It's not domestic, it's a Holden Monaro with the gas tank moved to the front of the trunk. > With struts in front, and semi trailing arms in the rear, it is basically an > E30 level of chassis technology. Not bad, but the devil is in the details, > which I have no information. (Before getting too smug, note the E36 has the > same rear suspension setup as a 1963 Corvette) The Commodore/Monaro family is basically stretched early '90s Omega underbits with stretched late '90s Omega (read Cadillac Catera) sheetmetal. It's better than anything GM's got anywhere else in the world excepting the Sigma bits under the CTS/STS. Note that the Monaro/GTO rear suspension is basically what Lotus did for the '91 Lotus Carlton/Omega - still somewhere in the list of the fastest half-dozen production sedans ever built. '90 Omega semi-trailing arms plus a set of toe-control links (so it *is* a step forward over E30/E34 practice.) The front suspension was mostly redone by Holden. It's an exceptionally good car overall - not perfect, but very good - and the '04s are a bargain. > For a lot less money, you can get a '98-'02 Camaro. The downsides to that > are you also get a lot less car and you have to wear your hair in a mullet. And hire someone to follow you around with a broom to sweep up the bits that fall off. A very cost-effective design very poorly executed. > Peformance aside, have you actually seen this car? > UUUUUUGLY. To each their own, for me it's on a par with the E46 and a hell of a lot better than anything BMW's released since - it's a hell of a lot more tasteful than an E60 or E65 or that abominable tacky 6-thing. I'd buy a Cadillac CTS-V ($42K 5000-mile demo) over a GTO but that's because I'm a four-door guy and the V-car's chassis tuning (not to mention the brakes) is just unbeatable. I'd buy a CTS-V over any current BMW product, frankly. Looking forward to the M2, at least. Love it. As the less than 15mpg I'm averaging and the quickly wearing tires show. Sounds great too right out of the box. It has it quirks, but for 30K less than an M5 and probably equal performance I like it. Plus all the go fast bits are 1/3 the price of BMW stuff. As my wife says "The 540i has more finesse, the Caddy is just edgy." I was very interested in this car... ...up until I saw the curb weight. Are there reasonable ways to get the weight down? Does the car drive as heavy as it specs out as? Also (since this would be a daily driver), what sorta gas mileage & gas grade requirements are there? Mark (a discount "lowly" 350hp would be fine for me! :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:33:13 -0500 From: Don Stevenson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'[email protected]'" <[email protected]> Cc: "'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: E30 Ignition Wires Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: E30 Ignition Wire Recommendations >Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >I have a all stock 88 325is I need to replace the >wires as they are beginning to fatigue. I would be curious what "beginning to fatigue" means? Does the car run poorly? Does is not start after a rainstorm? Can you see sparks around the wires while looking under the hood with the engine running when it is dark out? I have two e30 325IS cars, one of them has 190K on it with the original wires and it runs fine. Also you price of $115 for a stock Bosch set sounds a little low, are you sure this is the wire set for the 325I/IS with the impulse sensor wire? At any rate if you really need a wire set I would stick with OEM as the after market wire sets will probably be inferior to OEM and there will be no extra performance to be had by going with a "high performance" wire set. I have not driven a GTO. But, I've looked a couple over. Exterior styling is bland, but sometimes bland equals stealth who knows? The interior looked very well executed and was quite attractive. 350-400 horsepower is nice. So if it needs some after market suspension work and so on, what's so different than what we all do to our e30/e36/e34 rides? They are made with a variable pitch stainless wire wrap around the core and have a higher conductivity than conventional wires. Easy fit, very inexpensive compared to Bosch, long lasting, high quality. Some styles don't have button connectors, so you can crimp the ends down to snap on at the distributor cap. These connect right to the spark plugs, so you won't need the factory plug resistors. hth, Barry Nick Ortwein wrote: >I have a all stock 88 325is I need to replace the >wires as they are beginning to fatigue. He is using a Snap-On Modis scanner, the code number on the scanner is #111 (not sure if that number is unique to that type of scanner or if it's a generic number).
