I think it's about six or seven or so, , he offers to teach you magic, and gives you the spell talisman first, though since I went with the option to say I prefer girls and transform him into a her, I don't know if Arian's gender has an effect on things. You seem to be able to go on giving her/him Aqua Vitai; aka vitality tincture even after he/she has moved into camp, but I don't think it does anything else after that point.

I could be wrong, but looking at the wiki etc, it seems that the rank system is not so much that if you specialise in one thing your not able to do the others, but rather you can do everything, but are slightly better at the thing you specialise in, though I could be wrong. Since ranking is also level dependent though, I'm probably just going to wait until I've advanced a good bit and then, when I'm rank B in the other ranks, choose what skills I want to specialise in.It's actually something I really like about the game, no restrictive class systems, just different activities to focus on.

Various shops sell gps units, I found one in one of the places that sells retail supplies, EG like the shopping district corridor. You can also buy environmental suits there, but they're really expensive, which is why I haven't started on missions myself yet. At the moment doing mining to get my skills up so I can make more cash, plus occasionally trying to find that bloody engineer carson as well as complete the sewer quest.

The link in the first post has not been updated to allow some testing for interested parties first - please make a backup of important saves and report any issues - you can not downgrade save games. The obvious change is replacing Scholar's Tea with Brain Brew and Vitality Tincture with Aqua Vitae. Both new items are now available from Lumi and should transparently replace the old ones throughout the game. There are some other changes in the background but these should not be noticeable. And you can download the new version on this link. should make both raising stats and getting Arian much easier.

That will make several displays friendlier, skills, inventory, duchie, score, and most recently the survey command. It's not impossible to interpret this with a screen reader, so it's not a deal breaker, but it might be handy to have the option for a standard numeric output, if this wouldn't be too much of a pain.

Okay I've chatted to adev in that topic, and suggested some alternative names and descriptions for Schollar's tea and vitality tincture, and they'll apparently be added to Lumi's lab in the next release, which will be good. I think the eventual plan is to replace all of Giacomo's stuff and maybe other bits of the game that can't be used too, but these are imho the most urgent items because of their effect on other parts of the game. Whether more content will be added after that point I'm not sure.

Re: CoreMUD

Hi. this is awesome, I started the game in 19, but ended up leaving due to lack of activity and updates. I've recently deleted my character and intend to start from scratch. the original topic about the game with various issues is Here.. One problem I do remember, was finding your way to your quarters when you get one, since while ascii maps can be a pain, with the quarters I just had to get lucky. You might consider adding some way to get directions, or maybe a transit system.I also remember the quadcore card game being a bit problematic due to the ascii display of the cards. It might be useful to be able to get the coordinates in the grid for where you placed each card, and maybe the surrounding spaces to that card so you can play strategically. I'll be able to know more when I restart my character which I'll likely do tomorrow. In the mean time, great the game is back and development is up and running.

Okay I've progressed a bit further, I've finished the deep cave and am now level 10, once Marble has moved to camp, she'll occasionally give you items she's found foraging, one of those is vitality Tincture, I've given one to Arian at the moment, and am waiting for the god of random numbers to give me more, but this will be a slow process without a place to buy them. I now have Phylla as well, and should get amaly and sophy soon, although at this point the grindage is getting mildly irritating since other than scaling encounters like the imp lords and goblin assassins, finding monsters around my level is mildly annoying, and I'm still trying to grind for white books to find those useful defensive spells, those stingy witches keep giving me either black books or random junk, though if I remember to check the time I might try the study option in the tower.Rafael only shows up for female players according to the wiki, so none of those skills for me, though I agree about dex based perks being really useful.Btw, If I do find a black egg, I have no idea how to have sex with a goo girl (wow I didn't think I'd ever right that sentence), since while they're very easy to take out, either winning with lust or violence just leads to the game telling me they're no use in my quest.

Re: Any idea why Trials In Tainted Space became unplayable?

Actually, amusingly enough the game does have a save to file option, although the internal saving system also seems pretty consistent from what I gather so I haven't used it as yet, which as I said makes me all the more a great big dingbat for not saving bee for I ran into the honey trap . succubus milk can be got from the imps, though the best way of finding them is continuing to use the explore button, which gives some general low level encounters like imps and goblins. I'm trying to get enough succubus milk to put one over on Kelt at the moment.I'm playing a male pc as I did before, although the game has a lot of interesting female options, and usually going my route of paladin, namely focus on physical attacks with buffs that complement, so lots of white magic spells and perks for combat evasion, along with Jojo's training, though I am finding the possess special a handy route when I need to lustify something into submission, indeed I took out a level 13 spider morph that way while being level 8. I've now cleared the factory and am working up to the deep woods. I forgot that the high mountain loads on the next page of places, so for a while was stuck at level 9 having a choice of really low level, or higher level monsters, which was a miner pest, although oddly enough the high mountain seems skewed towards encountering npcs like Sophie, Mizumi  and Minerva rather than monsters, though whether this is just my weird luck I don't know.

