It looks very much like a Krakatoa rendering (or anything that can cope
with hundreds of millions of particles).

It's generally achieved by particle advection in a fluid sim (a very
viscous one in the case of the Robinsons ad).

The example here is advecting 40 million particles through emFluid4 and
then rendering via the open source KrakatoaSR bridge James Vecore put in
the wild a few years back.



As a general rule of thumb you need 40-50 million particles for a smooth
rendering at 1280p and you can times that by 4 for 1080p.

I've found a very similar methodology to working with Krakatoa PRT
partitions in Softimage by caching out in 10 million particle chunks
(duplicate setup with a different random seed) via 2015 SP2's built in
Alembic (far faster than Crate) which will export at an average of 10-15
seconds per frame for 40million particles. It's really important that your
using the fastest (and largest capacity) SSD drive/array possible. I use
HP's own G2 Turbo Drive's for my Z workstations, which are 4x the speed of
standard SSD's but any M.2 SSD array will work well (not quite as fast).
You'll also need a minimum of 32gb-64Gb ram in your workstation as large
emFluid4 sims eat ram for breakfast whilst simming (no different to any
fluid sim). I've found emFluid4 to be far easier to setup than emFluid5 for
this kind of thing,

The test sequence at 1280p rendered at approximately 20 seconds a frame
which is in the same ball park as doing it via PRT partitions with Krakatoa
in Max/Maya. Fury 2 is faster with smaller sims but once you go over 10-20
million particles the bottleneck is slow vRam in the GPU and things fall
apart very quickly.
