[android-developers] Android to JAVA SSL

2013-04-22 Thread Alan

I am a relative novice at Android and have had issues getting a simple SSL
connection working to a java server.

I know the java server works as I tested it using the same keystore as the
server and a java client.

The Android client does send something as the java server accepts a
connection and displays a null value for the variable 'temp', and no error
message.

Android Client:

 try{

 String error = test;
 sslsocketfactory = (SSLSocketFactory) SSLSocketFactory.getDefault();
 s = (SSLSocket) sslsocketfactory.createSocket(192.168.2.101, port);

outStream = s.getOutputStream();
outStreamWriter = new OutputStreamWriter(outStream);
bufferedWriter = new BufferedWriter(outStreamWriter);

bufferedWriter.write(error + \n);
bufferedWriter.flush();

  } //end try
  catch (UnknownHostException e) {e.printStackTrace();}
  catch (IOException e) {e.printStackTrace();}

  finally{
 if (s != null){
 try {s.close();}
 catch (IOException e) {e.printStackTrace();}
 }
 }//end finally
}

I have not specified a truststore as i am unsure of how the mechanism works
or how to implement this, and think this is probably the issue.

[android-developers] Android Tablet Lockdown

2012-10-25 Thread Alan Honeycutt
I'm attempting to lock down an android tablet for kiosk-like functionality
and have explored the existing application options for doing so, but have
not found anything that meets my needs. Specifically, the tablet needs to
be able to operate without a password in normal mode, locking the user
out of any functionality other than that provided by the approved app (or
apps); however, the tablet must not allow the user to bypass the kiosk
functionality (for example, by entering safe mode) without a password.
The apps that I've used so far get around the safe mode problem by
forcing you to provide a screen lock password, but this means the user has
to supply a password each time the tablet is locked, which won't work for
my use case (wherein users will take their tablets home and won't keep them
on constantly).

My suspicion is that the functionality that I'm seeking can't be achieved
at the application level and will require a custom ROM, but I thought I'd
poll this group before embarking down that path. Any ideas?

I'm making use of a bluetooth communication but however when two

Re: [android-developers] Re: How to get accurate time stamps from Android GPS location.

2012-04-22 Thread Alan Smith
I can assure you that the time reported by the quoted gpsclock site is NOT
the time reported by GPS devices. It's really easy to demonstrate: Compare
what you see on your GPS with what's displayed from the web site. The
quoted time is around 15 seconds ahead of the time from the GPS device. I
wonder what that's really all about?

On Mon, Apr 23, 2012 at 5:08 AM, lbendlin l...@bendlin.us wrote:

 That explains the +/- some seconds. As I mentioned already, GPS chips on
 phones are cheap and cheerful. They use all kinds of dirty tricks to cut
 corners (AGPS etc). You probably won't find two smartphone models (even
 from the same OEM) that have the same GPS behavior .

Thanks. I had my code in the onHandleIntent() method, so it was, as you

 That does not mean that there are multiple instances of the service.
 onStartCommand() will be called for each startService() call, so if

 N calls to startService() will result in N runs through your work.

2011-09-16 Thread Alan
I may post this to a new subject, but I'll try here. Two days after
giving this code sample, I found it doesn't work on Android ver. 2.3!
My phone (LG Ally) and emulator were running version 2.2.2 the code
below was working fine. I had a co-worker run the program on his phone
 it didn't work. His phone was an HTC running 2.3. So, I changed my
emulator to version 2.3 and sure enough it didn't work in the same
way. GET was working, but POST did not on 2.3. Well... actually the
Response code was the same, 200, so it worked right? But, the value it
returned was null. I've been trying to find any mention of a
difference like this between versions on this list, but no luck so
far. The only clue I have is that a bit after a try at a POST, I get

SntpClient Request time failed: java.net.socketException: Address
family not supported by protocol

I'm not sure that is related to this problem, but it's all I have to
go on so far (that and it works on 2.2 and not 2.3!)

Anybody have any ideas about this problem?

[android-developers] Re: HttpURLConnection with POST method

2011-09-16 Thread Alan
Found the problem on 2.3 in the emulator at least. It works if I add

  urlConnection.setRequestProperty(Content-Type, application/x-www-
form-urlencoded);

after the   urlConnection.setRequestMethod(POST);

line in the example in my earlier posting.

