[lace] Pillow Stand

2012-03-14 Thread Lin Hudren
About 10-11 years ago, I took a camera tripod and made it into a pillow
stand. I got some plexiglas at the hardware store and cut it into two
pieces - one about 14 square (used the most even for larger pillows - I
have a 30 pillow that sits well on it) and the rest for a larger support
for larger pillows. I screwed on a flat piece of wood that holds a metal
piece for screwing the tab on the tripod (which goes on the bottom of your
camera). The tripod should be tall enough to crank up for standing to lace
if you like as that is really a great demonstration level. You can also
set an angle for the pillow for lacing.

I use those 4 squares/rounds that you open jars with to keep the pillow
from slipping on the plexiglas for when I tilt it for comfort. When I have
the larger pillows on it, I can walk around to work on it but the pillow
can easily be turned.

This is very light weight and if you put a strap on it, you can carry it
over your shoulder. I also added a cup holder so I can have my tea at the
ready. The plexiglas piece goes into my tote with my pillow. With this on
my shoulder, i can carry my antique piano stool with a back for my chair
(demos and classes). It allows me to twist sideways when warranted and my
last hand holds my tea cup as I go into a meeting or to a demo. The
flexibility of this is awesome - height and angle unlimited.

At home I don't go to a lot of trouble for it. It goes into the closet
folded up nicely and it can wait in my car for transport to meetings. I
never have to worry about where to sit or stand to lace.

At lace demos, I have a piece of fabric with elastic at one end (like a
skirt) that i put on the plexiglas so it looks like a long tablecloth and
is classy. It is long enough to cover the tripod when extended for lacing
while standing up.

I also use it for my camera when i want to get photos and videos at demos,
classes and meetings.

One other thing I carry with me is two pieces of wood for under my feet.
They are slightly smaller than bricks but need the height of a brick for
ease on back stress. It is amazing to go home with no back ache just for
putting your feet up 2 or so. You can rig this on any stand, but I like
the opportunity to move them around at will.

Re: [lace] There's never enough room

2012-05-29 Thread Lin Hudren
Wow, talking about the meat trays, those styrofoam trays are not very deep,
but they are smooth and will hold weight. you can get a few free from
butchers but collect the right size to suit you. If you cover it with
cloth and also have the side flaps mentioned above, that would serve for
travel as well as holding them for use. I would be tempted to have the
flaps extra long so several trays could be stacked and then secured
together. The edge would allow scooping without actually changing the
configuration. But if you wanted smaller ones that would only hold maybe
10-12 bobbins each, you can cut them in half and use the lack of the lip as
the scoop. I will have to test this out myself as a rubber band can secure
the bobbins in the tray and altho it would suffer, you can use divider or
hat pins to secure the tray to the pillow. these can be disposable after a
few uses.

As soon as I read that I immediately thought of those cheap wooden meat

them with just a rubber band wound round the head and no spangle at all. It
was a pain though. However, if I glued a small metal nut on to the end,
they could work. The only disadvantage I can see with such think bobbins is
that they'd be a pain to wind.

An alternative magnetic bobbin is carriage bolts, if they come in a thin

Love that idea - and I hadn't thought of it. I'll check them out at the

2013-03-17 Thread Lin Hudren
At one time - when a very green newbee - somewhat still a newbee - i didn't
realize that the thickness of the thread would work better with more or
less weight on the spangles appropriately. i too decided to compensate but
went for fishing pole weights. you can get them really small so they add
just the weight of an extra bead or two. it doesn't look so grand unless
you decide to paint them, but they can be added and removed easily for the
duration of the project without damaging the bobbins. it sure saves time
on the spangling which can be mostly uniform except for colors and shapes.
 just a thought.

Re: [lace] tote bags

2013-03-21 Thread Lin Hudren
A few years ago, i purchased the recycle store bags (usually about $1-2
each) in a variety of colors depending on the store. They had their own
logos on them. Some were even fold-a-way ones. i brought them home and
covered the logo with a block of fabric (in my case different mallard
designs) which i then embroidered onto it and in some cases added a few
lines of embroidery floss for more decoration as a frame. i gifted these
to family and friends since they turned out quite nice - could weather rain
and could be a variety of sizes as well.

i mention this because what is to say we could not enjoy doing a 20th
anniversary gift exchange as well. I am not artistic, but i do have a lot
of imagination and skill elsewhere. the main theme could be a tote bag
that can be improved/personalized, etc. or it can be something else that
the gifter would make to reflect their talents.

i am still for a variety of items with a catalog to purchase what works for
your needs and price range. Once the items has sold out, it is gone so the
early bird . . . . . . Most manufacturers have a minimum order and you
would not need to buy 1,000 of something and end up with 565 still on the
shelf afterwards. altho, you do have 365 days in which to sell it when it
is fresh.

there are so many good ideas out there, i am glad i am not on a deciding
panel. i will have more fun over these two years hearing (and smiling at -
with an aha too) other ideas than just reading. i am easily entertained
tho. Thank you.

