onboard sound does not work

2004-02-09 Thread by way of Gaf [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello.
I am a newbie to both unix and FreeBSD. I am trying to configure my onboard
sond without success.
 My motherboard: ASUS P4S800-MX
Audio spec: ADI AD1888 6channel audio codec.

pciconf -lv says:

I tried kldload snd_driver.ko but
kldstat says:

 51 0xc3306000 2000 snd_driver.ko
 61 0xc3308000 8000 snd_maestro3.ko

I have device pcm in my kernel.
Is there something more you need to know??
I have read man pcm, the handbook and complete freebsd but I can t figure it
out. I still think that everything is a bit confusing because i am not very
good at computers and i am sure that I miss something fundamental.
Hope that somebody can direct me to what i am missing.
Many thanks Gaf

Help to configure FreeBSD as server

2004-02-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I configure my home FreeBSD OS as server. I run FreeBSD under
WinXP with VMWare Workstation 4.
On my work, Web Programmers company, FreeSD is configured so
(DNS under FreeBSD is configured for zone office.net with hosts host1
 host2),
that from WinXP I can ping host1 and host2 without domain name:

windows xp console:
ping host1 - ok
ping host2 - ok
ping host1.office.net - ok
ping host2.office.net - ok
XP PC is user of workgroup, DNS-suffix is empty. Only DNS in
LAN settings is entered. That's all.
I have configured my home DNS under FreeBSD with office template. I have
entered DNS,
but at home I can ping only full host names (with domains):

windows xp console:
ping host1 - no reply
ping host2 - no reply
ping host1.office.net - ok
ping host2.office.net - ok
Why? I can't understand. I try to solve this problem 5 days, but
nothing helps me.
When I entered DNS suffix: office.net - OK. But in my office that works
without DNS-suffix.

Apache + DNS

2004-02-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I configured DNS (bind9) and Apache in FreeBSD 4.7 (IP: 192.168.1.1).
My server name on FreeBSD - myserver.mydomain.com
This server configuration:
1. /etc/resolv.conf
  domain mydomain.com
  nameserver 192.168.1.1

2. Bind config:
  I have domain:
   mydomain.com
  This domain hosts:
   server(192.168.1.1) - server and DNS-server (FreeBSD)
   site1(192.168.1.1)
   site2(192.168.1.1)
   xpcomp (192.168.1.10)

3. Apache config (httpd.conf):

  NameVirtualHost myserver.mydomain.com

  VirtualHost site1
   ServerName site1.mydomain.com
   ServerAlias site1
   DocumentRoot /usr/local/proj/site1/html
   ErrorLog /usr/local/proj/site1/_log/error_log
   CustomLog /usr/local/proj/site1/_log/access_log common
  /VirtualHost
FreeBSD is a Virtual Mashine (based on VMWare Workstation 4) under WinXP.
In Windows XP Lan config I wrote:
DNS - 192.168.1.1.
My Computer settings:
 Name: xpcomp
 Workroup: MyWorkgroup
 DNS suffix: mydomain.com
When I in browser load my local site with url http://site1/ I want, that
browser automatically to the end of base url addes domain name in bind
config.
Examples:
http://site1/ - http://site1.mydomain.com
http://site1/test/index.html - http://site1.mydomain.com/test/index.html

How can I make this think? What config i need to correct: apache, bind or
something another? (I can show my bind config files)

Question on cvsuping ports tree

2004-02-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I was reading a article at www.onlamp.com in the FreeBSD section regarding
the use of the portupgrade package. As I was reading the article, it stated
that everytime you cvsup your ports tree, your /usr/ports/INDEX file should
reflect the update with a new time stamp, showing the last time the ports
tree was updated.

After updating my tree today and checking out the /usr/ports/INDEX file, it
should the incorrect date. It should a date about a week old actually.

SO my question is, what is going on? Is the article incorrect in what it
stated? Or is there something else I need to do that I am missing?

I do appreciate the help and explanation.

Re: new install of 5.2 ISO aft hour system freeze cold reboot onlyoption

2004-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Everything runs fine for about an hour and a half then everything freezes
(
doesnt recognize keyboard, mouse, anything etc ) and i have to do a cold
 reboot ( ouch! ).

Do you have X running or any additional cards/devices/drivers in use in
the machine when this occurs? Which ethernet are you using etc.