The link I worked from (also given above) specifically said the line
wasn't needed, but I guess it is. It works for me now in the emulator
in both 2.2.2 and 2.3.

[android-developers] Determine Sender of Broadcast

2011-06-17 Thread Alan
Hello,

Is there any way to discover which app package sent a broadcast? If
the sender includes their package name as an extra in the Intent, can
you verify the sender is who they say they are?

I came across this post (http://www.unwesen.de/2011/04/10/android-
intent-sender-verification/) which describes implementing a custom
handshake protocol using a Service naming convention to verify the
sender if they supply their package name. I can also imagine doing
something similar using broadcasts by using Intent.setPackage() to
limit the scope of the broadcast.

Does anyone know of an Android API based way to verify the sender
package?

Thanks,
Alan

[android-developers] Re: Build broken after latest updates.

2011-03-07 Thread Alan Swire
I had the same problem after the latest updates as well. I went
searching for answers and found your posts which made me glad that i
wasn't alone :)

I did discover the problem and cure this morning (at least for my
projects) - go to Project Properties and select Java Build path. Then,
On the Order and Export tab I moved the gen build above the src build.
I can now merrily rebuild my projects even after a Clean and Build
Automatically (which I couldn't do before this fix on the latest
Eclipse / Android SDK updates).

[android-developers] Adding multiple child views

2011-02-08 Thread alan
I have developed a layout to which i want to add multiple copies of the same
child view. the child view is defined in a xml file. To add each child to
its parent i am calling:
ChildView childView = new ChildView (context);
linearLayout.addView(childView ,new LayoutParams(LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT,
LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));
the constructor of ChildView is as follows:
public ChildView (Context context)
{
super(context);
inflate(context, R.layout.child_view, this);
checkBox = (CheckBox) findViewById(R.id.checkbox);
}
everything is working correctly and i can manipulate each checkbox
correctly. however when the phone is rotated the restored state for each
checkbox is the state of the last child. in this particular case I don't
actually need to save the state as it can be restored from elsewhere so have
managed to work around the problem by adding
protected void dispatchRestoreInstanceState(SparseArrayParcelable
container)
{
dispatchThawSelfOnly(container);
}
to ChildView. however if i want to do something similar in future and do
need to save the state what are my options? do I have to handle save and
restore of state in ChildView? do i need to somehow assign a unique id to
each checkbox (how would these be generated?).

PS

is there any api or internal function i can use?

2. have you use any electronic dictionary before.
in the past , i can control the screen easily by lower level language.
i can highlight some word than cross search another dictionary.

but now what i can do is,
i have a button to turn on something.
then the user can highlight some word,
then the apps will copy the highlight word,
then user click the cross search button.

what i want to do is.
the user dont need to click button to turn on this function.
they can directly highlight the word then click the cross search.

Re: [android-developers] How does Android handles PCM data from voice call?

 Dear experts,

 I am trying to understand whether or not Android handles the phone
 conversation's audio stream or it is done outside Android's framework.
 Specifically, if, for example, Android controls a cellular processor
 that provides PCM interface for voice conversation and there is a need
 to send audio over Bluetooth instead of using mic/speakers, how this
 is handled?
 There are two ways here to the best of my understanding:

 1. Route PCM from cellular to audio port on Android CPU, then let
 Android receive the stream and send it to BT stack for processing and
 eventually pushing to BT hardware over HCI
 2. Have Android control a HW switch that will route PCM directly to BT
 HW using direct PCM interface

 Which one applies? Is there a preferable way (best usage of resources
 provided by Android)?

It depends on hardware implementation and it is not an Android issue.
In some smartphones the audio from Baseband processor is not routed to
Application Processor. This is why Call Recorder application doesn't
work in all smartphone, you can see a listing of supported smartphones
here:

2010-08-26 Thread Alan
I downloaded the SDK, added it to Eclipse, wrote HelloWorld, ran it in
the simulator successfully, but cannot figure out how to run it on my
new LG Ally phone.

 I can mount the phone as a disk browse folders on the phone, so I
know the USB physically is connnected, but all the documentation
indicates that ADB should show on the device manager in Windows Vista.
If it does then I can load the driver, but since I don't see anything
about ADB I can't do that.

