Hi , I hope this is the right group to ask

I would like to use a K3S for my HF mobile (CW) operation positioned in the
trunk of the car.

1. Is it possible controlling it only with one shielded control cable
to a K3/0-min (light weight), installed near the dashboard?
2. If so , were can I find such a K3/0-mini used ? Price?

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-mini and FT8/Q65 / Remoterig

2023-03-16 Thread Scott Townley

I didn't find a simple way.

Assuming you have the remoterig set up for SSB/voice, what I did was to
route the soundcard TX audio to the mic input on the radio RR.  To do
that I used an old Rigblaster, which allowed me to easily switch the AF
input to the RR between mic and soundcard. There are many ways to do
this cheaper but I had the Rigblaster gathering dust.

As to RX audio, I used the SPKR output on the side of the K3/0-mini.
That means switching between soundcard RX audio and a speaker/headset
for human RX.  Or you could come up with a similar switching arrangement
as with TX audio.

Hello K3 owners.

My Remote setup is K3 connected to the Remoterig box at the QTH site, at
home operating it with K3/0-mini.,

I prefer CW, but from time to time  want to try some Digimodes.

WHAT TO I HAVE TO DO FOR THAT MODE WITH K3/0-MINI / REMOTERIG.?

Com port 1 and 2 at the Radio RRC is connected to the K3 ,and KPA500.

At the QTH K3 working very well with the connections Line in/Line out to
the PC in Q65 mode on EME.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini and P3

Remoterig does not support the P3/SVGA nor does Elecraft offer a remote option
for the P3.I have the K3/0-Mini along with the K3-KPA-500-KAT500-P3 at my
ham shack in southeast Georgia.

I’m aware of two options for ’seeing’ the P3 remotely:

1. Install a video capture board in the ham shack computer and camera aimed at
the P3 and then view the P3 by accessing the ham shack computer to see the
video. However, I’m not aware of any currently available video capture boards
per se. You’d have to search to see if these are still available. This
approach has been discussed in the past on this reflector, but it has been
awhile since anyone has posted anything about it.

2. Use the IF output from the back of the P3 and connect a SDR receiver (such
as SDRPlay devices), install the appropriate SDR software on the ham shack
computer, and install OmniRig to have the software track the frequency of the
K3/100. I have done this with SDRPlay's SDRduo running their SDRuno software
that has the ‘hooks’ for OmniRig. It is then possible to view a spectrum
display running available through the SDRuno that will replicate what the P3
can show directly. When I turn on the RX ANT on the K3/0-Mini, it allows
OmniRig to interface between the K3 and the SDRuno software and subsequently as
I change frequencies/bands on the K3, the SDRuno software follows along. I can
also set the frequency of the K3 by specifying the frequency within SDRuno
software.

While I’ve done this with SDRPlay hardware and software (I already had the
SDRduo in my shack before trying this), presumably the same thing can be done
with “SDR dongles” such as NooElec using other SDR programs such as SDR Sharp,
SDR Console, etc. However, I don’t know if these packages provide the OmniRig
interface to ensure that the spectrum display is controlled by the K3. SDRPlay
also offers single tuner SDR devices (SDRduo is a dual-tuner) such as the RSP1A
and RSPdx. See: www.sdrplay.com .

Bottom line is that the “work around” is to have a PC in the shack that can
utilize a SDR device (connected via USB) with an IF input coming from the P3
that can subsequently be controlled by the K3 to show a spectrum display. This
means you’ll also have to connect to the PC in the shack through remote
software such as VNC Viewer (from RealVNC.com ) or another
package such as TeamViewer. The SDRplay website does have generic
documentation and videos on how to connect HF transceivers to their SDRs and
how to configure SDRuno so that the SDR can provide a spectrum display (As I
recall, they use the Kenwood 570G as their example). See:
https://www.sdrplay.com/apps-catalogue/
.

Hope this helps,

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Mini and P3

2022-06-09 Thread Julia Tuttle
I'm not sure that's possible. RemoteRig relays serial control traffic and
audio input and output, but panadapters require a separate, broader band
signal (IF for the P3, AF for the PX3) from the rig.

This used to work, back in the K3/0 non-mini days. You'd connect the
two using a null-modem cable, and invoke "terminal mode" with a long
press (~5 seconds) of the MENU button. The manual for the "mini" is a
bit vague, but it looks like its connection to the RRC box is TTL, not
RS232, so to connect that to a K3 directly might require a level
converter interface.

The issue is how to get all of the connections from the K3/0-Mini to the K3.
The “Elecraft K3-Remote Owner’s Manual” (Revision D, April 3, 2014) discusses
two methods of installing the K3-Remote variants:

1. Via the RemoteRig 1258MKII approach that connects to your personal K3 at the
ham shack and a second RemoteRig to the K3-Remote. This is what I’ve done.

2. Using the K3-Remote via a PC through a USB connection. This is meant to
provide access to on-line remote Ham rig services such as “Remote Hams’. I
have no idea what interface(s) are installed at these sites to their K3s.

I don’t know whether the two Remote Rigs would work directly connected through
a reverse cable, you’d probably have to connect both to a LAN where both
devices would be assigned a local IP address (either static or dynamic).

I know that others have responded to your query, but allow me to make some
additional points.

1. I presume that you purchased the remoterig from Elecraft and that you have
the RemoteRig cables from Elecraft to connect the remoterig not only to the
K3/0-mini but the remote rig to the K3. These cables provide the critical
interconnects needed for the K3/0-mini to function properly. The K3/0-mini
manual does a nice job of explaining how to make the proper connections.

2. I use a y-adapter to connect the remoterig PTT cable to the PTT port of the
K3 so that the PTT switch I use at the K3 will still function. There is no
problem having both PTTs connected at the same time. This will allow the K3 go
to into transmit by command of the remoterig or by the handswitch at the shack.

