cyclic symbolic link in /usr/local/share/nls/C
Hello, why is, regardless of freebsd version in /usr/local/share/nls/C the following symbolic link to itself C -> C , why not .keep_me or something? It somtimes lets find operations fail (too much redirections). Setting the sticky bit on /var/mail...
I am using Exim as a local mail agent on 5.1-RELEASE-p10. Suddenly, I can no longer set the sticky bit on /var/mail...not even as root. The error is "operation not permitted" when I run 'chmod 1777 mail'...this error doesn't occur on 4.9-RC. What could cause this type of behavior, the sudden inability to set that sticky bit? Further, if anyone has a pointer (beyond the manual) to information regarding this, I would be grateful for the pointer. I just finished a cvsup this weekend; but I am not sure when this became a problem because the machine is a testbed for 5.x and is often turned off for extended periods. Anyway, if anyone has a clue for me, I would appreciate it. I am guessing (utterly in the dark) that the culprit may be a chflags issue? fxp0, fxp1 falling into promiscuous mode ?
Hi, I run my FBSD Box as a gateway for my internal network on ipf and ipnat. ( with rdr rules set as port forwarding ) After changing my NICs to Compaq NC3134, dual ports Intel 82559 Server NIC, I found that the NICs sometimes fell into promiscuous mode when I log into the console. The system sometimes shows up fxp0 promiscuous mode enabled fxp0 promiscuous mode disabled fxp1 promiscuous mode enabled fxp1 promiscuous mode disabled in this way in between. I have a win2000 box in the internal network running edonkey with a lot of connection. The compaq server Nic is supposed to be very stable. I wonder if it was caused by too many concurrent connection on the Win2000 box causing this problem. My FBSD Box runs on FreeBSD 5.1 Release. I don't know if it is the driver issue. Does it have any side effect that the system keeps showing the messages ? Thanks! It may be that the cd9660 filesystem cannot correctly represent files
over 2gb, so mkisofs skips files larger than that. Mkisofs explicitly
rejects files over 2^31 bytes:

Ogle and sound problems...
Hey, I already posted once about this, and after a little more investigation, I'm finding that the dsp device is simply busy. I created a test account, with the .xinitrc file simply containing: exec ogle /dev/acd1 and the DVD played with sound (although choppy, but I'm following the other post). I would like to use Ogle from inside KDE, but I'm not sure, and have not seen anything in google or these posts about this problem. How do I make ogle use either the aRTS server, or just force it to use the /dev/dsp method? Two extra buttons on mouse.
Hey all, I'm getting excited, as, after using FreeBSD since 1998, I'm finally getting around to making the GUI more friendly for myself and the fortunate people who use my systems... I finally got the wheel to work on my Trackball Explorer, but I'm not finding anything that helps me map the extra two buttons on the side of the mouse to functions inside KDE. I figured that, like the keyboard, they would have keymaps that I could just direct to, say, F20 and F21, but, alass, they do not, as far as I can tell. Perhaps some of you have gotten this working? I love the scrolling feature, especially in X. I have to say, it's one thing that Microsoft did right. If you use ipfw that's available with the base system (you have to add an option to your kernel config to enable), then you get a very configurable firewall with the ability to port forward. If all you wanted to do is forward traffic on a few ports and leave everything else wide open, your rule set would be as simple as: ipfw add fwd 192.168.0.7 from any 5060 to me ipfw add allow from any to any Of course I recommend that you do not leave your system wide open but if Port Sentry is already filtering your traffic to your liking, you can just use the forwarding feature of ipfw. See man ipfw and the handbook for more info. Note: The above assumes that ipfw sees a dial-up interface just like any other network interface. I've never used dial-up but have had no problems using ipfw to forward packets with regular Ethernet interfaces. YMMV. Logging users activity with termlog
Hello! FreeBSD 4.9-RC. termlog 1.0.2-STABLE. I want to log users activity on my box. 1. I'd like to run termlog -u UID as soon as user with UID log in. How should I do it? 2. I noticed that running "screen program" and then leaving it (quit, not detach) makes termlog to quit with: termlog: fatal: unable to poll device.: Bad file descriptor User is still logged in. The same quit reason is when user don't use screen and logout. What's wrong? 3. -t switch should put timestamps in the output file but it doesn't. Files created with -t and without it are identical. The only things it will NOT do include connecting to a dial-up internet provider and it can't act as a proxy server, but you shouldn't need that with broadband, anyways. What's great about the portforwarding is that it's not like the older ones, where you just told it what computer was the DMZ and EVERYTHING incoming got forwarded. Now, you can tell it that port 22 is ssh and your ssh server is on the internal 192.168.0.4 computer and the web server is operating on port 80 on 192.168.0.5, etc, etc. I hope this helps. I fixed the problem...