Re: [lace] glasses

2013-03-28 Thread Lin Hudren
I purchased several pairs of clip-on and flip-up magnifiers in varying
degrees of intensity for my off-the-shelf magnifiers. i can put them up
out of the way when not needed but have them handy at a flip with my hand.
i use this with regular sunglasses when i drive and need to read something
rapidly and it is much easier than taking the sunglasses off and putting on
the magnifiers to read which usually are either on my head, in the
neckline of my blouse/shirt or in my backpack. that really comes in handy
having the convenience readily available.

i tried this for some close work lately (turning 70 next month) but found
using my regular intensity magnifiers (2.25) with a half glass pair in
front (2.0) is just perfect. I found some half glasses with no rims so it
is like wearing bifocals. i don't need the intensity and try to make my
eyes work with less help as much as possible. guess that is why my eyes
are so good on their own. i can do most crafts with just a bit of help.
now that phone book (and thank goodness we have the internet now for
avoiding using them) it is a totally different matter - i go and find very
high intensity glasses or grab that magnifying glass - you know the one
they use as an icon for search?

the best thing i just discovered the last couple of months is that some
magnifier glasses have the intensity etched on the bottom corner of the
lens so i can know what i am grabbing. i wear the same pair(s) all the
time - some are 1.75, 2.00 or 2.25 - and never know which is which. i keep
pairs everywhere too. i found the Dollar Tree, 99 Cent Stores and such
carry off-the-shelf magnifying glasses and so when they are scratched or
well worn, i can replace them or lose them without too much worry. i have
folding up one in cases places that i might need to grab them for lack of
the usual ones. i keep a 4.0 pair in my bathroom for slivers and such.

well, we are very fortunate to have this tool available to us. i just
recommend you try to keep your eyes working for you. my daughter 20 years
younger is wearing 3.5 intensity because she would not believe her mother
knew best. i watch for 3.5, 3.75 and 4.0 for her but wish she had taken
care earlier in life. another trick is wearing sunglasses all your life.
it keeps your eyes healthy later in life and also avoids crow's feet from
squinting.

happy lacing.

dozen other variations. Not sure that a 'potpourri' would be appropriate
inside the cabinet as it could affect lace much later.

 I had a very old

with a composition I made up that included vinegar and baking soda, then
placed grapefruit peels around an upside down laundry basket I had set

to allow it to dry. She never went back there and though it could have
 been a

 grapefruit
likely did the trick. I also used it on a corner of a kitchen rug she had
piddled on after washing it, and she never went back there, either.

 At
times I used grapefruit oil instead (where it was safe to use oils), and
 have
used grapefruit seed extract for safe disinfecting of non-bleachable

Of course most of this info is generally non-applicable to lace itself.

Re: [lace] books vs kindle

2013-05-18 Thread Lin Hudren
Hello All,

I am a full time RVer and am always looking for a new book to read. I have
space and weight concerns. my security blanket is a book. to make room
for those extra pillows and bobbins, tatting shuttles and threads, etc., i
invested in an eReader (kindle keyboard) a bit over 2 years ago. i was
able to replace all those stored books in epub or mobi format and have
purchased thousands of others. i have about 45,000 books in my library
(stored on 12 DVDs). i have a book no matter where i am. since i read 6
or 7 books a week (entertainment), it was a blessing to be able to have so
many at my fingertips. i wish i had had this technology many years ago. i
have several lace books, pattern books for my favorite crafts, etc. usually
in pdf format. the unit i purchased will handle these formats. i can read
and have music playing in the background (mostly classics for the dedicated
reader) which cuts out road and other RVer's noises. if i am tired of
reading i can enable the book from text to speech and listen with my eyes
closed (no music tho). the third blessing is that it has a built-in
dictionary which allows me to look up any words i am unfamiliar with - we
don't use our language to its fullest.

eReaders are not for everyone. the one i purchased does not have a back
light so i can go for 2-3 months without having to charge it up as long as
i am conservative about the music. i also am not exposing my eyes to blue
light which is now being discovered to be a problem. i have to have light
on it like a regular paper book but the weight is so easy to hold for long
periods - much lighter than even a paperback book. i do not have glare in
the outside daylight like my phone or xyboard so i can see better in
daylight and a light clipped onto it at night is great.

when i have a lace project, i can photograph the diagrams with my phone and
convert a collage of the pattern into a pdf document and load it onto the
eReader and carry that with me rather than a book. i save wear and tear on
my books - i do have two boxes of lace books i refuse to give up. maybe
some day i will scan those in and make them into a pdf documents to put on
the eReader.

last idea is that i carry this with me everywhere. i do not carry a purse
or even a backpack any longer. i have tummy pockets (like those on hooded
sweatshirts) on most of my shirts and it fits nicely in there. i can
attach a earphone to it and listen to a book while i do yard work, ironing,
walking for exercise and even standing in line at the grocery store (no
bluetooth). again, it is not for everyone but it sure has made my life
more pleasant and it keeps on giving.

enjoy everything you do and all the benefits our times allow us. i don't
text on phones tho. i can do email on the kindle keyboard with wifi
connection, but i use my xyboard, cell or computer for that. i like a full
keyboard for typing. Happy trails.

Just a note that when we label people or try to slot folks into a groove,
there is always the exception. while it makes good fodder, we usually are
narrow minded ourselves to think that only certain capabilities create
certain things.

last was the folks who lurk now it is mathmatically inclined. if you
have a strong opinion great but please try not to force or defend your
opinion on the others who may have their protective talents get their hairs
up. let's share the positive and the good and the tips that you earn (not
just learn) in making our craft wonderfully rewarding. i read this new
thought and considered it in relation to my close family and friends and
could see correlation. wonderful brain activity for me and a few smiles -
not chuckles tho. now there seems a war developing in the list - my energy

That is not what was said. The point is that many women whose minds are
mathematically, etc. inclined are drawn to lacemaking. That is, of course,
not the only group drawn to the craft, but there seems to be a fairly large
number of such math, etc. types who are drawn. There are, of course, other
aspects of lacemaking which draw other people to the art, but that argument
will not go nearly as far in promoting lacemaking in children, as there are
so many other disciplines, areas, that do that. Music, the arts, painting,
to name a few. But since those areas do not involve lace, I was
emphasizing the mathematical connection. And note, I mentioned Torchon in
particular. Flanders would be another mathematical lace. Binche went
beyond that, and while it incorporates Flanders in some ways, it went on to
 other areas as well. lrb

I am astonished that no one has challenged the notion that people with
superior math/science/computer programming skills make the best
lacemakers!! It may be that those who are making the claims happen to
have those skills, but being able to execute a lace pattern is not the
same as making it a thing of beauty, which separates the competent
lacemaker from the extraordinary one. And it take an artist to design
the lace in the first place.