3. I use a stereo y-adapter to connect the Remoterig Audio cable to the
Speaker port of the K3 so that audio will be fed to both outputs. This setup
does cause my external speakers at the station to change volume when remote
operating as it also provides audio to the Remoterig. In other words, the AF
volume on the K3/0-mini will control both audio outputs. Since I’m not at the
station when operating remote and no one is around, having the speakers active
doesn’t bother anyone. If the K3 is located where audio might bother others,
then either turn off the speakers (if they’re powered) or install a cutoff
switch/unplug the speaker(s).

4. Keep in mind that the K3/0-mini controls what the K3 is doing as the
K3/0-mini front panel is duplicating what the K3 is showing on its panel. That
is, as you increase audio on the K3, it is also potentially increasing audio of
speakers at the shack. If you set a parameter on the K3/0-mini, it is
displaying what the K3 front panel is showing as that adjustment is made. One
area to note is how microphone management is done. The Remoterig uses the rear
mic connector of the K3. Thus, on the K3/0-mini, you must use the K3 Menu to
set the mic source to the rear connector. If the mic connected to the
K3/0-mini needs bias, you set that through the remoterig configuration. In
other words, mic selection through the K3 menu has nothing to do with the mic
input of the K3/0-mini itself; rather it determines the mic input used by the
K3 itself. Both the 8-pin connector on the front panel of the K3/0-mini and
the side Mic connector are active. Thus, mic selection using the K3/0-mini
does determine whether the mic input is from the Remoterig (rear mic) or from
the K3 itself (front mic).

5. Management of the KAT500 and KPA500 can be done several different ways.
Clearly, basic operation of both units will work the same as before if the
appropriate cable connections are installed as described in the Elecraft
manuals. One can use a remote connection to a PC in the shack and use the
Elecraft utilities. I prefer to manage the KPA500 with the Remoterig RC-1216H
which provides a web-based display of the KPA500 front panel and is connected
to the amplifier through a RS-232 connection. This allows me to manage the
amplifier with any PC, Mac, iOS device, etc. I have port forwarding set up at
the station so that I can access the RC-1216H directly. As the RS-232
connection is attached to the RC-1216H, I cannot use the KPA500 utility from
the shack computer. However, I don’t see that as a problem.

The KAT500 can be managed using the PC in the shack and then remotely
connecting to the shack computer to manage the KAT500 running on the shack
computer. I manage the KAT500 one of two ways. I’ve installed a
serial-to-ethernet converter (Lantronics) which allows me to directly connect
to the KAT500 remotely and run the KAT500 utility on the PC where I am. Or, I
can have the PC in the shack connect to that same serial-to-ethernet converter
and run the KAT500 software on that machine. In this instance, I use VNC
Connect to access the shack computer using any PC, Mac, iOS device, etc.
Sidenote: If I didn’t have the RC-1216H, I’d probably be managing the KPA500
the same way.

6. Lastly, please keep in mind that if you’re intending to remotely operate
from a significant distance from the shack, it is imperative that you test

All 15 pin Y cables are not the same. You need to have all 15 pins
connected from end to end. VGA cables will NOT work.

but wanted to bring my K3 with me for the winter so I replaced it with a remote
IC-7300. While up there for the summer I used to switch to remote mode when I

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 and CW

2019-07-25 Thread Fred Jensen
OK John, congrats on getting it to work.  Most of those settings do not
apply to keying, but some will apply to getting N1MM+ working.

Without N1MM+, unplug the USB cable from the front panel of the 1258.
Get into Control Panel-->Device Mangler-->Ports and plug in the USB
connector to the computer.

You should see 4 virtual COM ports appear, named:

RRC1258 COM0(XX)
RRC1258 COM1(YY)
RRC1258 COM2(ZZ)
RRC1258 COM Extra(UU)

The number in parens is the number assigned by Windows.  The RRC1258
COM1 port is the CAT port to the remote radio.  Start N1MM+ and go to
Configure-->Ports.  If you get a "Radio not responding" message, cancel
it.  In the first configuration line, select "YY" [windows assigned port
for RRC1258 COM1], K3, uncheck, uncheck, and click on Set.

In the window that comes up, 38400, N, 8, 1, Always Off, Always Off,
Radio 1.  Uncheck Allow ext interrupts, uncheck the next 4 boxes,
Footswitch=None, Polling rate=50% slower, OK.  The next row should be
for your Winkey if you're using one.  Find the COM port # by unplugging
and see which one goes away in Device Mangler and select it.  None,
check CW, Set.  In set window, Always off, Always off, VFO 1, PTT
Delay=20, uncheck ext interrupts, and check Winkey if that's what you're
using, and None, None, OK

Close N1MM+ and restart.  That should do it for you.  Remote operation
involves a lot of "moving parts." The odds of getting it to work on the
first try are slim, if you do, go buy a lottery ticket.  The CAT on the
remote K3 must be 38400, N, 8, 1.  Nearly all of the buttons and
controls on the K3/0 should work as if you were at the real radio site
including the MIC and PHONES connectors.  I'm not sure you can record CW
or Phone messages in the memories from the control site, I've never
tried because W7RN is a shared multi-user site.  Typing a frequency into
the N1MM+ CALL field in the Entry window will [or should] send you to
that band/frequency.

Let us know your progress.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 and CW

2019-07-22 Thread Fred Jensen
Ummm ... sometimes we tend to inflate the magnitude of a problem ...
just try it out.  Plug a straight key [or your keyer] into the KEY jack
on the K3/0 and see if it works.  I believe the odds are way better than
even that it will, especially if the cable plugged into the 1258 I/O
jack is part of the "quadrapus" cable set that Elecraft sells for
exactly this purpose.

I do not have a K3/0, I operate W7RN remotely with my K3, and the I/O
RJ45 on the back of my 1258 is empty, so I key using pin 4. However,
I've coached several with K3/0's to get configured properly for W7RN and
they plug the key, bug, or keyer into the KEY jack.

Try it out ... we're Amateurs, what could go wrong?

