I would never buy a tire with a 450 treadwear rating except to keep the wheels from hitting the ground, it shows they were going for treadlife above all else. (Yeah, I know, treadwear ratings aren't a basis for comparison across brands, blah blah blah...but it's still proven to be a reasonable standard for evaluation.) > They even threw in the mount and balance, as I bought 4 of those > tires and a set of wheels for the Infiniti from Tire Rack through > them at the same time. How many miles on that Infiniti? Done the cam-chain guides yet? Upper front control arms? Yours is a '96, so it has the de-VVTed motor (Nissan for some reason couldn't get the OBD-II working with the 'real' exhaust-VANOS VH45DE as used from '90-95 so they ripped it out in '96), not sure if that changes anything, the earlier engines are beautiful hardware except for that 110K-mile-life cam-chain guides that if they break they lunch your engine. <and just to get everything covered in one response> > I just bought a set of Bilstein Tourings (OE-like ride) for my GF car for > $275 shipped to my door, here in Germany! I think this mainly has to do with cheap tires being made for people who buy primarily treadlife, just use really hard rubber and throw it out the door, it'll keep the wheels from hitting the ground as long as you don't ask it to do much real work. I do not see how you can go wrong with that. > > Bilstein Tourings are Sachs/Boge, right? I ppicked up a set of those for "Project El Cheapo", the '85 528e that followed me home a few years ago. The Bilstein TCs had just been released, and a distributor we know gave me a discounted price I could not pass up to get some feedback. Nevertheless, I think they were stil a little more than the amazing pricing that Monroe put on their (now discontinued) E36 setup. On physical examination, they didn't say Sachs/Boge anywhere, they had Bilstein stamped on the bodies... but also "made in Hungary" (NTTAWT) whereas other Bilsteins are German-made. Interesting thing about the TCs was that they still have Bilstein's lifetime warranty... but instead of repairing your old dampers, they simply send you new ones. Quite simply, I found them to be a hell of a bargain. Coupled with a set of sport springs we did for that E28 and a "massive overkill" set of S-03s, it rode very well and handled shockingly well. http://www.robertlevinson.com/528e/images/17_three_quarter.jpg With the 528e's power level and this setup, you could've glued the gas pedal to the floor and handled any curves or corners. Had them about 8 months or so before the car went to a new home, can't say that I noticed any change in the TCs' performance over that period. - Rob Please let me know if I may be of further assistance. - Rob Levinson UUC Motorwerks * 908-874-9092 * http://www.uucmotorwerks.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2006 16:33:19 -0400 (GMT-04:00) From: Maverick <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 318ti <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, UUC <[email protected]> Subject: No backul/reverse lights? Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> At least for ATE calipers, there will be three numbers across the caliper on the outward side: BMW xx/xx/xxx. I forget what the first number is for, but the second and third refer to rotor dimensions. For example, the E32 750 front calipers say BMW 60/28/302, where 302 is the diameter of the rotor in mm and 28 is the thickness. If you have a source for rotor dimensions of various models perhaps you can use that information to figure out what car they came from. -tammer <--providing only a bit of the relevant info, sorry --- Maverick <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > How do you figure out what calipers or carriers you have > in your hand? Here are some comments I've seen recently on a motorcycle forum: Chen-Shins, aka Barracuda's, aka JC Whitney no-name house-brand, aka Maxxums: the crappiest, cheapest tires ever. Use only if you are showing threads and are in starving college student mode; expect no handling or stopping capabilities... the devil's spawn and should only be used on 250cc and lower bikes when travelling through the third world (like you find yourself in rural Bagaladesh) and no real tires are available... very thinly carcassed bias tires, with lousy traction and horrendous handling. About the only nice things to say is that they are pre-balanced at the factory, so mounting them doesn't require much, and they are patchable easily (thin rubber punctures easier). So at least their motorcycle tires fit the "cheap bastage" theme you're pursuing on your E32. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2006 10:26:10 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [email protected] Subject: <E36> Headlight renewal Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Is there a way to replace the polycarbonate headlight cover on the US E36's with the euro glass cover? If so, where is a source for just the glass? There was an ad that used to apear in the Roudel for glass replacement lenses but I think it was only for E32/E38's. I know the euro lights can be retrofitted to the US cars, but has anyone had any success doing this with a Dinan CAI? I've heard conflicting information on this. (Thus the need for questions above).