Re: [lace] Background checks for lace teachers in the US--cost

2013-07-09 Thread Lin Hudren
when my children were in school, i am not sure background and other checks
were made but mostly the proof was in the pudding and i was blessed that my
children were able to get a very good education in a smaller school system.
it allowed for more personalization than i believe teachers today are
allowed.

With this discussion, i am also glad that an opinion such as slotting
students into groups by instructor personal evaluation (even if taught)
would allow the child to grow that my children had the opportunity for.
the instructors for my children worked with us parents as we did with them
for the benefit of the child. they were given the opportunity to blossom
in their own way rather than be slotted and directed in only a limited
direction for preconceived notions that only math talented people were
equipped to do certain things.

have we reverted to the dark ages of learning/teaching? i am glad i can
delete this thread because it is tiresome and is just showing that we too
have limited our own creativity by not just learning but deciding what
future lacemakers require. ugh. glad my group is so talented we are all
able to learn from others without having to be a mathematician. hopefully
others out there are given the freedom to grow without judgment.

I would like to set up a little kit to take about with me but avoiding

other suggestions for a way they successfully store and carry small amounts

I think the problem lies in the fact that a lot of needles, pins and
 crochet
hooks etc. (sewing, knitting etc.) are no longer made in stainless steel,
but instead are nickel-steel. These will not only rust, but also flake (the
outer steel layer comes off) etc.
So be sure to buy proper 18/8 stainless steel- if you can find them. they
are generally more expensive, but worth the extra.

 Subject: [lace-chat] Caring for needles
This is a general question about sewing needles but also tatting needles
 and
 keeping them in good condition.
I recently went to use some sewing needles that have been stored in a
 little
cloth carry case and they look rusty at the point where they stick through
 the
cloth so not something I would use to sew with, particularly not lace.
 This
particular case has been sitting in a cupboard in our caravan so may have
 got
damp at some time so understandable I suppose.

i do use music for a lot of different areas, but i, too, need not to be
distracted. i found several MP3 albums on Amazon for dedicated readers
which only have music and no lyrics. it is classical. my favorite
provider just came out with album #10 which is very good. a bit uplifting
- not charging - and so you keep up a good pace and don't mellow out too
much. each of the albums i have purchased has been a bit different enough
that getting a new album (about 99 cents US for 24-25 songs/tracks) can
allow me to pick the pace it will set to suit my task. cleaning the
bathroom requires a bit of a celtic stomp the foot type. you can test them
out by listening to the samples. you don't get much but it gives you an
idea about the spirit of the music. i have all 10 and have found the ones
i like best for what i am doing. i think they are range from an hour to at
least two hours. i download them to my computer, cell phone and my tablet.
just a thought and something to give you pleasure. i play the samples on
my computer while i do something else on the computer and it is a
distraction but i find my shoulders do stay low while i am doing the tense
seek and find missions.

 Not for years yet.

Let's see, I made my first piece of honiton 6 weeks later and that bucks

As a teacher it is your duty to guide and encourage every student to make

Re: [lace] prickings

2013-11-23 Thread Lin Hudren
i found many years ago while demonstrating that if i put my feet up on a
flat brick, that little bit saved not only my feet but my lower back too.
it is tense work sharing our lovelies. because of the weight, i didn't
want to carry 2 bricks with me so i got styrofoam and used that. you can
cover the pieces (one for each foot - or one longer one) but the damp from
the ground makes it look tacky. one old timer saw this and made little
foot stools for each of us demonstrating and while a bit heavier, blends
great with our costumes of being pioneer women/men.

i am sure you can look around and find something to help ease your later
aches. i never feel the pain until afterwards because it is too much fun.
now i don't have to be concerned and with my tripod table, piano stool
with a full back, my tote with my pillow and supplies (including my little
stool), i go and come home having not only the pleasure of the day but the
glow afterwards for the benefits sharing always grants me. Happy lacing.

You only need to elevate 2 for the relief - surprisingly enough. anything
else is like an ottoman at home which does not lend itself to working
comfortably. i use my stool during tax season in the office under the desk
to alleviate a but of stress and tension. they used to have angled units
in the office supply stores for this. but, believe me, the foam is hardly
costly and if you only have sheets of thin stuffs, cut them up to shoe size
and glue them together. probably will only cost you pennies.

Re: [lace] Demonstrating strategy

2013-12-03 Thread Lin Hudren
I set up the Springett snake because it gives an alternative color down the
middle and can be made rapidly even for new triers. it lets them follow
the path of the bobbins. it has few bobbins and i use a metallic thread in
the middle to give glitter to it which also is appealing. i pre-wind
bobbins in sets and take at least 3 pillows with me so hopefully they will
take the time to work on it and finish it to take home. i also make sure i
have a bead for the eye. it is fast and is lovely. if you have time
beforehand, you can make up some in the colors you take as kits and let
them work until they have to go and then just give them the one you made
in those colors and another trier can finish it up and take home the one
made by two people. i like to send them home with something because then
they admire it and think i can do this. a list of supplies needed to get
started (only for this simple pattern as supplies can get overwhelming if
they see all the will eventually use as they develop can also be handed
out. you also can have 3-4 triers doing it at the same time.