You need to use the RRC's I/O port. See the RemoteRig manual pages 94,

2019-07-22 Thread Fred Jensen
John: If you are using the "Quadrapus cable set" that Elecraft sells for
the K3/0-RRC1258 combo, I believe the answer is "Yes."  I remote to W7RN
using my K3 and don't have a K3/0 but I've coached others who do get
their configuration right and that's how they do it.  Pin 4 of the RJ45
I/O connector on the back of the 1258 is the key line [pin 8 is ground]
and you can use it instead, however the Elecraft cable set takes care of
all the interconnections for you.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 etc remote control system followup

2019-02-26 Thread David Windisch
Hi, all concerned:

The remote system is now installed and operating in the site pictured on my
QRZ page.
A 40M inverted-vee dipole at 120 ft apex height does play fairly well.
Better antennas and higher power are forthcoming

We had a long cold dark thunderstormy late session setting up the
SPECTRUM-provided ARRIS router properly.
SPECTRUM does not allow access to the router by WAN; only by LAN.
Next test will be to take a generic router to the site and see if we can set
it up for WAN access.

Tks for the responses to my question re inaccessible K3S functions.
I'll take that issue to the remoterig reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 etc remote control system

2019-02-22 Thread Richard Ferch
Dave,

I know this works with the DVK voice memories, because I have done exactly
that. However, you will not be able to program CW/digital message memories
as easily, because they have to be recorded using the K3's internal CW
keyer (from the paddle jack). You can't record them from the straight key
jack, which is the CW keying connection that the RRC uses.

There is an alternative way to program these messages using the K3 Utility,
but I don't know whether you can safely use the K3 Utility over a remote
connection for this purpose.

If you use radio control/logging software that has the capability to use
the Winkeyer in the RRC, that software probably has its own CW message
memories that you can use instead of the K3's message memories (for
example, the function key messages in N1MM+).

For similar reasons, the CW-to-Data feature (sending RTTY or PSK using a CW
paddle) is not likely to be possible using a remote connection.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 etc remote control system

2019-02-22 Thread Fred Jensen
You can send from the message memories pre-programmed into the remote
K3, however you cannot program them remotely as you found.  I'm not sure
about AD REC and AF PLAY, haven't tried them.  I don't believe you can
program macros into switches remotely either, but again, haven't tried
although I believe if the remote K3 is programmed [e.g. PF1=SPKR+PH],
then I think you can activate it from your control K3/0.  After thinking
thru how the K3/0-K3 interface works, these few functions make sense.

Hi Jorge,

On the Elecraft website, click on the menu, select *support, manuals *and
in the next window click the red *view *button next to *K-Line Product

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Firmware

2018-07-26 Thread Mitch Wolfson DJ0QN / K7DX

Barry,

No, I didn't notice anything, but my understanding was that I needed to
make the update(s) to maintain compatibility between the control and
radio side.

Firmware updates have slowed way down over the last few years, but there
were a number of enhancements made within the period following the
release of the original K3/0 and then K3/0 Mini that required to update
both sides and keep them in sync. I can't remember the details or why,
but Wayne or Eric would remember. I still do my best to maintain them in
sync, although this may no longer be as critical as it was in the past
(I am not into taking risks and it only takes a couple of minutes).

Thanks for the clarification on updating the K3/0 or K3/0-Mini

Question:   Once you updated the K3/0 or K3/0-Mini with new firmware,
did you notice any changes in capabilities of the “control site”
equipment (K3/0) or compatibility with the K3/K3S ‘remote site’
equipment (which presumably has newer firmware as well)?

I ask because I’ve been fairly diligent about updating the K3 firmware
from time-to-time but haven’t updated my K3/0-Mini devices at all (I
have a device at two different locations).  The oldest K3/0-Mini was
purchased in August 2014.  I’m wondering how critical the updates are
to the “K3/0” devices.  From what I can tell, the K3/K3S firmware
revision documentation doesn’t differentiate between features that
impact the K3/K3S versus what impacts the “K3/0” devices.

Dennis and Hisashi,

I have updated my K3/0 from time to time using the newest firmware for
the K3. Just connect the PC directly to the COM port and the K3 Utility
will recognize and update it.

In the “Firmware and Software” page

), there aren’t
any firmware packages specifically identified for the K3/0 and K3/0-Mini.

In the Manuals and Downloads page
(http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm
) there is a “K3-Remote”
selection:

-The latest K3-Remote Owners Manual (PDF) was released on 3 APR 14
(http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K3%20Remote%20Owner's%20Manual%20%20Rev%20D.pdf
)

-The manual (Page 22) makes clear that the K3 Utility is compatible with the
K3/0 and K3/0-Mini:

"From time to time, new features may be made available to K3/0, K3/0-Mini and
K3 owners via firmware upgrades that you can download and install. Please visit the
Elecraft K3 software page (www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm) to obtain our free
firmware download application, the K3 Utility. This program runs on PCs, Macs, and
Linux platforms.”

The document on page 22 also explains how to determine the unit’s firmware and
serial number:

"Use the K3/0, K3/0-Mini or K3 CONFIG menu’s FW REVS menu entry to determine
your firmware revision. The serial number of your K3/0, K3/0-Mini or K3, if needed,
can be obtained using the SER NUM menu entry. This is the serial number of the K3/0,
K3/0-Mini or K3 at the control site. It is not the serial number of the equipment
used at the remote site.”

By “remote site” this is defined as the K3 that the K3/0 or K3/0-Mini is
connected and the “control site” is where the operator is located (K3/0 and
K3/0-mini). See “List of Terms” on page 4 of the “K3-Remote Owners Manual.”

Since the “K3-Remote Manual” is now over four years old and an updated document
has not been released, it would also seem that the firmware installed on the
K3/0-Remote devices hasn't been updated.