When I attach the phone, eventually a window comes up asking for a
device driver. I choose to Browse my computer for software and give
it the USB folder in my SDK installation, but it almost immediately
claims it can't find a driver.

 I tried these other things to no avail: set USB debugging on,
allowed Unknown sources, unmounted the SD card in Eclipse set
debuggable to true in the Android manifest (desperation!).

I feel I'm missing something basic simple, but after looking through
 trying everything have not been able to figure out what it is. I
even called LG to see if they could help, but other than showing me
how to mount it as a disk, they didn't know how to help. Thank you,

Alan

[android-developers] Re: LG Ally, Windows Vista, downloaded USB 3, but ADB does not show on Device Manager

2010-08-26 Thread Alan
Hello Kostya, thank you for your reply. I knew I'd forgotten to
mention something -- I had tried what you mentioned, and after seeing
your post, I was encouraged to try again, but I still can't get it to
work. Here's what I did (shortened version!)

1) Turned debugging on on the Ally
2) Plugged the USB in
3) Looked at device manager: when I plugged it in, these things
appeared:
a) Under Disk drives: GOOGLE Mass storage USB device
b) Under Other devices:LG Mobile USB Modem
   There are 5 LG Mobile USB Modem entries. If I look at the first
one, the Hardware Ids entry says:

USB\VID_1004PID_618REV_0100MI_00
USB\VID_1004PID_618MI_00

The next one is the same except it says MI_01 and so on incremented
for each of the entries.

The Device description for each of the entries is LG Mobile USB
Modem.

4) I cut and pasted the entry for ; HTC Dream (the first entry) and
changed the entry to

; LG Ally
%SingleAdbInterface%= USB_Install, USB\VID_1004PID_618
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_1004PID_618MI_00

5) That didn't work. I tried LGE Ally, LG Mobile Ally, LG Mobile
USB Modem, Ally, LG, LGE... all to no avail

6) Iterating in with that I started changing the entry itself to match
the others more by changing PID to PID_0618. I tried putting the
REV_0100 in.

7) I tried many things like the above. Nothing worked. Windows always
would come back and say (quickly), Windows was unable to install your
LG Mobile USB Modem. It seems like that's a clue, since I want ADB
and not a modem, but I'm at a loss as to what to try next. The folder
I always gave windows to look in was the usb_driver folder within my
Android SDK installation.

It could well be that I'm missing the particular combination of things
that'll make it work, but I don't know what it is. Any further ideas
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you again,

Alan

   Alan,

 Apparently all adb usb interfaces are the same, so a working (although
 a hack-ish) solution is to edit android_winusb.inf and add your phone's
 USB vendor and device id.

 This is for Moto Sholes platofrm (Moto Droid / Milestone):

 ;Moto Sholes
 %SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_22B8PID_41DB
 %CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_22B8PID_41DBMI_01

 Add your own by following the same pattern. You can find out the right
 VID_ and PID_ values in the device manager.

[android-developers] Re: LG Ally, Windows Vista, downloaded USB 3, but ADB does not show on Device Manager

2010-08-26 Thread Alan
Hi Kostya, well, I checked the Google Mass Storage USB device by
mounting the phone as a disk -- it shows up as an L drive. I can
then successfully navigate folders on the phone from my PC. If I then
go to Device Manager and disable the Google Mass Storage device,
then the L drive disappears from my Computer window. If I enable
it, the L drive reappears. So it seems that the L drive (listed
under Portable Devices in the Device Manager) is dependent on the
Google Mass Storage USB device -- it doesn't seem like it has anything
to do with ADB. But, I don't know...

Thanks for the info on the semicolon in the .inf file -- I suppose I
should've looked that up somewhere before I decided to iterate
everything.

BTW, the Hardware Ids for the Mass Storage device look nothing like
the other entries in the Android .inf file -- it's 7 lines of text --
no PIDs or VIDs in sight.

Were you possibly suggesting I try to use one of those lines in
android_winwusb.inf?

I went to your blog saw the illustration of the USB modes you could
choose from. I tried similar things on my Ally, but was given no
choices -- either USB debug mode on or off. Again, maybe there's some
secret menu I don't know about.