-with X running or not, the only possibly 'non-standard' thing running is
the 4-way usb/multimeida kvm switch i'm using. (iogear) but other than
being a half-assed cheap switch it's working correctly and doesnt' seem to
have anything to do with this.
I have 2 onboard nics, a 3-com and nvida built in but i'm using a SMC
(Accton|SMC2-1211TX) which is working fine, also seems to be unrelated.

I do believe this to be related to ACPI but have no proof.

Does this still happen with ACPI disabled?

- good question, i have been trying to track this down to bios or other
settings or issues before running the kernel with ACPI permently disabled
but that may do it. I'll boot tonight with it off and see if that helps.

Having ACPI enabled can also cause interrupt related problems in some
configurations.

- do you mean disabling ACPI in the kernel when it asks if you want to
permanetly disable?

-
I also recieved this answer from a user:
In bios
Disable power management options.
Set operation system option to other, or just not ms/windows,
disable all plug-n-play options.

I did this last night and it ran for 2 hours without incident.
(had to go out, didn't want to take the chance of it freezing up when not
home, so i shutdown) but it did run for 2 hours with no problems and did
not freeze up.

thanks for the responses

HELP PLEASE FATAL TRAP 21 PC98

Ok People...first I'll admit that I suck at bsd and
I'm a sorta newbie. I'm using a PC 9821 Ls150 with the

message below and it restarts my box ever time:

I was told to put ddb in the kernel but I can't get to
a prompt to open the kernel conf file. None of the
boot commands seem to work ie...gdb or the flags. What
can I do ...am I just doing it wrong. How do I stop
the error?? How can I get to a prompt that will let me
ls and cd to boot/kernel and so forth

possibly lost data by Burning Raw Data CDs

2004-01-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Greetings;

Was running FreeBSD 5.1 Release on a Dell Inspiron 8500 with
a CD-RW/DVD Combo drive and backed up data onto several
new CD-RWs simply as follows:

burncd -s max data archive.tar.gz

Then after installing FreeBSD 5.2 Release, tried restoring
as follows:

tar -xvzf /dev/acd0

And unfortunately ended up with only error messages such as
input/output, unexpected end of archive/file and child
returned status 2 from all the CD-RWs too.

Not sure if it has anything to do with not blanking or
erasing the new CD-RWs first or not adding fixate to the
burncd command, but planning to always now just burn and
thoroughly test ISOs for even one file, and only desperately
seeking to first recover this data any which way.

Thank you very much for any help here,

This question has been asked yesterday.

Try using shutdown -p now instead of -h and you system should turn his
power off automatically.

DAny

Also try with the command halt, altough in this case the system does
not power off.

Need some advice for a mail setup...

2003-12-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello everyone and Happy Holidays.

I was hoping to get some suggestions and advice here for a particular setup
im designing.

Here is what I want to do.

I am going to use FreeBSD 4.9 as our Mail server. It will be running
Postfix, courier-IMAP and a few other goodies. I also want to run webmail
on this as well.

My main question is the actual design for this.
For instance, right now, our mail server for our company is in the private
part of our network, and is only accessible to my LAN and the localhost.
(NOTE: I have a mail gateway setup that checks all incoming email first,
then passes it to the mail server)
It has been working great so far.

The trick is, how do I implement webmail with this particular setup? I do
not want to open up a firewall rule and allow webmail access directly to my
mail server that is on the private network.

Thus, i've thought of two things, but im sure there are more options:

1) Setup and configure the mail server accordingly, and place it on our DMZ.
2) Setup webmail on the Mail gateway and have it access the internal mail
server so users can view and send email.

But I was hoping to get some further advice and recommendations here.

I really do appreciate everyones help and insigt here.

THanks

Jason

Transparent filtering and ipfilter

I'm interested in configuring Filtering Bridges (as described in the Alex

I'd like to know:

 - Filtering bridges is supported with ipfilter?
 - ipfilter is more portable, but what are its limits with bridges?
 - What about adv/disav of ipfilter vs ipfw?

Postfix and FreeBSD question

2003-12-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello everyone.

I am in the process of setting up a Mail server that will be running
FreeBSD 4.9 and postfix.

My question is that, by default, FreeBSD has sendmail up and running. I
seem to vaguely remember that there were a few extra steps that were needed
to remove and install postfix correctly.

I quickly read a README_FILE for postfix, but it was not really clear.
Thus, I was hoping to ask some questions here and get some additional
feedback about this particular setup.

I appreciate the help.

Jason

P.S. I am planning to install postfix through ports. :)

Problem with mount

I'm having a problem mounting dos files from the windows drive. I've tried every kind
of mount command (mount_msdos, mount, etc) and every kind of option or options. I
even included /mnt in the command. Nothing works. I am not using anything in the
fstab file for this mount. 5 years ago, it was working perfectly on my computer. My
only mistake, I did not write it down in my FreeBSD note files.

