Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’re going to join me tonight BBC1 at 6.30pm. On the
programme last night we had the Grumbleweeds. Very successful in the variety
world and we’ve got another variety star tonight, Geoffrey Durham. He’s a
magician and also, and I’m sure he doesn’t like to get billed as this, but he
used to be married to the comedienne Victoria Wood. He used to be The Great
Soprendo until he started working under his own name of Geoffrey Durham, but
he’ll be talking to me tonight on the programme. We’ll have all the day’s news
of course and the all important weather forecast from Paul. Join me tonight at
the usual time of 6.30pm.

Emails

We’ve had emails on a variety of subjects that we’ve talked about and on some
things that we haven’t talked about really. Let’s just get through some of them
here. Janet Miller – she says, “On the subject of black Christmas trees, my son
Alex’s best friend has just given him a six foot black fibre optic Christmas
tree. Apparently he and his girlfriend got it free with a traditional green one
that they bought. Maybe the shop thought that black would never catch on!”
That’s from Janet Miller on the subject of black Christmas trees, which are
apparently ‘in’ and trendy at the moment.

And one here from Len, he says, “Hi Peter. I’ve just read your bit on the
increase in house prices and would say that it’s all relevant really as you may
get an uplifted price for your house, but you have to pay the same uplift on
the one that you’re purchasing.” He said, “I’ve got a nice new front door for
my house recently and it cost me more than I paid for my first house fifty
years ago and that wasn’t cheap at the time!” I can well believe that Len,
thank you very much indeed. The first house that I bought in 1976 was a little
terraced cottage and it was £8000! A bit more than a front door, but not much!

We were talking about food yesterday and Egon Ronay and Pierre Marco White,
who’s really upset the apple cart. There’s one here from Tony in Newark, he
says, “Dear Peter, I wouldn’t expect to go to a restaurant in France and find a
menu written in English, so why do we have to put up with this pretentious idea
of having descriptions in French for our own restaurants menus and even in some
pubs. A report on today’s BBC news has Egon saying that English pub food is
better than many French restaurants and bistros, so there really is no sense in
perpetuating the myth that a menu written in a foreign language means that you
are a gastronomically superior establishment.” Too true! And also if it was
written in English, we could pronounce it and read it! So Tony - thank you very
much indeed.

Hull

Last night on the programme, we were talking to a chap, who’s produced a
calendar all about Hull with some less than flattering pictures of the city. I
was winding him up a bit on the programme last night asking who would sell
more, him with his pictures of Hull or me with my calendar and with that in
mind this morning, I got an email through from Hannah. Hannah is from Hull, but
she’s doing another term at Leeds University. She gets the Levy Letter every
day in Leeds. So Hannah - thank you very much indeed. She said, “I thought you
might be interested to see what my friend found in Chat magazine, a weekly
magazine with true life stories and recipes, that kind of thing. I’ve attached
a picture of one of their puzzle pages. Take a look at the one in the middle
and when you look at it the solution is actually Hull, which is described as
the worst place to live in the UK. Once again, a national magazine has done
damage to Hull albeit in Chat magazine.” She says, “It could easil!
y have said home of the longest bridge, or Philip Larkin’s home, but I suppose
they thought that wouldn’t be entertaining.” So well spotted on that one.
Hannah – thank you very much. I hope it’s going well for you at Leeds
University.

Stars

Don’t forget if there’s someone you’d like to see on the sofa then do get in
touch and let me know. We’ve got several emails suggesting a variety of
different guests. We’re chasing them all. There’s a little note here that comes
from David Burton in Sutton Park, he says, “Coincidentally my eldest son,
Andrew, is in Melbourne and yesterday he visited the set of Neighbours. He met
the actor who plays Harold Bishop and he mentioned that he was from Hull.
Harold said that he knew Hull and had visited the city and had been impressed!”
So there you are, a bit of publicity for Hull from Harold Bishop. Thank you
very much indeed from David and Andrew!

Homeopathic Remedies

I see from a report that those who take homeopathic remedies for illness, well
70% of them claim that those given medication to treat symptoms for conditions
such as asthma and eczema felt better as a result. The researchers said that
the findings demonstrated the value of homeopathy to the NHS and showed that it
should be more widely available.

Write To Me

Don’t forget if you want to write to me about any subject, you can get me
direct on email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] And obviously we’re trying to get the Levy
Letter circulation as large as possible. It’s growing by the day, I can tell
you that. If you’ve got a friend or relative, who’s not signed up for a daily
email, then there’s something to look forward to on these cold days, then get
them to go to one of the addresses at the bottom of the page, click on Levy
Letter, follow the instructions and from tomorrow they will receive their daily
Levy Letter.

That’s it from me. Have a very good Wednesday. Keep warm! Join me tonight, BBC1
at 6.30pm.

Take care, bye

Peter