But, thank you for your time. If you have any other ideas -- or
elaboration on how I might use your idea that the Google Mass Storage
is actually ADB... I of course would welcome them. Or, do you know
any resource at Google I could go to? I can't seem to find any way to
ask the Android folks a question directly... Or any other resource?

 those are just comments. Devices are matches based on their vendor and
 device ID's.

 Also, if your phone has multiple USB connection modes, you might want to try
 different ones. My Moto Milestone only shows up in adb when I select Portal

 in case your phone has something similar).

 If phone settings are correct, you should get an adb device in the Windows

 whose vendor and device ID's you should use in the .inf file.

 I wish there was an easier and more consistent way to enable adb in

2010-08-26 Thread Alan
Success for this stage!!! My own fault!!! After checking the device
manager for the 1000th time, I noticed
that the PID of 618 was actually 618E. I changed that and changed
the MI_0x to match one of the LG Mobile USB Modem
entries and then told it to reload the driver pointed it to the
Android and after a bit, I got

Android Phone Android Composite USB Interface in the device

the E and somehow obscured each other or, maybe I

[android-developers] Re: LG Ally, Windows Vista, downloaded USB 3, but ADB does not show on Device Manager

2010-08-26 Thread Alan
Well, after 2 days off on, I am thrilling to Hello World on my LG
Ally.

After realizing that my problem with ADB was that I'd typed in the PID
wrong (see earlier post),
I still couldn't make adb see the device (adb devices).

But, the thread connected Motorola droid not recognized by adb did
help some, especially the post by authorwjf.
I still don't know why I got 5 LG Mobile USB modem entries in the
device manager, but one by one I converted them to
Android Composite ADB Interface using the sequence of steps given by
authorwjf. The key for me was to LET ME PICK FROM A LIST OF DEVICE
DRIVERS ON MY COMPUTER, instead of BROWSE MY COMPUTER I was
given a choice of Android Composite ADB Interface, Android ADB
Interface, and Android Bootloader Interface. I converted several modem
entries to the Composite, then one to the plain ADB, and finally one
to the Bootloader Interface. That did it, whatever the Bootloader
interface does, suddenly adb saw my phone. Eclipse presented me with
a choice of devices (emulator and phone) when I hit Run, and when I
chose the phone, it worked!

Sorry for the verbiage, but I have tried so many things that I have to
admit that I'm not sure what order of things caused it to work. For
example, maybe loading the USB 3 stuff successfully allowed windows to
know about the Android drivers (eventually) that allowed me to
eventually choose between the different Android device drivers. But,
in any case, many thanks to Kostya, authorwjf, and others who've
posted on this subject.

[android-developers] Re: Switching between normal view and glsurfaceview (game loading screen)

2010-08-18 Thread alan
just render the loading screen in opengl

On Aug 18, 7:56 am, Jason jason.poli...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi all,

 I'm trying to find the best way to implement a loading screen when
 using a GLSurfaceView.

 Basically the situation is this:

 The app (game) loads a bunch of textures into VRAM when the GL surface
 is created (onSurfaceCreated), however these textures are only for the
 current level of the game.  When the player reaches the end of the
 level I need to remove these textures from VRAM and load the new ones.

 Previously (during development) each level was a complete load/unload
 of the Activity, which works fine, however this creates a bunch of
 unnecessary overhead as I don't need to reload the world for a simple
 level progression.  So I have been experimenting with different ways
 to overlay a standard view (which is my loading screen) over the top
 of the GLSurfaceView while the level data is loaded.

 This has created some problems for me:

 1. Because the GLSurfaceView is not actually destroyed, the
 onSurfaceCreated call is only made once and hence the opportunity to
 load textures is gone.  To overcome this, I have introduced a flag
 into the Renderer thread which will load up the textures in the first
 call to onDrawFrame after the level is loaded.  I don't particularly
 like this, but can't seen any other solution.

 2. I don't seem to be able to find a way to effectively switch views
 in my Activity.  I initially set the view (setContentView(...)) to the
 loading screen (i.e NOT the GLSurfaceView), then the actual level load
 is done asynchronously and when complete calls back to the main
 activity thread which then performs a second call to setContentView()
 with the GLSurfaceView instance.  This works the first time, but
 thereafter I can't seem to get the loading view to become visible.  If
 I use setVisibility(View.VISIBLE) on the loading view it doesn't
 display, and if I perform a further call to setContentView() my
 GLSurfaceView never comes back... that is, after subsequently calling
 setContentView with the GLSurfaceView I get nothing displayed... no
 errors, but my loading screen basically never disappears.

