Celissa,

I don't think you are getting ripped off at all. Most dealers in my
area (Chicago)charge a minimum of $125 per hour with a one hour
minimum for repairs plus the cost of parts. So really, $94 including
parts doesn't seem so bad. The problem in this case is that you are
taking the car to a dealer for such trivial repairs that you could
have done yourself for the cost of the parts (probably close to $30
for a foglight bulb and a DOME light bulb). IMO your perceptions of
what repairs should cost you are a little low. For reference, I do
all repairs myself on my cars, changing these bulbs is a 5 minute job
at the most.

Regards

In the corner of the small vented rectangle of the HVAC control is a small
round section. What is this? Is this an IR sensor that reads some surface
temp and uses that as well as air ambient to set temperature operation?

I believe it is an ambient air temp sensor, yes.

Me too, I just rely on my super chromatic peril-sensitive sunglasses.

I replaced a headlight on my e39 just a few days ago. $11 at Kragen
and I had it plugged in and working in 1 minute. It doesn't get any
easier than these newfangled quarter-turn pop-in light bulbs. Just
gotta remember not to touch the glass part of the bulb.
Of course a fog or dome light is going to require a bit more work to
replace, but probably not much.

I hear those are back-ordered at Ju-Janta for weeks.

So, Harvey, I'm assuming you did buy chains/cables in
preparation for the predicted snow, and if so, what
did you choose?
Jon

In CA, it is law that to go to those areas in the winter, you must
carry "chains". As this was essentially a one time trip, I was able to
borrow a set of cables from a fellow BMW owner here in the bay area.
They appear to be "garden variety" that according to the label on the
storage box, fit my tires. Had I been unable to borrow, I guess I
would have bought something similar.

Jon, you thinking about chains in BOS? Consider a set of studded Hakkas if
it's that bad

Chains are nice if you're in consistent deep snow, but they're a tooth
rattling, painful experience on anything even close to bare roads. You're
restricted to relatively low speeds. They're also a PIA to get off of rear
wheels. If you've got a ski house up a sketchy road (friend had one above Mad
River in VT) I could see using them to get up that hill after storms, but
they're a fairly specialized tool.

You don't have to worry about the BMWCCA, the whole city is a party for GP
weekend. Every block has a sponsor throwing a block party at night. You are
in for a treat. I went last year for the 1st time, and am going again.

I am really enjoying this thread as it brings back memories...

Several years ago I used to instruct in a 1992 525i 5-speed w/Bilsteins, H&Rs,
M5 wheels w/Conti street tires, and a JC chip. Never, ever got a point by on
the first straight after I caught someone (or if I did, they'd mash the
throttle expecting me to power by). I fondly remember one P-car event where I
was in their advanced session as a student. Those guys really hated it when
they found out it was merely a 2.5 liter grocery getter and not an M5. Some of
them required me to fully fill their mirrors in the braking zone to get their
attention (brake off-line once and they pay attention!). Rude and risky, but
effective. FWIW, the school was a bit more loosey-goosey than a Pacific Region
CCA school.

My wife used to drive our former E30 325iS as an A student. E36 M3's were
rather reluctant to let her pass. Her instructor had her slingshot along side
a particular offender at which point he turned sideways in the passenger seat
and gave the international "what's your problem" arms up/shoulder shrug to the
M3. A sheepish point-by materialized! A flapping blond pony tail from under
the helmet added to the fun she had! A quick instructor to instructor
conversation with the offending car's instructor after the session ended the
problem. My wife, who now instructs, pulls her students into the pits after
two missed point by opportunities to 'discuss' their lack of awareness of their
surroundings (you don't want this conversation -- trust me).

I really like letting a faster car by so I can learn from them. Once I find
out where they are faster, I can work up to their speed. I learned a ton by
doing this. Doesn't happen so often now... ;-) If you find yourself with
Margaret Cheng's Spec Miata in your mirrors, let her by and follow! I don't
think she ever uses her brakes!

I fully understand Lee's complaint. It is no fun being held up (although I do
work on my vision when I'm in traffic). I too have found the pull into the
pits to get space tchnique to only work for about 2 laps before I'm right back
behind the offending blocker. My suggestion is to talk to the chief steward or
chief instructor and complain. They need to enforce their rules (i.e., don't
hold up traffic) and start black flagging the offending vehicle. Not doing
that leads to rude or unsafe behavior (just like I did above).

Great thread.

Cheers,

____________

Heh-heh. One technique that works really well... Show 'em your videotape.
I have a camcorder running, and when the offending suspect (or steward)
watches 10 minutes of bumper-following action, it gets pretty hard to argue
against....

No track experience in cars, but lots of motorcycle time from way back
(exact number of years classified).

There are two kinds of people that you share the track with:

1. A-holes--those who are going too slow and won't let you by.

2. Morons--those who pass you. Hey, they must be going at an unsafe
speed if they're going faster than me!