The file I'm trying to mount is ad0s1 (windows 98). FreeBSD is mounted on ad0s2.
I have read all the MOUNT man pages. Maybe a little too complex for me. Please tell
me the one line command.

Sendmail Problem Stable 4.0

2003-11-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dear All

I have a FreeBSD 4.0 stable box with Sendmail, ipfilter and apache working on it.
I am changing my setup here to use the box principally as a firewall and pass or relay
mail through it to an SMTP server behind the firewall.
The SMTP mails are rejected.
The SMTP gets thru when the firewall box is removed from in between.
I have created and edited sendmail.cw to include the domains I want relayed.
I have edited the NAT config file:

map ed0 192.168.0.0/24 - 0.0.0.0/32 portmap tcp/udp 4:65000
map ed0 192.168.0.0/24 - 0.0.0.0/32
#DH added for mail 2003-11-16
rdr ed0 192.168.0.0/24 port 25 - 192.168.0.30 port 25
#DH added for WWW server 2003-11-16
#rdr ed0 192.168.0.0/24 port 80 - 192.168.0.30 port 80

The smtp server is on 192.168.0.30.
The internet side is 192.168.1.x

I think something else needs to be done to persuade sendmail to relay the e-mails, but
what?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
David Hingston

Marty,

to switch between screens (there are eight pre-configured
virtual screens on FreeBSD,named /dev/stty0 to /dev/stty7,
stty0 being also the console output for system messages),
you use the key combination Alt-Ctrl-F1 to Alt-Ctrl-F8,
or Ctrl-F1 to Ctrl-F8 (the latter ones do not work if you want
to switch to screen 0-8 while you are in your desktop
environment or window manager).
If you started X-window,by using a window manager
or a desktop environment, normally it uses virtual screen
#10 (you can change the virtual screens in the /etc/ttys file).
So remember that in case you switch to any of the
virtual screens 0 to 7,if you want to resume your
X session (your window manager or desktop environment),
you have to press Alt-F10.

Best regards

Bruno

Re: how to map pfkeys to screen -r cmds Errata corrige

2003-11-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On my previous reply message, the line
...If you started X-window,by using a window manager
or a desktop environment, normally it uses virtual screen
#10...
reads
...If you started X-window,by using a window manager
or a desktop environment, normally it uses virtual screen
#9
The 1st virtual screen is stty0,so the 10th is stty9,
the default one allocated to X sessions.
That's why you will use Ctrl-F10 while on another screen
to resume X session's screen (10th:stty9).

screens. How hard is this effect to set up, either with or w/o screens?
Also I'm ssh'ing into my session in case that matters.

Marty,

to switch between screens (there are eight pre-configured
virtual screens on FreeBSD,named /dev/stty0 to /dev/stty7,
stty0 being also the console output for system messages),
you use the key combination Alt-Ctrl-F1 to Alt-Ctrl-F8,
or Ctrl-F1 to Ctrl-F8 (the latter ones do not work if you want
to switch to screen 0-8 while you are in your desktop
environment or window manager).

Bruno

xinit: xf86OpenConsole: Server must be running with root permissions

2003-11-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have problems with my startx script, see my other email
when I invoke startx, it seems to 'freeze' for a minute or so,then starts.
Before fixing the startx issue (I think startx has been overwritten
by the fluxconf-XFree86-libraries-4.3.0 installation),
I tested xinit after setting the root setuid bit of the X server
(which on my machine points to XF86_SVGA).According to the
xinit error,I should be using Xwrapper to start the server or xdm.
We strongly advise against making the server SUID root!.
So,with the setuid bit set, xinit works, but the elegant solution
would be to use Xwrapper. How can I use Xwrapper ?
Does it accept a server name to execute ?

When you say 'runlevel 5' do you mean the kernel securelevels
(i remember runlevels used as boot levels in linux) ?

Thank you for help
Bruno

You should be starting X via the 'startx' command if you're not using
runlevel 5/[xgk]dm. Try that and see if the same problem persists.

Scott,

You should be starting X via the 'startx' command if you're not using
runlevel 5/[xgk]dm. Try that and see if the same problem persists.

dumping the contents of a hard-drive

2003-10-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi. I have a FreeBSD 5.1 box that has 2 hard drives. They are both
Seagate ST380011A (Capacity: 78.18 GB). Currently I am only utilizing
one hard drive and Iam planning to use the other one as a back-up.