@Defender, not using Jaws I haven't run into this placemaker thing, do you think I should mention it on the entry? I do use several of the in game graphics to find stuff EG it's easy enough to get to the description of your current room by going down from the graphics of your characters, or heck just typing the word "electrum" into the find feature and then hitting f3, since your coin total is shown on every page. I mentioned the screen reader mode, and change of time setting. I also tried disabling graphics but that didn't seem to make as much difference. I tried out the simplified and slow combat settings, but I was less crazy on these since slow combat actually increased the number of button presses needed, while missing out on combat descriptions in a turn based game was a little disappointing, though if people fancied these for spam reduction I could see the point. the two things I'd like to get rid of, are the  "zoom in" and "map crosshair" buttons under the description, since as a VI user those really don't do anything but take up space, and the rather odd way that there is a bunch of empty, none working buttons kicking around on every page, often labelled with their last used action, such as equip or the name of powers, but which don't do anything, although I'm guessing these are place holders for the in game hotkeys, and so probably an integral part of the interface that can't be moved. The only other thing that rather confuses me is the way that the descriptions of your characters powers, or indeed anyone else's powers, are repeated a hole bunch of times if you look at their stats, indeed at first I thought I was just getting the guard stance description read over and over and over again and there was a mouseover problem. I'm guessing these are to do with the same power being described in empty power slots, when I don't have other powers to fill them, but it's a shame the description can't change to "slot so and so empty", for the slots your not using.

Re: sci-fi muds, wayfar1444.

To cw and anyone else considering trying the game, I've personally had no issues, neither have I seen anything from Hawkpadre or anyone else that suggests there would be issues.Admittedly, I was offline when the hole Ishtaar shindig went down, which either makes me oblivious, or objective. from where I stand now, Wayfar1444 is just a really good space game which is obviously someone's passion project, and that's no bad thing. One rule I've found for online games generally, is avoid what my brother refers to as "bolitics", this being a portmanto of "politics", and "bollocks!" And for a clearer definition, *points to both giant Ishtaar mess in that other topic, and to posts in this topic which have been stirred up by self same mess. GCW is %100 correct that all online games have politics, it is equally true that most online games will run into bolitics from time to time (I gather that Alteraeon and Cosmic rage have both had their shares), but only in a very few cases has said bolitics made a game literally unplayable. this is indeed why I myself stopped posting in said other thread. So my personal advice would be to just ignore the sound and fury, do your thing, and enjoy games, and there's a lot in Wayfar1444 to enjoy. Indeed, the only part of the recent negative spin this topic has taken that does concern me is the idea of Wayfar1444 going down again with no other admins or recourse to keep it running, but we'll just have to see on that one, since for the time being the game is being actively maintained and developed, and here's hoping it stays that way.

Okay, CoC2 has a db page, Find it here. If there's any major info which people who have played more of CoC2 think should be included on the page to make new player's lives easier, let me know. Now I need to decide whether to continue my game of CoC2 (I've just recruited Brent), or make another assault on Lethice with the original CoC mod.

Re: Any idea why Trials In Tainted Space became unplayable?

@Luel, Yeah, the old version of Trials in tainted space did work like a webpage, albeit one with some unlabeled buttons, now though it's more problematic. Sometimes nvda b will read all the text, sometimes the screen review works, sometimes you can tab between buttons, but it seemed less than consistent, which is why I'm not sure about accessibility testing on the Adobi air version, because in it's current state things like clicking on on screen hotspots would be nearly impossible, but wouldn't have been previously. With Coc 1, everything I can gather suggests that the adev mod is pretty dam complete, or at least having a quick look at the game and reading the release notes mentioned in the above thread suggests as much. I was able to explore,  find several places, see several unique encounters, engage in combat, get cuddly with Amaly, , undergo transformations, even the names for pregenerated characters mentioned on the Coc wiki seemed to work. The one stupid thing I did was forget to save .The only miner issue content wise is apparently with the character Giacomo, who couldn't be included in the mod for some licensing reason, though apparently some scenes which cover his part in the story have been added, and so hopefully the items he sold like scholar's tea will be available elsewhere, though I've also dug out my old login info for the fenoxo forums and asked about this on the thread for that mod, so we'll see.

Re: Any idea why Trials In Tainted Space became unplayable?

Okay, just to be fair, I had a look at the trials in tainted space version. The problem however, is that at the moment, because of running with Adobi air, even basic text reading and finding the buttons is pretty problematic, indeed the game is far less accessible now, than it was back in 2018 when I was first making enquiries, heck I got stuck in the option screen . This unfortunately means that until a _javascript_ port with at least the same access that the old version used to have turns up, knowing what in the game is problematic access that could be fixed, EG unlabelled buttons, vs what in the game is just adobe air playing silly beggars isn't easy to determine. On the plus side as I said, given the great work that's going in to making CoC2 accessible, it's entirely possible that for the new _javascript_ port, accessibility can be built from the ground up, EG correct button labels and a skip button as Caio describes, assuming of course that Fenoxo is willing to play ball on this one. In the mean time, I've downloaded CoC 2 and will see about playing it through enough to create a db page.

To be honest, Wayfar1444 struck me as no different to most game environments, IE, act like a reasonable human being, and most people, admins very definitely included, would be reasonable right back.my only my concern with Wayfar1444 is more mechanical, since I'd personally be less fond of anyone just randomly destroying my buildings etc when I'm off line just because they felt like it. indeed, I do notice that my holdings on y1444 are gone. I don't mind at all, since I started a new colony on  17-Egret and actually wanted to get rid of the y1444 stuff anyhow, but I'd be a little peeved if I came back to the game at some point and found my 17-Egret colony had gone the same way while I was offline. Oh I get that some people are in to pvp, which is fair enough, but it might be nice if there were some sort of options, or maybe areas where pvp was or was not okay in the game, so players had a choice of stiles, since (very unlike empiremud), the game seems to have more than enough territory to go around.I'd also on a mechanical level really like some more things for my colonists to do, and some more ways of managing my colony as a real settlement, though I admit that seeing them load up my heavy turret and blaze away while I was hunting random wildlife was rather amusing .

Re: Any idea why Trials In Tainted Space became unplayable?

