Hi Siraj, the first place to start looking is undoubtedly the CD itself. First, checksum your .iso image. If this passes, burn to a new CD and try again. Cheaper CD-R cds tend to have a lot of quality issues. James On Wed, 2007-10-03 at 17:41 +0100, Siraj Shaikh wrote: > I am new to FreeBSD, and am trying to install it. Some configuration might be required after the packages are there (e.g. making a file ~/.xinitrc with the line "startkde"). If you're in a hurry, here are the alternate steps: 1) Install a base system without packages, configure it to your liking 2) Execute "pkg_add -r xorg" 3) Execute "pkg_add -r kde3" Don't mix and match the two approaches if you don't know what you're doing, but the end result should be approximately the same. Re: FreeBSD 6.2 Installation Problems
You have to select them individually that is way you are getting output you saw. That is not the way "properly" install FreeBSD. Do the installation by selecting just a base system with the source but WITHOUT X. Decline port tree and any packages except cvsup-without gui Then cvsup system and rebuild the word using the stable branch of 6.2 or whatever you want to run 7.0 current. Then portsnap port tree. Only then you should start installing packages using ports to compile them not binaries. The first one to be install should be XOrg 7.2 then window manager of a Desktop environment of your choice and then you need to configure everything. It will take you at least couple hours to do all of above and see any GUI let alone KDE or Gnome. For that it will take you probably two days depends on the speed of the internet and you hardware. If previous advices sounds too complicated or even idiotic maybe you should play with PC-BSD for a week or so to get some basic ideas about philosophy of FreeBSD before you get the real thing. Reading the Handbook would help too and is not just recommended but mandatory! PC-BSD has a graphical installer. You answer 6 questions and within 10 minutes you will have KDE GUI with Beryl as a default window manager and most common applications that you would expect on the Desktop. And you even do not need to do any configuration it is done for you. G. Yager wrote: Hello: I'm trying to install release 6.2 (i386 ) of FreeBSD from ISO disks I've downloaded from the main site. Hi, I have a HD of 40 GB with the following structure: 1° partition (20 GB) Windows 2000 (NTFS filesystem) 2° partition (20 GB) Empty (FAT32 filesystem) I want to install freebsd 5.4 on the second partition. But the problem is that when I enter on fdisk part of freebsd installation, it shows me just one crazy partition of 8 GB (type unknow) and the rest of space unused. Have Freebsd some kind of problem with NTFS filesystem ? If it haven't, how can deal with this ? OBS: I've a pentium II 233 MHZ with a 98 bios that doesn't recognize my Maxtor 40GB HD. To solve this problem I had to install a Maxtor utility that makes an overlay on bios. I used to have a linux installed on that partition and it recognized the full HD space. -- Rafael Cepêda (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Thanks Stuart for reminding me of my alternative install options. I'll try installing over serial tomorrow. I've never had to install off anything but a CD, so it will be a good learning experience for me anyway. Now to just dig out that old 486 and track down a Null modem cable. . . . Daniel, I'm still a little stumped why you were able to install 5.4 on a GX280 without any problems. Maybe there is some slight variation in the Dell systems even though they are the same model #. Who knows? Or maybe a slight difference in our BIOS configs. At least there is a workaround - if not a very convient one. -John > > I've had a nightmare trying to get 5.4 (also tried 5.3) to work on a > > Dell GX280 - which had exactly the same problem. In the end, I ended up using a serial link to get the install done and then got inetd setup so that I could troubleshoot over the network. Hello all, I'm new to FreeBSD and have just installed 4.9.2 on a machine I had here. I had originally tried to install to this machine using it's onboard graphics adapter, which (I learned) had an MPact chipset which apparently nobody in the world supports, so I moved on and pulled a card from a P133 I had sitting here. The card is a Diamond Stealth Graphics card with the Ark200pv chipset on it. So far, so good, but now I'm stuck and could really use a little guidance. Re: Installation problems