Which utility can I use to dump all the contents of the my first drive
to the second drive?

Thank you very much in advance.

Process priority

2003-10-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Is there some way ho to assign priority (cpu time) for each process ?
I'm using Samba server for PDF printing and in case of big printouts it
could eat whole cpu time for few seconds, so i'd like to control it
and give to this process lower priority.

Thanks

can I install a port with a different (previous) version ?

2003-10-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

I periodically update the port collection. However, sometimes may
happen that I need to install a different (previous) version of
a port, for example when the current version fails to build.
(This happened recently with the latest version of wine,a windows
emulator).
How can achieve this ?

Thank you
Bruno

vinum concatenated raid setup problems

2003-10-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello all,
I have been trying without success to implement a simple vinum
concatenated RAID system made up of 2 IDE drives. The boot drive is
located on another physical drive and is not part of the RAID.

The problems:
1 - I am able to build the RAID, create a filesystem, and mount to a
directory in the tree. But I am not able to figure out how to add an
entry to my /etc/fstab file so that it is automatically mounted on
reboot. I have looked in the handbook and all it says is to add the
proper entries. I simple do not know what entry to add.

2 - On reboot, the vinum config is erased. (or at least thats what it
looks like...see dmesg output for info) It is my understanding that on
reboot, vinum reads it's configuration from each vinum drive. Since I
was able to create and mount the RAID, I assume that the configuration
would still be there on reboot, even thought it is not being mounted
with fstab (see problem 1). I have tried this on several systems and
have yet to be successful in having a vinum config survive reboot. I
have re-read and re-read the vinum section in the handbook and have
looked elsewhere but have had no luck :(

Relevent Info:
I have not made any changes to system or vinum sources. The system is a
generic 5.1 installed from FTP today.

i am running freebsd 4.6.2. i have 2 nic cards on the machine, one
which is the external interface and connects to a router which
connects
to dsl. the other is internal interface for our subnet. i have
enabled natd on the machine, but still cannot get packets out when on
the subnet. i can ssh to the external interface, but can't ssh to a

natd is running and checked the firewall rules to make sure the natd
divert rule is there. is there something else i need to configure?

I upgraded from CVSup: did I get a -stable branch ?

2003-10-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

just a question for a doubt I have:I updated the src tree via cvsup using
the file included below.According to some BSD literature (not found in the handbook),
by using the 'RELENG_4' tag in the supfile, I will get the source tree for the latest
-STABLE branch, and that is what I wanted.I CVSuped, the I recompiled the source tree
and the kernel, according to the FreeBSD Handbook instructions.
All went OK.This is the output from the 'uname -a' command after the process:

FreeBSD ciao.singles.it 4.9-RC FreeBSD 4.9-RC #0: Wed Oct 15 00:12:26 CEST 2003
root@:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/CURRENT_WINE i386

I have two questions:
1)looking at the output of 'uname', is this a STABLE version of FreeBSD (as I would
expect) ?
2)if I wanted, for example, 4.5 stable, or instead 4.3 stable, which options should I
put in the supfile ?

Thank you very much.
Bruno

Re: cvsupdate only bge driver

2003-10-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I understand what you are saying Mike,

But here is the issue:

I built a 5.1-RELEASE box and cvsuped it to -p10. After reboot I am getting
a flood of bge0 : gigabit link up messages. I am on version 1.41 of the
driver ... the latest cvs submission was 1.55. A newsgroup posting
suggested that I need the latest code to make this issue go away.

I do not want to go to -CURRENT because this will be a production box.

So what am I supposed to do ?

Help appreciated :),

Unless you really know what you are doing (in that case you would not need
to ask this question) it is HIGHLY recommended NOT to do this. The bge
driver in its latest form could depend on other parts of the kernel that
would also need to be updated. You really should cvsup everything, not
parts.

Booting without keyboard.

2003-10-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

I have recently installed FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE-p10 on a Intel SE7501WV2 board. I am
using a PS2 keyboard without mouse. It works fine. However, when i boot without the
keyboard plugged into the system, it is not able to accept the keyboard when i plug in
later.

Is there a way to turn the keyboard always 'on' so that i can get it to work whenever
i plug it in after the system is up and running.

Appreciate your advise. Thank You.