i frequently set up a card table at the library and give 4 people at a time
the opportunity. i have 2 pieces of square thick foam covered totally in
cloth for triers and then carry 7 cookie pillows for 2 more. light weight
and small. my prickings are also prepared and pricked ahead. i carry at
least 10 with me when i go to a demonstration. i use a tripod table which
i can elevate for them to stand and see me work but also lower so i can sit
down on my piano stool which has a back and glass claw feet. if i don't
carry my cup of tea, i can carry all of the above in one trip. i haven't
made a cup holder to drape over my shoulder yet. but the tripod has a cup
holder and if i can keep it upright over my shoulder, i can put my
spill-proof cup in it. that tho is iffy.

one other thought is to start the snake and go until you have the bead for
the eye in place and let them go from there. this pattern also lends
itself to roller pillows that have narrow rollers. i make the same pattern
so i have a supply of finished ones for the next demo.

after the holidays you will find them for half price. i got the plastic

This is a great idea. you can also use two chop sticks glued into a very
small piece of wood with two pin holes which will go into your pillow to
hold your pattern. if you laminate the pattern or print it on card stock
you only need one set for this. i made two because it works better for me.
corsage pins will secure it nicely or you can use doll needles and make
divider pins with decoration to suit your pleasure.

Re: [lace] Demonstrating

2013-12-05 Thread Lin Hudren
Since we older lacers using paper books and such are geared to that, it is
not surprising the younger generation has no interest. I found if i can
trust my Xyboard not to fall, i have my pattern and pricking on it.
Younger people wonder how you can use a tablet with a pillow so wander
over and check it out. Even using a cell phone on some holder can make
people look. if you have a really loud looking color cover, that draws
the eye too.

I wear a very simplistic pioneer outfit including the bed cap and wire
rimmed reading glasses perched on the end of my nose. if nothing else, you
get a smile but it is something that draws people to you. my table is
a camera tripod with a plexiglas top where i put jar opener/shelf liner on
so the pillow will stay put when i tilt it and i elevate the pillow to work
on while standing. i have one small one and one larger one which i only
use for demos. i can use a medium sized pillow and have room on the
plexiglas to hold a light/magnifier/tablet. this can get uncomfortable so
i have my piano stool at hand to sit. if you have one of those folding
stools that are higher, that is a bit easier but also a bit harder on the
back than regular height but not as bad as standing. anything unique and
eye catching will bring people close to see. Happy lacing.

Re: [lace] Demos

2013-12-07 Thread Lin Hudren
I agree. Tatting is 3 movements to doing it. I say the same for bobbin
lacemaking even tho technically it is 2. once you master these movements,
you can grow into all else. I shuttle tat and have demonstrated and held a
class where i gift kits (ready wound shuttles, etc.) at Americana Days -
historical society events. one year i even had my picture in the paper
with my night cap stringing a dipped candle. i have more fun and people
just love being near a new thing being done with a smile.

i just believe that a project should be fast for trying and if you finish
it, you get it to take home. that way you are still thinking about the
doing. I do this for the pillows that others play with and try out.

But so there is adult interest as food for thought, i have a Milanese motif
that i work. When doing an Americana Day event, i have a table with 6-12
pillows with a start of different laces that caters to more folks. I do an
owl in Honiton on a Honiton pillow, have several sizes of cookie pillows.
I made a place mat pillow to show travel opportunities. I made a pillow
that started out like a honiton pillow but ended up more like a basketball
that sits nicely in a salad bowl where i have a project on the top and one
on the side (yardage). then i got a spool from braid at the store and
topped it with a 7 cookie pillow which with an elastic cover on the pillow
keeps it together so the bobbins can hang down like icicles. when i was
thinner, the spool went under my thighs and my thighs slipped into the
braid space so it sat on my lap securly. you can never demonstrate all the
various opportunities for this craft. we are only limited by our
imagination and this is on craft that affords lots of creative license.
the variety tho will appeal to someone.

the snake is instant gratification, useful as a bookmark and because i use
metallic thread in the middle, it is appealing and eye catching. do you
need it, probably not and my mother who was deathly afraid of snakes
would not appreciate it other than to look at it. but you might be able to
take it home if you work and master the method. yes, provide the look of
more beautiful lace making but also cater to the doer that will remember
with a token in hand afterwards. once i was found by a youngster with
snake in hand a year afterwards. they wanted to show me they loved having
it even after a year. what better reward.

Yes, that stuff (in the US it's called 'Wonder Tape') seemed like a great
idea for bobbins but I did not find it useful. I tried narrow strips to
just cover the area near the hitch and I tried strips as wide as the neck
is long. Neither worked well. I think the issue is that the neck of a
bobbin, even full of thread, is just not big enough around. I couldn't get
the tape to stick to itself on such a tight turn. The tape is rather thick
and may be too stiff to wrap around such a narrow cylinder.

Just my experience, maybe others had more luck.

[lace] Spring Bookmark Exchange

2015-05-07 Thread Lin Hudren
Wow, what a wonderful response so far and many days yet to join the fun. I
have both feet in the water now and thank those who have been responsive so
far for your faith in me doing the job. i hope many more of you will join
in the fun. There is nothing like the sense of accomplishment for making a
project happen. Bookmarks are necessities in life and bring smiles to all
who use them and share the pleasure of a gift from afar with those near.

If you are curious, you can go to:
http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2012bookmarks/index.html or
http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2013bookmarks/index.html to view previous
years' exchanges. There are many more browsing opportunities for ideas
and/or just to drool. Jenny graciously devotes her time and energy to
allowing all of us to see what, as a group, we accomplish. If you have not
signed up yet, come join in the fun. The carousal has lots of room and is
just starting to turn but the music is on. Let me know if you want the
lion, giraffe, unicorn or a colorful horse as well as many other creatures
available. There are lovely sleigh bench seats awaiting too.