@Defender I looked at the old topics concerning Trials in tainted space accessibility from a few years ago. Unfortunately, Fenoxo literally refused to discuss the matter since he stated it would take rewriting the UI. I sent him a private message at that time explaining that adding a few button labels was hardly a rewrite, and he never replied. Given that I'm seeing a large amount of access related discussions as regards the CoC mod and CoC 2, (the CoC mod topic even links to someone bringing up the matter of Trials in tainted space accessibility on the Fenoxo forum), I'm not sure how much in this case the issue is about developer awareness of the problem, and how much about developer unwillingness to actually do anything.Generally speaking in the past when I've had this sort of negative reception from developers, it's a sign to move on to something else, especially with the great work that people are putting in to the CoC mod and CoC 2 at the moment. CoC 2 is my top priority as regards text games now, since it needs a db entry, I'll also admit I'm also tempted to replay CoC 1 and see if I can finally defeat Lethice, since previously I got past the second dungeon, acquired several lovers and was level 15, but didn't quite get to taking on the demon queen herself.Again, if there are any indications that Fenoxo's attitude has changed, that would be awesome, so let us know, and if I get around to giving Trials in Tainted space a look over I'll put my ore in on the forum.

True, if you hear anything as regards Trials in tainted space, let me know, when I tried, the constant need to count unlabeled buttons, which didn't always seem to be in the same place made the game less than friendly to play. I'm actually really interested in where Adev's CoC1 mod will go, since the developer mentioned something about adding more content to the game.Back in 19 when I was playing CoC, there was a fascinating looking expansion which included things like weapon crafting, which would be cool, since in a lot of ways in CoC, it's the world and all the wonderfully weerd things you can do that interested me more than the erotica, although I didn't really like the way that levelling started to take quite large amounts of xp once you passed level 15 or so.

As regards trials in tainted space, yeah, I was told accessibility wouldn't be happening, but if it's already in Coc 2 then there might be reason for asking again. on the plus side, I had a look at the mod which luel mentioned in post 24. It looks really awesome, actually slightly easier to use than the original with it's screen reader reader mode, nothing clunky about perk choice etc. I don't know how incomplete it is, since when I was poking around, I could get up to finding amelie and the town ruins as well as Whitney's farm no problem. The only thing which did strike me as a little weird was that I unlocked other explorable places by just using the explore button over and over again, where as before I thought you needed to be a certain level to unlock the desert and the mountain. I'm going to update the database with info about the mod, and will have a look at Coc 2 as well, since if it's got a screen reader mode and skipable minigames that would be a great reason to add it.Edit: Okay have updated the CoC db page, plus from the looks of it, the mod is pretty complete, I was even able to try out some of the alternative character names listed in the CoC wiki which seemed to work.

I confess I was less a fan of empiremud, since finding a place where I could build my own empire without treading on anyone else's land  was nearly impossible, and when I tried asking about this the games' actual admin was not exactly pleasant, which i confess did rather put me off the game. I also didn't like the way in Empire you could do crafting with literally one quick command and little interaction, albeit I'd probably have got used to that given time, if I could've found a place to start from scratch.Maybe I'll give it another try at some point.

Re: Could someone please help me with smugglers 5 and invasion?

as I said, when I tried NVDA with smugglers, I found thatt firstly, while all the information was there, it was often formatted in a less useful way with yes no prompts on the same line, and extra links to other @Conor,parts of the game in the middle of explanatory text. Secondly, I found that once I opened an extra window like the chat screen, there was no way to get back to the main window without hitting close, thus making it impossible to for example, look at the trade prices on different planets. with supernova, I could open the trade window, then just hit control tab to get to the main screen, and as I looked around the nav screen at various planets, each would have the price of whatever commodity I'd selected in the trade screen listed, thus making it very easy to check how much eath thing was. A very similar system could be used on the galaxy map too. Again though, I'll freely admit I'm not as experienced with NVDA as I was with Supernova, so it's entirely possible I am missing something here, either in terms of commands, layout options or extra addons that would make life easier.

Actually, the story that Caccio told in post 58 does sound rather as if there is some sort of issue such as autism at play, since not being able to tell the difference in reaction between a person you know well and someone you have just met, to the point of causing major offense does sound like a more serious issue than just thoughtlessness, or at least possibly so, albeit from Caccio's previous behaviour on the forum, I would not have assumed this sort of trouble. In which case however, there isn't much more to be said either way.

It should be possible to right click each of the skills to  pull up the info page and see what the skill is, even if you have to right click some barely usable part of a word, heck that is necessary with supernova, although it's quite easy to do.What concerns me more is that a lot of screens such as the faction and profession screens, the ship info screen etc, which had both links to other parts of the game and a text field with information, now show up as much more jumbled because NVDA cannot determine what goes in which column, heck, with NVDA even pulling up the trade window and not accidently clicking on the wrong thing seemed to be pretty difficult. This is why I wonder if there is a way to get NVDA to Tabulate the screen a little better, since obviously NVDA does not behave this way with other tables on webpages or the like, the issue is more that NVDA is just not recognising the way the screen is formatted.

@Caccio,  while I probably would not have put it as harshly as Jayde did here, he is absolutely correct that intention does not matter, and that saying "sorry", is meaningless if there is no intention to change the behaviour behind the harm.If you are "sorry", then, say sorry, and don't do it again, end of story!