After succeeding configuring my ppp, I would need

the future be compatible with errors like the one described here
executing ping ?

ipfw show is telling you that you have one firewall rule which denys
everything from everything-- hence when you ping anything you get the
error. You should add to /etc/rc.conf

firewall_enable=YES # Set to YES to enable firewall functionality
firewall_script=/etc/rc.firewall # Which script to run to set up the firewall
firewall_type=OPEN# Firewall type (see /etc/rc.firewall)
firewall_quiet=NO # Set to YES to suppress rule display
firewall_logging=YES # Set to YES to enable events logging

as you have it defined in your kernel.
then do an 'ipfw show' and compare the output.

'kldstat' output:
Id Refs AddressSize Name
  14 0xc010 2cac40 kernel
  21 0xc0e91000 4000 logo_saver.ko
  32 0xc0e96000 11000linux.ko
  41 0xc0ebb000 2000 rtc.ko

this tells you that you have as kernel modules, linux, screensaver and rtc
loaded and not statically compiled into your kernel.

creating a package

2003-10-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all,
I want to distribute my software as a FreeBSD package. I have been through
the porters handbook, but it soes not give comprehensive info about how to
build packages.

Is there a good doc on how to do that. Also what is the difference between
.tbz and .tgz packages. Are they compatible ?

Thanks for any pointers,

Compiling doscmd

2003-09-11 Thread David Bonthron ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Hello all.
I am trying to set up doscmd, following the man and Marc Fonvieille's
article (http://soupnazi.org/freebsdzine/200103/doscmd.php). As X11
support is not compiled into doscmd in the 4.8-RELEASE system I am using,
I installed the usr/src/usr.bin sources. Then:

# cd /usr/src/usr.bin/doscmd
# setenv X11BASE /usr/X11R6
# make
Warning: Object directory not changed from original
/usr/src/usr.bin/doscmd
uudecode /usr/src/usr.bin/doscmd/cp437-8x8.pcf.gz.uu
uudecode /usr/src/usr.bin/doscmd/cp437-8x14.pcf.gz.uu
uudecode /usr/src/usr.bin/doscmd/cp437-8x16.pcf.gz.uu
make: don't know how to make
/usr/src/usr.bin/doscmd/../../share/syscons/fonts/cp437-8x8.fnt. Stop

Not a big surprise, because man doscmd says:

If doscmd emits the message X11 support not compiled in when supplied the
-x switch, this support can be added by defining an environment variable
X11BASE which points to the installed X Window System (normally
/usr/X11R6) and then typing make install in the source directory (nor-
mally /usr/src/usr.bin/doscmd). For this to work, the X programmer's kit
must have been installed.

Can anyone tell me what exactly X programmer's kit? refers to? Is the
dependency on one particular library or package or do I have to resort to
installing the entire X development distribution? (I know the latter
course of action works, at least from one previous effort on a 5.1
machine, but I don't really want to install all this stuff just for the
sake of doscmd, do I ?)

Can't shed much light on this by Googling and I am afraid I am pretty
clueless when it comes to rooting through Makefiles.

Thanks in advance for your help.

user-ppp faster then pppd ?

2003-09-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi
I recently tried to connect to the Internet using kernel ppp (pppd) instead
off user ppp. I noticed that the connection was about 0.5 KB slower whith

ppp.conf files.
What could be the reason for the different throughputs?

user-ppp faster then pppd ?

2003-09-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The difference is too small to be meaningful.
when you have 56k modem and ~4.5KB throughput 0.5KB can make a big difference

The change means that the second connection traveled over wires that were slightly noisier, or
slightly busier, or one of a hundred other possibilities. The odds that
there is a difference in connection speeds caused by a difference between
ppp and pppd lie somewhere between zero and null.
I tried it several times and got the same results, therefore it must be
caused by the diffrence between ppp and pppd.

From the original install I've made these modifs:

if_ef_load=YES
nwfs_load=YES
/etc/rc.conf

UDP Socket Options

2003-09-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
FreeBSD ought to add per-socket socket options to
allow a programmer to turn on and off the don't
fragment bit for UDP and the UDP checksum, on a per
socket basis.

This, at least I would think, would be very easy for
someone knowledgable in the networking implementation
to implement.

Thank you for you attention to this suggestion.

Hi!

1) Can I put any make option into make.conf that can be applied
to ports (like inmake WITH_CALENDAR=yes install clean)
or is this restricted to system ressources?
2) If yes - would this be advisable? - Or is there a big chance

3) Is make.conf also applied to gmake (used by many ports)?

