I won't continue this any further and if I offended you by asking the list if the pricks at DragonWave (my opinion solely) are spamming others as well, my appologies. If you don't accept my appology, you leave me no other choice then to plea temporary insanity and appologize for my verbal offense which I did not realize I committed nor was I aware of any such actions and any future repetition of the above said that I may not be aware of. FON, which aims to create a network of home users and small businesses to resell wireless access to passersby, said on Sunday it will subsidize $60 Cisco (CSCO) Linksys or Buffalo routers for $5 in the United States or 5 euros in Europe. Routers are small boxes users connect to cable or telephone Internet connections to broadcast wireless signals to nearby devices, inside a home, business or surrounding neighborhood. Juergen Urbanski, North American general manager, said FON, which in February raised $21.7 million from backers, including the founders of Google (GOOG) and Skype, is looking to turn the brand-name equipment into what it calls "social routers." The goal of the Madrid-based company is to build block-by-block networks of shared wireless connections around the globe, turning local Wi-Fi users into an army of "foneros" — its term for people who share wireless access. As the company's name implies, FON aims to provide wireless Internet access not just to computer users but also for mobile phones and the latest portable gaming devices as they roam

That equates to about 24kbps per user.1,000 users * 24kbps = 24,000kbps / 1024 = 23Mbps (or about 1/2 of a T3) for 1,000 users. 2,000 users would be about 45Mbps.Does my math work? Why should the burden of providing high-speed Internet to people in underserved (typically rural) areas fall on the shoulders of taxpayers? I don't want my taxes to pay to expand your network or for Joe User to get your service. If people want services, they should live in a city. If they want to live in rural areas, they should do so with the understanding that services (water, sewer, EMS, schools, cable, high-speed Internet, just about anything and everything) are harder to come by and sometimes more expensive. No one makes people live in the country. People choose to on their own, and they should take responsibility for the costs and/or lack of services associated with that decision. Just my own 2 cents. [WISPA] Tower contract / Revenue Share / Discounted Services
Title: Tower contract / Revenue Share / Discounted Services Have a company that is paying us to install a tower at their location so we they can receive our internet services. What we negotiated was - they pay for ALL costs including backhaul, 3 2.4ghz sectors, tower costs / installation costs. We get exclusive rights to the tower. They get 20% revenue share from any customers being served directly off of the tower, and they receive 50% off of their monthly service fees. Does anyone have a contract that would cover part or all of what was stated ? RE: [WISPA] Midland, TX
Matt - don't quote me on this but we were in Midland, Tx about 4 months ago and I saw plenty of gear hanging. Not sure who it is, but someone out there is playing with wireless. IF you want to do something in Midland/Odessa area, I have SEVERAL tower sites there available to you. Sounds about like NStreme Turbo (40MHz channel) or Alvarion B100 (40MHz channel). Considering this thread was originally about the RB532 and its shortcomings, has anyone tried loading MikroTik OS onto the StarOS 533MHz hardware? *Lonnie is famous for hijacking threads to promote his products.
