OT: Market saga
I had another reply from Greenwich Market the other day, basically saying they're not going to do anything. I had earlier told them I wasn't interested in pursuing the individual concerned, more in getting across the message that photography is not an illegal activity. They replied to the effect that all their traders know this already. That's bollox of course - clearly whatever rules they have about this were ignored during the incident in question, so they ought to reiterate them. But trying to insist that they do something is a waste of effort and I don't really have the time to escalate it right now. I'll have a bit more time next month and will no doubt be taking photos in and around the market again, so it'll be interesting to see what happens if the trader in question happens to spot me. Re: Can we talk about fill flash pttl?
Hi Christine - I use fill PTTL fill flash in my macro shots all the time - virtually every shot that I work with is shot with flash. No problems once you know how to adjust the flash etc. I shoot manually with the exposure usually set to the ambient meter reading or to -1/2 stop. The amount of fill needed is relative to the primarily light source. In direct full brutal sun I shoot with no exposure compensation on the flash. On overcast cloudy days I may set the flash compensation to -3 and the compensation on the camera body to -2. In some situations I have to resort to lowering the power on the flash by dropping the wide angle diffuser or putting a diffuser on it. But those cases are very low light situations where the subject is very close. After doing this for a while I now just know where to set things - just experiment a bit. Digital makes the technical end of photography so easy I use the same basic technique for macros, birds, and even outdoor portraits. For wildlife it is split second decision making and having the flash compensation in the body is a great asset. If you put the flash on a bracket or use a diffuser etc it just equates to a certain number of stops of compensation, so you just consider that in your mental calculations... Like In this soft light I'd like to have -4 stops of compensation but that diffuser is equivalent to -2 so I'll just dial in -2. I'm working with the flash generally much closer than the minimum working distance - like the subject is 12 to 24 inches away - so overexposure is always a problem. I've used the same basic setup with the Pz-1p (usually with slide film), *ist-D, K-10D, and now K7. Each camera had it's own quirks and I had to adjust the exposure compensation for each. I find that I dial in much more negative compensation with the K7 than I did with any of the other cameras. Good luck! Re: OT: Gasoline prices?
From: Bill Owens Part is local,John. Governor Perdue gave us in NC the nation's third highest gas tax at 35 cents per gallon Bill If taxes went up the governor didn't do it by herself. I'd be surprised if she's even allowed to blow her nose without the legislature's approval? Legislature in NC keeps the governor on a *short* leash. Looked it up now that you mentioned it. Prices around here dropped $0.34 a gallon during June. Tax went up by $0.025 (two a half cents) on July 1. Gas price was back up a nickle that day. I'm seeing gas prices increased by $0.24 per gallon since then. WUNC radio says we've got the thirteenth highest gas tax, although based on an American Petroleum Institute map I found, we're 10th highest. And according to the NC Petroleum and Convenience Marketers, during the first week of July prices in Virginia and Georgia (who did NOT raise their gas taxes) went up about a nickle more than prices did here in NC with the higher tax. Go figure. Plus, the NC sales tax went down by a penny the same day the gas tax went up - but I don't reckon Bev Perdue gets to claim credit for that any more than she deserves blame for the gas tax going up. On Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 1:11 AM, John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com wrote: Not a rant yet, just curious. Prices were up around 31% since the first of the year during the week after GFM, dropped back to only 20% higher by the 4th, but are now back around 30% higher today. Anyone else seeing this? At that point, by activating the flash, you force the shutter speed to say /1/160 sec (or slower, in case of camera/flash set to slow-speed synch) and that's enough for getting bad overexposure, with the added flash light on top of it. It happened to me and that's the reason for the mess. When using the flash for compensating backlight, check that the shutter speed set by the flash activation won't overexpose available light! Minimum focus distance DOF relative to extension (tubes)?
Two questions: Forgive my ignorance, but is there a formula or table somewhere telling me what sort of minimum focus distances can be achieved with different Takumars with the various Pentax extension tubes, or does one simply have to experiment? Seems like somewhere there should be someone who quantified it, but maybe not. DOF can be calculated knowing the focal length, f-stop, subject distance and film/sensor size http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html but is there a similar calculator that takes into account extension amount? Not directly, no. If you think about it, there can't be a simple one; different lenses with the same focal length can have different mimimum- focussing distances. It's possible to calculate a pretty good approximation for any given lens, but in practice it's probably easy just to experiment - to get really accurate results you'd need to know how the effective focal length of the lens assembly changes with change in focussing distance, and that depends on the optical formula of the lens. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Minimum focus distance DOF relative to extension (tubes)?
Hi Darren, When doing macro I've always found that magnification is more important than minimum focusing distance. I usually set up a combination and photograph a ruler and while I'm at it measure the distance between the front of the lens and the subject just for good measure so I know what I can fit under the setup (usually a tank of sea water). It's annoying when you get down to 1.5mm or so filling the frame - I need a high resolution ruler. For depth of field the same rules apply as always. The problem being that the web site you showed doesn't have enough decimal places to tell you the details. I've found a few calculators that do, but they are few and far between and the usual answer is not a lot. I had some spare time yesterday so I went for a walk in a local nature land preserve. I was hoping for wildlife, but though I heard the call of Egrets. Herons, and at least one Red Tailed Hawk in the distance I saw nary a one. The only creatures bigger than small toads that crossed my path were a couple of chipmunks too far away for the lens mounted on my camera at the time to show them as anything besides small specks. But it was a tranquil couple of hours, except for the mosquito and deer flies. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1604247/PESO/A%20walk%20in%20West%20Woods/GESO%20--%20awalkinwestwoods.html Equipment: Hover your mouse pointer over an image to see what lens was used. I agree. No one should tell you how to spend your time. I certainly wouldn't do that. I merely expressed amazement that anyone would go to the trouble of recording the price of gas, which is something that must be purchased regardless of the price. But no value judgement was intended. Increased fuel consumption was the only symptom of a cracked exhaust manifold in my Civic del Sol. But, more to the point, is everything you do essential? Of the things that are not essential (say, taking pictures), should we characterize that as a compulsion? Something pathological and deserving of ridicule? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Paul On the contrary the price of gas and food somewhat dictates where I can go, how I get there and how indulgent I am with foods that aren't of absolute necessity. -- Rob Studdert (Digital Image Studio) Tel: +61-418-166-870 UTC +10 Hours Gmail, eBay, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Picasa: distudio -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
