Re: [Finale] shortcuts

2019-11-13 Thread J D Thomas
Steve is right to suggest this. I haven’t seen it on my system for a long time
since using Finale 25. Altho when it did appear for me, it was usually in the
form of continually putting in the wrong element and was frequently the last
one I added with a meta tool. If his suggestion doesn’t work, the only other
thing that did work for me was a complete system reboot. A PITA but it these a
try.

Re: [Finale] Mid-measure double carline?

2019-11-11 Thread J D Thomas
As others, including myself, have suggested, split the first measure into two
2/4 bars. Exclude them from being included with the measure tool so it won’t
affect your overall measure numbering scheme, whatever that may be.

Staying in the Measure tool, double-click on the half of the split measure you
need. This brings up the Measure Attributes dialog where you can change the
barline from the top row of the dialog to a double-bar. You can also use the
options in the lower half of the same dialog to hide or show the time and key
signature. It’s quite easy.

2019-11-10 Thread J D Thomas
There are two ways I can think of: add a pair of lines with the line tool and
adjust it manually, or break the measure via the time signature tool and change
the barline as needed. But the latter will throw off your measure numbers
which will need adjustment.

But why do you need this? Just curious.

Re: [Finale] Find where expression or articulations are assigned

2019-10-04 Thread J D Thomas
Whoa, don’t get me started on the Lyric window. I could rant for days!!!

On that same opera I mentioned in my previous message, the lyrics were
completely unmanageable. I spent 10 days reentering all of the lyrics in both
acts, creating a verse for each character in the opera. It helped immensely.
But, then the client had someone else edit the file who didn’t know or
appreciate these issues and screwed it up again. I told him I would no longer
work on this opera for him!

Re: [Finale] Find where expression or articulations are assigned

2019-10-04 Thread J D Thomas
I created them with Keyboard Maestro on a Mac. Basically I select an
expression and run the macro to delete it and then deal with the ensuing
dialogs that tell me the expression is being used, and I select an existing one
to replace it. It’s not the greatest, but it does reduce quite a bit of the
dialog clicking that goes with this operation.

Good tip Jef. I am in the habit of whenever I copy/paste from another file, I
immediately go into the Expression dialog and delete the latest dupes. I even
have macros that automate the process somewhat to reduce the tedium of this
operation. I repeat the same process with articulations. It’s an obscene
PITA, but I do it to keep the libraries from becoming bloated. I worked on an
opera several years ago that had 1800 measures in the first act and 1600 in the
second. The client kept making edits that were best resolved via C/P. The
libraries were a complete cluster-f*** and I spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME cleaning
things up. So your tip would help matter some.

Hopefully someone can help with this. I don’t ever see MM addressing this

Robert,

I cannot provide you with an answer but I am hoping someone, including you, can
come up with a solution the this long-standing Finale issue. I encounter it
ALL the time when copying and pasting from another Finale document. Finale
always duplicates the expression and articulation, no matter what. I have been

Re: [Finale] Inefficient Management of Cross-staff Notes with Reversed Stems

2019-09-02 Thread J D Thomas
I deal with this issue all of the time but, if I understand you correctly, it
usually occurs with cross-staff notes with reverse stems. My workaround is to
have two versions of the same articulation: one’s position on the note side
and one on the stem side. If the staccato dot appears on the wrong side, I
simply delete it and place the opposite one. IOW, if the dot is meant to be on
the note side and it’s flipping on CS notes, I replace it with a dot on the
stem side; or vice versa. Then Finale seems to place it correctly. I’ve been
complaining about this for years. In later versions of Finale, they now have
an auto placement for articulations. But I’ve been doing this workaround for
song long, I haven’t tried that.

The other thing you could do if you don’t really care to actually have two
notes, is to only enter one note and use Special Tools to put the stem on both
sides of the notehead. I’ve done this many times and it’s fast and easy.

2016-11-06 Thread J D Thomas
Robert Patterson has brought this up many times, and I can attest to the fact
that it does indeed work:

Run an older version of Mac OS on a virtual machine using Parallels (my app of
choice) or Fusion. I have a VM with OS X Mountain Lion and I run a couple of
older versions of Finale for those times when I absolutely need it.

Granted you have to purchase another commercial application, but the viable
option is there.

