[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Morning, A rather chilly week this week. Some rain but temperatures did break into the 60s now and then. Propagation was often not very good. I was met with a loud roar more than I heard signals this week. One sunspot was very active for the entire time it was visible. Even a glancing blow was enough to set off the ionosphere. But now that it has passed over the limb the conditions should improve. Please join us this afternoon and evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help) Sunday 2200z (Sunday 3 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz Stay well, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW glitch with KXPD3/keyer?
Steve, I had a problem that sounded a lot like yours - At Elecraft's suggestion, I sprayed my KXPD3 with De-oxit and the problem with missing initial dits totally disappeared. I did not hae to disassemble anything -- I just aimed and shot. A few days later, I noticed that there was *still* an occasional (random) delay (whether beginning with a dit or a dah) at the beginning of a transmission. I was operating at those times through a remote SGC autocoupler but had failed to BYPASS the internal KX3 ATU. Wayne suggested that my ATU was touching up the match automatically; trying to match my autocoupler. I went into the menu and bypassed the ATU - problem solved. There has been no reccurence of either of these issues since then. 73, Stan WB2LQF www.wb2lqf.com K1#2994K2# 6980K3#5244KX1 #2411 KX3#0325 K9#1 (Cocoa the Chihuahua) On Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 11:48 PM, Steve KC8QVO wrote: I have been running all CW so far with my KX3 and have noticed there is a delay a lot of times on dits. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500
I did not expect my additional comments on My KAT500 posting to appear on the Reflector; thought they would be private responses to private e-mails. Live and learn. I do disagree with marketing that raises demands without an ability to meet the demand for months or years. I think instant gratification is what drives Hamfests and much of hobby-buying; new toys are constantly coming on the market, and I think many of us expect to buy now what is advertised now. I understand others are willing to wait and track and graph KX3 shipments etc. This also raises expectations and increases demand; nothing to do with quality or technology. It drives sales. Owning and enjoying K/1, K2, K3, P/3, W2, and the KPA500 I admit to being an Elecraft fan and await the KAT500. Nevertheless, I do object to marketing what is not readily available and not providing regular updates on the status of those products delayed for whatever reason. I know the folks at Elecraft are busy; no one is THAT busy. 73 Ron KM4VX -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT500-tp7559586p7559622.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Speaker buzz fix with pictures
I actually tried tape at first and wasn't as happy with the results. Removing a bit of the case material seems to solve the root of the problem rather than just deal with the effects. Tim On Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 3:13 PM, Andrew Moore andrew.n...@gmail.com wrote: Another method: Painter's tape (the blue stuff) - a strip along the two horizontal seams to the left and right of the speaker (as it faces you) cured the buzz here - and also one strip on the bottom edge under the speaker. I applied it over the edges, folded it down on the inside and outside surfaces. No bending, no grinding or filing. Only downside is your KX3 looks like it's about to be painted. Actually, black vinyl tape would probably do better, and would blend in better with the case. Note - this method is done most easily by separating the cover halves, but as Ron mentioned, be careful with that ribbon connector when you unplug it. --Andrew, NV1B.. separate the covers (CAREFULLY.. as Ron mentions, that ribbon cable is fragile). On Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 3:42 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire r...@cobi.biz wrote: There's a way that does not involve any filing or grinding. I've found that the critical gap is the one at the bottom just below the speaker where vibration by the speaker can make the edge of the metal move back and forward, banging against the bottom cover. That is easily cured by separating the top and bottom (you'll have to unplug the flex cable and battery connector) and then, holding the top cover in your hands with the inside facing you, press your thumbs against the edge of the metal just below the speaker, bending it gently outwards. Repeat and check the fit with the top cover until you have a comfortable gap and a straight edge placed across the speaker lines up with the bottom cover on both sides. On mine, the gap was about 20 mils when the section of the top cover holding the speaker lined up with the bottom cover. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- --- Owner, worldwidedx.com AE6LX, Amateur Radio NNN0ITA, Navy MARS NNN0GAF FOUR, Southern CA Director Assistant for Training, Navy MARS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW glitch with KXPD3/keyer?