 So.. does anyone out there have a good approach to solving this?  That
 is, how to best implement a loading screen to hide the process of
 bootstrapping opengl resources etc.

 Thanks!

 A handful of Android devices may have built-in radio tuners. I suspect
 none have built-in radio tuners and also have activities with a
 documented means for other applications to launch a radio station. I'm
 not saying it's a bad idea, but I'm just skeptical that anyone has
 done it.

 One feature which i did not fiund on the Android 2.0 is the ability to

 Whilst on a call i would like to be able to select contacts and send

 I've sean all the different dialler apps. but nothing allows you to
 select from the contacts list.

 Is this a feature upcoming in the Android OS updates or is there
 already an app. that anyone knows about that allows this feature,
 which is common on all other mobile os's?

There is a request for this feature:

Really this feature will very interesting.

[android-developers] JUnit Test error

2010-04-28 Thread alan
When defining a junit test using the static suite method android
assumes that the name of each test is also the name of a method. If
this is not the case then the test runner fails to run. The following
test class works correctly using the standard eclipse junit runner:

public class CustomTest extends TestCase
{

public CustomTest(String testName)
{
super(testName);
}

@Override
protected void runTest() throws Throwable
{
Assert.fail(Test failed);
}

public static Test suite()
{
TestSuite suite = new TestSuite();
suite.addTest(new CustomTest(test1));
return suite;
}
}

however running using the android test runner says that test1 passes!
I have managed to trace this down to the following code in
InstrumentationTestRunner:
try {
// Look for TimedTest annotation on both test class
and test method
if
(test.getClass().getMethod(testName).isAnnotationPresent(TimedTest.class))
{
mIsTimedTest = true;
mIncludeDetailedStats =
test.getClass().getMethod(testName).getAnnotation(
TimedTest.class).includeDetailedStats();
} else if
(test.getClass().isAnnotationPresent(TimedTest.class)) {
mIsTimedTest = true;
mIncludeDetailedStats =
test.getClass().getAnnotation(
TimedTest.class).includeDetailedStats();
}
} catch (SecurityException e) {
throw new IllegalStateException(e);
} catch (NoSuchMethodException e) {
throw new IllegalStateException(e);
}
The thrown IllegalStateException doesn't seem to be caught or reported
anywhere which is I think why the eclipse plugin incorrectly reports
the tests have passed. As this code is called before the test is run
the test code is never called.

[android-developers] Re: JUnit Test error

2010-04-28 Thread alan
A really nasty workaround is to override the getName method on the
test class:

@Override
public String getName()
{
for (StackTraceElement stackElement :
Thread.currentThread().getStackTrace())
{
if
(stackElement.getClassName().equals(android.test.InstrumentationTestRunner
$WatcherResultPrinter))
{
if (stackElement.getMethodName().equals(startTest))
{
return bugFix;
}
}
}
return super.getName();
}

and to declare a method called bugFix in the class. This allows the
test to run but the test names in eclipse all come up as bugfix.

Telnet is not a secure protocol, anyway you can use adb shell to get

[android-developers] Re: Are you localizing an app? Do you want to be?

2009-05-24 Thread Alan Jones

I had a suggestion regarding multiple languages and apks etc.

There are a few issues I can see. The bandwidth as you've mentioned,
the management of multiple .apks as others have mentioned in this
thread
and then there's people needing to buy the application multiple times
if
they wish to get more than one localization with the split system.

I'd like to suggest that changes go into the market rather than on the
developer end for this. It would be useful if the market gave the user
the choice of which locales they wanted. It could just store a
stripped
version of the .apk on the server along with each of the locales taken
from the .apk we submit with all locales included. Then pushes an .apk
with the required combination of localized assets included.

It avoids redundant effort that would be taken again and again and
gives
the user the most flexible experience that could be achieved short of
it
dynamically downloading assets separately so it only ever sent the
minimal .apk for the app. Though if that could be achieved whilst
maintaining backward compatibility that'd be even better.

Cheers,

Alan.

[android-developers] Android apps/apks and native libraries

2009-05-24 Thread Alan Jones

Hi All,

Schlepping around the /data/data directory of my G1 I happened to
notice
there is a lib directory for every app. Does this mean it's possible
for us to
create native libraries, appropriate java binding and then use them in
an
android app and package it in an apk?

