Butch, I haven't seen metioned anywhere that the U33C's pilot is going to be a
one piece casting with the truck. It will very likely be a sepaarate pice and
therefore be just as easy to attach it to the lcomoive shell.

I'll still bet the MTH with the swinging pilots outsells the fixed pilot stuff
by quite a bit.

However...

I can't disagree with you on Lionel's philosophy, but consider this: The U33C
is the first, repeat FIRST, locomotive or piece of rolling stock that the
contemporary Lionel Corp. is offering with scale wheels, be it in in S or O. I
think we can cut them some slack.

Besides, you won't have to worry... If Lionel doesn't get a decent response
from the scale crowd, the U33C will also probably be the LAST locomotive
offered with scale wheels. Then we can complain louder and longer on how
Lionel is ignoring the scale market.

Now, I freely admit I walk both sides of the line with regards to S. Maybe
that's why I don't quite understand the vitriol going on about the swinging
pilots.

Primarily, I do scale. When I switched to S from HO in 1985, I didn't want to
have anything to do with Flyer or HiRail. But now, I have a respectible HiRail
fleet that A: I used to run with a modular group, B: I can justify to myself
for buying things ouside my midwestern preferences, C: Just might go do the
HiRail thing if I ever have to tear down my current layout for whatever reason
and D: Sometimes is just plain fun.

End result... Would I like to see fixed pilots on the U33C? Sure. Do swinging
pilots on the U33C want me to declare a pox on Lionel's house? No.

I still think the U33C is more of a benefit to S than a detriment.
