Just installed Hawk HP+ and new rotors on my E34 M5 in
the rear. They are squealing like a stuck pig even
after a day at Laguna Seca. They were even making
noise during hot laps which is quite an accomplishment
in a 3800lb car. The previous race pads I ran, Mintex
Ctech, squealed a little but nothing like this. Is
this normal or should I put some non-squeal goop on
them (I hate the stuff)? Any other tips would be
appreciated.

My experience says that is normal.  I found the aluminum stick on shims 
work better then the goop.

They squeal like hell on my E36 M3 too with light braking, they seem
to quiet down a bit if you push on the middle pedal harder.  They stop
pretty well though so I just live with it.

Hawks require a liberal globbing of anti-squeel.  The normal coat I put 
on them when first installed was insufficient so I globbed it on 
heavily, as recommended on the digest back in September, and it finally 
cured the problem.

     The limits of the adaptive system for the stock MAF can be exceeded
by, for instance, a larger HFM tube with higher fuel pressure.
     The system adapts to the greater airflow and higher fuel pressure
to be rich enough at wot, however the CE comes on due to not being able
to run _lean enough on part throttle cruising.
     A side effect of installing the larger HFM tube was that the ICV
went hyperactive, shooting the idle way too high immediately on cold
start.  Problem was the system was now mis-reading as way too lean and
shooting extra gas to try to compensate, while it was actually the
metering at low airflow that was incorrect for the actual airflow
through the tube.

     To deal with hyperactive ICV sutuations where the problem is the
metering (due to larger air tubes or bored out throttles), not the ICV,
here's stupid little trick that some of you will laugh at, but is
effective in some cases nevertheless:
Put a washer with a small inner hole (1/4"?) into the inlet hose just
before the Idle Control Valve.  That will restrict the air flow to the
ICV, so that the adaptive system will not pump as much fuel.  After a
few starts and stalls the adaptive system will lean itself again at idle
and the system will now use less fuel while the engine is cold.

Anyone here ever use a coolant filter on their BMW?  I
stumbled across the following links:

Whenever I've drained the coolant, it usually looks very
clean - with no obvious chunks that a filter would catch.
None of my cars are that old, however, so I wondered if

Ouch.  I've heard varied reports about GC's customer service, from really
nice things (someone who ordered their coilover kit getting a lot of
pre-sales help to figure out what they needed) to bad things.  When I called
them, they seem a bit rushed and busy, but gave me the info I needed.
Perhaps I caught them on an OK day?

It's hit or miss.  I'm not as dissatisfied with them as Rich but I
definitely see where he's coming from.  I really like their products
and more importantly their pricing so I keep going back and suffer
through the customer service problems.  Best suggestion I've heard yet
is to order their stuff through Bimmerworld, now *their* customer
service should be the benchmark for aftermarket suppliers.  GC does
very well with California residents but for some reason not so well
with folks outside of that state.  I've heard lots of reasons and that
their working on improving so I'll still give them a chance.  I had a
GC suspension on my E30 M3 and really liked it, now I have one for the
E36 sitting in the garage, I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with that as
well.

My first setup on an e30 race car.
Second setup for e36 race car.  Actually sourced it though Bimmerworld.
Completely agree with your comment on Bimmerworld customer service,
outstanding!

I've been running a set on my 99 M3 for about 6-8 months now - obtained from
Rob at UUC Motorworks on kind a of trial basis. I could not be happier with
them - they are infinitely cleaner than the OEM pads, no noise issues or
other bad things whatsover in general street driving. Compared to the PBR
Deluxe pads that I have on my 528, they are almost as clean, leaving a very
slight dust after two weeks of driving (less than one day worth on the
OEMs).

I installed them using new Brembo rotors. Overall I'd say they are somewhat
more agressive than the PBRs, based on observing rotor wear.

Sorry to change the subject but that caught my eye.

Any of you guys have experience with these pads?  I have a co-worker
that asked me about brake pads for his vehicle and this came up as a
possible replacement, he's unhappy with the stock ones.

So how are these Akebono pads in terms of dust? noise? performance?

The other choice that came up was EBC pads and since I think those are
junk I told him to stay away.

88 325is on Hawk HP+ (definitely dusty and noisy, I love 'em)

don't have any specific experience myself, but recall that our
esteemed list owner has previously mentioned them as being
very effective.  Tire Rack sells them (and probably UUC if they're
available for their BBK) and they appear to be pretty reasonably
priced.  the E36 M3 pads (also work for lots of other BMW's)
are $68/axle.  if they dust lots less, it sounds like a good idea
to me.