That said, the manual does not clearly state whether a separate firmware
package is used by the K3/0 and K3/0-Mini versus the K3/K3S. The wording could
be interpreted to suggest that the same firmware package is used for both the
“Remote” and “Control” devices. Perhaps Wayne, N6KR or Don, W3FPR can clarify
this for us.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-0-mini / K3 dilemma

2018-05-16 Thread Mark Goldberg
Not knowing much about the protocol Elecraft / Microbit uses, or the IT
staff at the facility, I have doubts about what is being done to figure out
what the problem is. There are tools, such as Wireshark to look at the
packets as they flow through or don't flow through the network. You don't
have to guess. It is likely that some firewall is blocking the packets,
either outgoing or returning. Firewall rules may need to be set up or
changed. Microbit looks like it requires port forwarding for ports
13000-13002 and that must be done in any routers in the way. If they are
doing double NAT on two routers, both will have to get port forwarding set
up. A good IT person should be able to figure this out with the right tools.

All that being said, I don't like port forwarding. I created an incoming
VPN that can be connected to from outside my network using OpenVPN. There
are issues with various firewalls letting the VPN through but if they
connect, the remote device looks like it is on the local network and
everything works, and is encrypted end to end. That is not easy to set up
though.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-0-mini / K3 dilemma

2018-05-16 Thread rich hurd WC3T
I'm just spitballing here, but could the net connection there be double
NATted so that the rig can't see the packets returning (since they have a
different address?)

Packets are packets. I had this problem - loss of connectivity - albeit
with a media server in my house that I wanted to be able to hook to
remotely. I called my ISP who pinky swore that they were not double
NATting the address. I did some digging and logged into my cable modem and
sure enough, NAT was turned on (which meant there was one translation in my
router, and one more in the modem.) Double NAT. Turned it off in the modem
and bingo, the server was visible to the world.

I'm hesitant to tender this solution, mindful of the old saw that "if the
only tool you have is a hammer, every job looks like a nail." But at
least it's something you can eliminate and it might be good for thought.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 TO K3 NOT WORKING?

2017-09-23 Thread Fred Jensen
When you power your K3/0 down, does the remote K3 turn all the way off
[i.e. go totally dark]?

Who is beeping -- K3/0 or RRC?  Control-end or remote-end?

Does it do this *every* time [i.e. totally repeatable]?

Is your control path *really* "through the Internet ... IAW does your
remote-end RRC have an IP address outside the sub-net the control-end
RRC is on? ... or are they both DHCP-assigned by your router?

The control-end RRC will beep at you [out the SP jack to whatever is
plugged into it] if the remote-end RRC/K3 is already on.  It's a busy
signal to another user.

This happens each morning. On Friday the 22nd I turned it on at 5 AM and 5

When I tried to recycle the K3/0 to turn on the remote it would not
initialize and would just beep at me.

This is all be done in my shack at home but via the internet thru a router.
The router can see both of the RRC-1258 boxes and IP addresses which are
good with the software, Microbit Software manager.

I’m at a loss and can’t figure out what is causing it not to work when it
works well in the morning. I can shut it down and back up in the morning but
after an hour and more it will not start up again. Just beeps. Could it a
cable?

I had Friend stop over with his K3/0 mini head and that did not work either.
I changed the K3 remote radio with another K3 radio and that did not solve
the problem.

Any Ideas would be a big help.

Wayne,

That sounds like a "flaky" internet connection may be your problem.
Talk to your ISP support people - it may take 2nd or 3rd level techs to
get to the bottom of it.

I took a 1.5 x 1.5 x 4" scrap piece of structural foam and cut a small

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 control not working with DXLap or N1MM

2016-09-09 Thread John Langdon
Jeff,

I can connect the the K3 at the remote transmit site or via local LAN - only
difference is the "SIP CONTACT" address in "RADIO SETTINGS" on the RRC
Control. I use DHCP for the control RRC when on the LAN.

Can you connect to the RRC radio unit via a browser interface from either
the remote location or over the local LAN? That is the first step.

It's normal for the K3/0-mini to present two virtual COM ports.

Jeff, can the K3 Utility talk to your K3/0-mini (when no other

Jeff,

How many DE-9 connectors are there on your USB to serial adapter?
If only one (which is normal), then only one COM port should be defined.
That fact that you find 2 COM ports in device manager is cause for
question unless you have an adapter with 2 physical serial ports.

2016-03-11 Thread Mitch Wolfson , DJØQN / K7DX

Fred,

Go into the RRC's web menus and click on "keyer settings", then go to
"side tone" and adjust the db down to an acceptable level.

Hi Fred,

Change your RRC Control setting under Keyer settings
Side tone -db [50-0]:
Set it to more reasonable value, 0 is the loudest, value is in "- db" :-)

Set it to 45 or 50 and you must see the difference

Hope it helps

they are two different animals and the mike connection is different.

You can either use VOX or connect a footswitch to the back of the Mini

The microphone should have a mono 3.5 mm plug. That would go into the MIC

I wired up a PTT using the K3/0-Mini "PTT" jack on the rear; plugged my
headset/mic into the left MIC/SPKR jacks and it WORKED...

Apparently, you MUST use the hardline PTT for the K3/0-Mini to accept MIC
input from the left side jacks. Pressing the XMIT button and using CAT
control did NOT enable the headset mic to work...

The question remains - why would the design require a dedicated PTT for
headset use? I thought plugging the headset into the left MIC jack
"disabled" the front panel MIC (8 pin) jack...

Anyway, I did want to share with the the group.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 - How to enable left side mic?

2016-02-28 Thread JOE

The manual for the K3/0 says:
"It uses its internal speaker and front headphone jack for receive
audio, and its front

microphone connector for your mic input."

In other words you need to use the front mike connector on the K3/0.
The mike connector on the back of the K3/0 is actually an output to the
RemoteRig box. This is different than the back of your K3/10 K3/100
radio, where it is an input. You need the special E85051 (or homemade
equivalent) cable that connects the K3/0 "SPKRS" and "PTT IN" to the
RRC1258 "AUX/MIC" jack. BTW, the "PTT IN" on the K3/0 is actually a PTT
output from the K3/0 to the RRC1258.