Thanks for the info, Stan. The antenna I was using all day yesterday was a Buddistick on 17 meters. I bypassed the tuner and had the SWR down to about 1.2-1.4:1. There was some fluctuation in the SWR outside of that, so I re-tuned the antenna a few times. The SWR changing was mostly from the lay of the counterpoise, but the feedpoint was set about 4 down in a bush (my support HI) so that affected it a little as well. Since the tuner was bypassed it wasn't trying to re-tune anything, but that doesn't mean the SWR was always good - I re-tuned the antenna a few times because of that. I will try cleaning the contacts and see where that gets me. I don't have any De-oxit but can get some in the next few days. I'll try the old paper abrasive method (someone once showed me that for cleaning my Vibroplex contacts - I use it for all my keys now). Re: [Elecraft] K2 and ICE 419 filter
The ICE 419 requires one line per band control. Neither the K2 nor K3 provide such an output. Automating any of the bandpass filters with K2/K3 require a band decoder of some kind - in the case of the K2 that means decoding frequency/band from the CAT interface. To my knowledge there are only two currently available band decoders that will connect to the CAT interface of the K2 and still provide for pass through of control data for a logging program - those being the Elecraft KRC-2 and the microHAM Station Master. The KRC-2 passively snoops on responses from the K2 to the logging program, whilst the Station Master provides an active (USB based) interface for the logger using microHAM's Router software. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] KX3 arrival
Quick update. Last night I was on 20m with the KX3. Operating the KX3 with my steppir three element, I worked Marshall islands on CW and Australia on SSB with 10W (2 times). The receiver sensitivity and selectivity are excellent to my ear. I love the roofing filter as it is as good as advertised. I am still getting used to the menu options for NR and NB and could not seem to get those to change settings but that I attribute to learning curve. The folks at Elecraft are going to sell a bunch more of these bad boys when the word gets out on the street on how great this portable rig works. My 857D didn't even come close to the receive capabilities of the KX3. Btw, i plan to bring this rig to HRO here in San Diego as the guys down there really want to see it. I was also doing A/B testing earlier between my K3 #1391 and the KX3 #845 and I was hearing various stations better on the KX3. Sure setting were not exactly the same but to have something comparable and at that size was blowing my mind. Of course it is a totally different form factor so regardless of performance comparison it is not a substitute but sure is nice having it in my arsenal. Thanks Elecraft!!! I haven't done exactly that, but it can certainly be done with a home brew cable that uses only pins 2, 3, and shield of the DB9 connector for the serial connection, breaks out pin 4 from the computer to send CW and pin 7 for PTT, and breaks out the Aux Bus to a KRC2. I've done all of that except the feed to the KRC2, which then controls the 419. See the manual for the KRC2 for details of wiring between the KRC2 and the K2. All you need are some good quality DB9s that you can solder to (some cheapies melt) and a suitable length of CAT5 or CAT6. Note that the official serial cable for the K2 was NOT twisted pair, which is a bad thing. Untwisted signal and control wiring is well known to be susceptible to RF pickup, and it caused my computer to shut down at power levels as low as 12W when using a long wire antenna ending in the shack. I solved the problem by replacing that original cable with CAT5. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

In that real world, parts often take a lot longer to obtain than when projected, parts vendors don't always ship what they promise, things don't fit on the circuit board, so it has to be re-designed, a new operational capability is requested which requires re-design, design engineers may have personal issues, or may get diverted to solving a problem with an existing product, and so on. Mike, there are no screenshots posted yet. The new RX/TX text display mode is only available on the external monitor when using the P3SVGA option. The P3 utility does not (yet) support capturing a screenshot of the external display. I do not know if there are plans to support this in the future. I would imagine that once this capability moves past beta to a general software release, there will be pictures posted on the website. This will be a major feature point for the sale of P3SVGA options, so I expect it will be featured on the product page. [Elecraft] Data decode (OT)
The new decode display feature now being implemented on the P3 parallels something I just ran across. 50 years ago the Navy had a unit designated the AN/UGA-3(XN-1) which took a 1000 Hz International Morse signal from a receiver and translated it to Baudot code so it could be printed by a standard Teletype machine. Accepted from 10 to 120 WPM Morse. It weighed over 100 pounds. No tubes but over 240 semiconductors. If curious there is a picture and link at http://www.navy-radio.com/morse.htm Shows how far we have come in making things smaller and lighter. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW glitch with KXPD3/keyer?
Yeah, I should have been a bit more descriptive. The method I was taught is to clamp a small piece of regular paper (notebook paper, printer paper, etc) between the contacts and pull on it. If you clamp too tight on the paper it will tear, but at just the right pressure you can pull the paper through and see the discoloration as the oxidation and any other build-up on the contacts wipes off. I have heard a pencil eraser can have similar results. Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 - low power 15m only FIXED
After white-wiring a burned trace to the collector of Q4, and resetting the bias current, it appears to be working on all bands. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW glitch with KXPD3/keyer?