OK, I was going to try turning off DMA, but it won't. There isn't an actual setting in the CMOS setup for it. After consulting the manual it tells me to disable "PCI IDE busmaster", so I did. But DMA is still enabled so it still does the same. Should I just give up or is there anything else to do? In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Paul Brownsea (pb) writes: pb> ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting pb> ata0: resetting devices .. pb> And then it just hangs. This one is getting popular. There is at least one disk controller chipset out there which FBSD 4.X doesn't understand. If you can turn off DMA disk access in the BIOS, you may be able to install. If you really are just trying it to see, try 5.2.1. It's not officially reccomended for production use yet, but it seems perfectly OK, just remember if something acts weirdly that you shouldn't assume it reflects what 5.X will be like when it is nailed down and solid. In a few months from now when you decide it's just what you need for some real use, 5.X may be the reccomended stable version anyway, so you'll have become familair with the right thing. -- Mail me as [EMAIL PROTECTED]_O_ |< ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

port installation problems progress
I had been having some problems installing ports: they manifested as configure misreading the system type and setting up libtool so it wouldn't build shared libs. After some correspondence with a FreeBSD team member and a port maintainer, I decided to start afresh with a kernel and world reinstall. This led me to the solution. The email excerpted below mentioned almost the same error I was seeing: http://www.atm.tut.fi/list-archive/freebsd-stable/msg04153.html For the last week or so, I've been having trouble building kernels against a RELENG_4 source tree. A 'make buildkernel' from /usr/src fails as follows: perl5 /usr/src/sys/kern/vnode_if.pl -h /usr/src/sys/kern/vnode_if.src syntax error at /usr/src/sys/kern/vnode_if.pl line 135, near "{}" Execution of /usr/src/sys/kern/vnode_if.pl aborted due to compilation errors. I took the advice suggested below. http://www.atm.tut.fi/list-archive/freebsd-stable/msg04174.html I believe I have these resolved. If anybody's interested, it took a reboot, buildworld followed by an install from /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/perl, then buildkernel went fine. At Mike Tansca's suggestion, I'd tried a buildworld (against a fresh source tree), and I was getting cc errors - the reboot appears to have fixed those. My build machine is now happily running a new kernel/world. Some packages are building OK but I still see issues on some ports. Any ideas how this might have gotten into this state and how I can resolve it completely? -- Paul Beard paulbeard [at] mac.com ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Mysql4.0 Installation problems on FreeBSD
Hello, I have been running mysql3.23 on FreeBSD 4.5 server for a long time. I was having problems installing mod_php4 using portupgrade. So I decided to upgrade mysql3.23 to mysql4 using ports. I first did "make uninstall" in usr/ports/databases/mysql323-client and mysql323-server. I got message that the package was not installed completely. But when i gave "pkg_info | grep mysql" i got no results. Than, from /usr/ports/databases/mysql40-server i gave "make install" command. mysql-client installed properly but mysql-server did not. I got the following error: shared library "mysqlclient.12" is not found. Goolging for this error did not help me much.Having had no success in installation, I uninstalled mysql-client again and from /usr/ports/databases/mysql40-server i gave "make reinstall". This has worsten the situation. The installation process was going on going on and going on.. and i had to give ctrl-C to stop it. I guess it went on to some kind of loop. I am now also worried if it has effected any of my system files. I am totally lost. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Naveen. Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance Tax Center - File online. Re: php installation problems; PortUpgrade Question...