It seems that I cannot specify my shell command within ppp.conf, I have to use a
ppp.linkup file and specify from within there. It works correctly now.

Is the external IP address of your VPN device an internet routable IP address? I know that if you are on an ADSL without static IP (like Qwest or MSN adsl) the IP address that is automatically assigned via DHCP by the DSL modem is private IP space, and therefore your VPN will not work. I resorted to getting an Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem and plugging it into a FreeBSD box for my Qwest MSN and set my VPN to go between the 2 FreeBSD boxes. This gave my firewall/gateway a real IP address. Granted, it is dynamic and I have to change my vpn every time my IP address get's re-negotiated, but at least it works. I am trying to figure out a way to dynamicly change the VPN config on both ends when ppp comes up so I don't have to do it manually. I've followed a couple of the tutorials available on the web, including the one in the FreeBSD manual, for setting up an IPsec tunnel between two FreeBSD machines, but I am trying to connect to a netgear VPN device. I'm getting past phase 1 and getting an SA but the traffic will not flow. Without quoting every piece of config, does anybody have any pointers on what might differ between the tutorials on FreeBSD <-> FreeBSD and talking to a VPN device? Perhaps this will help. /usr/ports/net/bounce pkg-descr: A little program to bounce tcp connections to another machine/port. By default it listens on port 1523. /usr/ports/net/rinetd pkg-descr: rinetd redirects TCP connections from one IP address and port to another. rinetd is a single-process server which handles any number of connections to the address/port pairs specified in the file /etc/rinetd.conf. Since rinetd runs as a single process using nonblocking I/O, it is able to redirect a large number of connections without a severe impact on the machine. This makes it practical to run TCP services on machines inside an IP masquerading firewall. rinetd does not redirect FTP, because FTP requires more than one socket. rinetd also supports basic allow/deny access control and logging. Background I am currently running freeBSD 4.8 on a box as a) a gateway for the house for internet access on dialup permanant IP , domain etc b) using apache for a web server hosting a domain and virtual domains c ) Qmail for mail d ) Squid proxy for the childrens computers access ( saves on bandwidth ) e) ProFtp as FTP Server f ) DNS g ) Ssh h) All on a dial up account i ) port Sentry j ) etc I need to run a couple of programs inside the lan where ports are directed to them from outside the lan eg all the above services are located on the Bsd box ( 192.168.x.x ) and i need to direct port 5060 to 192.168.0.7 ( for arguments sake ) Not being very knowlegable about the inner workings of FreeBSD ( but learning slowly ) I have decided that seeing as this is really only a temporary exercise ( perhaps a month , and to compound everything in a couple of months the BSD box will also be shifting to broadband ), that I would use FreeSCO ( www.freesco.org) as a NEW gateway / port redirector . I am going to forward my current services above to my current BSD box and the NEW PORTS direct to the Win box(s) that I need to test this software on . My thoughts were to leave the current gateway as 192.160.0.1 and the FreeSCO box name it 192.168.0.254 . sasl 2.1.15 - applications crash when authenticating
I've been trying to get Cyrus imapd 2.1.15 installed on FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE machine. Initially I used cyrus-sasl 2.1.13 because that is what is in the ports tree for 5.1 (although it is broken when used with MySQL 4). I've just tried using sasl 2.1.15 but still get the same problem. That is, when a user tries to authenticate to imapd it dies with a signal 11, or on authenticating to Postfix the cause of death is reported as signal 6. Either way, authenticating to either app is impossible. I'm using auxprop, have checked permissions on sasldb2 and have trawled everything I can find for answers and go no where. CKermit Connect Problems
Hi list... I've been using CKermit 6, 7, and now 8.0 (installed from the ports) for some time now... I've been using this to dial (with a US Robotics external modem) to various customers running SCO (Yuck) Openserver 5.0.5. Recently, I switched to a new FreeBSD Server, running 4.8-STABLE, and now when I dial with Kermit to my customersm it dials and connects, but I never get a login prompt... Does anyone have any idea's ??? cvsup: Error code 1