Thanks,

Setting up a NAT Router that will route between 3 networks

2003-07-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I was wondering how to modify the appropriate files to setup a FreeBSD
computer to act as a NAT Router, that would do the following:

One NIC card is connected to a private network, with an IP address of
192.168.0.50. This will act as the gateway to all the computers in the
technology center, to connect to the internet (Nic Card 2, Provided by Cox)
and to the SDSU connection (Nic Card 3).

We need the NAT Router to act as follows:

1) When computers of the private network access the general internet, we
need the NAT to translate to the Cox.Net IP, except for all addresses
beginning with 130.191.X.X or 146.244.X.X, or all traffic on port 1214
(KaZaa), which we need to go the SDSU Connection.

2) When the IP Address the data is going to begins with 146.244.X.X or
130.191.X.X, or any IP address using port 1214, we need the data to route
through the SDSU IP Address.

NIC Card Info:

Nic Card 1 (Private Network):

IP: 192.168.0.1

RE: I want using FreeBSD, but...

2003-07-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am a Christian too. I go to church in the DFW area, and have friends in
the Internet business that are also Christians using FreeBSD for their web
servers, mail servers, etc. Nothing in the Bible says you cannot use
FreeBSD. I use it for a web server and firewall, and I never see the Daemon
image. Do you plan to look at the little Daemon logo every time you use
your computer?

God gave you a brain to reason and think with, and to acquire knowledge
with. These types of statements are based on pure ignorance and potentially
give Christians a bad name. (As seen in previous responses)

The only caveat I can think of is in 1st Corinthians 10:31-33 where it says
Do not cause anyone to stumble... Again, I do not display the little
Daemon logo anywhere, so I think I'm OK.

So in the future, I hope any Christian that wishes to use a far superior OS
for their server / workstation needs, will consider FreeBSD and get a
glimpse of this email. If questions remain, pray about your issue.

Any responses, flames, etc can be sent to me directly, please do not
clutter this list with topic any longer.

Thanks,
Ron Clark

how to check for bad blocks on IDE

2003-07-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all,

Is there a way in freebsd to check for bad blocks. Linux can do this via a
-c flag to mkfs; but newfs for FreeBSD does not seem to have this
functionality.

The issue is that I have a IDE disk that I suspect to be bad )but there
have been no ATA resets or logged errors so far). I either need to do a bad
block check while creating a filesystem or some other diagnostic tool that
can do a low level check on the disk.

Thanks,
-ansh

Changed a filesystem's name -- now system hangs on reboot (help)

2003-07-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Any help appreciated... I feel like I've painted myself into a corner.

The problem: system drops into /bin/sh on reboot without going through a
full reboot because it can't find a filesystem (/storage) that it's looking
for. I can't get into /etc/fstab to comment out the offending line because
I can't get booted.

This is as far as the boot gets:

# mount: /storage: No such file or directory
# Mounting /etc/fstab filesystems failed, startup aborted
# Enter full pathname of shell or RETURN for /bin/sh:

Background: I turned /storage into /var/ftp/many_more_files by unmounting
it and renaming it and remounting it. Everything worked fine until I needed
to do a reboot following a physical move of the box.

I've looked through the handbook and tried (unsuccessfully) to reboot into
single-user mode or otherwise get to a place where I can either comment out
the line in fstab or skip the check -- no luck.

Any ideas much appreciated.

G.

Re: running fsck on root filesystem

2003-07-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi Bill,

Thanks for a good reply. Please see my replies inline.

I am using pxeboot so far. What is happening is that when I put
installFixitHoloShell in the install.cfg then sysinstall throws me to
the
shell that is VERY barebones. I can't run even a 'ls'. In this case how do

A lot you don't say here. One thing is _why_ you want to do this. Another
is what you want to do. Your description is pretty vague.

---* Sorry I erred on the side of being laconic. Here is the situation: I
have a file in /usr/something/file. Whenever I try to cp it to any other

dies

At this point the machine stops responding to any console or network
connections. After a while it spews ethernet flow control frames,
indicating that the interrupts from the NIC to the kernel are not being
serviced.

I did a memory check on the box and it looks ok. So now I suspected the
disk...and was looking for a good way to test it.

fsck is always run on the root filesystem at boot time, in preen mode.
If
you're having some sort of filesystem errors, setting fsck_y_enable=YES in
/etc/rc.conf will cause the startup scripts to automatically run 'fsck -y'
if
fsck fails in preen mode.

---* This is a good suggestion. I need to run it on the /usr slice though.

If you want to change this behaviour, you _could_ edit /etc/rc to change
the
default handling.