If so, how? :) I'm guessing it is possible seeing HTC appear to have
done
exactly this with their IME.

It's really important I find this out as I believe it might come up if
I'm on
who wants to be a millionaire. Thanks heaps.

Cheers,

Alan.

 They probably used native libraries and JNI, but I doubt they packaged
 them as APKs installed over the Android Market. HTC can put stuff right
 on the firmware.

Yeah - being an OEM puts them in a different position from the rest of
us.
They could make massive changes without worrying about official SDK
support at all.

Cheers,

Alan.

[android-developers] BroadcastReceivers not receiving PendingIntents

2009-05-20 Thread Alan Jones

Hi All,

I've had an issue where no matter how I've tried to set it up I'm
finding the BroadcastReceivers aren't receiving any PendingIntents. A
look through LogCat confirms that the intents are launched, but
they're not being executed.

I managed to make a simple(ish) repro case. If you take the
SimpleWiktionary widget by Jeff Sharkey
http://code.google.com/p/wiktionary-android/
and make the following changes plus any required imports.

Replace the Service's onStart with this
code
public static class UpdateService extends Service {
@Override
public void onStart(Intent intent, int startId) {
// Build the widget update for today
RemoteViews updateViews = buildUpdate(this);

// Push update for this widget to the home screen
ComponentName thisWidget = new ComponentName(this,
WordWidget.class);
AppWidgetManager manager = AppWidgetManager.getInstance
(this);
manager.updateAppWidget(thisWidget, updateViews);

Context context = getBaseContext();
long nextAlarm = System.currentTimeMillis() + 15000;
Intent alarmIntent = new Intent(context, WordWidget.class);
PendingIntent pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(context,
0 /* no requestCode */, alarmIntent, 0 /* no
flags */);

AlarmManager alarmManager = (AlarmManager)
context.getSystemService(android.app.Activity.ALARM_SERVICE);
alarmManager.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, nextAlarm,
pendingIntent);

}
/code

and add an override to onReceive like this
code
@Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
final String action = intent.getAction();
Log.d(WordWidget, Action:  + action);

super.onReceive(context, intent);
}
/code

Then add the widget to your desktop and watch LogCat. After 15 seconds
you'll see the intent getting launched, but nothing logged with the
tag WordWidget.

I've got no idea what I've done wrong, anybody having a well, there's
your problem. moment?

Cheers,

Alan.

Yeah - it's limited, but if all you're after is having the background

easy
enough to build from scratch anyhow :) On that topic is that
background
included in android already? I didn't manage to find it.

If so it'd be better if I could use
android.R.drawable.whateveritscalled for

I'd actually prefer that as it'd mean the widget would match the

[android-developers] ContentProvider queries, Contacts and the SDK docs

2009-05-15 Thread Alan Jones

Hi All,

A couple of questions. First thing I was wondering is where to log
bugs in the docs.
The ContentProvider query() docs are missing selectionArgs in the
example code. It also
uses the deprecated addId instead of ContentUris.withAppendedId().

With regards to the selection options - how exactly can these handle?
I've seen a couple
of places where a something + =' + somevalue ' is used, but I'm
specifically wondering
if it can handle IN clauses or if there's some form of or statement I
can use to check for
a variety of values in a particular column rather than just the one.

Last question is about the Contacts PERSON_ID and how long-lived that
is. It is guaranteed
to never change (though may be removed obviously). Well not truly
guaranteed but will only
cycle after it runs out of unused integers. Or may they change value
as contacts are removed?

Cheers,

Alan .

[android-developers] Sms Broadcasts and Logs

2009-05-15 Thread Alan Jones

Hi All,

I want to know whenever someone is called, calls, smsed or smses.

I figured for the calls I'd use the phone state change to trigger when
I should check the CallLog provider again. I couldn't see any direct
way of getting broadcasts from the CallLog. Did I miss it?

For SMSes I'm having more trouble. I'd like to know whenever and SMS
is sent or received. Being able to receive STATUS_ON_SIM_READ and
STATUS_ON_SIM_SENT would be great, but from what I've read in the Sms
Manager that would depend on the sending application. I can't seem to
find any evidence of a default one that android places when it sends.
Any suggestions on how I could find out about SMSes? I also couldn't
find an sms log provider or anything similar. Is there such a thing?