The schedule will go like this:

May 4-12 Sign Ups

May 15 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

June 13All bookmarks should be in the mail

Same rules apply as the Christmas card exchange: send in name, snail mail
address, how many bookmarks you want to make and any geographical
preferences to me at *linhud...@gmail.com linhud...@gmail.com*. After
making your bookmark(s) please take a picture and email directly to Jenny
Brandis (je...@brandis.com.au) who once again is a Dear heart and will be
posting all on her web site or to me (linhud...@gmail.com). If you wonder
if your partner was able to send in a photo of their bookmark to you, just
send one upon receipt and Jenny will make sure everyone is represented.

If you have any questions or preferences, please feel free to email me
linhud...@gmail.com. This is just too much fun for one person to hog.
Come take a bit of it for yourself. Happy lacemaking.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] Bookmark Exchange

2015-05-10 Thread Lin Hudren
We are down to the last days for sign ups for the bookmark exchange but
don't worry if you are a day or so behind. I will make it happen. Just
contact me (*linhud...@gmail.com linhud...@gmail.com*) and it will be
worked out. Also, if you are delayed in mailing your bookmark to your
partner, let your partner and me know so we can take the worry out of the
wonderful anticipation. This is to be FUN not a job or chore. I will be
sending out the exchange partner pairings in a day or so - no later than
5/15 but sooner if able. I am always anxious to know who will be getting
my bookmark and what far away place I will be receiving mail from. But if
you were on holiday or didn't see the announcement until the last minute -
join in anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I hope there is time to
get a bookmark made and in the mail even after this week.

The schedule is going like this:

May 4-12 Sign Ups

May 15 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

June 13All bookmarks should be in the mail (if possible)

There is still room on the carousal. No one has claimed the lion yet. The
critters are all whimsical creatures and so very colorful - much like
lace. How exciting. Come and join in the fun. If this is your first
time, you are going to have lots of fun. If you have been doing this for
years, you know how much fun it can be. Any type of lace and pattern is
appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is creative license at
its best. Don't be shy. Remember, this is your time to shine.

[lace] Bookmark Exchange Partners 2015

2015-05-13 Thread Lin Hudren
All Exchange Partners have been assigned and emails sent out. If you
signed up and did not receive notice of your partner, please contact me
personally (linhud...@gmail.com). I may have typed your email address
incorrectly but I can reply to you accurately.

I found during the holidays that there is such a thing in the USA of a
global stamp which then cost $1.15. My ornaments and bookmarks mail out
overseas using this. Just ask for it rather than have them make you fill
out the forms and/or even weigh the envelope. I use a card as padding
for them. These go for one regular stamp intercontinental as well.

If you still want to participate, contact me and I will work it out.

I do hope you have fun. Please let me know if your partner is not
responsive and remember to send photos to Jenny Brandis at
je...@brandis.com.au. To see why we share our photos with Jenny, check
this out: http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2012bookmarks/index.html or

Re: [lace] Questions for those who use bobbins

2015-04-19 Thread Lin Hudren
One is to get a fat drinking straw the next time you're in a restaurant
that has them. Cut sections of the straw roughly the size of the neck, and
then slice the straw open from top to bottom. The straw can then be
slipped over the neck and thread and hitch, and keep it under control.

i have those hook headed bobbins which work really well for metallics. but
the straw i use for covering pre-wound bobbins to keep the threads clean
and if i have a project that i know i cannot work on for a while, i cover
those for both clean threads and holding the thread in place. i like using
metallic threads.

2015-07-14 Thread Lin Hudren
I am so pleased to announce that Jenny has wonderfully set up an awesome
web site that is a tool as well as the panorama of all the lovely lace
presentations. I think she went an extra mile this time and does all of us
proud to have her as a member of Arachne and be so supportive. So as she
aptly states sit back, relax and enjoy. I am sure all of us will whether
or not we participated. I hope it encourages all to participate next
year.

With the postal wars out there, your bookmark may still be in transit.
Thanks for your patience. Please check back on the web site in a week or
so to see the missing scans/photos and often times during the year to get
inspiration. They are so lovingly created and shared. Jenny will add the
missing scans/photos as they arrive. We are dealing with
vacations/holidays and scans not done in the rush to mail so recipients are
carrying the load - thank you. But I am anxious to see what is missing
when it is added. Thank all of you who shared in this adventure with a
purpose and new home for our lace endeavors. Sharing lace is what keeps us
happy to be lacing. I had a grand time and hope you did as well.

In a special-interest publication, I have come across a long review of a
new book about mangle boards, used for smoothing damp linens. The book is
$185, so I thought the review would be an inexpensive substitute. It will
give those who are interested a jumping off point for printing pictures,
etc. from the internet. It is the last book reviewed at this site:

If you do not know about this subject, go to our archives and put
"Mangling Lace" in the subject line.

Re: [lace] Cookie pillow question, and digest

2015-10-12 Thread Lin Hudren
let's not forget the block pillow and all those that have drawers or
storage for tools in them. i just love the variety and i have a "ball"
pillow that i put a yardage pricking on the sides and a motif on the top
and/or bottom. it is great for when you are finishing up a motif and want
to have the next one ready to lace when traveling. i have a roller/bolster
pillow that has openings on both ends to stow scissors, extra bobbins and
threads, etc. if we are only limited in our creativity by our imagination,
think how many opportunities for different pillows that suit our
imaginations.

do you have a power drill? mine is a little $10 one from Walmart and you
can use it to wind bobbins by putting the bobbin in the space where the
drill bit goes. i got a larger one but it is harder because it is a bit
too powerful. the little rechargeable one does a nice job and isn't too
bulky. sorry, i forgot about this one. i only have these three. if you

if you go on eBay and search for bobbin winders, there is a guy in Utah who
lists a small wooden one that is a dream for about $15. i have purchased
two - one for me and one for a friend.

