[IxDA Discuss] IxDA Announces Call for Applications for Open Board Director Positions

2008-10-21 Thread IxDA Communications
How far we've come in five years! The Interaction Design Association
is a global community, growing at an amazing pace and reflecting the
increasing importance and impact of Interaction Designers on the world
around us. Are you ready to step forward and contribute your energy
and passion to help guide and shape our exciting future? Well here's
your chance!

The invitation is now open for those inspired, creative, and active
leaders in our community to apply for one of the three open positions
on our Board of Directors. As our community and organization grows,
so do our many challenges and needs. So, to meet that head on, we're
seeking highly motivated individuals with excellent organizational
skills, leadership vision, and who are resourceful and willing to roll
up their sleeves and work to advance IxDA's mission.

Applications will be open for the next two weeks, ending at Midnight
Monday, November 3, 2008 (11:59:59 PST).

IxDA Board Directors are responsible for providing leadership in key
roles important to ensuring the strength of our organization and
network. Board roles include executive, financial, local group
liaison, educational, communication, and conference responsibilities.
Board Directors must be willing to devote an average of four hours per
week, involving communication and coordination with fellow Directors
and the community toward our goals and associated initiatives.

New directors filling these open positions will serve a term from
January 2009 to February 2011, which includes a one-month long overlap
with retiring Directors.

We're confident that effective leaders will emerge from our vibrant
community! If you feel you've got what it takes to work with others
to help guide IxDA toward bigger and greater goals, we invite you to
apply by completing this application questionnaire:

http://www.ixda.org/board_application_2008.php

Here's a preview of some of the questions you'll find on the
application form:

Your Background and History:

• What's your professional background, current title and work, and
field?

• Are you, or have you previously been, affiliated with any other
design or UX organizations? If so, in what capacity?

• When and how did you first get involved with IxDA?

• Have you previously volunteered for IxDA? (If so, in what capacity
and with whom did you work?)

Your Position Statements

• Please let us know in detail why you want to be a Board member of
IxDA:

• How would you express the special value of IxDA, especially
compared to related groups?

• What is your vision for IxDA?

• As a Board member, how would you plan on making your vision a
reality?

So now it's up to you! And if you know of IxDA members that you think
would make great Board Directors, please encourage them to apply as
well.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interface Design vs Interaction Design

2008-10-21 Thread Andy Polaine
People [with goal] -- interaction -- interface [of object's
function/features].

I was about to say that the problem with trying to find a single
definition is that it will necessarily have too many clear boundaries.
Really it's a continuum, and I think Jarod's example there is pretty
good. Continuum's allow for overlap and how you interpret anything on
it depends on where you are standing on it.

I'm saying this, by the way, as someone writing their PhD on
interactivity and trying to find and build definitions in it. Sigh. I
don't particularly agree that someone needs a goal to drive the
interaction, not an explicit one at least. A lot of what I've written
about and done in the past has been about play and playful discovery
in interaction, both in an arts context as well as an approach to
interaction design. Play is much more open and not necessarily goal-
based (and when it is, it's a game instead).

Much as I would like to be able to explain to my mum what I've done
for the last 15 years, I think we're still a way off something as
clear as a carpenter.

Best,

Andy

Aaah. Maslow's hierarchy of needs. I was reading some psychology recently
and it turns out that there is no hierarchy - that is, you don't need to
satisfy the lower levels in order to satisfy the higher levels. I just wish
I could remember the book I was reading that cited this! (although Wikipedia
does mention some of the anti-heirarchy research at the bottom of the
article).

2008-10-21 Thread Aadesh Mistry
Exactly Tim!

Users go to bank to manage their money!

How can we enhance this overall experience?

Think about something like setting up your goals for say I wan to
travel to Paris.
Estimate the travel cost and start saving your money to achieve that goal.

You can also track your goals.

This way, you are still managing money and also motivating the user to save!

Any thoughts?

Outside internet banking, however, I do see the use for 2.0 ideas in banks.