You may be able to make a direct connection to the RRC1258 "AUX/MIC" for
your headset. I've never done this, but it may be possible.

The HM2 mike is an Electret that needs bias on. Both Heils are probably
Dynamic and need bias off. You'll have to check the Heil literature. I
don't know how bias is controlled in the K3/0 so I don't know how bias
on/off woks at the K3/0 but it's worth mentioning as a possible problem.

If you are using the E850511 that came from Elecraft, there is a
possibility of a "digital noise" problem. The pairs used for mike audio
are split between two pairs, causing an imbalance. This may or may not
show up in your K3/0.

There is also a small noise problem in the E980207 speaker cable that
goes between the K3/0 and the RRC1258. I fixed that with isolation
transformers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 - How to enable left side mic?

2016-02-28 Thread Oliver Dröse

Jim,

the menu settings RF.L, RF.H, etc. only effect the remote K3, *not* the
mini! So do not change them, they need to be configured as needed on the
remote side.

For the mini there's no selection. The front panel mic socket is enabled
as long as you do not plug-in anything into the left mic socket. As soon
as you do it will disable the front panel socket and take audio from the
3,5 mm plug.

Internal to the K3/0 mini is a jumper that sets mic bias for the 3,5 mm
socket. Maybe you need to check if it is set accordingly. Mine was, I
had to disable it to allow me using my non-electret mic there.

While we appreciate the interest in additional forums, we can not watch them all
and only only infrequently read all the ones on Yahoo. If there end up lists for
every product we make, it will quickly be impossible for us to participate in
all of them.

If you have a question on using our products, please place it here first (or at

RemoteRig when I purchased my K3. All I can say is that it was indeed fortunate that I
had someone who has set up a number of remote stations with RemoteRig to guide me through
the process. It is not "a walk in the park" for someone who has not done it
before. Hopefully this new forum can help.

David from Elecraft did send me a separate communication dated June 2015 (K3
and K3S Remote System FAQ) on remote operating, and I've found it very helpful.

If anyone cares to join the list, elecraft_k3-0-subscr...@yahoogroups.com should do it,
but going to http://groups.yahoo.com and searching for Elecraft_K3-0 would be best. It
will be moderated. Please place your callsign in the "why you want to join this
group" for quick approval.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Forum

2015-10-12 Thread James Beitchman
Eric,

I am pleased to see this topic raised,

I was one of the first users of the K3/0 mini with a long back-ordered unit.
For me the set-up process was lengthy (5 weeks working at two sites 100
miles apart), painful, educational and eventually very successful. I am
delighted to be able to experience excellent multi-mode ham radio from my
Manhattan basement office with my K3/100 more than 100 miles from here! To
get the system going (every aspect of my current set up is now carefully
documented), required numerous communications with Brandon by e-mail and
phone (he was very patient!) and directly with RemoteRig in Sweden - even
two phone calls. I can easily identify why this was so difficult. The
terse manual from Elecraft and the huge document from RemoteRig were written
by and for people who have Internet networking familiarity and experience.
Though I am a technical professional, I had no such experience -
understanding and using DDNS services, SIP, port forwarding, ports in the
DMZ, etc was a new challenge. The manuals from either provider did not
really help with the fundamentals of Internet networking set-up for a first
time user.

While I fully agree with the respondents who have suggested that a single
source - Elecraft - should provide a single manual that addresses both
RemoteRig and K3/0 set up and operational issues, some way must be found to
address the market/users that do not have familiarity with Internet
networking in general. Maybe there is some already existing primmer that you
could supply with the equipment or the manual could contain a chapter with
the basic networking information. I suspect that such information would
reduce Brandon's e-mail by a huge amount. Your job is not primarily to
educate users on Internet networking, but I think there is a large community
of potential K3/0 owners/users who would benefit from such basic
information; it would rebound to Elecraft's benefit, I'm sure.

73 from a happy K3/0 mini to K3/100 user.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Forum?

2015-10-12 Thread George K5KG via Elecraft
K1KNQ and I have recently set up W1YL with a K3/0-Mini using and
remotehams.com, and the RCForb software. In this installation, the
K3/0-Mini is directly connected to a Windows 7 machine via two virtual
comm ports.

W1YL is able to connect to any number of remote stations using the
RCForb software, and has been successful in making a number of CW Qsos
using W8RJ as the remote stn. In W1YL's case, she is located in an
apartment with good broadband service, but no way to put up an outside
antenna, so the remote set up is a good solution for her.

The only documentation that we had available for doing this installation
was what we found on remotehams.com. The K3/0-Mini's manual was of
limited help. In W1YL's case, she had never used a K3, and was totally
unfamiliar with how to operate the K3/0-MIni and its many "tiny and
confusing" controls. We provided her with copies of some of the more
relevant pages from a K3 manual, but what really brought her up speed
were several training sessions on how to connect to a remote station and
use the K3/0 and its many controls.

It has been an interesting journey.

Mike,

I don't know what email client you are using, but I am using
Thunderbird, and that email address in Eric's post came through loud and
clear - It was even underlined and colored in blue.
Bottom line, that is not being done by the Elecraft reflector - it must
be something in your email client that is causing the addresses to be
truncated.
OTOH, I notice you are responding through Nabble - it may be a
"feature" of Nabble - I receive my Elecraft posts directly from the
reflector - mailman.qth.net.

2015-10-11 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
To be practical, there just is no way for a maker of transceivers to keep
up with all 3rd party generators of software/hardware.

We depend on Elecraft engineers to be working on Elecraft products.

Also, there is a 22 page manual for K3/0 and the remote protocol for Remote
Rig, which Elecraft sells and supports at:

http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K3%20Remote%20Owner's%20Manual%20%20Rev%20D.pdf

I would squeeze out of that whatever you can.

Since they sell RRG, they do have to keep up with RRG.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Forum?

