Hello, it's Peter here and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight. It’s Friday and the
last day of the week, but we’ll be there on BBC One as usual at half past six.

I’ll have all the day’s stories and of course, there’ll be a detailed weather
forecast tonight from Lisa Gallagher.

Also tonight, I'll have a special report on the inquest of the deaths of two
motorists in our region. A woman from North Lincolnshire died whilst driving
ninety miles per hour down the wrong way on the M180. We hear today that she
was nearly three times over the legal drink and drive limit. I’ll have the full
story tonight as the inquest concludes.

And I'll have the latest on the double fatality in a fire near Spalding.
Forensic teams are working at the scene of a fire which claimed the lives of a
Lincolnshire couple at Holbeach St Johns near Spalding in the early hours of
this morning. More on that one later.

Plus I'll be speaking to the controversial MP, George Galloway, ahead of his
one man show in Hull and we'll be live at the Waddington air show. It’s always
a fantastic spectacle at the air show and it’s not just for the aircraft
enthusiasts either. So we’ll be live at the air show today.

Plus tune in tonight for a preview of the big sporting event at the weekend.
No, not as you might think the World Cup, but the world flat cap throwing
championships in Driffield. Yes, there really is a world flat cap throwing
competition! Can you believe this? Well, I’ll have more on that later. I hope
you can join me tonight for Look North.

Weekend

The weekend is nearly here and the rumours are that the weather forecast is
going to say that it’ll be very warm and sunny. If you’ve got something planned
or organised this weekend, then I hope it goes well. And if you’ve got any
charity event that you want a plug for, then give me the details and let me
know about it. Send me the details for a plug in the Levy Letter. And also just
a little reminder, that if you’d like to get in touch, if you’ve got a problem
or an issue that you think we could deal with on the programme, then also let
me know. Or if you’ve got a picture that you’d like us to see, then you can
email me anytime to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, if there’s anyone you know, who’s
not signed up to the Levy Letter, then point them in the direction of either
one of the two addresses at the bottom of the page and click on Levy Letter and
sign up! They’ll get their first daily email from me on Monday. And by the way,
thanks to everyone, who entered our Keane competit!
ion. We had a huge response, so thank you very much indeed. Keep reading,
because I’ll be announcing the winner shortly!

Autobiography

I was saying the other day about Charlotte Church writing her second
autobiography at the age of something crazy like twenty-five or twenty-six. But
autobiographies are in the news again. Not content with his wages of five
million pounds a year for managing England, but Sven Goran-Eriksson has signed
a deal worth more than 1.5 million pounds to write a book about himself. He’s
expected to discuss his career, his colourful personal life and his opinions of
footballers like Wayne Rooney and David Beckham. The plan for the autobiography
is that it will be published in time for the Christmas rush and this was
revealed as his team prepare for the World Cup quarter final against Portugal
tomorrow. But that’s 1.5 million pounds for Sven to write his autobiography.
Well, will you read it?

High Definition

I was saying earlier in the week that I had been out for a meal to a restaurant
in Hessle and they had high definition television on the wall and it was the
first time I’d seen it. The football was on and then there was a wildlife film.
I don’t know if you’ve seen HD TV, but it was really impressive. The BBC is
leading the way with HD, by commissioning programmes filmed entirely in HD
format like that incredible series, Planet Earth. And we’re all looking forward
to it, but apparently, the only people, who not looking forward to it are
people like me, who work in television. And why is that? Because it shows every
single flaw! One paper has printed the pictures of how stars’ faces would look
on ordinary television and then compares it with how it would look on ordinary
television. It is quite extraordinary! (if not a little bit frightening!) And
they quoted one television presenter, who said that, “there is one saving grace
that there is a special filter on the lens of the c!
amera. There’s always gossip going around about certain presenters, who demand
a magic filter in their contract. I’ve even heard rumours that some satellite
channels have a five years younger button that puts the presenter into soft
focus. We’re about to move into a new studio set on the programme I work on,
which is Newsnight. Maybe I could persuade the editor that soft focus is the
new black! You’ll know I’ve been successful, if politicians on Newsnight look
as though they’ve been dipping in to the botox!” So there you are. For all
television presenters, especially the lined and wrinkled old ones like myself,
then high definition television is on the way. Be warned! But seriously, if you
haven’t seen it then it is pretty impressive. So have a look and see what you
think. As always let me know.

Getting To Sleep

Parents are scorning lullabies these days and are singing their children to
sleep with songs by James Blunt, Robbie Williams and even The Streets! Today’s
babies are more likely to be sung to sleep with pop music than with traditional
rhymes like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Rock-a-bye-baby. The top ten bedtime
tunes are You’re Beautiful by James Blunt, She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5, Put
Your Records On by Corrinne Bailey-Rae and Angels by Robbie Williams. So there
you are. How things have changed? But that’s how you’re getting your children
off to sleep now apparently. So the lullaby classics are no longer found in the
nurseries, but it’s all the top pop classics instead. If you’ve got a thought
on that or a story of how you get your children to sleep, then let me know. Get
in touch and email me in as usual to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As I said a few minutes ago, thanks to everyone who entered the competition to
win the tickets to see Keane perform in Hull in October. As I said, we had
loads of response to this. Obviously, Keane are very popular! The correct
answer to the name of their brand new album is Under The Iron Sea and the
winner of those tickets is Carole Ellerington from Hull! So Carole,
congratulations!

So thanks to everyone, who entered and sorry if you weren’t lucky this time.
However, we’ve got yet another exclusive Levy Letter competition. If you’ve got
children, then you might like to take them to see ‘Fireman Sam To The Rescue’
at Hull New Theatre. And we’ve got tickets for you to win. I’ll have the full
details next week.

Well, that's it from me for today. Just a reminder that of course, it’s a busy
weekend, this weekend with the football. As always, join the crowds at the Big
Screen in Hull to watch the match. Everyone has told me what a great atmosphere
it is down there with everyone watching the football together. Whatever you’re
doing then have a very good time.

Join me on Monday, after the weekend, for another week on Look North. And just
a reminder, as I mentioned last night, the Big Screen has got a special
performance next Friday night again, live from the Royal Opera House in London.
I’ll give the full details about that and the start time for that next week.
But the rumours are that the weather is going to be good at the end of next
week, so make a note in your diary for Friday night to come into Hull with your
picnic and watch your free treat on the Big Screen. More details on that next
week in the Levy Letter.

Have a very good weekend and keep everything crossed for the big game!

Take care,

Peter