Thanks. I will be discussing this with my execs later today.

I do think that amazing designers with good collaboration skills and the right
goals can mitigate the non-designers making design decisions problem by
offering ownership to product teams. Ownership in the sense that they are
involved and feel heard, but the designer still manages the design process and

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Examples of Well Designed (large) Online Forms

2008-10-21 Thread Adam Connor
Thanks to Brooke Baldwin for pointing out that my initial request was
a little unclear.

What I'm looking for are examples of large online forms (or sets of
online forms that make up a larger data collection process).

What is of particular interest to me would be examples where
organizations have taken larger multi-page forms that exist in the
paper world and converted them to some sort of online
representation.

What I'm hoping to gather here is not related to any specific
project I'm working on. Just looking to put together a reference for
members of the company to think about as we progress in moving many of
our paper forms and applications to a web environment.

I hope this clarifies some things. I look forward to any examples you
are all willing to share.

 1) Use screen sharing software (such as Silverback) and the phone to

 2) After a few chats, come up with questions and send out a survey
(you can use SurveyMonkey to capture and analyze the results)

 3) Consider recruiting users who currently live in your country but
have come from India or China. Students are always good for this :)
They can still provide you insights.

 4) Interview the sales reps regarding the users. They actually have a
lot of insights from daily interaction and are a great source of

 Good luck!

If you know of anything publicly accessible or have any private examples

Or you might try and apply for Australian Citizenship online: https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/citz/applyNow.do?form=1300t
(you can save the form and come back to it, so you don't need to
commit!).

They're pretty rubbish as forms go, at least in terms of look, but
they do output (or used to) a PDF copy just like the paper one. I
remember thinking it was remarkably easy given how hard it was to get
residency.

I suppose you are right. I realize that the practitioners with
graduate degrees make up a minority. There are a number of CMU
graduates involved in IxDA, and I would expect that other graduate
programs have courses with similar content. So, why don't we have more
discussions about these qualities of IxD? I suppose it is thought of
as being less practical to the practitioner who is trying to get a
product out the door and in need of quick and dirty usability testing
methods or a solution for a particular type of form interaction. And I
guess that's what you're getting at.

On the other hand, the influence of design for entertainment is
becoming a popular topic, and involves many of the softer pieces of
IxD.

As far as conferences go, for those of you that were selecting
speakers for Interaction 09, what percentage of the submissions were
more academic/theoretical/artistic, and how were they received in
comparison to the more practical submissions? Looking back on it now,
I recognize that I was trying to write a proposal that was solidly on
the practical side, expecting that to be better received. Of course,
these days, I'm very much down in the trenches myself, so that wasn't
a difficult path to take. Was any effort taken to balance the
practical and theoretical with the invited speakers?

And, how would a more balanced conference change the number and type
of attendees? We have complained quite a bit about the overly academic
bent of CHI.

We need WAY more programs in IxD (ooo! I'm about to do that) at the

Agreed (and I'm excited for you!). But I know there are a lot of
intelligent people on this list that would enjoy discussing higher
order topics. Perhaps we all need to make an effort to occasionally
broach them.

it might have been in the book Groundswell, mentioned - that's for folks
that want to shout into the cave and listen for the ecco, in otherwords,
agencies that are good at defining a message, broadcasting (media

politics is represented by things like Obama's iPhone app (I am not stumping

strategy - creating a platform that is Built for Conversation (the title of

Exactly - I don't think any of us would be successful using a method like
this.

Luckily most products don't have an audience of 300 million, but this is
interesting regardless. :)

Will is correct, these are clusters. Clustering is what companies like
USAinfo and others offer as prepackaged market segments. The problem with
these market segments is that they are generic and are typically generated
by statistical analysis of socio, psycho and demo graphics. These three
groups of behaviors are excellent for understanding the how, when and where
of contact and communications with customers. They are not however suitable
as a substitute for design research. They are also not personae. In fact
they do not even make for very good archetypes. The first problem is that
they are aggregate. The best approach for a persona is a deep understanding
of one person that is similar to one of a larger market segments for your
product. The second is the complete lack of depth needed.