2015-10-11 Thread Barry Baines
Ed:

Part of the “confusion” may be due to how different organizations/groups
utilize the remote capabilities of Elecraft products. Which areas should be
the responsibility for documenting which aspect of remote operations? For
example, do you expect Elecraft or Remote Hams to provide appropriate
documentation for using the K3/O with a Remote Hams connection?

Second, the K3/O can be ‘connected’ to a K3 through various means. I would
suggest since Elecraft offers the Remote Rig hardware as part of their product
line offerings, their focus should be on getting the Remote Rig hardware
properly interconnected with the K3 at the radio site as well as the K3/0 at
the remote site. This includes proper remote rig configuration, which can at
times be confusing due in part to network issues.

In my opinion, Elecraft does a reasonably good job in their brief documentation
in connecting via Remote Rig. I was able to get it done once I dealt with with
some network issues.

There is also the question of connecting the K3/0 to a local PC which in turn
connects to a PC where the K3 itself is located to provide the connection. I
don’t know how many people use this approach, but the documentation may indeed
be in need of improvement.

What is particularly lacking is understanding more complex setups beyond SSB
where documentation is needed to explain how to setup digital modes and how to
use computers at the remote site to do digital modes. There is also the
question logging using a computer next to the K3/0 which gets into the question
of proper com port configuration. The question of feeding audio and control
lines to a PC at the remote using the available connection ports off the K3/O
or the Remote Rig “box” is not intuitive, nor is how best to use the two
available com ports that can be managed between the remote site and the radio
site (ham shack where the K3 is located) to feed data.

Third, we need to remember that the K3/O’s front panel and menus control the K3
that is connected to the antenna. When you setup filters, set frequencies, set
audio levels, etc. on the K3/0, you are directly interacting with the K3 at the
ham shack. Even changing the volume level on the K3/0 to make for a more
pleasant listening experience with the K3/0 internal speaker is in fact also
changing the audio level of the speaker out of the K3 itself. That is why I
always turn off the powered speakers at the K3 so that varying audio levels
don’t result in loud speaker output at the ham shack where the radio is located.

Fourth, for those of us that use the Remote Rig Hardware, there is a Remote Rig
forum available through Remote Rig. There are some issues that more properly
handled by the Remote Rig support process, such as how to finagle a connection
through hotel WiFi services where a login is required. In my opinion, Remote
Rig needs to come up with solutions to these issues, not Elecraft.

FWIW,

Barry Baines, WD4ASW
Westborough, MA
Folkston, GA (ham shack site)

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Forum?

2015-10-11 Thread Phil Wheeler
You could always start a Yahoo Group with such a
focus, ala the ones already there for K3/K3s and KX3.

Here having a single email reflector for all
Elecraft products makes the most sense, IMO.
Separate ones for each product would be a tad messy.

Part of the “confusion” may be due to how different organizations/groups
utilize the remote capabilities of Elecraft products. Which areas should
be the responsibility for documenting which aspect of remote operations?
For example, do you expect Elecraft or Remote Hams to provide appropriate
documentation for using the K3/O with a Remote Hams connection?

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 Forum?

2015-10-11 Thread Ed Gray W0SD
I don't want another forum I just want decent documentation on the K3/0
mini in regards to the remotehams software. http://www.remotehams.com

I have two remote rig set ups. I have used them for several years from
many locations back to my home station. I have used them with the
computer(TRX manager) I have used them with another K3 and the K3/0
Mini. I have used them on SSB, CW, RTTY, Digital. I have used them
remotely with Writelog and done remote contesting. I of course have made
a lot of DX contacts remotely.

You can get help from the Remote Rig forum and the company. You can
also get help from Elecraft, the e-mails and the K3/0 Mini manual for
using the RRC boxes so it is not bad. I don't have any big problems
with the K3/0 Mini and the Remote rig boxes although there are some
things missing in the documentation by both companies.

What I am talking about is using the K3/0 mini for
http://www.remotehams.com/ (remotehams)

For example do people know there are several jumpers inside the K3/0
Mini that are totally undocumented in the manual or anyplace else I can
find? Do people know how to get the K3/0 Mini apart? It is not sold as
a kit. There is more but I will leave it at that.

The bottom line is the K3/0 Mini manual in regards to remote hams is
"weak"! It should at least have a diagram or reference to a diagram on
line. We are not dealing with another hardware product here. We are
dealing with software that if you go to the site says sponsored by Elecraft.

I should know better than to make a post but I thought I might be able
to get some help for other K3/0 Mini owners or future owners for at
least a schematic but mainly all I read is defense of the status quo.
I am QRT on this subject. I will talk to Elecraft support tomorrow.

The user will not be able to make some changes on the remotehams.com K3 at the
remote site, for obvious reasons. For example he will not be able to access the
transmit EQ menu and make changes which might degrade the K3 for the next user
who has a different microphone. I am not familiar with what menu items are
locked out, but I know at least some are.For now, if I may make a suggestion,
it would be for the new user to familiarize himself with the front panel
controls and not worry at all about any menu settings.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini

2015-09-05 Thread Barry Baines
George:

Other than the specific instructions needed to connect the K3/IO-Mini to a K3
trough a Remote Rig device, there is nothing different about setting up and
operating the K3/IO-Mini than there is in operating the target K3 itself. Keep
in mind that the front panel of the K3/IO-mini (including all knobs, menus,
etc.) directly controls the corresponding settings of the “remote” (or
“target”) K3 that it is connected to. When you change a setting on the
K3/IO-Mini, it is actually changing the settings on the target K3. If you go
into the configuration menus, you’re changing the configuration of the target
K3.

The only exception off hand that I can think of to this general statement is
that K3 must be set for “rear panel” microphone so that the mic feed that is
coming from the “remote” K3/IO-Mini to the target K3 which in fact is fed to
the rear panel connection of the target K3, is utilized. Otherwise, if a front
panel mic source is selected, the audio will not be fed into the target K3 from
the K3/IO-Mini.

