Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My left front strut is leaking in my 1990 E34 535i, 5spd, 108K miles. Further, I now get vibration in both my steering wheel and brake pedal when braking from speed. So, I'm planning on changing front struts (Boge) and upper and lower control arms (lemforder arms/Boge 750i bushing). Anything else? Also, when changing struts, do I need to change the strut mounts (guide support), in item 1 here: http://tinyurl.com/n2mpb I know there is a bearing in there, is it suppose to be changed or can it be relube? Thanks! Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I rarely see BMW strut mounts fail. I'd just go ahead and re-use them unless you see cracking in the rubber (open the hood and look) Use E34 M5 bushings on the thrust rods, not E32 750. The wood in any given car is usually a very close match. Unfortunately, the chances of ever matching that again are very slim. Back in my dealer days, we used to get stupid E34 owners come in with cracked wood on the driver's door panel ONLY. Why? Because in the middle of winter with 2" of ice on their car, they would open the damn driver's window. The extra thickness of the glass/ice combination would bulge the door panel as it passed through the opening in the door, to the point where it would crack the wood. 2 out of every 3 cars got all new wood, because we'd order a replacement piece and it wouldn't match, so the customer would insist that we replace all to match........... It's wood. Every tree is different, so the chances of getting more than a dozen or so identical pieces are nil. However, I've never seen one car with two shades of wood. I would not have a clue about ordering and paying out of pocket trying to get a match, is it special order or can they send it back? Under warranty I didn't care and demanded a close match, I didn't expect a perfect match but it needed to be of the same shade and pattern. I think they had a bad batch of glue as I had several replaced due to delaminating from the plastic. Yes it is a thin layer of wood veneer over plastic, just as the LTW pieces are a thin layer of Carbon fiber over plastic. They replaced every trim piece in the LTW too, think they used Elmer's school glue. I wish I had experiences to share with the group. As the subject line says, my 325is is for sale. 184XXX miles. I think I'm the third owner (can confirm on request). Inspection II at 180XXX. New front control arms, tie rods, and bushings. 16" Alpinas (need some TLC), Cibie H1/H4 E-code lamps, and E46 convertible RSM w/ Z3 reinforcement plates. Recent servicing at Bavarian Motorsport. One accident (rear-ended a minivan) which probably makes it suitable only for track duty or for fun around town. Asking $2500 but open to offers. See pics at http://www.geocities.com/cyrusyliu/325is.html Thanks for the bandwidth. Back to lurking... So I have ZERO first-hand experience with this car, but it looks fairly decent and the price sounds about right (maybe offer less?). It has a "buy it now" price of $26.9k, which seems darn reasonable to me. Heck, I'd buy it just as a sixth car for S&G, if it weren't for the fact that a recent post by a fellow E39 M5 owner on the E39 Yahoo list regarding the cost of his maintenance scared the dickens out of me! Which is all the more reason to be patient and wait for Rob to tire of his heavy, clunky beast that gets terrible, just awful, gas mileage. Rob, surely you've thought about getting a new, Bangle-ized 750 so that you can run Linux on the iDrive unit and never have to leave the car? (Yeah, those V-12 motors and electricals are completely bulletproof, no??) :-) Vty, --Dennis ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2006 17:00:15 -0400 From: "Rob Levinson * UUC Motorwerks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: FW: Good deal on E39 M5? Indeed - frightening, especially a couple of problems that are becoming more common - and almost unreconcilable. First, the carbon in the head issue casung a CE light fault (fixable, not being warranteed, costly). Second, the random overheating problem. BMW learned it's lesson from the E32 nightmares and over-compensated the reliability on the E38.
