Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going ok and I’m sure you’re looking forward to the weekend. I hope you can
join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm for all the day’s news and of course for the
detailed weather forecast for the weekend from Paul. We’ll also be talking to a
couple of band members from Franz Ferdinand ahead of their gig in Hull tonight.

I finished yesterday’s letter by saying keep warm. No sooner had the letter
gone out, then at 1.40pm an email came in from Robert. He says, “Hi Peter, in
today’s Levy Letter you signed off by saying keep warm. Well, spare a thought
for us poor construction workers suffering in West Africa. It is 37 degrees
Celsius. We are not trying to keep warm! But we enjoy reading your Levy
Letters.” So there you are. That’s from Robert, who hails from Beverley, but is
receiving his Levy Letter in West Africa where it is 37oC! You couldn’t make it
up could you?

I also mentioned yesterday about I’m A Celebrity. You will know of course that
Canon and Ball are now in the jungle ahead of their starring role in the
pantomime in Hull this year. There’s a note here from Paul Robinson, who’s
emailed me after yesterday’s letter. “Firstly, I don’t watch ‘I’m A Minor
Celebrity Wanting To Get My Name Noticed Again’ and nor do I watch any of the
reality TV voting game show that seem to proliferate on our TV at the moment.
Do you find it mind-numbingly dull to watch a dozen has-beens moaning about the
conditions they have to put up with?” So there you are. Strong words from Paul
on the subject of reality TV shows. Thanks for all the emails. Keep them coming
in. If you want to write to me, then it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Memory

The secret of having an excellent memory is learning to forget apparently.
Scientists believe that the ability to ignore unnecessary information is the
only way to remember those vital details. Those with the best memories can
filter out facts and figures that they don’t need, while scatterbrains allow
their minds to become cluttered with useless information. Until now, those with
good memories were credited with being able to process and store information
better than others. The researchers from the University of Oregon believe the
brain contains its own version of the nightclub bouncer keeping out unwanted
riff raff. Did you follow that? I hope so!

Women Drivers

Well, not so much women drivers really, but women wanting to buy a car. Women
are intimidated when it comes to dealing with car salesmen. And while dealers
are only half as likely to offer females customers a decent discount or haggle
over finance deals, they’re more likely to pressurise them into a sale, says a
report. Undercover research by the consumer magazine, ‘What Car’, claims that
women are getting raw deals in the show rooms, paying an extra £534 on average
compared to a male. The difference climbs to nearly £3000 when the best
discount offered to a man is compared to the worst discount offered to a woman.
In other words, women are being intimidated when buying a new car and paying a
lot more than a man would for the same car. That’s really quite interesting
isn’t it?

I mentioned yesterday as well, about this DVD that’s out. I should have known
better really. It’s a DVD that sells for £9.99 and is an instant fireplace.
Like me in my flat here, if you haven’t got a fireplace, then all you’ve got to
do is put the DVD on and sit around and watch your telly. Well no, you can’t
sit around the fire and watch the TV, because the TV is the fire. But you can
sit around and watch your fire on your TV. Several people have emailed in to
say that they are selling extremely well. So maybe it’s me, I don’t know. But
the DVDs are still available.

Christmas Lights

I note here from Phil. He says, “A few evenings ago, you mentioned the high
sales in this area for Christmas lights in displays that people put on at this
time of year. One of my pleasures in the dark days of December is driving past
these displays on the journey home from work. Now given that you have a regular
Levy Letter, would it be possible for you to invite viewers and readers to
submit details of their best displays in the area and for your excellent staff
to pinpoint these on a few local maps for us to detour and take in the sights?
For a start, I would like to nominate Priory Road, and Calvert Lane and Askew
Avenue in West Hull for starters.” So there you are. Phil – thank you for that.
If you’ve got your Christmas lights up and you’d like some publicity in the
Levy Letter then let me know where the best lights are.

Well, that’s just about it from me for today’s Levy Letter and indeed for this
week. Have a very good weekend. Keep warm to those of us in the UK and keep
cool to Robert and his colleagues in West Africa! Join me tonight on BBC1 at
6.30pm and also look out for your Levy Letter on Monday. Also if there’s anyone
you know who’s not signed up to the Levy Letter, but would like one, then point
them in the direction of the address at the bottom of the page, click on Levy
Letter and follow the instructions through.

Take care,

Peter
