Subject: Re: silencing the modem?
A modem will accept changes to its setup almost infinitely. It will,
on the other hand, accept changes to its SAVED startup profile --
meaning the specific settings loaded when you turn the power on for
your external modem or turn the power on for your PC and thereby an
internal modem -- only so many times. You save changes to your
startup profile with "AT&W" without the quote marks. Typically,
people setup their modems to function in a specific way, save the
resulting setup with AT&W ONLY ONCE, and then use ATZ on subsequent
occasions in an initialization string issued by communication
software to clear out any settings the user does not want while
replacing them with ONLY the settings from the startup profile. There
is no limit on the number of times you can use ATZ; AT&W is the
only command that has a limited lifespan.
