Hey all,

I will be moving shortly to the Newport News region of VA. Are their any
mechanics or shops people would recommend in that area?

Thanks

Paul, technically Walnut Grove is not in the Bay Area. (You can get
there from here, but it takes a while.) It is in California's Central
Valley, off of I-5 about halfway between Sacramento and Stockton. I
posted your message on a board that is read by a few folks in those
areas. Hopefully one of them will respond.

Good afternoon all,
Does anyone know where I can get a replacement shifter linkage for a
1988
320i E30 (6 cyl) in Sydney? I have just driven across Sydney with only 2nd
and 4th because my linkage is busted. I am also intrested in getting a short
shifter. I figured that I could do them both at the same time.

Also, can anyone recommend a good suspension setup for the E30.

Thankyou
Peter Hartshorn.

The BMW NA homepage (www.bmwusa.com) currently has a strikingly
unattractive photo of the slab-sided, dame-edna'ed new five series with the
caption "The ALG 2004 Luxury Brand Residual Value Award Winner".

This is the headliner on their homepage? What the heck is an ALG 2004? When
did residual value get top billing for the Ultimate Driving Machine? Is
this the best they can do now? Whatever happened to "Car & Driver Ten Best"
or "Road & Track Car of the Year"?

This is not your father's BMW.

I can't tell if your "What is ALG 2004" question is rhetorical or not, but
to answer the question (if it wants answering), it is the Automotive Leasing
Guide 2004 residual value guide, which is pretty much a leasing industry
standard for residual values. It is actually worth more than a hill of
beans to have a good residual value, as that helps lower payments on leases,
and gives a good indicator to leasees and buyees alike that their BMW
investment is better than, say, a Cadillac investment. I'm no longer in
that industry, so don't have a guide handy anymore, but Cadillac residuals
usually suck (I'd be curious about the cts-v's 36 month residual versus an
M5's), and BMWs have generally been very good.

Cruising around in my 2002 or my E36 M3 or my E30 325i generally nets me
zero acknowldgement from the masses in their silver E46 4 doors or new
fivers. I don't suppose that they really care about the 2002's place in BMW
history. Hell, they don't even notice my friend's E30 M3 with 3 foot-wide
"M" stripes running from the driver side front to the passenger rear. But
they do want a nice payment on their new car - hence BMW touting good
residual values.

To wrap up this diatribe, I don't think you're the target audience anyhow -
you have an M coupe. Then again, neither am I.

And can't we just stop beating up on the styling of newer BMWs? It ain't
that bad....

Jason

I used to own that car (or at least one with the same paint) and was
always shocked that no one even blinked an eye when I drove it around
the SF Bay Area. Until I got to the track or an autocross - that's one
place where leasing residuals don't mean as much.

Still, I already know BMW makes great handling cars; I'd much rather
they win awards for residual value than from a biased source like C&D.
Those results don't mean much in my opinion.

Well, did you proceed to follow the link at the end that proceeded to talk
about residual value and its importance? That link is there for those that
don't understand it.

I for one like the looks of the new 5 series and they handle/drive
amazingly, I could only imagine what a new M5 is like!! (Oh, just so this is
context, I lust after a 1972 2002tii).

Well, I really couldn't give much a hoot about what "Car & Driver" or "Road
& Track" says. It wasn't all that long ago they touted the IS300, those
sales have fallen like a stone from my observations even though it is a nice
car.

Residual value is probably now one of the most important things out there
for the educated car buyer. And, since more and more people lease cars,
particularly expensive cars like BMWs, residual value is even more
important.

Besides, with all the "current styling" bashing, many have decided that the
new cars will never hold their value. ALG begs to differ obviously and BMW
winning that measure reassures people that isn't the case (at least the
leasing companies can offer more attractive leases and take the risk which
is all most of the "new car buyers" care about).

> This is not your father's BMW.

No, my father drove Chevy and GMC. The number of people that bought a 2002
from a dealer is an incredibly small percentage compared to the number of
people that buy new BMWs today.

Rich

Hence, why I said "one of the most important", besides Bill, you are in the
severe minority of new BMW buyers that keep them "forever"....

Later,

Rich - thinks "forever" is a very long time, even E30 radiators don't last
"forever"...

Estoril Blue. My 1990 325i is currently Delphin gray with the usual
peeling hood paint, and also peeling front bumper paint and a
sand-blasted front lower valence. Whadaya think?

I plan to use the car for a few more years for my daily driver, and
then turn it into a dedicated track/autocross car. Maybe I'll even
get a license and go club racing. So I'm not worried about keeping
the original color. I'd prefer to get away from metallic paint.
Estoril is my favorite E30 M3 color. Makes sense, eh?

I'm also thinking of offering up my car to a local vocational school
for body and paint students to use as their school project car. I
should be able to get it done cheaper that way, if not exactly a
perfect job. Anyone have any experience with that? Were you happy
with the results?

Earlier I posted that I'm thinking about painting my car Estoril blue,
and one of my reasons was that I wanted to get away from metallic
paint. Jim Bassett (he of the "purple" M3) pointed out that Estoril
is a metallic color. Now I've admired that color for years, and I've
seen a lot of Estoril cars, but I really had no idea that is was
metallic. But a Google search tells me that Jim is correct.

Crap. Time for Plan B, which will have to include my attempts to get
a better grip on reality.

Scott, that's now TWO votes for Avus Blue (I had made a similar reply
privately).

:-)

Jim Bassett
1998 M3/4 - Techno Violet (first choice would have been Avus, had it been
available)
1993 325is #44 - Alpine White, but could end up Avus some day :-)

Hi All,
Sorry for the waste of bandwidth, but I've finally decided to sell my
M3.

Briefly:
1998 silver/gray sedan with automatic transmission
70,700 highway miles
Asking $18,000

Many details at http://members.rennlist.com/jwelte/BMW_index.html

It deserves to have an owner with a more interesting commute. Mine is 30
highway miles each way, and it just wasn't what the car was designed
for.

Located in Maryland

Thanks,
