Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi UUC'ers! I changed my RSM's this weekend in hope to kill a slight clanking noise when going over bumps from the rear left. Now the noise is even worse, it's heard mostly when going over bumps (very slowly too) or bad roads. It also appears to be mostly coming from the rear left again. That particular shock was a bit more difficult when I wanted to tighten the RSM on it - my Bilstein shocks don't have the square bits at the top to lock them, so I had to just hold the rod with a vice grip while tightening the nut. Could my RSM be loose? I re-tightened the RSM nuts but it didn't help at all. I'm going to replace all the spring pads when I get a chance, but I suspect that won't fix it either. Any hints? Best regards, Pavel '94 E36 320i, M50B20. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Dec 2004 06:57:13 -0500 From: "Marc Plante" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [E36] Clanking got worse after new rear shock mounts? Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hmmm...clanking. Are you using aftermarket brake pads for the first time. They will rattle around in the caliper and sound kind of ominous until you get to know the sound. Check the spare tire well. Is your jack loose? Yes, its rear-right, but sounds can move through the body. Exhaust banging into swaybars, esp if you've lowered the car and changed spacing back there. check your exhaust hangers and make sure it's not moving around too much. that also sounds like a big hollow tube rather than high "clanking" Only other thing of note that's that's rear left might be a stereo amplifier, but those are bolter in place pretty well Marc Plante E36 M3/4 60k E36 325i, 220k (Gone) Vienna, VA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pavel Tcholakov" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [UUC] [E36] Clanking got worse after new rear shock mounts? Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Last thought...I had a problem like that and found it by opening the trunk, grabbing the corners of the open trunk and shaking the car from side to side while a friend lay down by the back bumper listening and watching. If your suspension isn't too stiff you should be able to generate a fair amount of motion and possibly generate the sound. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I think it's the exhaust hitting against something - thanks for pointing that out, didn't even cross my mind. (Doh!) The car is lowered approx 1.5" at the rear, either that has changed the spacing or I hit the exhaust on something and some of the rubber supports have displaced/torn. If I shake the exhaust tip left-to-right by hand, I hear something very similar to what I hear inside the car. Otherwise I'm confident it's not the jack or stuff in the boot, though point taken about perceived location of sound - could be deceiving. It's not pads either, the current set has been there for almost a year now. Cheers, Pavel On Tue, 07 Dec 2004 06:57:13 -0500, Marc Plante <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hmmm...clanking. I've got aftermarket pads in our '93 325is and the rattling going over bumps drives me insane. I would say it's dependent on the pad you're running. I believe all street pads have clips that should fit snuggly inside the caliper piston (the inboard pad anyway). Race pads for the most part don't have any clips and will rattle, squeal, and dust like nobody's business. I have Porterfield R4S pads on my '93 325is and other than a little squeal on the rare ocassion are pretty much quiet. I have Hawk HP+ on my E30 and other than a bit more squealing are also rattle free. Both sets of pads have clips and I installed anti-squeal shims on the HP+ pads. Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I hate to even bring it up, but a good place to check is the subframe where the differential mounts to. I have seen at least two 325's stroll through the shop here (one I happened to own, and let it get so bad diagnosing the problem as "other things" that I had to order most of the mounts and re-weld them on...) Bmw sells an M re-enforcement kit for that area, which is as weak, but less common than the shock towers. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Dec 2004 08:43:38 -0600 From: "Andrew Harkonen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "UUCDigest" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Carfax please Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I've got a line on a '95 touring that I hope to look at this week, does anybody have an active carfax account to run this VIN? Yes Luk, the history has been that BMW's introduction of a new cabrio version lags the new hardtop version by a year or two. The E36 cabrio was not introduced (at least in the US) until the 1994 model year and BMW continued to sell E30 Cabrios alongside E36 coupes and sedans through the 1993 model year. The exact date of introduction of the E36 models varied by country.