Alan.

[android-developers] Swipe tab view

2009-05-06 Thread Alan Jones

Hi All,

I want to make a View which takes up part of the screen, is swipable
(swipeable?) but where each screen width section may scroll vertically
(i.e. have a different length of content from the others).

Above it there'd be a header and tabs (to give an alternative to a
swipe gesture for non-touchscreen devices).

Is creating a view that's screen width and the needed height for each
the way to go? Then make a layout that has those views in it and
panning that layout?

I searched the list, but nothing I found dealt with varying height
content across pages.

[android-developers] Views, ListViews and Adapters

2009-04-20 Thread Alan Jones

Hi All,

Just looking at options for data updating affecting items in a
ListView and have hit
a few issues/queries.

There seems to only be notifyDataSetChanged() and
notifyDataSetInvalidated(). While I
could use notifyDataSetChanged() I am most likely in my case to have
the scenario where
additional data has been added and it seems inefficient to say the
data has changed,
which can only be resolved by calling getCount() and then getView()
for all displayed items
where knowing the data has been appended would just require adjusting
the scrollbar. Is
there some way to achieve something similar to this as the market
seems happy populating
dynamically in a manner that seems to reflect my desired behaviour
(unless it just refreshes
it all that fast).

Next question is the situation where the data behind just one item has
changed. For instance
I may wish to download icons in a background thread, but display
available information with a
placeholder icon. The best idea I've had so far is to store a map of
indexes and views in my
adapter which I can check against then call getView directly myself to
have the view recycled
with the new data. I'd just need additional logic to handle removing
the map when the view gets
destroyed or when it's recycled in getView. Either a bi-directional
map (do we have one of those?)
or two maps. Is the above likely to be my best approach or is there
something built-in/better to
get it done.

Cheers,

Alan.

[android-developers] Using SQLite for caching and serialization options

2009-04-13 Thread Alan Jones

Hi All,

I've got some classes which inherit from a single class, but differ
significantly in the data they store.

They get returned in a list of the parent class so there's a mix of
the two. Because there could be a
bunch of these in the results I'd like to cache them into an sqlite db
and have an adapter which pulls
data from there as the listview requires it.

Seeing as they're so different I can't just dump required info into
columns in a db (particularly given one type has a hashmap).

Is it possible to use bundle and parcels? The bundle forcing it to be
flattened? I couldn't see a way to dump a parcel to a string to push
it into sqlite.

This leaves me with just serializing objects and streaming it into a
string before I'm out of ideas.

Any suggestions on the most efficient way to deal with this? I'm also
not sure on the overhead of serializing and retrieving objects for the
db. I can see it quite possibly ripping through battery.

Cheers,

Alan.

         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.photos);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.photos.name);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.photos);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.photos.name);

         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.videos);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.videos.name);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.videos);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.videos.name);

         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.tones);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.tones.name);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.tones);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.tones.name);

         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.graphics);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.graphics.name);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.graphics);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.graphics.name);

         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.music);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.music.name);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.music);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.music.name);

         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.recordings);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.recordings.name);
         System.getProperty(fileconn.dir.memorycard.recordings);

2008-12-18 Thread alan

you need the android.permission.INTERNET then you can use the standard
java sockets api

 Hi

 If I need to open a new socket in Andriod platform, do I need to set
 some permission before it will work? I currently get an IOException
 when I new a Socket.

 Thank you.

[android-developers] Re: Best Practices for Image Buttons?

2008-12-18 Thread alan

if you use a state drawable then you can do this you need the
selector xml element, its not very well documented but if you have
the android source you can get some examples from there

 My goal is to have a method for creating buttons in that I can use
 custom backgrounds (one for normal and one for highlighted/selected
 state) and use the normal text drawing on top of it.

 Just setting the background on a regular Button works except for no
 highlighting.  ImageButton can't draw text.

 Does this require a custom class?  If so, would it be better to extend
 Button or ImageButton?  I really want all the regular button
 functionality with focus and selection but just using my 2 background
 images.

 Also - if anyone has done this, can I get a little code snippet?  I'd
 like to avoid reinventing the wheel.

 Thanks!