Hello, I have installed portupgrade tool on my system. I need some clarification before i use it. At present, my system has mysql3.23,Apache1.3 and no php. Earlier, My system had php4.2.2 but when i used "pkg_update php4.2.2" ; php4-4.2.2 got uninstalled and new version php4-4.3.3 was not installed because it needed upgradation of mysql. Anyways, Now I want to install php4-4.3.3.1 in my system using portupgrade without manually upgrading mysql. When i gave "pkg_info | grep php" i did not get any output since i do not have php installed on my system. So, I am not sure what should i specify after -NRr in "portupgrade -NRr ??". Will the command " portupgrade -NRr php4-4.3.3.1" work? Will this command install php4-4.3.3.1 and also upgrade all its dependencies(if necessary). I would really appreciate any help. Thanks, Naveen. Re: php installation problems; now mysql connection problems
When you chose "install php without mysql", what you really did is install PHP without mysql _support_. This is why you can't connect. Reinstall PHP *with* mysql support and you will be fine. RE: Urgent Installation problems (CD) - DON"T HOLD YOUR BREATH
I hope you have better luck than I have, Alvin. I am experiencing the same problems and received and tested the following options - all to no avail. 1) Update computer BIOS to latest version 2) Downloaded and tested ISO files from 4.6 to 4.91 from bootable CDs (all hang) 3) Purchased commercial release (5.1) and tested CD (hangs after finding boot record) 4) Purchased USB floppy drive and created floppy boot disks (hang) 5) Attempted to submit problem report via web (web interface is down) 6) Attempted to submit problem report via email to the "Bugmeister" (unacknowlaged) In the meantime, additional testing shows: 1) Installation CDs from Microsoft boot and install properly 2) Installation CD created from downloaded ISO from the Fedora Project installs properly In my situation, I believe the problem may be related to my computer being "legacy free". What that means is that it does not have the traditional IO devices that most computers have (PS/2 keyboard or mouse, serial, parallel, or floppy interface. All it has are USB ports for those functions. My guess is that the kernel included in the installation files was not built for this situation. In the meantime, since I do not have a working FreeBSD system, I can not build my own kernal. When approaching this situation, it was my desire to base my systems on a BSD kernel. Due to it's reputation of stability and (especially) compatability, I chose FreeBSD. Since that time, I have spent over $100, many hours of testing, and significant frustration to install it - to no avail. The lack of support (and even responsiveness) from the FreeBSD team after putting my money on the line to purchase the commercial release gives me grave doubts about the viability of this distribution and the legitimacy of the organization's compatability claims.. Good luck - and don't spend any money until it works! RE: Urgent Installation problems (CD)
The .iso file is an compressed file. If the CD you are trying to boot from only has a single .iso file then you did not burn the cd correctly. It should look like an regular data CD with directories, and sub-directories populated with files. If you can use FBSD to mount the CD, and use the cd [change directory] command to point to it and then ls command to see the contents, then your boot problem lies some where else than with the CD disk. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Alvin Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 6:04 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Urgent Installation problems (CD) Thank you for your time. That would probably be because the files you are looking for are not on fd0. If you want to install those files from floppy disks, you are going to need a lot more floppies. The "bin" distribution consists of 174 files of 235K each. Or 40M. I presume you meant 2GB :) >Then in the next screen I get another window >with a request message like "Do you want to try DHCP configuration at the >Interface ? Yes No ". I selected No and proceeded to the next level of the >installation process. In this next level, I get a big screen called the >"Network Configuration" window to proceed with my ftp. If I leave all of these fields empty, the >installation program prompts me with an error message like "must specify a >host name of some sort !" Then I just entered a host name for the host, >like foo.com and pressed enter to proceed all the way through the 7 fields >to the OK button. You definitely need some more entries there. Choose something that you would not find on the net for domain. I use the rather boring my.domain and the hostname can be any word you like. You must insert a valid IP in the Name Server (DNS) field. If you usually use Microsoft Windows to connect to your ISP, you should be able to see the Name Server address by using winipcfg while connected. Or you may be able to find this from your ISP's www help pages, or contact their Tech. Support as a last resort. Without a Name Server the installation won't be able to convert a name like ftp.freebsd.org into a number (62.243.72.50). And therefore will not be able to connect. It would probably help to put an entry in the interface netmask field. 