I agree, splitting makes for confusion
searching and remembering what's due to arrive...They get around faster
than they did IMHO now than they did under the email bidding system.
Plus it sort of puts a virtual wall across the world, it's
friendlier when you don't know where you are sending next..And its only
a few dollars more after all! Or are we only in it for the money?
LOL.

Whatever you guys wish, I suppose. But part of the vine system we

will make that end more confusing.
  Whatever...

Efficiency (WAS 1970-11-14 early and late LIST)

I think at this point all we can do is
learn how to things differently in the future.

As a possible model for future vines of
this sort: When I receive the vine, I could burn two (2) sets, and
then send one to the next EU\UK recipient and one to the next US
recipient. And we just send them in the order listed disregarding
those not in the country the vine is traveling in.
i.e. those in the US disregard all
EU\UK recipients, and those in the latter afore mentioned disregard
all US recipients.

MR. SKULL

  Well...
I'm not one to complicate things and, tho I can see some of
the efficiencies mentioned in this thread regarding vines crossing
the pond, I think having two branches for every vine will end up
complicating the system. My opinion is that a single vine is
easier to track, and easier to search. I guess I'd rather see
single vines where an occasional shuffling of names occurs (with
the agreement of the participants, of course).
As this vine is already enroute to Europe, it does make a bit
of sense to have it make the rounds a bit there. The vinage as
  posted lately is:

Well, the obvious has been done - correct track separation. Now I have to
find a City of Tiny Lights with a similar sound and solo (shouldn't be too
tough; FZ played that "Aint Necessarily So" solo several times). Once that track
is repaired, I'll be looking to do the same with "Illinois Enema Bandit" - tho a
comparable solo there will not be as easy to hunt down.
Correct those two tracks and I should be able to do something about the
upper and lower level 'munge' that's blocking out some good middle range stuff.
At least, I think I can...

I think at this point all we
can do is learn how to things differently in the
future.

As a possible model for
future vines of this sort: When I receive the vine, I could burn two (2)
sets, and then send one to the next EU\UK recipient and one to the next
US recipient. And we just send them in the order listed disregarding
those not in the country the vine is traveling in.
i.e. those in the US

  Well...
I'm not one to complicate things and, tho I can see some of the
efficiencies mentioned in this thread regarding vines crossing the
pond, I think having two branches for every vine will end up
complicating the system. My opinion is that a single vine is easier to
track, and easier to search. I guess I'd rather see single vines where
an occasional shuffling of names occurs (with the agreement of the
  participants, of course).
As this vine is already enroute to Europe, it does make a bit of
sense to have it make the rounds a bit there. The vinage as posted
  lately is:

This is merely a suggestion; it's really something the vine

2005-06-28 Thread SOFA

Hey Guy!
The fact that you attended the show in question could go a long way to
solving a major FZ mystery (or not). There were two dates at the Fillmore that
weekend: the 13th & the 14th - according to sources much more knowledgeable
than me.
At one of the shows, Joni Mitchell appeared; at the other one, Grace Slick
was onstage...
The show(s) circulating at present are the ones where Grace appeared. The
other evening is not in circulation. There seems to be a bit of confusion
regarding the date of the show that is circulating. Tho' many call it the 13th,
many other sources refer to it as the 14th.
Do you remember anything of this show? Do you have ticket stubs from this
show?
If there's a chance to lock down the true date of this show, it would go a
long way in clearing up a bit of an FZ mystery.
What about it? Can you recall anything from way back when?
Regards,
SOFA

If this vine actually makes it to me (some have, some
haven't),I will attempt to post scans of the program booklet (which I've
been holding onto all these years) from this Fillmore East show (11/13/70

There are lots of nice audio editing suites out there John; I happen to use
Soundforge 4.5. This is an old program that was given to me a long time ago...
They have since upgraded to a 6 or better? Anyway, Sonic Foundry, who make it,
have their shit together afa I'm concerned.
Editing programs can be costly; I'd find someone with a Soundforge program
who'd be willing to share with you - as I did. I like Soundforge because of it's
ease. I had no manual, or instructions with it and I could operate it
immediately (and I am like supremely stupid with techie things).
CoolEdit is another program that's kinda popular...
I bet JimL could quote a raft of options.
For my money - or complete lack thereof - it's Soundforge.

