I've been studying the ETM for my 1990 325i. It does not show a
circuit for heated locks. Was it no longer available on the '90s? It
does show heated seats. Wouldn't both have come as some kind of "cold
weather" package?

Oops, didn't realize that.

I live in the bay area, CA. I took part of a Driver's Education event at
ButtonWillow, CA.

I've read my insurance policy from cover to cover, and I understand the
exclusions.

Thanks again ---

Ziv,

Laws regulating insurance differ, sometimes significantly, from state to
state. I suggest you repost and indicate which state and city you are in --
this would help with narrowing down the field.

Hi,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a lawyer that would help me fight an

Ziv,

Initially denying your claim is probably standard procedure for any accident on
a track. It all depends on the circumstances of the school, the language in
your policy, and CA law. My insurance company did the same thing when I had an
incident at a driving school at Watkins Glen in 1999. I was shocked as I was
certain the school did not fall under the exclusion for "racing or practice or
preparation for racing" in my MA policy which the school clearly was not - no
lap times and passing only on designated straights when pointed by. Aside from
not timing laps the school went so far as to prohibit participants from timing
their own laps to avoid the possibility that it might be construed as a "timed
event" which IIRC was part of the language defining racing in the exclusion.
When I filed the claim I gave the insurance company contact information for the
organization which ran the school to verify the nature of the event, but they
never contacted them. Convinced that I wa!
s in the right I pursued it and eventually the insurer paid the claim.
Fortunately in my case I didn't have to get a lawyer involved. Of course I've
paid back every cent of the claim (and then some) in increased premiums since.
Depending on the extent of the repairs and whether or not you can afford to pay
for them out of pocket it might be less expensive in the long run not to make a
claim, especially once you start adding legal fees to the total. I don't know
about CA law, but in MA if the insurer does not pay a claim they can't raise
your rates for that accident so that may or may not be a consideration as well.
In any event I wouldn't let the denial of your claim go unchallenged if you
decide that's in your best interests. You might want to try the National
Motorists Association. http://www.motorists.org/Attorneys/attorneyindex.html
They have listings of attorneys that specialize in traffic ticket defense. Not
exactly your situation, but there are probably some that are knowledgeable in
auto insurance law as a related area, or can point you in the right direction.

Good Luck!

Just to prove that no good deed goes unpunished....

This morning I took my trusty 12V compressor, powered from
the cigar lighter, to pump up the wife's tires (E46 330xi)
which I'd noticed were a bit low. I've used this compressor
for years, on half a dozen cars, and it worked just fine once
again. BUT the damned cigar lighter wouldn't relinquish the
plug once I was done!

To make a long story short, I had to rip the connector apart
and the center pin from my plug is still embedded in the cigar
lighter. The fusebox was not obvious in the top of the glove
box (what the owner's manual said) - is it really there, and
how do I gain access? And how difficult is it to replace the
cigar lighter jack?

What a PITA!

It's a wonderful thing. Ten's of thousands of times better than Mime and
HTML garbage. It's email, not a picture show.

Bad Light Control Module, box marked LKM in the fuse box. Probably bad
solder joints on the relay for passenger low beam. Resolder the entire box,
or replace it.

Brake lining light comes on with either a ground signal, OR an open circuit.
It's not hard to trace. Make sure you're not fixing only one of two
problems. Do you have an old sensor? If so, cut the head off, twist the
wires together and plug into the harness at front, then rear, to see if the
light goes out. It's not unknown to have a bad sensor that is good
visually.

Pretty standard AC whine. You could try a 22,000uF filter capacitor that
BMW developed for this problem in E32, E34 and E31. The BMW part number was
12 31 9 059 399, but it is no longer available through the US parts stream.
An equivalent could be found somewhere, I'm sure. The service bulletin
number referencing this problem is 65 02 92.

If the production date of the car is before 9/89, you might also want to
check the routing of the CD changer data cable. Even if a CD changer is not
installed, the factory routed the harness too close to some nasty stuff and
it picks up interference. Re-routing the cable is possible, and was done by
the factory as of 8/89 production.

Brett advises:

"The glass pulls off the motor drive assembly with some effort. Not

Brett, is this because of a danger of breaking the plastic behind the
mirror or mirror?

I'm in sunny Calif. so this might not be an issue.

The plastic clips, which are part of the glass assembly. The extreme cold
we're seeing right now prevents any work on anything plastic or rubber,
until the car has sat inside for 5 or 6 hours.

Manuel, CalTrans regularly pays claims for car damage due to potholes and
other road maintenance issues. This applies to state-maintained roads.
Get it fixed, and send a copy of the bill to CalTrans, along with a
description of the time/date/location of the pothole incident. If not a
state-maintained road, try sending the bill to the city/county road
maintenance department. I don't know if they will pay or not.

I have info on wheel repair shops in the Bay Area, but none in So. Cal.
Hopefully someone else can help here.
