Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and that you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm for
all the day’s news. Paul will have the forecast of course and the sixties
rocker, who is still going strong, Joe Brown will be joining us tonight on the
programme. So join me for Look North as usual.

Emails

Thanks for your emails on a variety of subjects. We’ll return to the subject of
smoking a little bit later on in the letter, but first of all let me mention
this email here. I got talking about Christmas presents and this one says, “On
the subject of presents, my daughter wants a toy called Pixel Chix. It’s a girl
made up of pixels on a screen and living in a toy house. They’re on TV every
night. You try getting one Peter! You can’t for love nor money!” That one comes
from Keith in Beverley, who’s obviously got a mission on for his daughter’s
Christmas present.

And another one here. This one comes from Paul. He says, “Where does a sat.
nav. unit fall under legislation past last year?” I was saying that satellite
navigation systems are going to be one of the most bought presents this year.
And he says, “Where does it fall under legislation? If it’s against the law to
use a mobile phone whilst driving, is it ok to play with the sat. nav. system?”
Well, I don’t know the answer to that one Paul, but thank you very much indeed
for your email.

Also, thanks for suggestions for guests for the programme and also thank you to
all those who said they enjoyed us having Hayley Westenra on the programme on
Monday. Keep your suggestions coming in for artists, who you’d like to see on
the red sofa. Send me the details and we’ll see what we can do – [EMAIL

His and Hers TV

This apparently is the latest gadget. It’s an enormous plasma TV screen, which
splits into two, so that you can have BBC1 on one side and ITV on the other.
The perfect TV screen has arrived for couples who squabble over what to watch.
Soon, it goes on sale, allowing two people to sit on the sofa and watch the
same TV, but watch different programmes. You don’t have to wear headsets either
for the sound, because apparently this split sound technology called Beam To Me
will solve the problem, by focussing a tight beam of sound at each individual.
So I can be sat on the sofa and you can be sat in the armchair, and I can be
watching a football match, whilst you watch a soap, if you wish just a few feet
away. And apparently this actually works! His and Hers TV – that’s the latest
gadget! It’s on its way! Be warned!

Smoking

Thanks very much indeed for a huge reaction to what I was talking about in the
Levy Letter at the start of this week about smoking in public places. Smoking
is always and emotive issue. Here’s just a few of the emails that have come in
over the last couple of days.

Mike Johnson, who stopped smoking 7 months ago writes – “I think smoking should
be banned in public places. Not only would it benefit people like me who have
to put up with passive smoking, but I think it would help people who want to
stop.”

Derek Foster from Hull emailed in to say, “I just wonder what will happen if so
many smokers get fed up with all the restrictions that they give up smoking.
Where will the government look to recoup all that lovely tax that we now pay -
non smokers perhaps?!”

June Fitz Gibbon wanted to say, “There are so many health risks that it is
about time that non-smokers had their rights respected. I personally am looking
forward to a ban so that I can go to pubs and clubs without coughing and
smelling like an ashtray.”

Dave Hills from Market Rasen thinks that “during the whole debate on whether or
not smoking should be banned in public places, nobody seems to have mentioned
that the street is a public place. Presumably all of the office workers etc who
nip out for a smoke in doorways and alleys will be unable to do so if a ban
comes into effect.”

And this email from Steve Jones comes all the way from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia,
and Steve tells me he used to smoke up to sixty a day! He writes, “please tell
your viewers that they should go see their doctor and make use of the help
available from the NHS then they don’t need to worry about the ban. If I can do
it anybody can.”

So that’s just a small sample from all the emails that came in about smoking.
So thanks for those. If you want to add your comments to these then please get
in touch at the usual address – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Children In Need

The Children In Need calendar is still selling well, but there’s still a chance
for you to pick one up before the New Year. If you’d like a BBC Look North
Children In Need Calendar then they are £5 on sale from the BBC receptions in
Grimsby, Lincoln and Hull and on the BBC Radio Humberside and Lincolnshire
buses. And of course if you can’t get out, then you can send me a cheque made
payable to the BBC for £6 to cover postage and packing. Then of course we’ll
send you a calendar by return of post. As always the address is BBC Look North
Calendars, Queens Court, Queens Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH.

And just a reminder as well, on Friday night, Children In Need night,
throughout the evening, then I will be in Lincoln at the City Square at the ice
rink there. If you can make it then it would be great to see you there from
about 6.00pm in the City Square.

Celebrations

Three mentions in the Levy Letter today. One is a belated birthday to Maureen
from Hull, who was 41 yesterday, Tuesday 15th November. Sorry we missed your
birthday yesterday, but I hope you had a great day!

And one more here, Barry Richardson emailed in to ask if we could wish his wife
Lesley a very happy birthday for today, Wednesday 16th November. Barry says, “I
won’t say how old she is, but she was born in 1940!” He’ll be in trouble for
that!! He also says to make up for that, “Please wish her all the best and tell
her I love her.” So Lesley, happy birthday for today and lots of love from your
husband Barry.

And another email came in from Jo Linford – “Please can you wish my colleague
Christopher Howell congratulations on his new engagement to Lisa in your Levy
Letter? He reads your news letter every day. He’s a huge fan of you and the
show, watches it every day, and often starts discussions about what was on the
show last night at work, so this would really make his day!” So Christopher –
this mention’s for you! Congratulations on your engagement and please let us
know the outcomes of your discussion groups! Perhaps we’ll include some of your
comments on items in
the show in the Levy Letter soon!

Carol Service

Just an early reminder of something that’s happening on the evening of the 8th
December at the Street Life Museum in Hull. There’s a celebrity carol service.
Blair Jacobs will be hosting the evening. The service starts at 8.30pm and
there will be readings by amongst others, John Godber and the playwright Alan
Plater. Musical accompaniment will be by Amy Black and I shall be there as well
to do a reading as well. So get your tickets! That’s at the Street Life
Museum’s carol service and that starts at 8.30pm on the 8th December.

That’s it from me for today. Have a very good day. Join me for Look North
tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. And look out for your Levy Letter tomorrow!

Take care, bye

Peter