the other one i have is Plexiglas and is made by a guy in Australia. Holly
Van Sciver used to carry his as well but not sure she still does. it is
even smaller and very rugged.

if you need more info, let me know and i will help research and get more
details. these are the two i have had for 16 years.

how much you enjoyed being able to take this time and just enjoy some
relaxing time seeing what others have accomplished this year and hopefully
be inspired to participate next year. she not only provided the book
covers of the pattern sources, but she also gave comments by the creator of
how it was worked and with what threads. it is amazing how many provided
their own designs - so inspirational. it is very inspiring to see what
others create. thanks for being involved and to those who participated, i
hope all will get involved next year. this is sharing lace and enjoying
making something special for another to enjoy 24/7.

i thank all that signed up for the exchange and hope others will plan and
think about being a participant next year. the schedule will be spread out
much like this year so should give everyone an opportunity to enjoy the
involvement, plan and take the time to create. i am always willing to
accommodate your preferences to the best of my ability. just tell me and i
will work it out. thanks again to all. enjoy the opportunity to have eye

Hello Everyone.

Firstly, I would like to thank all those participants in the bookmark

longer. We had an awesome turnout which just adds to the wonderfulness of

This year the schedule will go like this:

March 1-18 Sign Ups

March 20 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

June 1 All bookmarks should be in the mail (receipt 7-10 days
after this)

Same rules apply as the previous bookmark and card exchanges: send in

photo upon receipt and Jenny will make sure everyone is represented
accordingly. We will be following up to make sure we get photos of all of
them so if you think you will have a problem, just let me know. Thanks.

Last year Jenny updated all the patterns submitted to her on the bookmark
and card exchange web pages. If you submit your pattern to her, I am sure
she will be most happy to add that to the accumulation from over the

wonderful anticipation. This is to be FUN not a job or chore. I will be
sending out the exchange partner pairings in a day or so - no later than

my bookmark and what far away place I will be receiving mail from. But if
you were on holiday or didn't see the announcement until the last minute -
join in anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I believe there is time
to get a bookmark made and in the mail by June 1st.

This year the schedule will go like this:

March 1-18 Sign Ups

March 20 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

June 1 All bookmarks should be in the mail (receipt by 7-10 days
after this)

Please send me your name, snail mailing address, email address, how many
bookmark(s) you wish to make and any geographical location(s) you prefer,
if any. Thank you.

If this is your first time, you are going to have lots of pleasure. If you
have been doing this for years, you know how much fun it can be. Any type
of lace and pattern is appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is
"creative license" at its best. Don't be shy - shine.

[lace] Bookmark Exchange Thank You

2016-04-11 Thread Lin Hudren
I would like to take a moment to say I am thankful, amazed and so pleased
at the participation in this year's bookmark exchange. Your participation
has made this the most active exchange according to Jenny's web pages since
2006. It just is one more example of how wonderful and sharing Arachneans
are. It is going to be a lot of work for Jenny but she will show us once
again just how great she is. I cannot wait to see what she does this year
(she doesn't allow me a sneak peek - boo hoo!). Each year she goes one
step further to not only show us what has occurred but to help us learn as
well. Please share kudos with her as you share your projects. Thank you.

Thank you, again, for participating and I hope you will continue to do
so. I know I have expanded my learning and been inspired with the
exchanges of the past. Fortunately bookmarks are 24/7/365 so there are
memories all year long. I use more than one at a time as they go into lace
books, cook books, novels and even magazines. When I open that book or
magazine, I get a treat and remember fondly where that one originated and
can admire the awesomeness of the lacing. Enjoy and please watch for
Jenny's web page availability announcement.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] 2016 Bookmark Exchange

2016-03-24 Thread Lin Hudren
I have been blessed with more participants wishing to exchange bookmarks.
they are the wise ones that know that bookmarks are 24/7 for 365 days of
the year which means fond memories every time you open a book (including
that recipe book). Several people have commented that they have had
computer difficulties in the last weeks so were not able to sign up
previously. So, if anyone wishes to participate now, i am willing to work
it out and make all those new and lovely bookmarks fly thru the mails. if
you have been on the fence or have just not been aware for the Lace Digest
coming in, please give me a chance to allow bookmarks to go elsewhere for
you to have new memories with fondness. just email me at
linhud...@gmail.com and I will make this happen. thanks for your further
consideration.

[lace] 2016 Arachne Bookmark Exchange

2016-03-07 Thread Lin Hudren
Wow, what a wonderful response so far and many days yet to join in the
fun. I wish to thank those who have been responsive so far for your faith
in me doing the job. I hope many more of you will join in the fun. There
is nothing like the sense of accomplishment for making a project happen.
Bookmarks are treasures in life and bring smiles to all who use and/or
admire them and share the pleasure of a gift from afar with those near.

If you are curious, you can go to:
http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2012bookmarks/index.html or
http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2013bookmarks/index.html or
http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2015bookmarks/index.html to view previous
years' exchanges. There are many more browsing opportunities for ideas
and/or just to drool and get inspired. Jenny graciously devotes her time
and energy to allowing all of us to see what, as a group, we
accomplish. If you have not signed up yet, come join in the fun.

As a reminder, this year the schedule will go like this:

March 1-18 Sign Ups

March 20 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

June 1 All bookmarks should be in the mail (receipt by 7-10 days
after this)

Same rules apply as the previous bookmark and card exchanges: send in
name, snail mail address, email address, how many bookmarks you want to
make and any geographical preferences to me at *linhud...@gmail.com
*. After making your bookmark(s) please take a
picture and email directly to Jenny Brandis (je...@brandis.com.au) who once
again is a dear heart and will be posting all on her web site or to me (
linhud...@gmail.com). If you wonder if your partner was able to send in a
photo of her bookmark to you, just send one upon receipt and Jenny will
make sure everyone is represented.

