Is the megaphone type siren on the passenger side inner fender on the E36's
a common failure point of the system? The unit has a BMW part sticker on it
but the alarm system is not reacting to the chrip option nor does it go off
when hitting the window. I'll ohm it out this weekend but wanted to get
some insight into its operation first.

Thanks- Kevin

Hello All

Sorry for the cross post to those of you subscribing to both uucdigest
and the E39 group lists.

I recently had all 4 of my original shadow chrome wheels replaced
under warranty, as the finish was deteriorating. Other than some dark
blotches on the wheels, they were perfect. Well, I'd had the new
wheels on for no more than a week when when I parallel parked and
didn't notice that a chuck of concrete had fallen from the curb into
the street. The result was a 3x0.5 cm scratch on the right rear wheel.
A local shop thought they could fix it so I gave them a try. They did
indeed do a nice job of refinishing the wheel, but unfortunately, to
my eye, the finish is not an acceptable match to the remaining wheels.
It's very slightly darker and has slightly less gloss than the
original shadow chrome. So I bit the bullet and bought a new rear
wheel.

So...if anyone has a need for an barely used (less than 1000 miles)
O.E. E39 M5 rear wheel, in perfect condition save the finish that
doesn't quite match, make me a reasonable offer (any M5 owners with
one bent rear wheel who wants to powdercoat their wheels?)

well, I have heated locks in my '89 325i and can't find them in the ETM
either :)

I also have the cold weather package (heated mirrors, washer jets, seats)
but I think you can have the lock heaters OR the interior light delay
gizmo.. not both. Do you have that?

if you lift the handle the interior lights are supposed to come on for X
seconds OR
if you lift and hold the handle, the lock heater is supposed to heat up

the lock heater is a resistor attached to the C clip which holds the lock
cylinder to the door skin.. mine never worked and I couldn't figure out
where it was wrong. The local garage said that almost none of them work,
that some of them stuck ON and got really freakin' hot melting stuff inside
the door during the summers

The car in question has an interior light delay, assuming it is
supposed to keep the light on for about 10 seconds after you enter the
car and close the driver's door. But lifting the exterior door handle
does nothing if the door is locked. No light, no lock heat, nada. So
I may not have the delay to which you refer.

Scott

Sorry for the cross post.

Does anyone know what the part numbers of the deflectors on the underside
of the car (both left and right sides), just in front of the rear wheels
and just behind the rear jack points? I can't seem to find them on the ETK
and the parts guy I spoke to was useless.

TIA,
Steve

They don't show by an intuitive search. Try:

I don't have any write-ups or pics. IIRC it is fairly straight forward. The
only issue I remember having was the disconnecting of the steering rack for
removal/installation of the pan. I don't remember if the Bentley told you to
or not, but I couldn't remove or reinstall without the diconnection of the
steering rack.

Also...I think depending on mileage and your concerns, it may be recommended
to replace the oil pump while you are in there. I also believe it would be a
good time to helicoil the oil pan drain if it needs that sort of treatment.
(I did neither.)

Ziv..

Brian Daley's post was very much on point...
Please drop me a note offline so I can see a copy of your policy..
On or offline... please answer the following..

Was this a DE or a lapping day or other?
Is the car in street form or is the interior removed and race seats
etc. installed?

As Brian mentioned, generally, a fair amount of education is needed so that
the handling claim adjuster understands the nature of the event...
Provided
none of the exclusions were met, the car was streetable, there was no lap
timing, and the event was not a race or preparing to race, there should be
coverage.

I have a Peake reset tool that has worked flawlessly on
my 1991 318is for years, but it won't reset my 1999 323is.
I've used it on my '91 after the last attempt on my '99,
so I know the tool still works.

Any ideas?

BTW, I know most '99s are E46, but the 2-door remained
E36 until MY00...

Thanks,

Steve

Sorry, no idea. A quick scan of the Peake web site doesn't provide any
clues, but I didn't look all that hard.

Maybe give Peake Research a call/email?:

I'm just worried about banging away at some hard to remove part and
having the truck slide off a jackstand. The convenience part does appeal
to me as well.

If you're banging it hard enough to have it slide off the jackstands,
you're banging it hard enough to shove it off a lift as well (and its
higher up on a lift so it can fall further... :-)

Seriously, there are no safety reasons not to use a jack/jackstands vs. a
lift. If anything, they'd be safer.

Of course, if you put the jackstand in a stupid place, it might fall off.
That same is true (and moreso) for a lift though.

I am looking for performance rod bolts for my race car M52 2.8l engine and
for an E34 M5.
I don't seem to find any companie making them.

ARP has only the Euro rod bolts and they don't fit either application.
Raceware Engineering in MI told me that they don't do any rod bolts for BMW,
only main and head studs.

Should I just get the OEM rod bolts and finish my engine???

Thanks.

The rear tires on my E36 have cupped ever since I lowered the car (usual
H&R/Bilstein setup). It's time for new tires, and with that probably a good
time for a four-wheel alignment (somebody with better gear than I have in my
garage). I'm wondering if while we're down there this might make for a good
time to R&R the RTABs (car has 91K on the clock)? Anybody got an opinion as
to whether it makes sense to just blindly do this? And does anybody have a
recomendation for a good source/manufacturer (street use)?