For some reason the portupgrade / or make reinstall does not work on any of the outdated ports. Get the same error on all of them. Error code 1. I've tried: portsclean -C portsclean -DD make index portsdb -Ufu pkgdb -F Nothing seems to get the ports back into shape. The whole cvsup / portupgrade -ra had been working for a while. Not sure what could have messed it up. Is there a way I can get all the necessary indexes / databases required by cvsup / portupgrade / pkg_add recreated? The only way I know how to fix this is to reinstall. There must be a better way. Any assistance or tips would be very much appreciated. Hmmm.. redirect.pl is not part of any apache software installation I've ever dealt with. Neither is it part of the apache_1.3.28 sources. You can do that with ATX3 (detect busy but do not detect dial tone) Also, you can store this X3 in a profile so you won't need to type this in future. RAID-1 pre-install question
I am having trouble setting up the partitions for my hardware RAID-1 (a Promise RAID controller) with the latest version of FreeBSD. My partitions come up as ad4 ad6 and ar0. When I try and partition the ad4 drive with the normal partitons it gives me the error that it "cant write partition info to the disk." When I try and partition the ar0, it will write the partition info successfully. But after it's done trying to write a file to it will give me the error of "not enough space left on the disk." Samba Change Password from Windows using ctrl-alt-delete
I have seen this question posted a number of times without an answer, and there's a bug from June in the ports database regarding this issue. Running 4.8 and samba 2.2.8a. I receive the following error when trying to change a samba password from a windows client: "The system cannot change your password now because the domain is not available". Your question is not clear. Are you trying to use ppp to dial out to your ISP to get internet access OR are you trying to get ppp to answer an in coming call to your FBSD box? You have to provide more details about your configuration before people can help you, we do not have ESP to read your mind. CKermit connect problem...
Hi list... I've been using CKermit 6, 7, and now 8.0 (installed from the ports) for some time now... I've been using this to dial (with a US Robotics external modem) to various customers running SCO (Yuck) Openserver 5.0.5. Recently, I switched to a new FreeBSD Server, running 4.8-STABLE, and now when I dial with Kermit to my customersm it dials and connects, but I never get a login prompt... Does anyone have any idea's ??? Give Evolution a try, i find it's a perfect substitute for outlook, tho i have no experience with exchange i think there is something called "connector" which will allow evolution to connect with exchange. Handling of multiple Pythons on the same system
How do you manage multiple versions of Python on the same machine? I'm running Zope on one of my servers and it requires Python 2.1 (and has known issues with later versions). I want to install other applications that require Python 2.3. I've installed the lang/python (2.3) and lang/python21 ports and everything is basically OK. Except, now, that I want to use the databases/py-psycopg port with both versions of Python. Whenever I build the port, I get either: py21-psycopg-1.1.7 or py23-psycopg-1.1.7 depending on whether /usr/local/bin/python is a link to python2.1 or python2.3 at the port's build time. Those packages are mutually exclusive; they both write some files to the same place, and write other files to version-specific paths. This is quickly becoming a hassle. I don't think you understand how device nodes work; they're not magic, and don't add devices into the kernel. Make World and Sound Help
