Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well. I hope you will be able to join me tonight, BBC1 at 6.30pm. Last
night on the programme we had Tom Owen, son of the late Bill Owen. For six
years now, and that’s hard to believe, for six years now he’s been playing Tom
in Last of the Summer Wine. He’s on his way to Grimsby for panto at Christmas.
And yes, the panto season is here. We’ll be talking to all the stars on the
programme. On the show tonight, we’ll be talking to the Grumbleweeds. They were
three, but now they are two and the Grumbleweeds are on their way to our part
of the world and I’ll be talking to them tonight, BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Christmas Trees

I can’t remember why, but I got onto the subject of black Christmas trees,
which, I read in the paper last week, are considered trendy and fashionable.
Well, I’ve obviously touched on a nerve. There’s a note here from Denise Tasker
from Lincolnshire. She says, “I bought a six foot black Christmas tree this
year Peter for £35! I’ve wanted one for years. They’re trendy and they look
good. They’re decorated with red lights only and they look absolutely
fantastic. I’m going to decorate mine with ice blue silver and clear glass blue
baubles and blue lights. I can’t wait.” So you are trendy there in Thimbleby in
Lincolnshire. So thank you Denise for that one.

And also one here from Elaine and she says, “I have just read your Levy Letter
and if you really want to see a black Christmas tree then you’ve got to get
yourself to Sandhill Nurseries in Preston. I saw one there last Friday, but to
be honest I prefer the traditional green ones. I saw you on the ice…need I say
more!!!” No you need not! Thank you very much indeed Elaine.

And just one final one from Karen, “Black Christmas trees? Well, I’d be looking
at my £90 again. Colin and Justin were after making Christine Hamilton’s
kitchen black. I’ve got a medium sized fibre optic tree.” So there we are, I
think we’ve touched a nerve on people’s Christmas trees! So what colour is your
tree? Are you buying black Christmas trees? Let me know, get in touch as usual

House Prices

Always a topical one this, but I read this morning that the average asking
price for a home has risen again to nearly £200 000! The figure, which is up by
more than £1500 in a month, was hailed as proof that it’s the bubble that never
bursts. Experts said it was a sign that the boom has had a soft landing. The
survey of a hundred and thirty thousand properties found that the average
asking price for a house across Britain was £197 000 in the four weeks to
November 12th. This was £1500 or 0.8% higher than the previous month and £7500
more than the same period last year. So in a year, the average house price in
this country has gone up by seven and a half thousand pounds. The average house
price is now just short of £200 000. Your views on that of course are more than
welcome. You can email me direct on [EMAIL PROTECTED] for that or for anything
else of course.

Fiery chef Marco Pierre White is in the news again. He’s savaged British food
as atrocious and depressing. He’s the first British chef to receive three
Michelin stars. He has also dubbed people lazy in their eating habits. His
attack came as the food critic Egon Ronay’s latest guide to the best
restaurants in Britain revealed that gastro pubs serve better food than many
traditional bistros in France. So there you are. But Marco Pierre White has
complained about the price of British motorway services. That’s quite cheeky
isn’t it, because you’d be pushed to eat at any of his restaurants for less
than £50 a head. He’s also had a go at the coffee served in motorway services
and he’s wrong about that too, because it’s improved somewhat over the years.
And also, the question is, how often does Marco Pierre White stop off for
something to eat at a motorway service station?…probably not often!

Calendars

Just the daily reminder that they are still on sale, they’re still £5 and the
money is still going to Children In Need. You can pick them up from any of our
receptions or send me a cheque made payable to the BBC for £6 to BBC Look North
calendars, Queen’s Court, Queen’s Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. Of course all the
money is going to Children In Need.

How Does She Do It

Better shape than she was twenty years ago. All the papers are talking about
it. How does Madge do it? Yes Madonna! She’s never been more talked about. The
paper is asking as well, how does a forty-seven year old mother of two defy
nature, time and gravity to look better than she did twenty years ago. After
two pregnancies, her stomach is washboard flat, she wears a dress size six and
at five foot four weighs just under eight stone. Yet she is a forty-seven year
old mother of two and the rumours are that she’s not been anywhere near a
surgeon’s knife – it’s all natural. Well, I don’t know how she does it, but
she’s certainly looking good on it. But the only thing that’s been a give away
is that she was asked to read on Children In Need the telephone number for
people to pledge money and she got the number wrong. This caused Terry Wogan to
bring into the open the fact that her eyesight probably isn’t that good! But if
you look like that, then who cares!

Well, that’s it from me for today. Join me tonight BBC1 at 6.30pm for all the
day’s news, Paul will have the forecast and of course look out for your Levy
Letter tomorrow.

Take care, bye

Peter
