Good point, but the belt, idler and tensioner were replaced last summer.
I will look into this, though, b/c it's just nice to have everything
functioning properly, old car or not.

David makes a legitimate point regarding the thermostat. Even if the
thermostat is in good working order, the misplacement of the O ring
can cause it to stick. The thermostat sits flush with the housing,
then the O ring, then the cover.

A few ideas...

Have we determined if the engine is actually overheating? Just
because the temp gauge says so doesn't mean it is so. Temp senders do
fail. If you're unsure of what a hot engine feels like, crack the
bleed screw and see what comes out when the gauge is in the red. A
50/50 mix will boil and froth out of the screw by the time the gauge
legitimately hits the 3/4 mark; the coolant can also be heard boiling
in the system.

As in all facets of life, we can't disregard our friend Mihaly
Csikszentmihalyi and flow, even as it relates to coolant. If the
engine is actually overheating: the lower radiator hose should be
lukewarm, not dead hand cold. There's a noticeable difference.

In terms of coolant return: the largest restriction isn't in the line
itself, but in the expansion tank. Winfred Dixon and others advise
using a small bit to drill out the hole. In my service work, I've had
good success in using compressed air to clear both the return line and
the expansion tank passage and have never found a need to widen the
expansion tank hole.

Best, Whit

No idle issues (although it's starting just little hard after sitting
for 2.5 weeks, slowly getting better). In fact it seems smoother now
w/the new chain tensioner. Sure is nice to listen to in the morning.

My '87 325i is back to making a fairly loud ticking noise. Ok, "back to" is
perhaps not the right phrase as it it has always made a fairly distinctive
ticking. I believe this is in the category of "they do that", but this is
different.

I know the M20 engine has traditionally sounded like a 6 cylinder Singer
sewing machine as a result of the non-hydraulic valve train. Some time in
the past mine developed a much more ragged sound that got louder and more
violent as the RPM increased. I eventually found that a failing oil pump had
wiped the cam and rockers. I replaced the pump, cam, and rockers and all was
well.

Well, several years later it developed(?) a new ticking. It sounds similar
to the above case (meaning light metalic sound) but has several important
differences. First, it is variable. At idle it is pronounced, but not too
bad. It gets louder up to about 2000 RPM, then it seems to diminish. By 3000
RPM I can't hear it anymore. Curiously, I discovered that it is far worse
under light engine loads. If I am going up a steep hill holding 2000 RPM it
goes away. If I am comming down the hill holding 2000 RPM it is ticking
away. Likewise, on level ground, if I am holding 2000 RPM it is ticking, but
if I accelerate hard, it goes away briefly. This along with the lack of wear
on the cam and rockers, the valve lash being correct, and the oil spray bar
spraying oil leads me to think injectors.

Do they get louder if they are having a problem? I wonder if this might
explain the odd warm start/flooding issue that happens on occasion...

Jeremy Clarkson has never been a big fan of BMW. For example, he says
that the Mini should have "a quintessentially German... sat-nav that only
goes to Poland", in response to a co-host's comment that the Mini concept
had a quintessentially English tea set integrated, and that its "fan belt
will last a thousand years". He's made other comments about BMW's
association with Nazis, too.

Not to mention his flagrant rewriting of his own history in the Z4 M
roadster review quoted earlier. He says he's a "big fan of BMW's M
cars" but the reality is that he didn't like ANY of them until the
E46 M3 CSL. Not the E30, not the E36, and not the E46.

He's funny but he can't really drive and he's a bit of an asshat.
Enjoy him, but don't take him seriously.

actually he didn't like the normal E46 M3 nor the CSL, he only liked
the CS. here's his review :
http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,12529-2177700,00.html
he actually quite liked it :

"There's none of the early M3 skittishness and terror, and (sat nav
aside) no stupid forays into technologies that don't work. It's just a
beautifully balanced, forgiving and thrilling driving machine."

he's an entertainer, not consumer reports, so he surely must be taken
with a grain of salt, but he's a complete hoot to read.

Ahh, right. CS, CSL, whatever. :)