[Zappa-List] Mental CT Hygiene Delemma

2005-06-27 Thread SOFA

Hey Kids!
I think I'd like some opinions, if you'd be so kind.
Thanks to brother Bart, in Poland, I have sought out the recording of  801130, Des Moines, IA - billed as "The sickest songlist you've ever seen". It's a B-
audience recording (and IMO that B- is kind; I'd rate it a C-). I intend to
start a vine of this show...
Now I intend to rip this to my machine, and tweeze it for my own enjoyment.
I believe that I can improve upon the overall quality; tho there are limits to
what you can do, of course (a polished turd is still a turd - FZ). My question
to all of you out there: would you rather have a copy warts and all, or would
you rather have a SOFA tweezed copy?
PLEASE! Don't bother to respond to this with "I want a copy when it's
ready" - that is NOT part of the conversation right now. I wanna know if the
collectors out there would rather mess with it themselves (if they mess with it
at all), or listen to a "pure" artifact. I'd also love to know if a cleaner copy
of this show exists, but I kinda doubt it.
For example: the Illinois Enema Bandit encore on my copies does not include
Sweet Lelani - it cuts off just as the solo starts to roll. And - I think - it's
Pick Me I'm Clean that has a nasty warble, until the song finally just cuts out.
I would replace these with (god forbid) tracks from around the same time... I
wanna seriously mess with this mofo; because right now, I find it damn near
unlistenable. But that's me. I really wanna know what you guys think. Because I
will gladly pass on this turd as it sits...
Let the debate begin...
Regards,
SOFA

Lee,
At the yahoo groups Zappa_List page, there's a FAQ in the
files section that explains vining and how to participate, and what is expected
of the participants; check it out.
Normally, you'd respond to the LATEST vine message by simply
typing " your name-country << " after the last name on the list. It
couldn't be easier!

Nick,
You may want to recheck the messages at the yahoo groups

correctly, but to an earlier message I'm afraid). I could be wrong
tho...

Re: [Zappa-List] Re: GTOs Vine

2005-06-25 Thread SOFA

The GTO's (Girls Together Outrageously) we're the 'groupies' in a sense for
the MOI.
When FZ moved into the original Log Cabin, there were some hippies
squatting there: Carl Franzoni, and a couple of the girls that would become the
GTO's. Frank did not evict them, but rather let them crash around the place -
the house was huge, with small grottos dotting the back 40; plenty of space for
everyone. Carl and the Girls would go to the early MOI shows and provide
"interpretive" dance for the music. Pretty soon the 'girl' section grew to
include 8 - 10 dancers. In exchange for their board, the girls would help Gail
out around the house, and baby-sit Moon. A couple of the girls fancied
themselves as "poets" and the girls would often regale Frank with their
interpretive song and dance. Finally Frank said, "You girls should record an
album".
The GTO's were officially born.
If you ever get the chance, read "I'm with the Band" by Pamela (Miller)
DeBarres, for an interesting look at this period of Frank's life.

No problem SOFA, all software is
on the disc everything is on board one disc Even the printing software
  !

Its not rocket science to suss
  either!

  The reason behind compression is
logical in sofar you can get more on one disc and with it been in DATA Format
you can load artwork and software too

One of the best reasons though is
burning parameters each individual will burn his or her own audio disc at
the speed they want to,(after converting the data files to Wav(High quality
Stereo music Files)  this won't introduce glitches and clicks when copying Audio only
  discs

Re: [Zappa-List] RE: Vine Open 1970-11-14? early and late Fillmore East-NYC+10-29-74

2005-06-23 Thread SOFA

Just add your name to the list, Bro... You need to contact the person in
front of you; the person behind you should be contacting you. The messages are
archived at the site, and are searchable. But you can always keep the email if
you wish. Lists are not included with these vines (normally) because there is no
need...
SOFA
Quick
question.. this will be the first time I've gotten in on a vine since the
new method of joining in and knowing who it was going to next was
introduced. Will the disc be mailed out with the list of people who it's
going on to next, or should we just make a point to hang on to the e-mail
with all the names in it (like this one)? Thanks in
  advance.--Milhouse

Re: [Zappa-List] NEW JEFF SIMMONS + ZAPPED VINE

2005-06-21 Thread SOFA

Read the FAQ in the files section, Tom...
Basically a vine is a way we share music. Some one offers up a recording,
and a list is created. The recording gets mailed to each member in turn; they
make a copy for themselves, and pass the originals on to the next one on the
list.