Re: [Finale] 2012 vs 2014.5 speed test

2016-07-23 Thread J D Thomas
Hi Raymond,

I have been having very similar issues with a two-act opera I’ve been working
on. Each act is about 1500 measures, full orchestra and up to 18 characters in
vocal lines with lyrics. Everything you’re experiencing I have been dealing
with for the past several months:
saving file takes up to 18-20 seconds.
time signature changes takes about 90 seconds.
instrument changes take over a minute.
JW Navigation plugin refuses to work at all on these files, but it works fine
on other files.
Lyric editing can be most frustrating. I have each character with its own
separate verse for overall organization, and sometimes, when selecting a verse,
I get the spinning beachball for over a minute. But it’s quite random.
File size more than doubled when converting from 2012.

This is all in Finale Mac 2014. 2014.5 is worse; completely unusable.
And, to be honest, things weren’t much better back in 2012. I abandoned that
version since it’s quite buggy under my current OS, Yosemite 10.10.5.

I have discussed these issues with MM, and they confirm Finale doesn’t like
large files! No shit Sherlock!!

I know this doesn’t help your situation, but you’re not alone here.

[Finale] Jari-Plugin malfunctioning suddenly

2014-08-12 Thread J D Thomas
Hi Jari,

I'm working on a rather large Finale file in FinMac2012. I've been using the
JW Space Systems v1.12 plugin extensively and suddenly the other day it started
doing something unexpected: instead of positioning a single orchestra system
in the center of the page, as I have it set up to do, it's executing a fit
music command. IOW, it constantly takes the systems on one page and moves them
to the previous page. This started happening about 3-4 days ago, and it's
still doing exactly that. Just this morning I tried it again, and same thing,
with the same exact measures. And now those measure are about 20 pages back.
Weird. I've restarted my Mac and Finale, but it steadfastly keeps screwing up.
Unfortunately it's now a completely deprecated plugin for me.

I have not tried it in Finale 2014. Too busy to mess with that.

Re: [Finale] default rest question

2014-05-16 Thread J D Thomas
Standard notation convention is to simply use a normal whole rest. Ever read
something in 12/8? I would say the composer was being over-anal when writing
the original manuscript.

You could go against convention and substitute a double-whole rest, but why
create more work for yourself?

Finale uses a whole rest as the default empty measure rest, but I'm
not sure if this is preferable, or a double whole rest (which is what
actually is written by the composer in his autograph score). For a
modern edition, is standard practice for an empty measure in 4/2 time
a whole rest or double whole rest?

If the concensus is double whole rest, how does one get the double
whole rest centered in the empty measures?

 Thanks,

Re: [Finale] Entering text into Shape Designer

2014-04-26 Thread J D Thomas
As you already most likely know Robert, Shape Designer is probably the WORST
module in Finale. I think it's virtually unchanged since I first used it way
back in Finale 2.0, early 90s. You cannot copy / paste anywhere it in to me
knowledge.

Whenever I need a certain character anywhere in Finale, I try to insert it with
PopChar, a commercial utility. But even then, Finale's copy/paste routine is
horribly inefficient and probably broken, at least on my system.

I wish I could be of further help.

I wholeheartedly agree with Eric on this one, provided one's situation allows
it. I have 12 core MacPro that I just got before the 'new' MacPros came out,
and with 4 drive bays, I was able to do a clean install of Mav, migrate my user
account etc., and it still gives me the option of going back to ML, which I do
most of the time right now.  To be honest, I am not at all impressed with 10.9;
Apple's sloppiest OS transition to date IMO. Mail still doesn't work right and
the main reason I wanted to try it out was multiple monitor support, which is
OK, but some applications, like Apple Mail, refuses to remember window
positions regarding a 2nd monitor.

Those who use iMacs and laptops won't find this method quite as easy unless
going with external drives. That's one of the reasons prefer the old MacPros.

As far as Finale is concerned, it seems OK, but then I still do 99% of my work
in ML, so take that with a caveat as it was intended.

For those of us with Apple Cinema displays, there is a bug in update 2014a that
occurs on startup that has no current workaround. MM recommended I go back to
2014, which I did.

Just venting…

Re: [Finale] Locating the Plug-in Folder

2013-12-11 Thread J D Thomas
There are two Application Support folders: both in Library, one at the root

Re: [Finale] random thoughts on 2014

2013-11-19 Thread J D Thomas
I agree. My notation experience goes way back to well before computers entered
the scene and it was all done by hand. I was schooled in LA where, as is the
case pretty much everywhere, you never, ever have enough rehearsal time. So
the music should be notated explicitly where absolutely no questions arise.
That just wastes time.