"competitive", is childish when it results in childish behaviour. For example, there is a huge difference between: "Your going down." and: "You complete waste of space! I'm' going to totally destroy you because you suckk!"Just as there is a difference between:"Yeah I won!" "and "I won! you lose! you big fat useless loser!" Re: an appeal

@Lord Lundin, Just look at the state of the world, you will see there is absolutely no limit to the density of humanity .@Caccio, ah, we seem to be getting somewhere. Most online games these days are none rp enforced. this means that yes, people are expected to act not just out of character, but as they would normally online, I.e., be  reasonable towards other players, and any behaviour which would be rude, offensive or irritating on a forum or the like, or indeed in rl, would be so in a game. Indeed, one concept which I have seen explicitly stated in Avalon the legend lives, but which applies to some degree most everywhere, is realplay, that you are essentially playing an online version of yourself, as a character in that world, so should act as you would act normally, just in the situation of being a space pilot, or fantasy mercenary or whatever your in game character is.This is very true for Wayfar1444, where people just basically chat and shoot the breeze and are as likely to talk about rl matters as in game ones.Even in RP enforced games, with a very few exceptions, your character still has to behave as part of a community, EG, if your in an alliance and you start pissing off members of another alliance, you'll annoy people because you'll be getting your own alliance into conflict. There are a very very few exceptions as where players are expected to play in a more aggressive manner, but usually those exceptions make this very clear in their in game materials, indeed one game, Torn city, I actively stopped playing precisely because! it had that sort of nasty ethos. So yeah, just be nice to people! Really it isn't that hard, and might even enhance your fun rather than spoiling it, (especially the next time you want a high level item built for you).

Re: an appeal

Ah, finally! a good question.here is a basic rule of thumb.Every online game is a public space full of people you do not know. if you would not say or do it in a classroom, work environment, or semi formal social event with a bunch of strangers, do not say it in an online game. You would not wander around your workplace saying: "hay! I just had a cup of coffee! wow, I just sat in my chair! wow, I just opened a door." that would annoy  people pretty quickly.Neither would you say: "I just looked at this morning's email! Hay I'm going to totally rule this place!", or "I just finished my first assignment! take that you stupid noob! because I've been doing jobs longer than you!" Yes, you might say, after a long day: "That was a hard job, I'm glad I nailed that one." or, if playing a friendly game with someone: "Yeah, got you that time lol." Above all, remember that everyone else on the game is a person playing at their own machine, with their own life or concerns. Yeah, a friendly hi or a bit of friendly competition is fine, but "friendly", is the word here. If in doubt, just remember what Jesus said: "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", since oddly enough, it's actually very good advice for a lot of situations, online games not the least .

Caccio wrote:1st of all, I will repeat what I keep saying everywhere: my intention is not to annoy other community members, but to entertain, have fun in my competitive way.The actual problem is caused by that "competitive way", which can often annoy some people,. I'm afraid, this is a pretty clear indication to me of exactly why you have got banned in so many games. You call this "your competitive way", and state it "can annoy some people", yet, as witnessed by so many different occasions, it is not just annoying, but annoying to the point it's got you banned from games. Caccio wrote:Also, I like to taunt, or even provoke my concurrency, to enhance the competition, and make the game more challenging, more exciting to me.All; of these statements are to do with you! You state this is "your way" and that it "makes things more exciting to you", but when your behaviour's affect on other people is mentioned, you do not seem to acknowledge this, you just state "it is my way", as though simply being "yours" is some sort of excuse for behaviour which obviously other people do not find acceptable.I'll give you a real world example. A few years ago, I joined in a public choir singing duel of the fates from phantom menace. It was a public event, people could just turn up and sing. There was one rehearsal, then a concert with the hally orchestra.I decided, (me being a bit of a nut), to do the hole thing dressed in Jedi robes, carrying a light sabre. Was it a fancy dresss event? no. Was anyone else dressed as a Jedi? Also no. Did I care, Hell no! there are even photos of me on the orchestra's website . So there was me, engaged in what (by the comments I got), people viewed as eccentric behaviour, that was very much my idea. However, when I found the light sabre immitted a loud and noticeable hum, I actively bought a less good model which didn't hum. Why? After all, light sabres obviously do hum, it was part of the costume, and I definitely would have made a more authentic Jedi with a humming sabre. Simply that I was at a concert, with an orchestra, and with a hole bunch of people around me singing in parts. A light sabre humming away would have been a distraction, and an annoyance, and likely made everyone's life more difficult. So, I modified what I did. I didn't change my behaviour entirely, but I simply engaged in it in a way which would not spoil the experience for other people. And that really is basically the point. Online games are! a public experience, everyone has a slightly different personality and set of objectives, but if you cannot at least modify what you do relative to making everyone else's lives slightly better, then you probably should not be playing online games.

Re: Could someone please help me with smugglers 5 and invasion?

I had a quick poke around s5 invasion with NVDA last night, and I can say that Supernova just handled the interface soo much better it isn't funny. All the information is there with NVDA, but where Supernova columnized the information, so that say yes no prompts appeared on separate lines, NVDA seems to have everything layed out straight off. Also, where in Supernova you could just navigate with the arrows and perform mouse clicks, then hit ctrl tab to switch from the trade screen and other active windows to the main window, I couldn't get NVDA to switch windows correctly, even when I used the object container nav keys, EG NVDA numbpad 8 and 2. It would be useful I think if there was a way to get NVDA to recognise that the smugglers screen is layed out in columns, and maybe to switch windows more easily.I don't know if other NVDA addons could help with this, indeed I'll say in general while NVDA is far more compatible with modern aps, this is one of the few instances where I'm finding it's coming up short, though whether that is NVDA itself, or just my lack of knolege of some of it's more esoteric functions, I don't know.

Re: an appeal

I'm afraid for me assuming that there is a nebulous "they" out there, tarnishing your reputation before you start seems both a little paranoid, and a way of trying to negate your own responsibility.Yes, you might have run into a conflict on one game, but really as someone who has played a stupidly huge amount of online games, most of the time if you simply behave in the same way you would in any public space with strangers, and treat people in the way you'd like them to treat you, things go okay. once or twice, yep, you could fall fowl of a personality conflict, or a rule you've never run into, or an unpleasant environment, but given the amount of times this has happened to you, there clearly seems to be something wrong, and to me, the correct course of action would not be to try and assume that someone else is responsible, or that your the victim of some mysterious vendetta, but just to consider how and where you might have messed up and to not do it again the next time you play an online game.

@Caccio, I wouldn't like to pass judgement on this situation, but I'm afraid this seems to be exactly the same position you've been in previously, with game after game after game. I don't doubt you had good intentions, but again, speaking as someone who regularly reports bugs and issues and has engaged in beta testing, admins don't usually ban people out of hand for such things. How often did you report this bug? Did you ask more than once in a day for it to be fixed? Did you submit one bug report and then leave it to the admin to fix in their own time? Were you overly effusive in your negativity? Again, I don't know, I wasn't there, but I can say that when I've been on Wayfar1444 myself, Hawkpader, the game's chief admin strikes me as a perfectly reasonable fellow and not someone to hand out arbitrary bans. Still, I am only making suggestions here, what you do is up to you.

@dentin, same here, I love the idea of a text game with crew management and planet exploration and was always hoping more got done with Stellareon. @Caccio, I'm afraid at this point in time, given the frequency of bans you've received from games, I wonder if perhaps you need to consider whether the issue here is not perhaps what is wrong with other people, but what you yourself are doing. Personality clashes sometimes happen, some games have admins who are less pleasant, however as someone who has played a stupidly huge number of muds and online games for the last 15 or so years, can count the number of warnings I've received on one hand, has never once been banned from a game, despite not being a stranger to mental illness.I can say that most of the time, people are reasonable if you are reasonable to them, and on the occasions they are not, either simply shutting up and working around matters, finding someone more reasonable to talk to, or (in worst  cases, ), just hauling stakes and moving all avoid unpleasantness.I don't know what happened, and I'm not in a position to judge this situation since I wasn't on the game at the time myself, however, I can say given the variety of people and situations you seem to have had this trouble with, I do wonder if perhaps you need to think about what the  reason for this trouble you keep having actually is.

Personality clashes sometimes happen, some games have admins who are less pleasant, however as someone who has played a stupidly huge number of muds and online games, can count the number of warnings I've received on one hand, has never once been banned from a game; oh and no, I am no stranger to mental illness either.I can say that most of the time, people are reasonable if you are reasonable to them, and on the occasions they are not, either simply shutting up and working around matters, finding someone more reasonable to talk to, or (in worst circumstances), just hauling stakes and moving all avoid unpleasantness.I don't know what happened, and I'm not in a position to judge this situation since I wasn't on the game at the time myself, however, I can say given the variety of people and situations you seem to have had this trouble with, I do wonder if perhaps you need to consider where the source of the trouble actually is.

Re: talking about old games

Nice thoughts there kavya. Superliam is sort of a perennial favourite for me, and one I go back to to run through again occasionally, just for fun. From a modern perspective, I do sort of wish the information about the enemies and obstacles in each level was contained within the game, much like crazy party and The gate so you could discover them as you go on, but in general I like how well things work. also, it always amazes me with many older games just how well thought out a lot of the mechanics are, and even when they have comparatively few design elements, how well they're employed. superliam isn't random the way that Crazy party levels or other audio side scrollers are, but often traps and enemies are just well placed, particularly those ambush moments when enemies come from both sides and it's necessary to charge forward, Moe down what's in front of you, and then turn around quick.

Okay as people will gather, I've been sorting out the BG games in the db, both improving the quality of their descriptions, fixing the download links, since Ian Humphries  seems to have moved the hosting from dropbox to google drive,  and removing those mailto links as well. I also played BG Hearts again, and this time completely slaughtered the computer, Ha!

Nope, Ian Humphries has never been on this forum, I have exchanged emails with him in the past, but as far as I know Germanco is a new user. Windows 10 seems a bit more of a pain to change sapi voice than xp, since whenever I tried, it always defaulted back to the original, then again, I don't mind the standard microsoft hazel voice anyway, actually I personally have never been crazy about espeak, but it's all personal preference. I take back what I said about the Ai in BG hearts being easy, I tried a game last night and got completely clobbered . I've not played for a while now and need to get back into the swing of things I think.

@Luel, C cleaner did indeed eat one of my early saves, after which I made the cookie an exception, so it was fine. It was first NVDA deciding it wouldn't read the text at all, even with internet explorer, and then, even when I switched to Supernova, internet explorer deciding not to display the text anymore .So, here's to hoping this new mod works out, heck, if it's got a decent browser interface, the potential is there for it to be even easier to play than the original, especially if they add some of the fun extra stuff that got added in expanded versions like weapon crafting.

@Nidzaa, I believe the topic in new releases is one from about 2013 which was resurrected and brought to the top of the new releases room for no good reason, and the reply by Ian Humphries was quoted from a mail he sent to someone else. That is however why I thought it would be better to have a topic here for legitimate discussion of the BG titles. wow, you mentioning playing them with no internet takes me back to 2007-12, when I had regular two hour train journeys with no net connection, no mobile phone  and just my laptop, and yes often was playing Ian Humphries games at that point.

Appreciating spoonbill's BG games series

2021-03-05 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : Dark via Audiogames-reflector

Appreciating spoonbill's BG games series

According to a reply I saw in new releases, apparently Ian Humphries of Spoonbill games is permanently stepping back from the game development business. Given that he's produced a grand total of 45 games over the past 20 years, all of them free, and all of them still possible to download and run on Windows 10, well it's fair enough if the guy needs a break! So this topic is just to highlight the BG games for those who might not have played them, discuss what people's favourite BG titles are and why, and some of the strengths of the series. First, yes, the majority of the BG titles fall into the traditional card/word/puzzle genre of games, so if people aren't interested in that style of thing, then obviously these won't appeal. also, given that the games began development before screen readers like NVda, the main output method is microsoft Sapi, though I will say that is far less of a trial than it was back in the Xp days when these games were first released, thanks to the quality of the Windows 10 voices, oh and wow! I'm sounding like a real grumpy old git now aren't I?anyway, enough of the bad stuff, since I can some up the good aspects of the series in one word. Design! When the games use grids, there are several overview methods available, when the games involve playing against a computer, there are a range of difficulty levels. The games don't have much by way of sound effects, but what there is, is always employed well. Want to play without time limits? Oh there's an option for that? Want different grid sizes for grid based games?Oh, there's an option for that too. Want to play crosswords or follow along with chess game files you get off the internet? Guess what, that's here too! All packaged with extensive instructions which explain the rules of the game, and even give you strategy tips. Then there is the diversity aspect, since I don't think even Jim Kitchen had quite as extensive a collection of games, indeed several I'd only heard of for the first time by playing them here, such as boxes, Alchemy and tablic solitare, which I then looked up and found have quite the history in their own right. Now, on to my top 5. Bare in mind, these are based not only on my opinions of the games generally, but also my game preferences.Since I find the majority of grid based games more difficult to comprehend on a computer without a physical board in front of me, games like BG Chess challenge, BG Boggle, or BG Sudoku, not to mention several Solitaire varients won't be on this list, but that doesn't mean I think any the less of them as games. 5: BG crossword: This in fairness is on my lady's behalf rather than mine, since she's spent literally hours on this one. It says something though when most talking crosswords are both ridiculously over priced, and not able to play online crossword puzzles successfully, then Ian Humphries just bangs this one up, complete with so many ways to review the grid, put in different letters and all in all, trounce the competition, despite the lack of a whacking great price tag.4: BG cribbage: Always a game I have a soft spot for, since my grandma taught me to play at a very young age. Cribbage is a complex game, also a rare instance of a card game for two players which works exceptionally well. The BG version has a computer opponent which is surprisingly clever, as well as a number of ways of reviewing the rather complex rules of the game in it's different phases. 3: BG tablic solitaire: Extra points for being both a game that is entirely new to me, and a solitar game with a very unique formula. I particularly like how in this one you need to react to what you get and play accordingly. 2: BG Hearts: Anyone who remembers my old casting of the pod from way back when, will remember me plying through this game. I love trick taking card games, and Hearts is one of the most wonderfully brutal. I will say the BG Hearts Ai I did manage to bamboozle after enough time playing, but that was good practice for when I started playing human beings. Oh, and if you've not heard the BG hearts review Download it here from sendspace. I also love BG nomination whist, but in fairness of not putting two radically similar games on this list, I decided to restrict myself to just the one trick taking card game.1: BG Alchemy: Okay this is probably the most complex of Ian Humphries games, also a rare instance of a grid based game I found surprisingly easy to follow. Play a combination of five in a row and uno, with point scoring along the way, and a fun atmosphere and ethos. I since found out this is a classic from early windows days, and it's not hard to see why. A complex game, but one which puzzle fans should definitely have a look at.All that being said, there are others I've played a fair amount, and still more I've dabbled with off and on, from BG Uno with it's surprisingly prescient computer opponents, to the casual BG word maze, or the brutal BG Mine sweeper.

At risk of horrible Double entendre's , I had a quick play with Trials in Tainted space back in the day, but settled on it looking like more frustration than it was worth, what with the need to end up pushing at so many random bits of the interface. If the newer version could be built in a slightly more accessible way that would be nice, I do remember access discussion of the original trials in tainted space didn't go well and was literally refused, though on the other hand as you said, CoC 2 has a helpful screen reader mode. Actually if so, CoC 2 probably does need a db page.

Dreamy train and u mart come immediately to mind. however, also it depends upon how wide you cast the simulation net. For example Gma tank commander, zero site 3d velocity, the S.E. T.A, watercraft simulator game,  and lone wolf might or might not count as simulation games depending on whether you see operating various military vehicles as a simulated activity.Ditto with at least some of the city building or incremental games, EG city inc, and the thus far not in db prosperity game on Steam which is one I need to try myself.Actually "simulation", is always a bit of a sticky genre term, in the Db it's sort of used as a catch all for games that let you drive something other than a racing car, so at the moment u mart and parkboss don't count as simulation (although I'd definitely be up for a city building or management genre category when we get more games of this type.

Re: The Arcane Duels - Revised Playable Demo

I like the idea while you're getting used to the game, but I'd not suggest having it all the time. How about, instead of just having it as a setting to turn it on and off, maybe tie it to some sort of magic item or ability that works against some opponents and not others. For example, maybe have a clairvoyance, or even clairaudience skill that starts off at one, and is used against most lower level opponents, but as you get to stronger opponents, you need to invest more into clairaudience to have the skill be effective.

Re: Looking for a list of re-playable games for PC

@Saiyan, ah, sorry, nope, A few minutes of glory is definitely text based. If your looking for games with sounds though, as well as Dreamy train, you could also look into King of dragon pass and six ages on Ios. sounds, lots of great music, and some of the deepest gameplay I've seen, plus a hole bunch of different starting conditions, game modes and awards. Then on the other end of the scale, just as Beatstar is a great example of an arcade game with sound effects, how about Feer, which has auto generating missions and tasks to do, meaning that even if it is an arcade game, it's one that you can go back to time and again and still have slightly different experiences, aside from the two game world themes available. Oh, and the same devs are also bringing out a new game soon too. Another one that occurs to me in quite a different sense is new horrizons, since while there aren't unlockables as such, the game has a hole bunch of different ships, as well as a totally unique mission system and an entirely open world where you choose what you do, as well as some achievements, like buying your own moon or reaching elite title at 1025 kills, which will take you a while to learn. hth. That are probably others kicking around too, and likely more to be released soon, heck the youtube video I just watched on blind drive said the game will be having unlockabls, which sounds cool.

Re: Looking for a list of re-playable games for PC

Never heard of cape. To be honest though, the amount of games with unlockables and replay value these days is actually pretty large, even if you exclude things like muds and multiplayer games with repeatable missions etc. Gamebooks like the Choice of games and hosted games titles where you can make different choices, not to mention games like a few minuts of glory with randomly set starting conditions, heck, even in a game as simple as beatstar, there is a tonne of soundpacks to unlock, minigames to buy and now even missions. Really, these days unlockables are just pa for the course, even in generic arcade games like Feer, which of course is a good thing. one game I've recently gone back to several times myself is Dreamy train, just because of the amount of fun stuff, different missions, different trains to unlock, different things to buy, heck even different events at different times of the year to play, so if you've not checked it out, that is one i'd recommend, though really these days unlockables and progressive achievements should just be part of any good game design.

Actually, there is a sort of sequel for adventure at C, at least as far as seeing how the story goes and changing things up:, remnant  by three black noises, I know because my lady did a lot of the voice acting for the game.Don't ask me about gameplay though, since like Bryan I've never had much luck with AAC myself.

Interesting thoughts here, and some (like the somethinelse games), which didn't occur to me, but are a great idea nonetheless.@Ghost, as regards Entombed Ii, in 2015 Jason alan was on the list saying he'd experience something of a change in circumstances and wouldn't be working on the game as was, it was a shame since while the alpha he produced wasn't exactly playable, it had some really good ideas and would've been built with modable content Interestingly enough, a few here are games I still need to play myself, particularly a hero's call and the earlier bk games.

Re: Grid base games

Off the top of my head, only the adventure to fate games feature actual mazes to navigate. The ensign and a dark room come close, with 2d overworld maps which you must navigate step by step, but of course those maps are fully open. I don't know if untold has maze elements later, though when I last looked at it's map it was more like going from one linked  place to another, and other rpgs like path of adventure or homequest just don't work like that.

Re: What sequels of audiogames (old and new) would you like to see?

@cyco, I knew there was another glorantha game on the horrizon, actually that is a series I need to get back to myself.@Liam, I think the fact that so many people (myself included), have expressed interest in a superliam 2 shows how much the game has been appreciated over the  last fifteen years, and indeed is still being appreciated, heck I'll be installing it on my lady's machine this week since she's starting to really enjoy side scrollers. So, while the april fools joke was funny, and whether sl2 happens or not, the first game is still awesome, and I'd prefer it not to be entirely written out of cannon, or at least if it does go with the "it's all a dream" type of ending, there to be some sort of relevance to the main character dreaming that they're a superhero called superliam.that for me I'm afraid was the major issue with the gamebook from a story telling perspective, had x1, or robot dogs or some elements of the dream been relevant to the player's every day life, even if not as being directly real then it might have felt somewhat worth it.Terraformers was great, if short, though as that also I believe has windows ten issues a remake might be needed more than a sequel there, although there are definitely ways to continue the story. In terms of Shades of doom, remember, that Shades of doom differs from the doom series in that where doom had demons and the player exploring an abandoned space base which had opened a portal to an unknown dimension, that was obviously hell even if back in the nineties the developers worried about getting hell for saying hell in game instructions. In shades of doom, it's more an experiment gone wrong, so I'd personally prefer a sequel to follow the effects expanding outside the underground lab resident evil style.

@Meatbag This topic, was posted in January of 2019, which makes New horizons just over two years old. @Jason blaze, oddly enough I never finished the original time adventures. With that type of game it's always hard to judge the difficulty. Chillingham was imho way too easy, while time adventures was rather too hard without just following the cluebook.

Re: What sequels of audiogames (old and new) would you like to see?

@julian interesting topic. @Jayjay, in post ten of the remakes topic I discussed the differences between sequels and remakes, since to me, a game that is still possible to run on the current system and still complete in and of itself doesn't necessarily need a remake, but a sequel to follow the story or maybe show the game with a slightly different mechanic. For example, I'd love to see a sequel to Superliam as Julian said, picking up where the previous game left off, showing what that crystal thing is, giving Liam some new worlds to explore and maybe a different enemy to battle now that x1 is defeated. However, I would be less keen on the idea of a superliam remake, IE, a game that started at Sandy serf and followed Liam's journey to defeat x1 with the same audio and same mechanics, even if it were written in a more up-to-date programming language. Entombed on the other hand, I'd like to see get a remake, covering the same dungeon diving but with ironed out inequities, as I said in the other thread. However, back to sequels, I'd love to see a sequel to shades of doom, perhaps going resident evil with the experimental weapon from the lab getting out into the world, and you needing to battle mutants and cyborgs in over run towns or country side, rather than just in lab corridors. Paladin of the sky as well, though of course from Paladin point in Manamon we know that Manamon is sort of the sequel to paladin of the sky . Still, it'd be nice to see the dragon hatchlings on their new planet, as well as maybe get some updated mechanics and story.New horizons. Yes, I know a game that is only two years old probably doesn't qualify as classic, but honestly this is one of the most unique audiogames I've seen for a long time and an absolute personal favourite. I'd love to see a sequel which expanded upon the world, maybe with different factions in the galaxy to join, planets to explore, or perhaps the return of the thargoids for a major offensive and the need to battle them with more weapons and ship types available.

Re: audiogames that deserve remake?

@Julian, it was actually Sightless horseman who started the topic . Night of parasite is one I hadn't thought off myself, though I confess the moving enemy system, and the need to literally count every step in that got annoying fast for me. Personally, Chillingham and grizly gulch wouldn't be high on my list of remakes, they've got some cute and funny audio and a nice, relaxed atmosphere, but the gameplay is so primitively boppity, that the games would need to be made basically unrecognisable to really cut it today, even the story in chillingham is cursory at best (look at the stupidly large amount of bug hunting). Better to just hope for more good quality western or horror games in the future, heck A western drama, even with it's issues blue grizzly gulch out of the water.I'd love to see better translations of some Japanese titles like shadow rine and the older bk games, and would be more than glad to pay as was the case with bk3, though whether that counts as a remake I'm not sure.

Re: audiogames that deserve remake?

Interesting topic. One question I wonder though, is where is the line between sequel, remake, and expanded contend? Games like Superliam and lone wolf are still no problem to run on modern windows. That they could do with some expansion or a sequel I certainly agree, Albeit lone wolf is a game I've never done too well with myself, however it seems a bit strange to start talking of direct remakes, IE, the same game redone with a different programming languages and perhaps some different decisions made, such as happened between the old and new versions of Egg hunt, beatstar  or great toy robbery, when the originals are still here. So, while I'd certainly be up for a superliam 2 or a lone wolf expanded operations, whether you'd need a complete tear down and remake I honestly don't know. here however are a few of my suggestions for remakes; 1: Entombed! This actually started to happen with Entombed ii taking into account a lot of the things people wanted expanded in the first game, front/back ranks for more tactical combat, the ability for magic to miss, a slightly less ridiculous system for material hardness, and in built customisation options, a shame development stopped. Entombed just had so many cool little systems, from auto created weapons and monster heroes to the body part damage system, to the creation of corpses and skeletons, it'd be great to see these worked into a different game which ironed out the bugs and class imbalances, as well as added a bit more variety. Really, even now with Manamon and A hero's call and so on, there've been no audio games quite like entombed for pure tactical dungeon diving fun and having to work with what adventurers you find to form the best party.2: Galaxy ranger. When I think back on all of Vipgameszone's titles, galaxy ranger is the one which stands out to me the most, even compared to lords of the galaxy with it's richer soundscapes, cute minigames and entirely %100 imbalanced gameplay .Of course, real time strategy games have advanced a long way, but Galaxy ranger had so many fun little systems, like the need to play stereo targeting with your robotic units, and physically take control in battle, and the really fun way you had to balance unit's strengths and weaknesses (especially when you had only a limited maximum number of each unit available). A remade, and indeed expanded version, with perhaps more emphasis on production rather than taking all of your robotic workers off the map, not to mention a better online system would be awesome, using the best of what has been learned about designing strategy games in the intervening years to make something special, since wow I have so many fond memories of sitting their in my space cruser, having already blasted away the enemy's defences, counting down the squares until I could hit delete and drop the bomb .3: Pipe 2, blast chamber. While it is possible to run the BSC titles on modern windows, it's far more problematic to do, and this one I've never got to run at all. thinking about the BSC games now, I think for me, pipe 2 is the most inervative. Hunter had fantastic soundscapes and was almost a proto crazy party in terms of different minigames, but each game individually was comparatively simple, while troopanum 2, though undoubtedly one of the most polished examples of a space invaders game we've seen, is still at rock bottom a space invaders game.Pipe 2 however took the simple, and indeed rather dull idea of the original pipe, and just added factor after factor after factor, so that rather than just playing one arcade game, or indeed several arcade games, you were effectively playing three or four minigames at once. Hammering the pipes, dodging electricity, stereo targeting the rats, playing lock pick with the chests, even sticking in the occasional superliam style side scroller, playing memory with the spiders, not to mention the swapping numbers bomb defusing and the fact all of this was on a timer. Pipe 2 is one of the best examples I've seen of how to increase the difficulty of an audio game without either overloading the soundscape, or simply having a faster reacting boppit, which made it in turn a more rewarding game to play. Even though I did like the actual environments far more in hunter, if we're talking a total remake and I had to pick one bsc title, I think it'd be pipe 2. 4: Freefall. Okay, picking a doss text adventure is probably cheating a wee bit here, but honestly Freefall is one of the most unique things I've played. Frustrating as hell, with a clunky parser, staggering travel distances and brutal resource management, and yet rarely have I played a game, even counting muds like clok, where I really feel like I'm preparing for an epic fantasy journey in the wild quite like this, with the need to manage food and water, and even reaching the next town over an achievement. I also absolutely loved the way that Fallthru introduced it's world, with the need to

Re: Crazy party stupid question!

@Jayjay, I actually like the board mode, I just wish it was expanded. The actual mario party games have so many different types of squares on their boards, EG squares that make king Bouser come and stomp around the board, randomly making people lose out, squares that swap players scores around. They're all pretty random, but that's the fun, I'd love to see more of that sort of thing with the crazy party boards. With the battle mode, I unlocked all the gyms originally back when decks had to be of one type only, then the  type thing changed and my decks were no longer useful. A few versions ago I started experimenting with multi type decks and got things to work out a bit better, even played online a few times, but with the recent changes, not to mention  battle quest which takes totally different tactics, where battle mode is now I'm not sure, I probably just need to scrap my decks and start again, although deck building has never been my strong suit when there are so many cards to choose from.