Yes, Bart, this is Simmons' solo album, plus a WB "Loss Leader" compilation

2005-06-19 Thread SOFA

I guess I answered that then. The Barcelona you sent me plays on my
machine, but not on my DVD player... But then, I spend no time in the TV room
(outside of football season), and much time in my computer room. So I guess
either format works for me (tho' watching it on a larger screen would be nice,
simply watching it is the desired goal).
This little episode has shown me just how "illiterate" I've become in the
digital video realm; I don't know Jack (couldn't tell ya the difference between
DVD and VCD).

Re: [Zappa-List] The Grandmothers on tour

2005-06-10 Thread SOFA

I've seen them - tho' it's been about 5 years...
Photo's depend as much on the venue as they do the band. I saw them at an
outdoor festival and cameras were not a problem. Your safest bet is to contact
the venue where you will see them, and ask. And they had a merch table when I
saw them: CD's, T-shirts, tour books - the typical fare. They were all quite
nice about posing for pics and signing autographs.
I'd be cautious about chatting up Frank with any of them - especially Don
Preston; he doesn't have much nice to say and the topic seems to rile him a
bit.
Have fun. It'll be a good show, I'm sure.
SOFA

   I'm sure many of
you all know that The Grandmothers are doing 4 USconcerts. If so,
doesanyone know if they allow audience members to snap pictures? Do
theysell any merchandise at their shows? Any info on this would

Dawayne,
I've heard a bit of the Muffin Men (and have their Mulm release) and I can
recommend them quite highly. If you've never heard any P/O, then you haven't
heard the best - IMO. Andre is truly a wonderful, gentle human being and he has
the band crackling with inspiration...
I've never heard any of the Zappanale CD's either, but from others it
appears #13 was the best.
I've
never heard any of the Muffin Men or Project/Object or Zappanale

Danny,
Tho' thrilled that you are torrenting, I'd like you to NOT post
torrent addresses here. You may gladly announce when you've uploaded something;
the folks that do torrents will be able to find it on their own. I have a couple
of reasons for suggesting this, but primarily the questionable legalities of
file sharing makes me prefer that the actual http addy does not appear on these
pages. I hope you understand.

Hi, I'm new to this list - your patience is appreciated ... if I
understand correctly, I can get a copy of this if I make and distribute another
five copies ... sorry to be a bum - I'm tres busy, sleep-deprived and ... slow
... didn't find the FAQ - probably was under my nose ...

Anyway, I'm really interested in any kind of Zappa stuff - does VO in
subject line mean video ? ... thanx, any info iZ appreciated - sorry if this is
an intrusion ...
cheers ... jc
***Welcome to the List jc; you didn't miss the FAQ, we're just not that
evolved yet...
"VO" means 'Vine Offer'. If this were a video, or DVD, it would say so in
the subject line. To get in on a vine, you simply respond to the vine message by
adding your name to it - as I have done for you above (I guessed you're from the
US; you may correct this if it's wrong). Once you receive the disks, you copy
them for yourself, and mail the originals on to the person after you in
line; there's no need to send 5 copies, unless a particular vine calls for that,
which would be extremely rare.
I hope this clears it up for you...
Regards,
SOFA

theBIGnote, thanks to your article ; )
Are you aware of any site that does? The only confirmation I've found is
yours, and an interview "Twister" gave.
But that's no big deal, really. I personally verified a show for Ulrich,
and it happens all the time. The problem they deal with is the documentation;
they tend to want a little more than "I remember when". Naurin goes for the
taped evidence, Ulrich will accept a program, or press announcement, ticket stub
or whatever. But, I have no doubt of the Wichita show, thanks to your, and
Craig's, testimony. We'll just have to wait for the 'tour list' folks to catch
up...
Ya know Dawayne, you really should contact Charles Ulrich about this
show... I've heard he's in the process of writing a book on FZ; with your
intimate knowledge, you might be a potential resource...