If you have any questions or preferences, please feel free to email me at
linhud...@gmail.com.

This is just too much fun for one person to take by themselves. Come take
a bit of it for yourself. Happy lacemaking.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] 2016 Arachne Bookmark Exchange

2016-03-29 Thread Lin Hudren
All Exchange Partners have been assigned and emails sent out. If you
signed up and did not receive notice of your partner, please contact me
personally (linhud...@gmail.com). I may have typed your email address
incorrectly but I can "reply" to you accurately if I know.

I found during the holidays that there is such a thing in the USA of a
"global stamp" which last year cost $1.15 which I request for my cards and
bookmarks to mail out overseas. Just ask for it rather than have them make
you fill out the forms or even "weigh" the envelope. I use a card as
padding for them. These go for one regular stamp intercontinental as well.

If you still wish to participate, contact me and I will work it out.

I do hope you have fun. Please let me know if your partner has not yet
been responsive and remember to send photos to Jenny Brandis at
je...@brandis.com.au. To see why we share our photos with Jenny, check
these out: http://brandis.com.au/arachne/2012bookmarks/index.html or

Arachneans, it is almost time to be sure your bookmarks are ready to mail.
Please remember to scan or photograph your bookmark before sending it off
in the mail and please send a copy of it to Jenny Brandis at
je...@brandis.com.au. An acknowledgement of Jenny's hard work in your
email of your scan will be greatly appreciated by me. She earns it for her
talented work, thoughtfulness and generosity. If you have mailed it and
did not scan or photo it, please ask your partner to send Jenny a scan or
photograph. If you have received one and are not sure if your partner
scanned it before mailing, please just scan or photo it and send a copy to
Jenny. Better to have two rather than none. Jenny has skills that make
this awesome. Thank all of you for making this the most active exchange so
far. I greatly appreciate your confidence and support in my doings. Any
info you wish to share with Jenny about the bookmark you made will augment
the web pages and possibly teach a few of us a bit more about lace
techniques. This definitely is optional and not required - just a thought
as Jenny makes her web pages more informative each time she gifts us with
her skills.

Dear Gon, i have missed your postings and have enjoyed receiving your
weekly challenges and awesome examples. thank you and please be assured
you are well appreciated. unfortunately, i did not receive your inquiries
and not sure why. we corresponded the time i had difficulty with getting
the example for a couple of weeks in the transition of your changes but you
were most helpful to me. thank you again and, i especially, would greatly
appreciate your continuance.

thanks, Jeri, for your kind words. i have incurred the lack of "please and
thank you" in our daily lives these days. i am gratified, tho, that with
the bookmark exchange, i have been thanked for organizing it. i incurred
the blessing of such a great response this year that it speaks of
appreciation two-fold. it is amazing what these little words do to one's
spirit.

thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experiences. also, a thank
you to those who ask questions as it triggers memory and/or creativity for
me. i mostly respond to individuals and not the group as i am not usually
sharing knowledge - i often wonder if i even have any - but i do try to be
upbeat and positive in all situations and am thankful that the postings
have not been negative in the last months.

[lace] Bookmark Exchange 2016

2016-05-08 Thread Lin Hudren
We are down to the last 4 weeks of the bookmark exchange. If you are
saying "I should have" or "Bummer, I wish I had", send me your snail mail
address (linhud...@gmail.com) and join in the fun. There is still plenty
of time to make a bookmark and mail it off to one who will most assuredly
love to receive it. The exchange is meant to inspire and to enjoy and
share pleasure and inspiration. It is a way to plan, work and gift to
another like-minded planner, creator and giver. I eagerly await hearing
from you members of a wonderful group.

thank all of those who have signed on earlier to share with others and the
pleasure that is in the creativity and the awesome receipt of a gift that
is so unique and awesome. The skies are being filled with bookmarks
winging their way abroad.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] What if?

2016-07-20 Thread Lin Hudren
Who wants to join a "what if" event? my pillow is lonesome. what can i
make and send off to a new home? is there a pumpkin i think i would like
to create but have no one to share it with? maybe that shamrock that
calls? maybe that heart given with love? what about that rainbow? what
have you seen that you would enjoy making but don't have a place to gift
it? let's play. maybe we can get Jenny to share on her web pages.

we are all so talented and have time to create and gift. does anyone want
to play? join in to me and i will host a fun time at linhud...@gmail.com.

2016-07-20 Thread Lin Hudren
well, seems to be an interest. want to make that butterfly, lady bug,
bumble bee, daisy? that little motif that appealed to you but no where to
send? let's play.

send me your name, snail mail address, email address and let's get
something happening. we will send off our fun to another who loves to play
too. lots of time. i guess i should make this a bit formal.

do you think signing up from July 21 to July 31 would work? we can lace
until October 15-30 and mail off on October 30? good for spiders or
pumpkins (gremlins???). Gosh how many fun things can we think up? my
creative juices are flowing. i had best check with Jenny to see if she
will display our fun and creativity. she is so good about showing us what
we do.

waiting to hear from you.

[lace] 2017 Bookmark Exchange

2017-02-25 Thread Lin Hudren
Hello Everyone.

I would like to thank all those participants in the bookmark exchange the
last years. We had an awesome turnout which just adds to the wonderfulness
of Aracheans. Let's let the fun begin again. Bookmarks can be used all
year long so they are cherished all year with fond memories.