I just tried it with computer paper and I captured some crud from my Navy Flameproof. And there was no oily mess to clean up either. Maybe you ought to send this one to QST Hints and Kinks. I've been a CW ham for over 50 years and never heard this one - or - somebody told me and I was out to lunch. Before discovering De-Oxit, I would periodically buy contact cleaner strips from various suppliers over the years. In fact just a couple years ago, Vibroplex even began to sell these strips. Now I can save some money to put toward another key ;) 73, Stan WB2LQF On Sun, Jul 22, 2012 at 2:43 PM, Steve KC8QVO wrote: Yeah, I should have been a bit more descriptive. Good to their word, the new K3 front panel arrived and I installed it (took me about three hours - some parts and board removal/replacement from the original front panel required). Unfortunately, there was no joy. The rig behaved exactly as before. Called support back and again did a little testing with them on the line. This time they said to return the rig. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] P3 v1.17
Ray, Q1. Are you seeing the decoded CW on the K3 VFO B display? If not, then the problem is in the K3 config. If so, then the problem is in the P3. Q2. when you updated the firmware in the P3, did you have the P3 utility send ALL the new files? You need P3M0117 and P3S0105 both, plus you should let it update the FPGA bin image files also. Q3. did you remember to turn on the SVGA data mode, in the SVGA menu (per the quick start guide)? I have seen it before on the reflector but can't find it and that is how to go back to a previous firmware release? I currently have 4.51 and want to go back to the one before this until the CW decode is fine tuned. I have the latest P3 firmware downloaded and working but the decode is not a sharp as it was in the previous firmware. It's ok in 4.51 but not close to that of the other firmware. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW glitch with KXPD3/keyer?
Steve, Ive had KXPD3 issues similar to those that you describe since I got my KX3 2 ½ months ago. Right out of the box I couldnt seem to adjust the paddles as tightly as I normally prefer. The adjustment screws have rather coarse threads and it seems like theres only about a quarter of a turn range between too tight and too loose, and when I first adjusted it the way I normally use paddles I would randomly get spontaneous contact which resulted in unwanted transmissions. I finally accepted the fact that Id have to settle for a more course adjustment and have now become accumstomed to that. At least that stopped the spontaneous dits. Ive also experienced random dropped dits, or sometimes a delayed response to trying to send a dit, which actually causes various sending errors depending upon the character Im trying to send. You know, with iambic keying if Im trying to interject a single dit between dahs and that dit fails, the result is a continuous string of dahs, etc., etc. I usually send at 25 -30 wpm. Ive never had a great fist, but some of my recent sending with the KXPD3 has been downright embarrassing. So Ive been doing a lot of apologizing and repeating during qsos. I discussed this with Wayne a few weeks ago and he suggested that I try cleaning the contacts. I took a close look under magnification and did find that there was a small ding on one of the brass contact cylinders right at the point where the screw tip makes contact (and it was the one on the dit side where all of my problems have occurred). I disassembled the KXPD3, and rotated the brass cylinder to get the dinged area away from the contact point. I also cleaned the contact areas with de-oxit as recommended by Wayne. The cleaning and adjustment seemed to solve the dropped dit problem (and I really think it was caused by the little ding rather than surface oxidation), but I continue to occasionally experience the delayed response thing. That is I hit the dit side of the paddle and there is a 1/3 or ½ second delay before it comes through. That, of course, breaks up my sending rhythm and results in more gibberish coming from my fist. I bought the KX3 for portable operation and certainly dont expect the KXPD3 to be anything like my Begali Magnetic Signature (which I believe would be an unreasonable expectation). As far as I'm concerned, the advantage of having the KXPD3 attached to the transceiver more than offsets the minor glitches I'm talking about, and I can live with them. But I would be a much happier camper if I could get to the bottom of this delayed response problem. Don, N5LZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Steve KC8QVO Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2012 9:49 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 - CW glitch with KXPD3/keyer? I have been running all CW so far with my KX3 and have noticed there is a delay a lot of times on dits. When calling CQ there is a hesitation when sending my call between the dits in the V (KC8QVO) that makes it sound like KC8QE UO or KC8QI AO. The first few times it happened I thought I just wasn't used to the key, but it happens too much to be the key. My speed is set to 18wpm in iambic B mode. Has anyone else noticed a similar characteristic? Or am I just crazy? Are there any tricks to a fix? Another potential glitch is with the memory keyer. I normally send my code farnsworth method and space out my letters. When I do that on the memory keyer recording it blends everything together so all the spacing between letters is the same as between words. I haven't tried sending with normal letter spacing to see if it holds that and expands the word spacing, but every time I've tried to record how I want to send it comes back with my call blended together with the same space between the 3 call signs as the individual letters. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] P3 v1.17
The CW code display is now working on the external monitor. It has to be turned on and off through the P3 SVGA menu. I thought the external monitor might revert to the full screen (turning off the decode screen) when the mode is changed from CW to LSB or USB. This is not the case. Unless the CW is almost perfect, I am getting a lot of jibberish. I find font size #2 looks good. Mike, try these settings as a test and see what they do for you. In my own opinion, I have found the decode now is probably as good as it was before, just requires some different settings. [Elecraft] KX3 PSK31/RTTY/CW Accessory
Dear KX3 Community, FYI...I just finished a homebrew project to enhance my PSK31/RTTY experience with the KX3. I love the innovative feature in the KX3 (and K3) where you can send and receive PSK31 and RTTY while portable, without a computer. But I thought a nifty enhancement would be to capture the 8 character scrolling characters on a bigger screen so I could read a few sentences at a time, and not have to keep my eyes glued to the screen. And while I was at it, I also thought it would be nice to send using a keyboard instead of paddles. So I made a device I call the Data Depot (until I think of a better name). I've already made a number of PSK31 QSOs with it. All made possible with the KX3's internal PSK31/RTTY decoding and it's set of commands available via the serial port. It does CW also, but since I actually like CW, I didn't focus on it :-). For the KX3 or K3, it'll send CW thru the serial port as you type, or it has a relay inside to hook up to the key input of any rig. Pictures can be found in the Yahoo group at: I also added some at the bottom of this post, but this is my first time adding pics, so I'm hoping they get added OK. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KX3/photos/album/437249179/pic/list The case it's in is nice, but it'll fit into a smaller case, if I can find the right one. Here's what it does: General Features • Uses Sierra Radio's Hamstack Microcontroller Project Platform • Power requirements: 9-15 VDC • LCD brightness control • At 9V, draws 16 ma with no LCD backlight (still readable in sunlight), 27 ma with medium LCD backlight brightness, and up to 70 ma at max LCD backlight brightness. • Connects to the KX3 with a serial cable (simple 1/8 stereo cable) • Connects to the K3 with a DB9 serial cable • Automatically syncs with the KX3 or K3 no matter what RS232 baud rate is selected in the rig Receiving • Displays data in real time, as it is decoded and presented by the rig. • Most recent 80 characters displayed on the screen • Automatically removes extra spaces within text, so more of the useful text is displayed. • Tap a button to freeze the display. A solid LED on indicates the display is non-real-time • Hold the same button to scroll back. Scrolls back approx.. 1 line per second, to a maximum of 20 lines. • Tap the button again to resume normal, real time display. LED is out. Transmitting • Uses a PS2 keyboard • Starts transmitting whenever keys are pressed • Stops automatically 4 seconds after the last character is sent (rig feature) • Press the ESC key to terminate the transmission immediately Stored Messages • Stores 10 messages, 60 characters each using F1 – F10 on the keyboard • Press F12 to enter the message edit mode, then select the F key you want to edit/store. A flashing LED indicates you are in the edit message mode • Type the message and press F12 again to save and exit • Press ESC any time when in the edit mode to exit without saving • Messages are stored in EEPROM, so they are non-volatile, and always there. • Messages can be chained. Example: if CQ is stored in F1, pressing F1 twice will send the entire message twice. How it was Packaged • Top panel o 80 character LCD display o Mode button (to freeze, scroll, edit) o Mode status LED (OFF: normal, ON: Freeze/Scroll, BLINKING: message edit • Rear panel o 2.1 mm DC Power connector o 3.5 mm (1/8) serial port connector (for KX3) o DB-9 male serial port connector (for K3) o PS2 keyboard connector o System reset button o LCD backlight brightness control 72/73, Shel KF0UR http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/file/n7559657/KF0UR_Data_Depot-1.jpg http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/file/n7559657/KF0UR_Data_Depot-2.jpg http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/file/n7559657/KF0UR_Data_Depot-3.jpg -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX3-PSK31-RTTY-CW-Accessory-tp7559657.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Very true with the local UPS stores. They tell you the shipping rates are the same which is true but obscure the insurance rates unless you ask. They were triple the on line quote when I got plundered years ago. Simple solution is to open an online account and take care of it there. From online you get to print a bar-coded label. Now the package can be dropped at any UPS store with no fees. I dislike cutting the local guy out but I really hate being ripped off by them. 73, Bob K2TK On 7/22/2012 5:14 PM, Jim N7US wrote: Regarding shipping, the last I knew each UPS store is individually owned and they are free to charge whatever they want for insurance. Not sure what you are using but I can tell you that this is normal on the K3since you are monitoring the output from the DSP that applies EQ compression etc you are hearing the monitor with a slight delay that is a perceived echo the advantage here is that you are hearing what is going on the air after all the filtering is applied. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - regarding support (update)
The reason it's costing you so much to ship your K3 is not insurance, but where you're taking it be be shipped. UPS isn't making that money, whomever owns the UPS store you're taking it to is. Don't ever use a UPS store if you have a choice. Take it directly to a UPS owned customer center or a FedEx or FedEx Kinkos. It shouldn't cost more than $30-$35 to ship your K3 to California fully insured for its value (and more!). If you take it to a UPS store rather than an actual UPS or FedEx owned customer counter, then you're not only allowing yourself to get shafted, but you're helping them do it. 73, Scott, N9AA On 7/22/12 9:06 PM, Bill wrote: Several people have contacted my off list asking why so expensive for shipping?