We have had some good luck using cluster analysis (prizm and others) of our
user base within specific channels. Basically it helps us look at the
differences between different user groups. This is a far cry from having
deep understanding of user needs and wants.

In general, clusters will give you good information for marketing to
specific customers groups. For designing products, you need different
groupings. You need user segments generated through analysis of 'desired
attributes'. Your product manager will call these features - the user
experience group will likely call these functionality of capabilities.

Don't be fooled into thinking that 'marketing' data and clusters will give
you what you need to effectively design for users. The wrong research, used
for the wrong purpose can be worse than the lack of information.

[IxDA Discuss] Online Questionnaire Best Practices (Anyone remember that Interactions article?)

2008-10-21 Thread Chad Jennings

Howdy all -
I am looking for a resource which outlines list best practices for
online questionnaire creation. Want to provide some guidance to our
marketing team. I remember reading a great one or two page article on
Top Ten Best Practiced for User Questionnaires or something like
that in an issue of Interactions magazine a year or so ago, but cannot
for the life of me track it down. It had a some great items such as
starting with easy to answer questions and to not include a middle,
neutral point (i.e. Satisfied, Neutral, Dissatisfied), etc..

Anybody remember this article or have a similar resource?

As an aside, this Quant research will be complimented with some
Qualitative studies, just mentioned to avoid starting a thread on the
pros and cons of each.

Thanks for the help.
Cheers,
Chad

Can't help you with that specific article, but here are some bits I've
written.

First of all, my rant about why I think it is *crucial* to include a
midpoint in rating scales:
http://www.usabilitynews.com/news/article1269.asp

And two articles that discuss the process of creating a good survey:

Survey response rates: 2% is not good enough

What is an acceptable response rate?

[IxDA Discuss] Event NYCUPA 10/28 - Recipe for Success: A Case Study for Usability Testing Techniques

2008-10-21 Thread Joy Zigo
Greetings,

It has become clear that the blurb for our 10/28 event did not adequately
convey the thrust of the presentation.

While the subject matter involves the presidential election and the
usability of candidate sites, the main subject of the presentation is how to
plan, run, and present findings for a usability test.

The presentation will be of interest to those who are:

● Considering doing some usability testing on their own and want a
step-by-step walkthrough of the process
● Doing usability testing and want to learn a bit more about best practices
● Considering contracting someone to do usability for them

While this presentation cannot convey the amount of detail you would get
from a 1-2 day course or a complete course of study, it will cover the nuts
and bolts of basic usability.

Here are some specific questions Lon will address:

Exploring the process of planning and executing a usability test:

● What does the project timeline look like?
● What are the ranges of expected costs?
● What are the advantages of hiring a moderator with experience?
● Do you need to test in more than one geographical area?
● How long should the interviews be?

Understanding specifics of how this comparative usability test was
executed successfully:

● Writing a tight screener for accurate recruitment of an elusive target
group
● Creating a focused moderator's guide for comparative testing of Obama
McCain sites
● Avoid bias during the interviews through open-ended questions and site
rotation
● Keeping participant emotions in check during the sessions
● Weighing what people say vs. what they actually do on the site for
balanced findings
● How to frame findings recommendations so that they are actionable and
easy for the project team to digest
● How video clips can illustrate and motivate

I hope you can make it!

Best,
MS

[IxDA Discuss] [JOB] User Experience Designers - London, UK - GCap/Global - F/T and Contact

2008-10-21 Thread Kai En Ong
Hi

We're looking for 2 user experience designers to join us. GCap Media -
soon to be Global - is the largest UK commercial radio broadcaster.
Our brands include Classic FM, Capital, XFM, Heart and Galaxy. We're
based in London's busy Leicester Square, in the same building the
stations broadcast from.

