Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope your weekend was good, despite the disappointment of
Saturday. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game of football that went on quite so
long and was so tense all the way through. It was just unbearable to watch
wasn’t it? We haven’t won the World Cup since 1966 and everybody was so hoping
that this would be the year. I’m sure they think that every year, but it was so
to the wire and so tense on Saturday teatime. I can’t believe as well that they
had been playing football for two and a quarter hours in temperatures of 30
degrees Celsius! It was just amazing. But there seems to be fairly strong views
on the whole affair from reading the stories in the papers. But, it didn’t
happen this year.

Despite the football, I hope your weekend was good and welcome to the start of
another week of Levy Letters. I hope you can join me tonight on BBC One at half
past six as ever for tonight’s Look North. I’ll have all the news, of course,
from around the region and Lisa will have the forecast.

On tonight's programme, Look North will be reporting live as the trial begins
of the former Hull County Council leader, Colin Inglis. He's charged with child
abuse allegations and I'll have the latest on that.

I'll be speaking to the Lincolnshire MP, who claims people will die in the wake
of massive hospital cuts in the county. Last week, the Hospital Trust announced
hundreds of job losses. And bosses are also considering reducing services at
the A&E Unit at Grantham Hospital. They need to save money after overspending
by more than fifteen million pounds last year. I’ll have the full story later
on the programme.

Plus, has your bank become a trendy wine bar? We'll be in a local village where
all the banks are pulling out. Local residents are mounting a campaign to stop
the move as they say they will then have to travel miles to do any banking
business and say this will prevent many elderly residents from getting to their
local branch at all. I’ll have the full story on that later.

And despite the disappointment of the football, I expect we can all say how
much we enjoyed the lovely weather over the weekend. Well, we'll be beside the
seaside to see how you're keeping cool as temperatures soar in our region. I
hope you can join me then.

Mobile Phones

Talking on a mobile phone whilst driving is as dangerous as drink driving,
according to new research. And even using a hands-free kit does not stop a
motorist’s ability to be impaired, according to a new study. This is quite
riveting stuff. They asked volunteers to get behind a wheel of a driving
simulator four times. They drove once whilst not distracted, once while using a
hand held mobile phone, once using a hands-free kit and once after drinking a
vodka and orange. The study found that people are as impaired when they drive
and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive passed the legal
blood/alcohol limit, which is just incredible. Those are the details just out
from a recent research study. So if you do use a mobile phone, then be warned.
And you do still see so many people just using their mobile phone in their
hands, without a hands-free kit.

Living In The Sun

A record number of pensioners are retiring abroad to start a new life by
cashing in the value of their homes here. For the first time, more than one
million people have decided to leave the country. That’s up by 50% over the
last decade, according to new figures. Spain and its warm climate is a popular
destination with the number of Britons retiring there trebling over ten years
to almost seventy-five thousand. Most of those are nearing retirement and have
paid off their mortgage and so they can enjoy 100% of the profits when they
sell. Many people will sell their home in the UK and they will still have
£100,000 to spend whilst over there. Your views on that one, gratefully
received! And indeed on anything else that you’d like to comment on, then get
in touch. Plus, if you’ve got a problem that you think I could tackle on your
behalf on Leave it to Levy, then drop me a line. Give me the details and we’ll
see what we can do. It’s the same address for anything to do with the p!
rogramme of course - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Humber Bridge

Just a note for your diary that the Humber Bridge bash weekend is coming up.
It’s not this weekend, but the weekend after. And just a reminder that it’s the
twenty-fifth anniversary of the bridge. And there’s another little date for
your diary here. If you can make it down, and it should be a lovely evening, to
the Hessle foreshore on Friday week (so that’s not this Friday, but the Friday
after), then we’ll be doing the programme live from down there. The whole of
Look North will be coming live from the Hessle foreshore to celebrate the
twenty-fifth anniversary of the bridge. We’ll have our guests there and some
music and we’ll also be having a special camera as well from the top of the
Humber Bridge. So if you can make it down to Hessle foreshore at about a
quarter past six, then join me for the programme live. So it’s not this Friday,
but the Friday after. And pass that message around as well to everyone you
know. The more we can get there, then the better the atmosphere w!
ill be. That’s the Humber Bridge on the Hessle foreshore for a special
programme.

Fireman Sam

Now, if you’re quick, then we’ve got a special competition for you. If you’ve
got young children or if you know someone, who’s got young children, then you
might like to enter this competition. I’ve got a family ticket for Friday of
this week to go and see ‘Fireman Sam To The Rescue’ at the Hull New Theatre. So
if you fancy a trip out with the kids on Friday of this week, then go and see
Fireman Sam. All you’ve got to do is to email me back with the answer to this
question. Obviously though, only enter if you are able to get to Hull on
Friday. The question for the tickets has nothing to do with Fireman Sam, but to
do with Thomas The Tank Engine – which well-known musician is the voice of
Thomas The Tank Engine? Do you think you know? Well, email me in with the
answer to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That’s it from me for today. Have a very good Monday afternoon and join me
tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm.

Take care,

Peter
