I'm guessing that Mandy will be the Big Bad in IM3. Everything in the two movies plus the tie-in materials has pointed to that, what with the Ten Rings being the terror cell which Shellhead continues to tangle with. (Blink and you'll miss it in IM2, but the individual who gives Vanko the fake passport and credentials is credited as "Ten Rings," so Mandy had a hand in that too.) I think that Thor set up the way which Mandy can work. Simply have his rings resemble the Asgardian technology we saw in Thor and have him explain that he recovered them from the valley like in the original story. Only in the flashback so that the ground was marked with the Bifrost symbols like in Thor. Perhaps Loki sent them down knowing that Mandy would get ahold of them. Maybe they were cast out of Asgard for being too dangerous. But the line in Thor about magic and science being one and the same, to me as an Iron Fan, just seemed to scream "Mandarin!" Plus it makes sense from a narrative standpoint. In IM, Tony fought Obadiah Stane, who engaged him as a businessman. In IM2, he fought Ivan Vanko, who engaged him as an engineer. So in IM3, he can fight Mandarin, who engages him as a "world shaper," a mover and shaker who can influence the world around him. And the parallels work: Obadiah was the worst of capitalism, seeking only power and control (rather than providing goods and services to make the world better), Ivan was only out to destroy (rather than create), and Mandarin would be out to dominate and enslave, rather than provide freedom and liberty. I have spent too much time thinking about this, being, as I have said, a huge Iron Fan. But I think you can make this work as a blowoff to the trilogy of Shellhead movies.