SOFA

Re: [Zappa-List] re: Vines - and how they "work"

is that a real poncho or is that a sears poncho?  but seriously
folks, from a somewhat technologically challenged guy how do these vines
work and how do i get in on them?todd

Hello Todd, usb (I think I want to talk with you directly soon), and any
other "newbies"
In a nutshell, here are how 'vines' "work":
Someone (maybe even you) has a recording that they would like to share with
the List community. They make a post to the list indicating such; in the subject
line they put "VO" (vine offer) and what they have to share (ex. 750427 Boston
early show, or Barcelona '88 DVD). Then, In the body of the message they put
their user name, real name, or email address, followed by a space and two arrows
(<<). That's it...
Someone (maybe even you) sees that message - either from a group email,
digest, or at the yahoo page - and desires that selection for their
collection; they respond to the message (changing nothing in the subject
line) by adding their name to the message (ex = firstguy-US
<<[EMAIL PROTECTED] <<). After they post their message, they
contact the person ahead of them in line privately with their snailmail info.
Then they wait for whatever it was that they wanted.
Oh yeah, they will, inturn, be contacted privately by the next person in
line. This might happen right away - or much later. Regardless, the member is
morally obligated to send the original disk(s) they received - after they have
made a copy for themselves - to whomever is next on the list.
This is called "sharing" the music and it is something that the List
promotes. Of course, private trades and B&P between members is also
acceptable and encouraged, but PLEASE keep your transactions off-list.
If you happen to want to trade for music, or if you do not have burning
capability and wish to explore B&P, check out the Files section for "member
trade lists"; there are several. If you have something to offer, post your list
there; or if you have something you'd like to share, start a vine. You'll love
it; it's a way of life...
Regards,
SOFA

Re: [Zappa-List] SOFA's Vine-Ology

Thank you for the kind offer YM (Barry).
Obviously, the method employed at the KUR Forms is a good one, or I
wouldn't have tried to emulate it. I think though (no offense, of course) that
I'd like to see this work out for the List in its present form, as we are a
community unto our own; sorta keeping the system "in house" rather than
expanding it to involve other web areas. I sure (hope?) you understand.
Warm regards!
SOFA
PS Nice wiki you're building, btw: http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php/Main_Page
Another
option would be to not have the progression of a vine posted via the list,
instead having a messageboard where it can be followed up. (SNIP) I could
set up a forum for this at thebignote.com, should the powers that be feel like
this is a viable option.Just a thought...YM (aka Barry, Lurker
  Extraordinaire)

  Subject: [Zappa-List] Vines, etc...
hi all,i'm a fairly new member of this.  the
only other lists i belong to are the Tom Waits and Randy Newman
ones.  being a "newbie" i'm not too sure how these vines work.
although i'm a newbie to this list i'm a long time FZ fan, owning most
of his lps, all the way from Were Only In It For The Money, Lumpy Gravy,
etc...  my cousin turned me on to FZ when i was probably 14 or so,
way back in the early 70s, i think it was the live white album.  it
was the first time i ever heard someone say fuck on a record, i was
immediately hooked.  i actually met Frank during my senior year
in high school (1975) while interning at the local progressive FM radio
station here in cincinnati.  Don't You Eat the Yellow Snow was
actually being played on the radio.  he was in town to do a concert at
the UC (University of Cincinnati) Fieldhouse and he dropped by WEBN to do
an interview with ginger sutton.  i got to sit in for the live
interview.  the reason i got to be there was because i had the most
complete collection of FZ albums, which they used for the info.  he
arrived in a limo, came upstairs for the interview and made ginger look
like a total idiot, because ginger obviously didn't know much about FZ.
it was hilarious.  i actually got to talk to him after the interview,
but became totally tongue tied, even though i had all kinds of stuff i
wanted to ask him, however i was able to ask him where i could find a copy
of Lumpy Gravy which was probably the only LP i couldn't find.  he
thought that was pretty cool and at the time i think that was probably the
album he was most proud of.well that's about it for now.  might
check in once in a while but glad to have found this discussion