In overly complicated, non-key-signature pieces, courtesy accidentals are
completely warranted, especially in 2-handed parts like piano and harp.

'Go back to school'??? Get over yourself!!

where cautionaries are necessary, even when there isn't a key change, and I
have figured out after many years that NON-parenthesised ones actually are
 easier to read.

I know that parentheses make logical sense, that a parenthesised accidental
is kind of like saying, I KNOW you know this, but here's a reminder to
differentiate it from one that is absolutely necessary. But from a distance,
parentheses around an accidental makes all three (sharp, flat, and natural)
into the same outline, so you have to read more closely to see which
accidental it actually is. Already, sharps and naturals are easy to confuse
with each other; the parentheses make it worse. I keep getting caught by
these on the gigs I do where the Finale user is less than professional. And
Sibelius seems to have this redundant accidental default that puts in
accidentals on the SECOND of two tied notes!

On a follow up, while Hide Staves works very well for hiding empty staves,
sometimes you might need to hide staves that actually contain music. I
discovered this myself recently when a client requested just such a scenario.
I learned, with Darcy and Robert's help, that you can apply the Staff Style
Force Hide and Collapse to accomplish. It may come up for you, and it's really
handy to know. You get to it from Staff Styles.

[Finale] Finale Default Fonts Massaging

2013-01-23 Thread J D Thomas
Please help me out here. There were several discussions some time ago about
manipulating certain text files responsible for controlling the default fonts
within Finale, namely now for me, FinMac2012. I thought I archived them but
alas, no go.

Can someone here enlighten me and point me in the right direction? I want to
control the default text files mainly, so when I begin a new file, import XML,
etc. I don't have to go thru and change them at that point. This is possible,
yes?

TIA.

Re: [Finale] Playback bug

2012-12-29 Thread J D Thomas
I have had this happen many, many times. It's directly related to the stuck
key metatool bug that has been long, long-standing. A complete Mac restart is
the one sure way to relieve it, but if you do use metatools frequently, you
will most likely encounter it again. I sure do.

Short of a reboot, try running your fingers across the QWERTY keys several
times and, if you have one, the numeric keypad. This is a trick I learned here
on this board, and it has worked for me about 90% of the time.

Let us know how you make out.

Someone suggested here that the next time it happens, run your fingers over the

until the next occurrence. In a long Finale session of several hours, I can

also have the c and i keys that stick pretty often but not as much as 1. I
have many different machines that I work on and I work with many different
templates created from different composers/arrangers/publishers and the
same keys get stuck no matter where the file comes from so it does not
seem to be template or file specific. It appears to somehow be user
driven. Why I would see the same stuck keys on different machines is just
bizarre to me when I know other people that have the t key as their main
stuck key which rarely, if ever sticks on any of my machines.

I've explored changing all of my metatools to different ones in my files
to see if the sticking bug would move to a different main key but no
change. The number 1 was still my main key.

A while ago I looked into your question of certain menu items being
highlighted before the sticking occurs and I was able to rule that out.
For example, while being in the expression tool I placed forte marks using
meta-tool 5. As I am holding down the 5 key I click on all the staves that
need the forte marking. After 4 times of clicking fortes into the score,
the next time I click, my main stuck key's item, what I have assigned to
meta-tool 1, shows up even thought my finger has not released the 5. This
is just an example, it can happen after one click it can happen after 8
clicks. There really is no pattern.

The stuck key issue occurs about every 15 minutes at a minimum and every
30 seconds max. for me. Unfortunately I'm used to this workflow since I
have no choice but to work with it. It's a terrible way to work because I
cannot completely concentrate on what I'm doing because I'm always worried
about what I just accidentally clicked into the score.

solution is imminent. Restarting the Mac was the ONLY solution that actually
did work and for me, in an average 3-5 hour editing session, I will encounter
it several times. I do use a ton of metatools when I work in Finale.

However, one user on the Finale user board suggested that when it happens again
to run your fingers across the keyboard and numeric keypad a few times. I

Andrew,

I've been going thru the exact same malady involving QuicKeys. The application
is in trouble and it's currently languishing due to the chief programmer for
Startly dying last year. There's direct info on their website.

I'm still on SN but I did find a viable substitute for QK, Keyboard Maestro.
It's very robust and stable, and it does everything I need it to do even tho it
doesn't have a couple of QK bells and whistles. They have a 15 or 30 day trial
so you can get a feel for it. The only downside is you will have to
reconstruct all of your shortcuts. I winced at that at first, but it made me
rethink them all, especially the ones I use in Finale; and my old Finale QK's
were massive in their sheer number. And that turned out to be beneficial for
me.