The real question is whether the operator is familiar with using a K3 and knows
how to configure settings to meet their needs. Thus, reviewing the K3
operating manual makes much sense since that is what is being controlled by the
K3/IO-Mini.

My comments are based upon using the K3/IO-Mini via remote rig directly to my
remote rig controller at the target K3 (e.g. the 1258MK II system) and NOT
using remotehams.com service. I am not familiar with remotehams.com setup, but
presume that the same concepts apply.

Hope this helps,

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-06-01 Thread John K3TN via Elecraft
Hi, Jim - I'm a big fan of your guidance on bonding/shielding. There aren't a
lot of variables to play with between the K3 Mini and the Remote Rig - I did
all the usual things that have solved hum in the past, but didn't see any
improvement. I'm going to run the Mini off of a battery, see if that solves
the TX hum - but I mostly do CW, so haven't gotten back to it.

The RX audio problem is pure attenuation, I can crank up the gain on the RRC
to overcome that attenuation in the Mini audio path but then I'm likely to
be introducing distortion in the RRC.

2015-05-30 Thread Brian Sheets
YahŠ it sucks. I knew when I moved to an apartment that staying on HF was
going to be a challenge, but I was not prepared for the breaker issue. I
found that with my kx3 and a wonderwand wonder loop on my kitchen table,
that with 10 watts I can do some jt65 and wspr on 20m without popping the
breakers. But my success has been limited and not worthwhile.

I¹ve been a remotehamradio user for almost a year now, but I don¹t have
much interest in ssb or cw these days. Remotehamradio does have a beta
test going on for ³logging² software such as ham radio deluxe. I¹ve tried
jt65 over it, but haven¹t had consistent results and get disconnected or
have HRD lock up. I¹ve been avoiding buying a K3/0 for some time, just
because I didn¹t want to spend the money on a ³non radio² device. But if
I¹m going to get back on jt65, I think its my best option.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
I recall reading something in an ARRL publication or newsletter that at
least one manufacturer of AFCI breakers has addressed and corrected the
problem of RF susceptibility. That company is Eaton.

It is a bummer that consumers must suffer from products that do not have
sufficient RF immunity. If all manufacturers would 'step up to the
plate' and accept that we live in a world where RF is present, often in
strong fields, we would not have a problem. Hams are not the only cause
of RF problems - think of the problems encountered by those who reside
near broadcast stations. RF fields are emitted by police, fire and
other emergency service transmitters.
IMHO, more manufacturers must be willing to design products that can
withstand reasonable RF fields. Of course, most consumers do not
understand that, and the ham is to blame. There was a parallel back
in the 1950s and 1960s with television interference when many TVs were
designed with front ends and IF chains that would pick up RF on most any
frequency, much to the consumer's dismay and blame placed on the ham,
even if his transmissions were clean of harmonics.
It just about drove operation on 15 meters off the air because many TV
sets used a 21 MHz IF that was 'wide open' for interference.

It all depends on what you want to achieve.

There are many different reasons for hams to want to operate RC. Different
requirements probably call for different solutions.

If you want to operate your home rig (or for that matter a real remote rig)
when you are not at home, eg. when travelling, it might be both expensive and
unpractical using the K3/0-Mini and RemoteRig set. Expensive or not depends on
your financial situation of course. But you will spend something like 1270 USD
and you will have to carry around some boxes and cables etc. But you have the
luxury of having a very attractive man/machine interface!

Still for the traveller: If you want an inexpensive solution, if you can accept
to operate your rig from a computer screen and *if* you anyway carry a laptop
ot iPad (or even iPhone) and you already have a PC in your shack (you can do
away with a cheap notebook) you can limit your investment to less than 100 USD
and still operate your K3+KPA+Kat500 quite satisfactorily. I dare to say so
because I have done it for many years (20k QSOs over 10 years, all CW).

You will need to dig into some details about setting up networks and handle
computers, so if you dont like to do this, it might not be your solution. I
would not say it is free of problems/challenges, but I started from scratch,
and am very satisfied with how it works.

But if on the other hand you want to set up a stationary operating pos. for a
remote station, it is a completely different ball game and I think the
K3/0-Mini and RemoteRig set is by far the best solution for that situation.

So my advice to you is to first of all find out what kind of use you are
looking for and then select a solution.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-29 Thread PKA
Joe
I use one of three different solutions:

1. From a laptop I use two Winkeyers connected over IP via K1EL WKremote
Server/Client programs. Keying may be either using a paddle or using the laptop
keyboard. Alternatively it is possible to use only one Winkeyer at the remote
rig and input by keyboard via Teamviewer. Audio is based on IP-Sound which is
excellent for CW ( superior to Skype).

2. From an iPad or iPhone I use an app called K3iNetwork made by Mike KS7D.
Keying using the keypad. You can even use voice input to the iPhone/iPad (and
key your rig) using SIRI, but this is not yet useful and needs some more work
on the app. But it could be developed to be an interesting mode for RC
operation from a moving car. Audio based on Skype.

3. From an iPad or iPhone I use an app called K3iDitDah also made by Mike.
Keying is done using the touch screen in a way like touch-type paddling.
Although this app can be used as it is now it still does need some development
work. Audio based on Skype.

NB: It is possible to switch between solution 1 and 2 (or 3) on the fly while
receiving!

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-27 Thread John K3TN via Elecraft
I've been using the Remote Rig interfaces with my K3 for several years and
the K3/Mini for the past 6 months or so. I'm a big fan of the Remote Rig
devices, not a fan of the K3/Mini.

I started out doing remote operating with the K4VV group using an all
software approach and the Remote Rig devices are an enormous improvement -
reduction in latency, better audio quality, the ability to essentially just
have a very long mic/key/headset cords vs. doing remote PC control.

You still need a decent Internet connection. The Remote Rig interfaces will
**not** correct for packet loss or high jitter (variable latency) Internet
connections. If your round trip delay is much over 150ms, or varies widely
from ping to ping, or if you lose packets, CW in particular will not be
usable.

