Hi there, it’s Peter here with the start of another week’s worth of Levy
Letters. I hope you enjoyed your weekend whatever you got up to!

Space Tourist

I’m not sure anybody in my generation would have believed this story would be
possible! Am I right? Well, I’ve read that the US space tourist, Richard
Garriott, has successfully blasted off into space. He’s paid £15m for the
pleasure! So it’s not really an option for most of us as a cheap getaway this
Autumn! His £15m will take him on a ten day trip to the International Space
Station. And Richard is following in his father’s footsteps. In 1973, Owen
Garriott, spent sixty days on the space station taking photographs of the
Earth’s surface and Owen will send messages of support to his son from mission
control in Moscow. I’m not sure if I’d fancy that. I know you all know that I
like flying, but going into space is something else! And spending so much time
in the space station might I think get a bit claustrophobic. You certainly
can’t open a window for some fresh air! What do you reckon? Would you want to
go and visit the ISS? It’s not just a fun road trip though for the astro!
nauts. The professionals will be starting up a new life support machine for
the ISS, which should enable full-time occupancy of the orbiting outpost to be
increased from three to six in the new year. Isn’t it strange to think that
space tourism is now a reality!

Horse Of The Year Show

She’s had a tumultuous career hasn’t she? And I’m sure you either love her or
dislike her, but Katie Price, also known as the model Jordan, has gone for a
rather different career path. She starred in the dressage demonstration at the
Horse of the Year show this weekend. And her performance was so popular, she
was asked to perform in the finale. In July of this year, Katie was turned away
from the Cartier International polo event in Windsor, because she claimed, she
wasn’t the type of person they wanted at the event. She’s since set her sights
on competing in the London Olympics in 2012. Well, that’s certainly a
surprising turn of events isn’t it! I’m sure the media will continue to follow
the story!

Earthquake

Remember the earthquake we all experienced in our region this year? Well, I had
a note here from Lesley in Boston. She writes, “Hi, I was wondering if you ever
heard any more about those gadgets that were placed into the ground after our
earth tremor quite some months back? What annoys me most about certain news all
over the world is you hear of a volcano erupting and it’s on the TV all that
day, then nothing. I would like to know if you heard any more about the earth
tremor, and whether or not they found any after-shocks? You never know these
things if you don’t ask eh!” Thanks Lesley for getting in touch with us. Just
to let you know though that we haven’t forgotten about this story. We are
following the progress of the scientists, but we’re waiting for research
results to come back. Once we know of anything, then we will put it on the
programme. Thanks Lesley for asking the question though. And that reminds me,
if you ever want to know about a follow-up to a story we’ve c!
overed on the programme, then do let me know. And if there’s a story you think
we should be covering, then get in touch. It’s the usual address for this or
anything else on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Take care,

Peter