Try it and see if it works for you.

Someone on the Finale user board did say he was using the latest version of QK
in Lion with no issues. But I felt QK was bogging down my system under SN and
was concerned about using it under Lion. Could be a moot point tho.

I am now using Keyboard Maestro and am finding it quite robust and more than
usable here. The caveat was that I had to recreate all my Finale shortcuts
which probably turned out to be a good thing since it made me rethink all of
them and in some cases they became more efficient. It is missing some of QK
niceties but all in all, it's eminently usable.

Craig,

FWIW, I WAS able to create a 2nd ending tie in Finale 2012 Mac using the

If you're not able to do this, I suspect file corruption. Because it DOES work.

Using the Speedy Entry tool, option-click on the measure in the 2nd ending
where you want the tie. This brings up a rather extensive dialog box with
many, many checkboxes. At the bottom there is a checkbox option called Tie
End. Check it. When you go back to your score, you'll see the tie.

I agree Finale should do this automatically. But this option has been
available on every version of Finale since v2.0 back in the dark ages (1990s).

[Finale] Finale and an ongoing problem

2012-07-13 Thread J D Thomas
Here's one for the weird and unexplainable. Even tech support at MM has no
answer, so I throw it up for the edification and advice of the collective
knowledge here.

I've had an ongoing problem with Finale for quite some time. It happens in
Finale 2007, 2011, and 2012. I'm on a Mac 10.6.8 (but I also had it on 10.5.8
Leopard as well). MacPro 2 x 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon.

I am a keyboard fanatic; I really don't like using the mouse unless there is no
other way. So I have always made copious use of the built-in metatools in
Finale, ever since version 2.0 back in the dark ages. I also have used
keyboard macro programs but this issue is solely within Finale and involves
only their metatools.

I will be editing a file and everything will be fine. I use the numeric keypad
to execute metatools and I have a system I've developed for every tool and
every file I work in so that it is easy to remember file to file.

What happens is that all of a sudden Finale stops recognizing the numeric
keypad for metatools. I hold down a number, click, and whatever tool I'm in,
up comes the usual dialog box as if I just double-clicked. The numbers along
the QWERTY will work however--sometimes. I have had numerous experiences
lately where Finale will get stubborn and NONE of the keys work, including ones
I've programmed for letter keys. In fact, if I click in the score with any
tool, Finale will steadfastly place the last entered element I used for that
tool. This happens with Articulations, Clefs, Expressions, you name it. Every
tool that utilizes metatools.

Quitting and relaunching the program never helps. Logging out and back in
works sometimes. Restarting seems to work all or most of the time. But the
issue keep recurring at some point, even after a restart. And it's pissing me
off!

It's not the keyboard because I've had the same problem with 4 different ones,
wired and wireless.

Doug at tech support finally threw in the towel stating they'd heard nothing
along these lines from any other user and he tried everything he could think of
to no avail.

I then considered that it just might be a user account issue, since I've use
the same user account for the past 3-4 years or so, and it's the same MacPro.
So I set up a new, virgin user account, started editing away in Finale 2012,
and bang, this morning it happened again! Just like all the other times.

If anyone has any suggestions, advice, I'm all ears. The new user account was
my last stab.

I am at a loss.

When you request a key signature, it makes a distinction between a
major key and a minor key with the exact same pattern of sharps and
flats. For example, they call C minor a DIFFERENT key signature than E
 flat major.

Why even give it a name? There should be only 15 choices 1-7 sharps,
1-7 flats or NONE. Instead they make you do about 30 choices. you have
the 12 keys, but there are TWO name for 3 of them.

This creates a lot of confusion. Whether you transpose the notes or not
should be a option which is checked or unchecked. Instead they call it
other. There are lots of situations where you want to change the key
signature, but keep the note pitches the same.

This could be put on a greatly simplified menu. For example:
 1) no of sharps or flats, and
 2) what kind it is: sharp or flat, or non-standard.
 3) three check boxes: No tranpose, enharmonic, or diatonic.

By non-standard I mean a melodic minor for example.

[Finale] Different Problem

2012-04-01 Thread J D Thomas
OK, this will be different.

I have a client that I've laid out a 400+ measure score for string orchestra.
When I first started it, I knew there would probably be some quarter-tone
notation, but I didn't set up a nonstandard key; I opted to do it in C.

