Hi it’s Peter here, welcome to Tuesdays Levy Letter, hope you’ll be able to
join me BBC 1 six thirty. Paul will have the forecast, they’ll be all the day’s
news and we’ll be hearing the sound of the Beverley Minster Choir and finding
out why they might be loosing some of the women.

Emails

Emails on a variety of subjects this morning, so a few things to mention. ‘Dear
Peter, I have a theory, about stress’, we were talking about stress in the Levy
Letter at the end of last week. This one comes from Lesley, ‘I’m only 5’1”
tall, I do not stress at all because I work on the theory that people who are
taller than me will get stressed well before I do, especially if I hide behind
them! Also instead of stressing I use the wasp theorem; wait, absorb and slowly
proceed’. Lesley says for her it works every time, Lesley thank you very much.
A note here from Dave, he says ‘the emergency number 112 is used all over
Europe and indeed if you dial 112 in the UK you’ll get through to the emergency
services, it’s been programmed in on new phone systems over here for a number
of years ready for the change over, whenever it takes place.’ We were talking
yesterday about 112 being the new emergency number replacing 999, if Brussels
gets their way that is.
Some more feed back from something we discussed in the Levy Letter yesterday,
Joanna writes in ‘wouldn’t it be cheaper to cut down the trees that are close
to railway lines, or at least the worst offenders?’ nice idea Joanna but I’m
not sure what environmentalist would say about that!
Finally a birthday, this one from Chris Gray, he says ‘please could you give a
mention for my 21st birthday which is tomorrow, the 8th, in your Levy Letter.
I’m a student at the University of Lincoln and have been working really hard
for the past six weeks and I would be most grateful if you can give me a
mention.’ There we are Chris, all the very best, Happy 21st Birthday today,
don’t work too hard! Any more students, who get the Levy letter, let me know.
We’ll give the students a call, and maybe Chris you could get some others to
sign up at the university. All you need to do is go to one of the two addresses
at the bottom of the page, click on Levy Letter and follow the instructions
through. Remember you can contact me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] about
anything. One topic for you to get in touch about this week; are you having
problems getting access to an NHS dentist, let me know your experiences on that
one.

Children’s Diet

I see that children believe that chips are made from apples, eggs or flour,
according to some anyway. One in three youngsters, can you believe this, have
no idea of what the main ingredient in their favourite food is, so says new
research out today. A worrying 6% of children, aged between eight and fourteen
didn’t know chips were made from potatoes, despite eating them regularly.

Driving

Well men are the kings of the road while women struggle with the most basic
tasks such as parking, that’s what the old jokes would have you believe. But
it’s not true, research has found that women are the safer drivers and it’s all
down to their hormones, they make them significantly better than men at
shifting concentration when on the road. Scientists at the University of
Bradford looked at how the sexes faired in tests designed to measure skills
such as memory, spatial awareness and co-ordination. Some of the questions
looked at the ability to switch attention quickly while concentrating. A
‘knack’ know to be governed by the female hormone oestrogen. So there we are,
sorry chaps but women are better on the roads, it’s official and proven from
research, and that’s from a university in Yorkshire.

Guests

Is there’s a guest you’d like to see on the show? If so, let me know, send me
the details of who you’d like on, or if you know of anyone coming to the
region, or indeed from the region and we’ll see if we can get then on. If you
want to email me, it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED] At the end of last week I was talking
to Katherine Jenkins about her new album. Now her album was only released last
Monday and it’s gone straight into number four in the album charts. Well done
to Katherine, great album it is as well.

Well that’s it from me, so far today. Enjoy your Tuesday, join me tonight BBC 1
six thirty, have a good day, bye.

 Peter.