Freelance - 2 months, possible continuation into 2009 - £400/day
The project you'll be working on is several sprints into development
and you'll be working within the design framework that has been
established.
Close team collaboration is vital to this role in order to support the
user experience design and testing aspect of the project through to
release. You will be responsible for hands-on planning and execution
of: interaction design, information architecture, visual design, and
usability testing.

Permanent - £negotiable
The second role is a permanent job in the UE team. Are you a dynamic,
pragmatic, passionate user experience designer with expertise in
interaction design, IA and visual design? You'll be experienced at
championing and implementing a UCD process from the start, and enjoy
working closely with a full spectrum of producers, editors, developers
and other from the business. Previous experience in a Scrum process,
5+ years industry experience, and background in media broadcast would
be really valuable.

For both roles you must already be able to work in the UK.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interface Design vs Interaction Design

2008-10-21 Thread Tim Wright
Hi everyone,

I conceive interface design as a combination of visual design (if it is a
visual interface), interaction design, and information design (or IA) and
some other skills. Although they are deeply intertwingled, and some people
might disagree, I see visual design as the part of UI design that lets
people quickly and easily understand and start using an interface,
Information design as the part of design that lets people navigate to
information they need, and interaction design as focusing on the needs and
tasks and goals of the users and ensuring that the functionality is easily
guessable (or intuitive or usable or...).

On Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 5:36 AM, David Malouf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

To be honest, there may or may not be any difference at all at the
level of practice. One term has gained more traction as it has moved
away from GUI software design where UI has been prevelant and has
been encompassing systems design and hardware interface design as
well as service design. In many ways, Interaction design is interface
design (but not graphical interface design). It is about the story
that is made up of moments of dialog between different interfacing
moments made complex through intelligent connections and
 relationships.

To me Interaction Design is an evolution from Interface Design
 historically.

Then academically I think Interaction Design is much more than
interface design in many ways. Interface Design really doesn't have
academic offerings outside of computer science that I have seen. The
closest are interactive design programs that are mostly either
computer arts programs or skills certification programs. But
Interaction Design especially in the European schools has built
itself out of the Industrial Design tradition of design education
that combines craft and thinking processes as well as a long history
 of critique.

So your question can be answered in so many ways and most answers are
going to be skewed by a persons current context and their
community/geography connections to their practice and education. It
is basically evolving, but through IxDA and other efforts I would say
the direction is as I describe it above. But I'm sure others have
 other thoughts.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Web 2.0 for Banking and Insurance industry

Hi everyone,

Is it a bad thing that users are only given a set of tasks to perform? If
their goals are to simply manage their money (as mine are when I go to a
banks' internet banking site) then we might hinder our users by giving them
an innovative and interactive experience.

Outside internet banking, however, I do see the use for 2.0 ideas in banks.
If nothing else, then blogging by the CEO!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Hybrid mailing list / forum?

2008-10-21 Thread Jeff Howard
Hi Josh,

I've discovered several one-off forums that are struggling with the
problem of full-circle e-mail integration. But the only hosted
systems I've found that really support this interaction are Yahoo
Groups and Basecamp.

http://groups.yahoo.com/
http://www.basecamphq.com/

Ning and CollectiveX are web forums with an e-mail component. But
neither allow posting from e-mail and only CollectiveX actually
includes the contents of new posts in their notification e-mails.
Ning just sends a note with the name of the thread and the name of
the poster.

http://www.ning.com/
http://www.collectivex.com/

There's a free solution called Groupserver which has been built
specifically to integrate e-mail with a web forum. It's still in
alpha. They have a hosted version that I've played around with, but
the customization options are narrow. You can download the alpha
version to install on your own server.

http://groupserver.org/

As for IxDA, the e-mail component of the discussion list is powered
by Mailman software (with some custom tweaks), which generates its
own web archive for each post. The website is built off that archive.

You can find a basic implementation of this concept by Bob Doyle at
List-2-Web:

One issue I really had with Idiocracy's premise is where all the
innovation comes from.