From any shell, you should be able to mount filesystems readonly. When
mounted readonly, you can safely run fsck. Use 'mount -r /mountpoint'.
Many
of your commands are not on the root filesystem, so you may need to mount
(for example) /usr before you can execute certain commands.

---* Problem: here is the fstab:
# DeviceMountpoint FStype Options Dump
Pass#
/dev/ad0s1a / ufs rw 1 1
/dev/ad0s1f /tmpufs rw 2 2
/dev/ad0s1g /usrufs rw 2 2
...

When I get to the shell (via sysinstall), I do

# fsck /dev/ad0s1g
Can't stat /dev/ad0s1g: No such file or directory
Can't stat /dev/ad0s1g: No such file or directory

Why can I not see these disks? Is the device path something different. I
guees the solaris equivalent of device to fsck.

So there ...a more comprehensive summary :).

I will be thankful for any help/suggestions.

Complete system restore software for FreeBSD?

2003-06-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have used the Mondo Rescue backup and restore system before with my Linux machines
with great success. What Mondo allows one to do is a complete system backup and
restore from a bootable CD, meaning a system can survive a harddrive failure without a
whole lot of fiddling around in reconfiguring software and such. What I'm wondering
is, is there similar software available for FreeBSD (preferably free)?

For reference, more info on Mondo Rescue can be found here:

you should try 'cdrdao'

a simple command line could look like:

cdrdao write --device 0,0,0 --speed 12 toc-file.cue

the disadvantage: it works only for SCSI devices.

i think ti should also be possible to burn the bin-file directly with
'cdrecord' or 'burncd' if you now wich mode the file must be burned. you
can find the required mode in the cue-file.
i don't know if it really works, because i use 'cdrdao'

wi0 problem with cardbus

2003-03-05 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hi,

fist something about my sytem:

Vendor: Fujitsu Siemens
Model: Lifebook B2130
CPU: Intel Celeron 400MHz mobile
Chipset: Intel 443MX
RAM: 192M (64M builtin, 128M additional)
HD: 20GB
Network: Intel EtherExpress 100
Modem: Lucent LT Winmodem 56k
PCMCIA: RL5C475 CardBus
OS: FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE-p4

the problem:

i have two wireless nic's. one lucent-orinoco and one avaya. both
cards should be supported by the wi driver. but if i insert these cards, i
only get wi0 init failed (three times) and wi0 mac read failed (three
times). here is a short excerpt of the logs:
---
wi0: timeout in wi_cmd 0x; event status 0x8000
wi0: init failed
wi0: init failed
wi0: init failed
wi0: timeout in wi_cmd 0x0021; event status 0x8000
wi0: timeout in wi_cmd 0x0021; event status 0x8000
wi0: mac read failed 5
wi0: mac read failed 5
wi0: mac read failed 5
device_probe_and_attach: wi0 attach failed 5
---
i searched with google but the only thing i found was the information,
that init failed means, that the initialization of the card was not
succesful. also i tried the debug sysctl switches, but it gives no
information about this problem.
i tried a non wireless nic with the same kernel and it works without
problems. card was found and initialized without any errors.

next i tried the wireless cards on a FreeBSD-4.7 system, and the init
process there was succesful.

now i've recompiled my kernel with an OLDCARD config style.

and surprise, the cards are working, without problems.
so i searched the docs, and the source, but there i found nothing about
problems with the wi driver and NEWCARD.

can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this problem, because i
need the 32-bit cardbus support for other cards.

thanks in advance

5.0-RELEASE under VMWare 3 : slowdown and even hangup

2003-02-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi there people

And thanks for taking the time to read the flow of incoming
questions on this list ;-)

My question is a followup of the thread started by Michael
Ritchie a couple weeks ago
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?
fetch=2417405+2419960+/usr/local/www/db/text/2003/freebsd-
questions/20030126.freebsd-questions

I'm kinda in the same situation : XP Pro, WMWare 3.2, several
virtual machines running fine (linux,w2k), but the freebsd 5-
RELEASE is quite a pain to use in this env.

The guest OS keeps on slowing down, to the point that it's
unusable.
I'd say that after 30 minutes, it starts slowing down a lot.
The installation process is quite risky in this matter.

I launched a kernel compilation 15 hours ago. The system was
already slow and ... the compilation is not over !!

I see no process named idle (see the previous thread), but,
having launched a top in another terminal, here's what I
see :

0% user, 0% nice, 8.3% system, 91.7% interrupt !!!

Now I can't do anything on this virtual machine. Not a ctrl-C,
not even changing console.