Now edits and rewrites are coming back in and there are a some places where
quarter flats and sharps are needed. So, as I've done in the past, I set up a
non-standard key setting using the appropriate symbols the client wants. So
far so good.

The problem is now all the original sharps and flats are 1/4 tone low thruout
the score. The only way I've been able to fix them is one at a time; tedious
to say the least.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I may be able to fix this? Normal
transposition routes are based on 1/2 steps, so that doesn't work.

Thanks.

A thought along these lines might be to have a user-defined key combo that

more 10 pixels, or any other user-defined amount. I find I use that a ton in

What Richard says is true, but you can also export the Finale file as EPS via
the Graphics Menu. This will open in Illustrator and everything is editable.

[Finale] Global spacing question

2012-02-28 Thread J D Thomas
Hey all,

Finale Mac 2011—

I used to know how to do this, but…

Where is the global setting to adjust the default amount of space between
accidentals and the initial barline? IOW, the first notes in any measure that
have accidentals; the space between the barline and the first accidental.
Right now Fin2K11 puts too much space for my tastes and it adds up measure to
measure as I do layout. I do seem to remember there was a global setting
somewhere to adjust this. But I can't seem to find.

Or, was I just dreaming?

TIA.

Hi Ryan

Good news and bad news. What you suggested wasn't it. Changing that setting
did nothing to my score. But the ensuing lookup in the manual did locate the
right setting: Document Options Notes and Rests Spacing Before Music -
that did it.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

2011-12-30 Thread J D Thomas
There are some chord symbols that try to approach a specific voicing scenario.
Like Am7/D or C/D to avoid the conflict between the 3rd and the 11th. And most
of the time they work pretty well. But overall, chord symbols are pretty
inexact, leaving it up to the player to decide how to voice it. Obviously that
can result in a mixed bag of results depending on the player.

I've tried it both ways over the years, depending on how anal my overall intent
was. If I really needed something specific, I spelled it out somehow, either
via a specific albeit odd chord symbol, or I just wrote the voicings out. But
the system can still allow a large margin of dissatisfaction at times,
especially if you don't know the ability of the players involved.

You nudged some areas in my gray matter Chuck. I'd forgotten how many times
I've written something simple like a chord symbol and the player made it better
than I expected. Grant Geismann used to that all the time during many
recording sessions back in the 90s. He really spoiled us at times because he
always brought something unexpected and creative to the process.

it's always been that way. Notation is never complete.

And I disagree with the suggestion that add 2 has voicing implications. In
my experience, it simply means a major triad with an added 2nd degree
somewhere in the voicing - anywhere except in the bass.

[Finale] Finale locks up

2011-02-10 Thread J D Thomas
Finale issue:

An annoying situation has been recurring with Finale 2007 as well as 2011 for
me for the past several months, maybe longer. After launching the application
and working for a while, the application becomes completely nonresponsive to
any further edit, tool changes, everything. The only thing that does occur is
clicking anywhere on the page starts playback. Clicking a 2nd time stops
playback. Quitting and relaunching does nothing. Logging in and out also
accomplishes zip. The only remedy is a complete restart, which is past
becoming annoying.

This is definitely not file-specific, and it occurred under OS X 10.5 as well
as SN 10.6. And as I said, both versions of Finale, 2007 2011. Same exact
problem. There also does not appear to be any time pattern. Sometimes it
happens after a few minutes of work, and other times it could be an hour or
more.

Any ideas?

I'm on a Mac Pro, OS X 10.6.4, 8GB RAM.

Re: [Finale] Finale Mac 2011 question

2011-01-28 Thread J D Thomas
Back in Finale 2007, the last version I've used before 2011, it was, and I
believe always has been, option-shift click to auto-paste in a selection at the
point of cursor click. I know this since I've had this programmed into a
Kensington mouse button for as long as I can recall. Finale v2.01, circa 1990.
Anyway, now with 2011, option-shift-click brings up the filter options window
as you pointed out. OK, as now designed. Option-click does work, but it adds
the selection at the same point rhythmically. Not what I expected, but I did
finally find this reference in the manual, and again, it's as designed
currently. (Does any other Finale Mac user long for the older PDF manuals? I
sure do. But, I digress…) I also found that one can now hilight and drag to
specific points in the file, and obviously copy/paste works as expected. This
slight change just caught me off guard.

Thanks for everyone's input on this question.

Maybe you have the filter settings pared down to something that doesn't copy
anything. New in recent versions (I think 2007) is that you can always select
partial measures without going to the menu first.