This year the schedule will go like this:

March 1-18 Sign Ups

March 20 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

June 1 All bookmarks should be in the mail, please

Same rules apply as the previous bookmark and card exchanges: send in
name, snail mail address, email address, how many bookmarks you wish to
make and any geographical preferences to me at *linhud...@gmail.com
*. After making your bookmark(s) please take a
picture and email directly to Jenny Brandis (je...@brandis.com.au) who once
again is a dear heart and will be posting all on her web site. If you
wonder if your partner was able to send in a photo of her bookmark to you,
just send a photo upon receipt and Jenny will make sure everyone is
represented. We will be following up to make sure we get photos of all of
them so if you think you will have a problem, just let me know. Thanks.

Last year Jenny updated all the patterns submitted to her on the bookmark
and card exchange web pages. If you submit your pattern to her, I am sure
she will be most happy to add that to the accumulation from over the
years. These are much appreciated for inspiration and eye candy. Thank
you.

Any problems, just let me know. If you are going to be late, please let
your partner and myself know. If you have to drop out for some reason,
please personally contact me (linhud...@gmail.com) as soon as possible so I
can ensure everyone has a partner. Thank you.

If this is your first time or you are participating for an additional time,
you are going to have lots of fun. Any type of lace and pattern is
appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is creative license at its
best. Don't be shy. This is your time to shine.

Thanks and enjoy as much as I plan to.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

Re: [lace] Linen Thread Storage

2016-11-14 Thread Lin Hudren
i live in the desert in southern Nevada USA and at the most humid we get to
about 45%. we only get 12" of rain each year (mostly within two months).
storing threads like linen (and cotton) is a challenge so i mostly use
silk and when i need the others, i only order what i need so i don't have
to "store" too much. i have not had any difficulty with cotton so far and
the silk seems to "not care". i think the advice for wrapping is awesome.
we have grit from the winds stirring the grit from the area is a
troublesome consideration for me. i like plastic bags for protection from
this, but they rot easily and have to be replaced. in the dryer climes, i
just open the bags up for a month and replace them. this might not compare
to your area.

[lace] Holiday Lacing

2016-12-23 Thread Lin Hudren
I just completed a bookworm and bead bookmark to gift to an 11 year old
boy. i have been gifting him a bookmark and eBooks for several events a
year in the hopes he will become a reader rather than always playing on the
computer or his Fire. I am easing back into bobbin lace after several
years of watching the covers on my pillows collect dust. it is fun to find
bobbins again i have not used in a very long time. Stormy (my original
mentor for bobbin lacing - and what a fantastic foundation she gifted me in
2000) gave me two new bobbins (see Jenny's web pages) so i am looking to
set something up for when my new outside "great room" is set up for
enjoying lacing in the outdoors while in the desert and having sort of
spring/fall type weather all winter (we don't have but a couple of weeks of
spring and fall each year if we are lucky).

i want to wish everyone a happy holiday season and many blessings for the
New Year.

as an aside, if you subscribe to NetFlix, they have a "movie" that is
called "Fireplace and Melodies for the Holiday Season". it runs for two
hours. i have a 24" television i use as a monitor and in full screen, it
is like having a fireplace in my small environment. there are no lyrics so
it is a nice "background" to visiting. also Amazon sells the 2011 video
for $3.99 USD and offers a couple of others. i prefer this one having
tried the rest. this one is soothing to me.

Enjoy your holidays.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

sending out the exchange partner pairings in a day or so - no later than

[lace] 2017 Bookmark Exchange

2017-04-16 Thread Lin Hudren
I would like to take a moment to say I am thankful, amazed and so pleased
at the participation in this year's bookmark exchange. Your participation
has made this a most active exchange according to Jenny's web pages since
Thank you.

I hope your bookmarks are evolving to your satisfaction. I do so love
making bookmarks because they are gifts that are enjoyed all year long by
yourself and others. I am doing a project I have wanted to do for many
years for two lovely people and their bible study groups. This has been
slow in the doing but I believe will be happily received.

Thank you.

this early. Oh what fun. Mine will be posted this week. It will be a
great time watching the mail from now on.

Once more Jenny has gifted us with another new and wonderful touch. She is
letting us know who is sending in photos of the bookmarks already made.
Please do not feel pressured tho because your bookmarks do not have to be
mailed until "only by June 1st". She is just telling us how her web pages
are developing. What a tease. 😉

Enjoy and please watch for Jenny's web page availability announcement.
Thank you.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] Last Call for 2017 Arachne Motif Exchange

2017-05-16 Thread Lin Hudren
Last call. We are down to the last days for sign ups for the motif
exchange but don't worry if you are a day or so behind. I will make it
happen. Just contact me (*linhud...@gmail.com *) and
it will be worked out. Also, if you are delayed in mailing your motif to
your partner, let your partner and me know so we can take the worry out of
the wonderful anticipation. This is to be FUN not a job or chore. I will
be sending out the exchange partner pairings in a day or so - no later than
5/20 but sooner if able. I am always anxious to know who will be getting
my lace and what far away place I will be receiving mail from. But if you
were on holiday or didn't see the announcement until the last minute - join
in anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I believe there is time to
get a motif made and in the mail by September 1st.

This year the schedule will go like this:

May 1-18 Sign Ups

May 20 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

September 1All bookmarks should be in the mail, please

Please send me your name, snail mailing address, email address, how many
motif(s) you wish to make and any geographical location(s) you prefer, if
any. Thank you. Once you have your motif(s) made, please send a photo to
me (linhud...@gmail.com) with your partner's name to present the array of
motifs flying across the oceans.

If this is your first time, you are going to have lots of pleasure. If you
have been doing this for years, you know how much fun it can be. Any type
of lace and pattern is appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is
"creative license" at its best. Don't be shy - shine. May the lace bug
bite for lots of fun.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali
