2016-10-12 Thread helen kerner

Dave,
The Council number for Gilroy is 89.
It was organized on January 27, 1934 by Supreme President, Maria C. Peters.
There were 14 Charter Members.  You have the 14 listed below in your email as
the names on the sides.  Don't know anything about the last five names.
Information obtained from the book Centennial Album and History of the
U.P.P.E.C. 1901-2001.

The PFSA (Formerly the UPEC) has the original UPEC records in their office
(separate from the JA Freitas Library in the same building) in San Leandro. I
have been many times and they have let me look through the records and take
pictures of the pages I was interested in. I also talked to them a while back
and they said they have the IDES records in their storage facility somewhere,
however they were unable and inside when they could access or get
them..although I did volunteer to help find and organize them for them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Widowed woman "mendicante" buried where?

2016-10-12 Thread linda
Hi Maria Elena,

Mendicant denotes begging, but, no, I don't think we can assume
homelessness. Nineteenth century travel writers to the Azores describe the
material poverty and the custom of begging, but I don't recall reading any
accounts of homeless elderly women.

Ok, here's a quick summary of a description from one of the books I have:
Saturday was the customary day they made their rounds; the beggars the
author observed (on Sao Miguel) were all elderly impoverished women. He
says that "Mendicity [sic] is confined to the aged and infirm poor and to
the crippled and blind, for whom there is no legal provision. They are
therefore dependent on the charity of the wealthy, to whom they make a
weekly application and receive alms." "Their strength is to sit still; and
they will wait on a staircase or at a gate for more than an hour, in dismal
expectation of the smallest pittance." During the period when your Barbara
Velha lived, the monasteries and convents distributed surplus food to the
beggars as well as alms; later the religious houses were dissolved, and the
author (writing about 20 years afterwards, if I recall correctly) suggests
that added a bit more hardship to their lives.

I recall reading an obito for a man in Cedros, Flores where the priest
wrote that the man's occupation was "a beggar and nothing more". His tone
struck me as exasperated, and now I wish I'd noted where exactly I saw it
because now I'd like to look at it again.

hope that's useful for you,

Linda

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: California Portuguese Fraternal organizations

2016-10-12 Thread 'celeste perry' via Azores Genealogy

Jeremy,
As an example of what I can and cannot do: You mention Morro Bay. In the
database I have several deaths in Morro Bay and the Council of the UPPEC to
which the person belonged varies from 13, 18, 32, 39, 58, 110. Where the
person died does not give me the "real" information about the council to which
they belonged.

Again, my experience with the ladies my mother met monthly gives me an answer
as to why some formed a "new" council in the same town or nearby. They
disagreed about something, got a group of friends to join them and moved their
group to a different town. They still lived in the same place, just did not
participate in the same council.

So, even though I recorded the council to which they belonged it may not be the
place where they lived. This is one reason I need as much information as you
have to find your family.

information about the member.  The more information,

Here are the thing I copied from the information I found in

death claim #, policy #, last name, first name, mid. name,
month of death, day of death, year of death, age, where

Portugal or Azores), Father's name, mother's name, council #

there was a death certificate), mortuary, contact person and

[AZORES-Genealogy] When trying send an email from a third party site

2016-10-12 Thread Cheri Mello
I get this question a lot in regards to FTDNA. It could happen with any
site though. You click the link to email the person, and instead of
launching your email, Windows wants you to use THEIR email client.

With Chrome, they want you to use Gmail (since both are Google products).
Pretend you have AOL. Do a Google search on:
set aol email as default in chrome
Here's one: http://sstut.com/aolmail/chrome-default-email.php
Substitute your email client in place of AOL.

In Firefox, click the 3 bars in the upper right corner (red circle in the
screen shot), and pick the Options gear. Once that page loads, click
Applications in the left column (yellow circle). Then look for "Mail to" in
the main body. To the right, double click for your email client and a drop
down menu will appear (purple circle).

Since I'm on Windows 10, I don't have Internet Explorer (IE) anymore. It's
Edge. I'd do a Google search on: set email as default in internet
explorer. Or Edge. Whatever it may be.

[AZORES-Genealogy] California Portuguese Fraternal organizations

2016-10-12 Thread 'celeste perry' via Azores Genealogy

I will try to write what I remember about the organizations my family joined in
California.

The oldest organization I found was the UPEC. This was a men only organization
and I was told that it began because there were families where the husband died
and there was no money to bury him. There were "donations" by his friends to
bury the deceased. This made sense that a group of men began a "lodge" and
each member contributed a monthly fee that was used to bury when the member
died.

In addition to the UPEC there was the IDES (also began with only men). Again,
being raised in an immigrant family, I understood the competition that was part
of what I felt was the Portuguese. Friends from the same Azore Islands stood
together and had separate "festias" to celebrate their traditions.

The UPPEC, (women only) was the organization my mother and her family joined.
In Hayward, CA, the rivalry between the UPPEC and the SPRSI was something I saw
as a child. Even to the point that the best friend of one of my aunts rose to
be the "Supreme President" of the UPPEC while her mother was active in the
SPRSI. There was a lot of issues that caused some families to show their
hostility about some of their friends and relatives that did not participate
together in one or the other "lodge."

There was a time in the UPPEC (I don't know about other lodges) where "only"
women of Portuguese descent could join. That did eventually change.

So, getting back to lodge records. In Hayward, I had a "connection" to the
Supreme Council when it moved to an office in Hayward. My aunt, Esther Sobral,
was the Supreme Treasurer. And, my daughter's godmother worked in the office.
When I began to try to find ancestors places of birth, I looked at some of the
UPPEC death records and found that some, not all, listed more than Portugal or
Azores as their place of birth.

Because at that time, there were so many people I met that had no idea they
needed the village, not just the island, where their ancestor was born to
search the church records. Until 1900, the Catholic church ran the country.
There were no civil records. So, needing to know what village and church a
where person was baptized was the only way to begin to confirm their birth.

I was able to index all the death records for the UPPEC that had not been at
the house where the very first records were burned in a fire. Over a period of
4 years, I did so and when the UPPEC merged with (if I remember correctly) the
IDES, UPEC, and some others.

At that time, I was told that I would not be able to do any further indexing
because of "privacy" issues. So, I have in the database the deaths from 1909
to 2009.

I believe that the SPRSI records were taken by the Luso organization when they
merged with that organization. There were other smaller Portuguese Lodges, I
just can't remember all their names.

Hope this helps.

Repost for Sue Quinn, sleeq42 at gmail.com
For those who will try to help, I should mention that the record is the
second one on the left page and Antonio Pereira casado com Antonia Rosa is
written in the margin.
Corrected link:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/GRA-
SC-SANTACRUZ-O-1841-1860/GRA-SC-SANTACRUZ-O-1841-1860_item1/P159.html

On the twenty-eighth day of the month of April of the year of one thousand
eight hundred and fifty-eight, having received the Divine Sacraments of the
Sick, died Antonio Pereira, [written between lines is, I believe “resident
behind the peak” which is confirmed in Confessados] married to Antonia
Rosa, eighty-four years old, more or less, ….

The remainder I think says something about being accompanied by the
Reverendo Collegio but there was an impossibility of doing something and
only something else was done in the church.

Then, in the margin is written something about bad weather dealing with the
grave and the deceased.

don't see the original author of the question.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: ***UPEC ... early membership records now online***

2016-10-12 Thread 'Susan Murphy' via Azores Genealogy
If you are talking about the SPRSI, I don't know if any are stored in any
location such as the Freitas library, but I do know what happened to council
84, Sao Gabriel, which was organized in the Warm Springs area of what is now
Fremont. All my family was from this area and a little band of women held on to
the end until they were incorporated into another small chapter and eventually,
I believe they all went into a bigger organization (not home to check my info).
Anyway, in the case of council 84, I have the original records and did take
them to Salt Lake City to be microfilmed years ago.

Maybe that could be another project for us Kathy, LOL. The membership book is
too large for me to scan but we could get what they scanned on our next trip to
Salt Lake to add to your Dropbox collection.

If anyone is from Warm Springs, I would be glad to look but will not be home
until the end of the month.

2016-10-12 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Nooot exactly, Rosemarie. To clarify this, there has been no indexing done.
We just copied the records that have been microfilmed by the LDS Church. I
assume that the original records are at the J.A. Fritas Library in San Leandro.
If someone wants to check to see if their ancestor was in the early UPEC, they
can do so by going to the Azores GenWeb and clicking the appropriate link
there.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Widowed woman "mendicante" buried where?

2016-10-12 Thread Maria Lima
Linda, thank you for clarifying. Yeah, i saw those words, "that "she had
nothing". I looked to see if it said that in the other obits but it didn't.
And the priest used the word " VELHA" ( as in old? I wondered ) to punctuate
her status.

It saddens me that with grown children the mother would be homeless. Does
mendicante also mean homeless (?)