The Remote Rigs also have a gazillion parameters and the manuals don't quite
get you there - almost everyone has to resort to the million monkeys
randomly hitting keys approach to get everything going. The forums on the
Remote Rig site are very helpful and W1UE in particular has posted a lot of
good K3 guidance.

The K3/Mini has been a big disappointment, especially at the price - I
should have just gotten a bare bones K3. The major problem has been the
audio on both TX and RX when connecting the headset to the Mini (vs.
connecting to the RemoteRig). On TX, I get loud hum and on RX, the audio is
20db down compared to the audio coming out of the RemoteRig.

I sent the Mini back, Elecraft sent it back saying it worked fine. (They
didn't even contact me, which I objected to and they are fixing that problem
in their process.) On RX, apparently that audio loss is due to a filter that
was put in to deal with digital noise getting in the audio, but running the
AF gain at 90% on the Mini is not acceptable to me - distortion up and no
head room for low signals or turning off AGC, etc.

So, I have to connect the headset to the RemoteRig, then audio is fine - but
the cabling is less convenient and messy. Part of the reason I justified
spending the $700 was to be able to essentially use the Mini just like I
would a real K3, but I can't do that. I may bring along the Mini and
Remote Rig set up on travel some day if I keep the Mini - that portability
is about the only reason to keep it.

Others have had the same audio issues, others just naturally connect their
headset to the RemoteRig, others have had no problems with the Mini - your
mileage may vary.

2015-05-27 Thread Gerry Hull
Good perception, Jim... experience pays off. We had this same problem
with Andy, K2LE. We have two remoterig remote ends connected to the same
common remote station. My audio has been flawless. Andy kept having poor
audio -- muffled, microphonic sounds but no clear audio. It turned out to
be the power supply, which was an underpowered switching supply. The
RemoteRig box does not come with a supply. I power mine off of a 4A
switcher, and it's fine.A 1A supply should work, but they seem to have
issues.

 Hi John,

I know nothing about these products other than a vague one paragraph
functional description, but I do suspect an issue with the audio interface
and/or how the units are powered and bonded. Take a look at the pdf of my
slides for a talk I did on this topic at Pacificon last fall.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0-Mini - Experiences?

2015-05-27 Thread Gerry Hull
I've been using the K3/0 mini for about a year for casual DXing and for
many contests.
The K3/0 mini is perfect -- a mirror of your K3. Once you get used to the
the fact that
you are setting menus on the Remote radio, all will be good.

The mix that is important is how you use the K3/0 to interconnect it to the
remote shack.
As stated here, many users are using the MicroBit RemoteRig product. This
adds about $750+/-
to your remote cost, but provides a far superior result than any other
method.

The killers in remote operation are latency and jitter (jitter being the
varying difference in latency over time.)
The Microbit boxes use dedicated hardware, and a very flexible software
configuration. to allow you to tailor the box to your needs. The
RemoteRig components are not designed specifically for the K3; therefore,
they have a generic interface design, and Elecraft sells the specific
interconnect cable for the K3/0.

The majority of my contesting experience has been on CW in the Majors: CQWW
and ARRL DX, running remote to K2LE/1 from my QTH in NH. The shack has
1.5Mb/.5Mb DSL service. The average latency on the connection varies from
120-150mS, with very manageable jitter. We run the RemoteRig boxes with
8kHz bandwidth, and this works very well. I don't feel handicapped by
being remote at all... In many QSOs, I get unsolicited comments of great
audio on SSB, and no issues with CW. It is just like being there.

The Microbit boxes do have a lot of configuration parameters. You also
have to know how to port forward from your router in the shack (unless you
are using the box in your own home, and both ends are on the same LAN). If
you are not familiar with networking, configuring the boxes can be a
challenge. As the others have stated, the forum on the RemoteRig site is a
good resource -- search it with Google first, as much of your frustration
has already been experienced by others.

Their is another solution with the K3/0 which is essentially 15-minute plug
and play. It is a free solution, once you own the K3/0. This is the
software and website of Brandon, KG6YPI -- an Elecraft employee and the guy
you usually talk to if you are experiencing problems with the Microbit gear
and K3/0.

Your K3/0 has a USB connector on it. This connector can be plugged into a
PC, and two codecs (send/receive) and two RS-232 connections (Rig Control
and passthrough) are automatically installed.

Brandon's site is www.remotehams.com. Their is PC software for the remote
end as well as the server end.
You can use Brandon's software without the K3/0 -- but it has some very
cool features:
- If you have a K3/0 and a K3 at the station, you get full control of the
radio with all features.
- If you want to connect to a remote on RemoteHams, where the remote is NOT
a K3, you can still use the
K3/0 for frequency control and other features.

I use RemoteHams to control Dom, 3Z9DX's station, and run SSB from Poland.
It works very well, though the overall
latency is much higher.

CW still has some work to be done. But I know Brandon is getting there.
I've asked Dom if I could try his station in some contest on CW -- it will
be interesting to see how that works out.

I use both RemoteHams and the Microbit RemoteRig solution with the K3/0,
and am very happy with both; I will continue to use RemoteRig in serious
contest situations.

2015-05-26 Thread Kari SM0HRP
Hi!
I have used the K3 mini extensively over the year. Both over a ADSL line and
4G. . Latency is dependent on the internet access - on ADLS it is 10 ms on
4G 30-40 ms.The K3 mini is so well established and works so well with the K3
and the RRC 1258 units so it is just for you to go and buy it. There is no
big difference with different codecs. I use the next lowest quality level
and when running dual mode it consumes about 400 kbps. Going for better
audio quality I could not hear the difference to be honest. I have worked
over 700 QSO:s over a year and all major Dx-peditions on almost all bands
which proves the quality of the system. My system can be seen on qrz.com.
I control ACOM2000A:s and OM 2500A:s with rotor controls from Green Heron.
Works UFB.
Join the satisfied Electraft K3 remote club. You wont be disappointed.