I have been trying to update my system using make world for the last 5 days and I am getting no where. All my searches for an answer comes up short. I have wipe my drive clean and re-install BSD from the cd and start a new make world. make -j4 buildworld -> will work fine. but as soon I try to make buildkernel KERNCONF=RODKERNEL I would get a stop error, each one different from the one before. This is from the last attempt I made: nt /usr/src/sys/dev/cardbus/cardbus.c:390: error: (near initialization for 'cardbus_methods[35]') ***Error code 1 Stop in /usr/obj/usr/src/sys/RODKERNEL. ***Error code 1 Stop in /usr/src. ***Error code 1 Stop in /usr/src. I have tried using just GENERIC KERNEL and not my custom. Please guide me. I also tried starting over with, chflags -R noschg /usr/obj/usr rm -rf /usr/obj/usr cd /usr/src but when I issure this command make cleandir I get an Stop in /usr/src. ***Error code 1 with I bunch I stuff before that, I forgot to copy that also. oracle 9i on freebsd 5.1
Hello all, Has somebody gotten around to install the Linux edition of Oracle 9i in a FreeBSD environment on a i386 box? I know about the oracle howto at http:// www.scc.nl/~marcel/howto-oracle.html and the oracle section in the handbook, but they deal with oracle 8i and 8i and 9i are quite different animals. So, how about 5.1 with 9.i? Are there any instructions out there? Been feeding search engines for quite a while, now... Oracle on FreeBSD would be the killer app in my case - have oracle and use it or don't have oracle and use Linux. Thank you in advance for any hints. Squid and newsyslog
I'm having trouble rotating my squid access.log and cache.log with newsyslog. Here is my entry in newsyslog.conf: /usr/local/squid/logs/access.log nobody.nogroup 644 7 * 168 Z /usr/local/squid/logs/squid.pid (ditto, but for cache.log also) I have the pid file, the mode, user, and group. The new log is created just fine with the correct ownership and permissions and the old one is trimmed, but squid does not actually restart. The new logfile does not get appended to. For now, I have the newsyslog entry commented out and I'm rotating the log by hand, but sometime I'd like to get it working automatically. For some reason, newsyslog and squid aren't working well together. Any ideas? The password formats should be the same on any version of FreeBSD whatsoever, assuming they are supported at all. However, FreeBSD does not keep passwords in plain text on any version, so I'm not really clear on what you were doing in the first place. What you want to do should definitely be possible. RE: ppp confusion
You need to readman ppp some more. Using the form of the command "ppp -auto myisp" puts ppp in silence mode, you will not get an console messages that ppp is "on", you have to look in the /var/log/ppp.log for your log messages. Use just "ppp" command alone to go into manual mode and then you will get console messages. You left out all the details about your environment. Before reposting get all the details together and post them with your question. I tried ping -c 210.216.27.18 and got "invalid count of packages to transmit".I've read all the instructions I could find but each is slightly different and I'm not sure what to do next. Thanks for your response. It may well be that I end up doing exactly that to fix this issue in the short term. But there are some internal resources that I don't want to have live IP's so I am trying for the workable NAT solution. Unable to install
I have FreeBSD 4.5 Feb 2002. I had 4GB quantum harddisk. I had Installed the above version of FreeBSD along with Windows2000 and Linux. I had no problems and all the three OS were running fine. Now I upgraded my system with 60GB seagate harddisk. I created 4 partitions of 20GB, 20GB,10GB,10GB. I installed windows2000 followed by Linux and FreeBSD. After Installation at each stage i Found Windows running fine, Linux also. Finally I found BSD installation was succesful. But migrating to BSD was not possible. Is there any way I can overcome this problem? Why bother doing nat? You *could* just setup a DHCP server on the gateway for the remaining IP address and when the other 14 machines came online, they could dynamically pull the IP addy. Just set some very strict rules on the incoming packets to the rest of the internal network. This is a similar thing to what I did when I had an 8-block from Qwest a couple years ago. Is everything correct with 218, 219 and 224 lines (or comments are wrong)?
I checked several places in exception.s and vm86bios.s in sys/i386/i386/
and in all places _cpl is saved in the stack, trap() need frame{} in the
stack, so here we can't put _cpl into stack, but it is unclear for
me how above listed lines works.
How can %ebx contain saved _cpl after trap()?
