During the last day's discush on protecting wheels during storage , did
anyone else notice how the mission statement expanded ?? It started out
protecting some wheels tires from dirt and ended up guarding them from
ravaging dogs ??
The UUC Digest is acquiring the same bad habits as the Pentagon !!....we
start out with a black plastic bag and end up with a custom fabricated
stainless steel container with titanium locks and hinges (it's gotta be
rust-resistant ) containing shelves made from Hastelloy with Neodymium
tiedowns and a hydraulically powered lid having gold-plated switches to
activate a hydraulic motor driven by unique lithium storage batteries
.Viva Pentanonsensis .
Bill Proud Cogito, ergo Vroom !!

"Doesn't your wife lug around the spare wheels and tires Gary??"

Sure she is, in her white blouse with black skirt. Next she is going to mow
the lawn and then
wash the garage floor again right after making another batch of home brew...

Later,

Rich - doesn't think Donna or her garage looks quite like that when she is
lugging around her
spare wheels...

To keep the sexist stereotypes going,, maybe she's the one who sews the
wheel covers too. Maybe its her company and her idea, after she threw
out the lazy husband who refused to mow the lawn in the first place? LOL.

They would look like that, briefly, if they had to for advertising. :)
Fortunately, the spares wheels are in the basement, which is (marginally)
cleaner than the garage.

I was thinking anyone with 4 tires and 1 lawnmower in his garage never gets
his hands dirty. My wife doesn't lug tires voluntarily.

Perhaps the woman is the owner of the tires, and the garage.

Re: off season wheel storage

Brian,
Why not hang them from the ceiling for your garage? I took some chain
and a couple of 8' fence posts and made a tire rack in no time flat. I
looped the chain around the bottom rung of the garage roof trusses (had
to poke 4 holes in the drywall ceiling to do this) and then 'sandwich'
bolted the posts to the chain so they would not slip. The tires 'nest'
between the posts neat, tidy and out of the way.

Home Depot, ~$40 invested in chain and posts. Probably even cheaper
with Harbor Freight chain! About an hour later I have a tire rack for 8
tires/wheels, enough to store my winter wheels in the summer and my
track/summer tires in the winter. You could probably hang a gorilla
from this tire rack. I have to grab a ladder to get them down, but they
are out of the way for the other 364 days and 20 hours of the year! No
worries about dogs, dirt, theft, etc.
I can send a few pictures to anyone that might be interested. It's
pretty simple really.

Cheers,
Chet Dawes

I'm looking for a wheel storage bag that will protect my summer wheels
from
dust and dirt while they sit waiting for summer to arrive again. I know
BMP
was giving away a storage bag like this a few months ago when you bought
a
wheel and tire set, but I don't know of anywhere to buy just the bag.
Anyone have any sources?

Thanks,
Brian

This thread is about dead (bang--there, got it!), but...

The most critical aspect of off-season wheel storage is lighting. Most
prefer pin-spots, but I prefer the aesthetics of gentle floods.

Aimed slightly off-center, of course, just like 99.9% of
owner-installed "fog" lights.

If you have to protect them against a peeing dog then I'd *definitely* go
with watertight, disposable trash bags!

But I like these better than the vinyl tire covers I'm using. They're
cheaper, washable and have handles. Just the thing to keep those vulcan
tires in... <g>

The only thing that keeps me from buying them is that
the rims are exposed. brake dust encrusted rims does
not go well with leather.

They are probably made that way so they can be advertised as "one size fits
all". Wonder if they'd fit my 18x11's?

But make sure you pull the bags tight and don't leave anywhere for
liquid to puddle. God help you if you get a puddle of half-evaporated
week-old dog pee spilled on your shoes. Ask me how I know. No wait,
don't ask.

32 41 1 092 982 is an E36/Z3 power steering hose, not E30 coolant.

11 53 1 289 257 is expansion tank to water pump on pre 9/87 E30 M20