I haven't seen the movie yet, I'm working on that. But I am forced
to wonder who invented the interface at the hospital you are talking

platform to run on. Where did that platform come from?

[IxDA Discuss] IxDA Value and Purpose

2008-10-21 Thread Josh Seiden
Hello All,

I'm excited to be able to tell you about some work the Board has recently
completed.

At our Board retreat earlier this month, the Board
(http://www.ixda.org/about_leadership.php) reaffirmed and clarified the mission
of our organization. I am just so excited to be able to share this with you,
and I hope that after you've had a chance to read and discuss, that you'll
share my enthusiasm.

IxDA has always been dedicated to two propositions. First, we are a community
that has come together around a shared passion for interaction design. Second,
we are working to create a new kind of professional organization-one built
around community contribution and initiative.

As we've grown-we now have nearly 8,000 subscribers to our list, 5,000 members
of our LinkedIn group, and Face-to-Face meetings in nearly 60 cities-we've also
seen that some of these core principles are not universally well understood.

Thus, the board felt it was important to reaffirm these principles for
ourselves, and to communicate them to the community. As a result, I'm proud to
share with you our newly crafted Statement of Value and Purpose:

We believe that the human condition is increasingly challenged by poor
experiences. IxDA intends to improve the human condition by advancing the
discipline of Interaction Design.

To do this, we foster a community of people that choose to come together to
support this intention. IxDA relies on individual initiative, contribution,
sharing and self-organization as the primary means for us to achieve our goals.

The Board also spent a lot of time discussing the role of the Board itself,
especially in light of the statement above, which clearly reaffirms our
commitment to being a community-driven organization. The result of that
discussion is an idea that we're calling the IxDA Network. Stay tuned. I'll
explain that in my next email.

Thanks,

Josh Seiden
President,
IxDA Board of Directors

Re: [IxDA Discuss] ISO: Films about interaction design

2008-10-21 Thread Jeff Howard
Hi Kim,

I would suggest that films don't have to be about interaction design
in order to be good viewing for an interaction designer.

Here's a list of films (c.2003) from Richard Buchanan's Human
Experience and Interaction Design seminar at Carnegie Mellon. Each
was intended for viewing in association with readings and topics of
discussion on interaction design.

- William Smock, Isamu Noguchi Stones and Paper (documentary)
- Merchant Ivory, Shakespeare Wallah (feature)
- Peter Weir, Witness (feature)
- Peter Weir, The Year of Living Dangerously (feature)
- Larry and Andy Wachowski, The Matrix (feature)
- Ang Lee, Eat, Drink, Man, Woman (feature)
- Lee Tamahori, The Edge (feature)
- Chris Marker, La Jetée [The Jetty] (short experimental)
- Norman McLaren, Pas du Duex (short experimental)
- Ron Howard, A Beautiful Mind (feature)
- Will Hindle, Chinese Firedrill (short experimental)
- Akira Kurosawa, Dreams (feature)
- Akira Kurosawa, Ikiru [To Live] (feature)

Kim asked:
Are there films (shorts or features) that you would
consider good viewing for an interaction designer?

[IxDA Discuss] Bruno Latour on Design

2008-10-21 Thread Matthew Nish-Lapidus
Hi Everybody,

Since there was a little talk of bringing some more academic
discussion to the list I thought I'd share a great article by Bruno
Latour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruno_Latour)

http://tinyurl.com/6qr477 (warning, PDF)

It is a keynote that he delivered at the Network of Design conference.
I haven't even finished reading it entirely, but already it's really
interesting stuff..

Also, in doing some background reading on Latour I found out a little
about his Actor-Network Theory
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actor-network_theory), which seems to
share some concepts with IxD practice, specifically mental models and
concept maps.

Enjoy!