Kris Kenna talked about a kernel option for fix this. The
problem would be related to a specific opcode emulation done
by VMWare.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just can't use 5.0
right now in this environnement.

Thanks everyone

Yvon

Re: 5.0-RELEASE under VMWare 3 : slowdown and even hangup

2003-02-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi there everyone

At 10:51 AM +0100 2/13/03, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
You will find an option called CPU_DISABLE_CMPXCHG

I read that one and didn't read (my newbie fault) that it was
so closely related to VMWare.

I realize you then have the problem of how to compile the new
kernel when it takes so long to do anything with the standard
GENERIC kernel. Perhaps it would go better if you booted up
in
single-user mode, and then compiled and installed the new
kernel.

That's a good idea, even if I'm not sure single user would
make a difference. I imagine that the same machine code is
being called when doing a make depend, make, cc stuff.

My short term method has been (all day long) to reboot the
guest os from time to time (when things get slow, but before
things get *BLOCKED*) and relaunch the build procedure.

However, this is quite difficult and cumbersome to achieve.

I, for sure, would have preferred a sysctl option if I
understand that it is far too low level for this.

In the end, compiling a new kernel on a non-VMWare host sounds
interesting but might sound bizarre when using the VMWare-do-
not-need-new-hardware-to-try-new-OS approach.

My new kernel build is not over right now and I'll probably
find it blocked tomorrow morning because of no reboot :(

Thanks for your help anyway, and sorry for the RTFM glitch ;-)

Help with IPF and IPNAT

2002-12-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Argh! I've been pulling my hair out trying to get my NAT gateway going.

I have two interfaces, one external and internal, servicing a private LAN.
From the LAN I can ping the internal interface and the external interface,
but I can't get past the ext. interface. For testing my rules are pass in
all and pass out all. From the gateway itself I can ping anywhere outside
or inside.

I have tried loading IPNAT and IPF as loadable kernel modules by adding the
following to /etc/rc.conf:

gateway_enable=YES
network_interfaces=x10 dc0 lo0
ifconfig x10...
ifconfig dc0...
ipfilter_enable=YES
ipfilter_rules=/etc/ipf.rules
ipfilter_program=/sbin/ipf
ipfilter_flags=
ipnat_enable=YES
ipnat_program=/sbin/ipnat
ipnat_flags=

Each interface is up and running. My default gateway in /etc/rc.conf is
the gateway of the external NIC.

Can anyone see anything wrong with what I am doing, or something missing?
Do I need routed installed and running? I also tried
forward_sourceroute=YES, but that didn't seem to help.

Thanks,
Adam Lofstedt

FreeBSD Install question

2002-10-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have an older laptop that doesn't have a bootable CD-ROM. The bay
either holds a CD Module or a Floppy module so I can't boot off the
floppies and install from the CD-ROM.

I have installed a small DOS partition and can access my FreeBSD CD-ROM,
is there any way to invoke the install from within DOS. (RedHat has a
batch file on the CD-ROM that allows the installer to launch, is there
anything I can use to do this for FreeBSD?)

Is it possible to boot off the floppies, switch out the Floppy module
for the CD module and then use the CD?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rich B

2002-10-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When the problem arised for the file descripters bug a while back
(iosmash), i patched my box accordingly. (freebsd 4.4-release)
Recently, the problem has re-arised and an exploit was released
(iosmash2). I was wondering if there was a patch for this available,
and if so, what do i need to do in order to patch it? Any
information would be much appreciated.

2 gateways - seperate routes for different ports?

2002-09-27 Thread Alek - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings,

I currently have 2 gateway servers that I would like to consolidate.

One is a permanent dialup with a static IP - this maintains DNS, routes my
SMTP namespace and is relatively secured with IPFW.
The other is a cable connection with a dynamic IP running NAT but
unsecured because I haven’t figured out how to configure IPFW with a
dynamic IP… yet.
I want to consolidate these 2 boxes, but I would need to route port 25 and
53 traffic through the dialup connection and everything else through the
cable connection? I expect I should be able to do this with IPFW…? No?
Any ideas / solutions appreciated.

Cheers,

Alek.

Symbolic Link Creating

2002-07-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi
I am trying to work out how to symlink my log files from /var
to /usr/var (?/usrvar/log/) as var is full.to create some space.
Should I copy the logs across then make the link?
How do I actually make the link? Do I make it for each file or can I do
this for the whole directory? Both Link and symlink do not seem to work,
although I can find no instructions/examples and the man seems light on
detail.
This is in FreeBSD Stable 4.0.
With many thanks in advance.