If it doesn't work that way on your Mac, try rebooting the computer, then if
that doesn't solve it, try trashing preferences (make sure you trash the
right ones! It's tricky!) If that doesn't solve it, try reinstalling Finale,
then I would resort to tech support.

It's a diagnostic tool to verify that all parts have fermatas in the fermata
measures. Checks for articulation and expression fermatas in the following
fonts: Maestro, Maestro Wide, EngraverFontSet, Jazz, Broadway Copyist,
Articulations (by Bill Duncan). For Finale 2009 and above.

Download from the Finale tips site:
 www.finaletips.nu

Downloads section, Plug-ins for Windows subsection.

 Best regards,

Re: [Finale] De-authorising Finale

2010-12-30 Thread J D Thomas
You don't say what Finale version you're using, but I had exactly the same
issue with FinMac 2007 after I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I called MM and they
told me they no longer supported v2007, there was nothing they could do about
it, and would gladly take my order for a 2011 upgrade. Yeah, right.

Bottom line: you're probably out of luck unless you upgrade. Sorry.

If I simply open the program the normal way, it sends me away with a tick in

However, if I attempt to do this by clicking on the icon on the desktop,
 nothing happens.

If I go to the program file in its folder and click Run as administrator
the program begins to load but hangs.

I think I figured out a solution previously, but I've forgotten what it was!

 Any help gratefully appreciated.

Re: [Finale] De-authorising Finale

2010-12-30 Thread J D Thomas
Finale 2007 will NOT allow the user (me) to authorize, deauthorize, install, or
even run the POS application under Snow Leopard. Every time I try to launch
the program, I get a dialog stating I need to authorize my copy, saving and
printing are disable until I do so. Same computer, different hard drive, newer
OS. I talked with a woman at MM (don't remember her name) and that was the
gist of the conversation.

Another stake in the heart of my relationship with MM and Finale.

Authorization has nothing to do with support for previous versions. It sounds
like you were talking to someone who did not understand what you were asking.

{Spam} Re: [Finale] New plug-in: JW Rhythm Copy

2010-12-27 Thread J D Thomas
Jari,

All these plugins lately are great, and I'm sure we'll all glad to see their
development. Is there any timeline for Mac versions?

 Hello!

I've created a new plug-in called JW Rhythm Copy. It copies a rhythm pattern
from one source region (layer 1) to a destination region (any layers and any
number of staves). The pitches are kept in the destination region. If the
source contains articulations, these are copied to the destination.

This plug-in is quite a productivity booster IMO and can be used for many
different tasks. Download from the Finale Tips Site (Downloads section -
plug-ins for Windows) if you need it. For Finale/Windows 2010 and later.

There's also a PDF manual with some examples there for download. Please take
a look at it, it shows some advanced use of the plug-in.

I'm going to create a couple of more Windows plug-ins during the next few
days, then I'll unpack my new iMac and try to port them to OSX.

[Finale] Finale's GUI ongoing anomaly

2010-12-23 Thread J D Thomas
Finale has had an annoying GUI quirk as far back as I can remember. At least
since 2001, maybe before that. And it still exists in 2011.

Why is it that whenever you open an existing file, switch to Page View, print,
and then close the file, Finale asks if you want to save it??? Huh??? Even if
I've made a modification, save it, then print, it asks if I want to save it up
closing!?!?!

Is it just that the programmers or designers at Coda, MakeMusic, whatever
they're called this week, they just don't get it?

Maybe this has been discussed before, but…

OK. A built-in kludge that the programmers inserted. Didn't know that.
Thanks. (I've had a QuicKey for years that got around the asinine dialog).

But, it doesn't address my original question: WHY???

I know of no other Mac application that reacts this way.

Re: [Finale] Sibelius question

2010-10-05 Thread J D Thomas
The best way is via XML. And I have done this hundreds of times over
the past 2-3 years, using the Dolet 5 plugin and exporting from Finale
Mac 2007. It works remarkably well for the vast majority of the music
elements: notes, ties, slurs, tuplets, etc. Even lyrics and the
overall page layout. It does bring over all the text elements as
well, but once their in Sibelius, many of them are simply the wrong
category, and have to be changed manually. Not really that big a
deal. The plugin does co$t, but I believe the newer versions of
Finale can export XML better now. Finale 2007 is pretty rudimentary
in that regard.

Can Finale files be imported into Sibelius? And/or the other way

I should know this, after using Finale since Version 0.0, but I don't.

Help!