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interface Design vs Interaction Design

2008-10-21 Thread james horgan
actually i wanted to add something to what i was writing as this
reminds me of the same problem i used to have as an industrial
designer. Whether to call myself an industrial or a product designer.
The actual difference is that industrial may have more engineering
involvement, while the product designer is a more high level thinker.
The choice came down to this: If im at a party, whats the optimal job
description i would tell someone who knew nothing about my area of
expertise. so product designer won the day. I will normally say
Interaction or User experience designer today because it makes most
sense to people and expresses the full range of what i do.

Jack,

I don't think you shirk away from your education. Just because I
have never seen or studied germs doesn't mean I should stop washing
my hands.

Yes, in some cases a disconnect exists between academic research and
general practice, probably in all fields, and probably especially in
one where holding a more advanced degree is not required.

However, the fact that practioners do not attempt to apply what
research they can, when it is appropriate and relevant, should not
diminish the value of that research. It may also be true that
academics should try to make more of an effort to get to know their
GP counterparts.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Interface Design vs Interaction Design

2008-10-21 Thread allison
I agree with Will's argument that interaction design, whatever
the final definition eventually comes out to be, can be more than
what we think of as a standard interface. In his description, I
did not see a civil engineer any more than I see in the description
of an interface/interaction designer a software engineer.

I'm not sure that I'm following the descriptions of what many of
the majority on this list are proposing as what it is that an
interaction designer does. The general examples seem to a bit
esoteric, while the practical descriptions seem to have more to do
with a person's level of autonomy and status at work than their
actual application of skills.

Rather than discuss what an interaction or interface designer is, why
not discuss what it is they are not.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Online Questionnaire Best Practices (Anyone remember that Interactions article?)

2008-10-21 Thread Chauncey Wilson
The reference that Steve gave is a good one. Here are some additional
references:

Dillman, D. A. (2007). *Mail and internet surveys: The tailored design
method 2007 update with new internet, visual, and mixed-mode guide**.* New
York, NY: Wiley.**

Robson, C. (2002). *Real world research (Second edition)*. Malden, MA:
Blackwell Publishing.

Robson provides a readable and detailed handbook of experimental designs,
data collection methods, data analysis, and data presentation. There are
detailed chapters on interviews, surveys, and observational methods.

Schuman, H. Presser, S. (1996). *Questions and answers in attitude
surveys: Experiments on question form, wording, and content.* Thousand Oaks,
CA: Sage.

Schuman and Presser report a set of studies on attitude surveys. The studies
focus on question-answer issues in surveys such as: the assessment of no
opinion, measuring middle position, acquiescence, and open versus closed
questions. The studies were largely done in the 1980s using carefully design
probability samples. The research reported by the authors is compared with
similar research done in the 1940s and some observations are made about
changes over time.

Sudman, S., Bradburn, N. M., Schwarz, N. (1996). Thinking about answers:
The application of cognitive processes to survey methodology. San Francisco,
CA: Jossey-Bass.
*Thinking About Answers* explores cognitive issues associated with survey
methods. These issues include: context effects in surveys, order effects,
event dating, counting and estimation, and autobiographical memory. The
final chapter summarizes implications of cognitive research for survey
design, administration, and interpretation.

One of the issues that I try to impress on my colleagues is that
questionnaire design is not a simple activity. A questionnaire is a complex
design problem where you have to consider things that a single word can
change results substantially and the order of questions and type of scale
and the type of labels and the physical layout of questions can influence
the respondents' interactions with the instrument.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Examples of Well Designed (large) Online Forms

2008-10-21 Thread Jessica Enders
Hi Adam

A while back I designed two moderately-long online forms for the
Australian utility, Origin Energy. They are the first two forms
accessible from this page:
http://www.originenergy.com.au/2070/Sign-up-online. (The third form
was designed by Origin themselves adapting the design of the first
two forms.)

Unfortunately some of the other large online forms I have designed
are not publicly available or not built yet. But good general places
to look are other energy retailers, banking sites (e.g. online loan
applications) and health insurance sites.

You might also want to ask your question on the mailing list of the
international form professionals body, Business Forms Management
Association. You can find their website at bfma.org and the mailing