255.255.255.0 should be ok. >It fails to download freebsd automatically from the freebsd ftp site like >it should. Any help will be helpful. I hope this is helpful. Good luck. John. I did what you asked me to do. This time I had a little bit of progress but still I got a differen error message. I used the windows command winipcfg command to get the DNS information. As I indicated in my previous mail there are 6 fields in the windows in the "Network Configuration" window where these 6 fields are host, domain, ipv4 gateway, name server, IPv4 address netmask : , extra option to ifconfig. The hostname I typed as :- foo The domain name as you indicated in your mail that you used my.domain I also used my.domain The netmask automatically chaged to :- 255.255.255.0 The name server address or the DNS address after checking using winipcfg was: 202.188.0.133 but when I use the arp command it gives me a different address instead. It gives me 202.188.0.132 instead. The ipv4 gateway information is blank with no information on this. The IPv4 information is also left blank with no information and the extra option to ifconfig is also left blank with no information. I chose to download using FTP. after keying in all the information like the login name, password and the telephone number for my ISP, I tried connecting, I got an error message like " Cannot resolve hostname 'ftp.freebsd.org' ! Are you sure that your name se rver, gateway and network interface are correctly configured ?" then I pressed enter after this I got another message like "Killing previous PPP process 34". Can anyone help regarding this problem. After putting in the > disk and pressing enter I receive a warning or error message like "Error mounting > floppy fd0 (/dev/fd0) on /dist: Invalid argument". Floppy disks are not the most reliable of media. It's quite possible you've got a bad disk there. Try again with a different disk, preferably a brand new never used before one. When you say using the "floppy method" do you mean you're just using the floppies to boot from, and that you're going to download the bulk of the distribution by other means, or that you're really going to use a whole stack of floppies to copy in the entire distribution onto your system? If it's the latter, then I admire your dedication, but question your thinking. You will be sorely tried by that process. > When I try to install it via FTP, at the end of the installation procedure > I receive a message like "Couldn't open FTP connection to ftp.freebsd.org: undefined > error : 0" Can someone please help me troubleshoot this problems which I had been > facing with the installation of FreeBSD into my personal computer. Hmmm... You don't exactly give us much detail to work on here. Some sort of indication of exactly what version of FreeBSD you're trying to install and a description of your hardware with as much detail as you can find: ideally something like this: 1 AMD Athlon +1600 CPU ASUS A7V266 Motherboard 512Mb PC2100 Ram Tekram DC-390U3W SCSI controller IBM 07N3200 U160 HDD (36Gb) Samsung SC1200TX NIC ELSA External 56k Fun Modem but do the best you can if you don't know that sort of detail. The output of 'dmesg' or 'pciconf -l -v' can help clarify things if necessary. How, exactly, are you trying to make a connection to the net in order to get FTP access to the FreeBSD servers? For an FTP install you've either got to connect by a LAN which has routes out to the internet --- for instance, if you have an ADSL router or another machine with a modem and dial-up capability which you can route traffic through --- or you have to have a directly attached modem on your system. I suspect that this isn't applicable to your situation, but just to cover all bases: If you're connecting via a local network, then skip over all of the instructions about configuring PPP, and go directly to the screens for setting up an ethernet card. It works nicely by DHCP if that's available in your environment, otherwise, you'll have to obtain an IP number, the local netmask and the IP numbers of your local DNS servers and of the default gateway to the internet. Now, if I guess correctly, you're trying to use a 56k dialup via an analog modem. First question is: what sort of modem are you using? If it's an external modem that plugs into one of the serial ports or one of the older sorts of internal modem which appear to the system like another serial port --- ie. one with a real UART --- then you're all set to go. If it's an external device that plugs into a USB port, then I can't really say if it's going to work or not. If it's an internal "winmodem" type as supplied with most commodity PCs purchased in the last few years, then you are out of luck as far as *installing* FreeBSD that way. Once you have FreeBSD installed you may be able to install the comms/ltmdm port which provides drivers for a number of devices based on the Lucent LT chipset, but you'ld have to beg, borrow or steal an alternative modem to do the installation first. Can you boot into another operating system to verify that the modem functions correctly? Having established that you have a working and compatible modem, then you need some sort of dial-up account at an ISP. It's a kind of dumb thing to fall over on, but it happens: double check that you're using the correct account name and password for the ISP. You should be able to hit 'Alt F2' from the main sysinstall screen to see some much more detailed debugging output: check that for clues as to why you can't get a connection. Thanks, are you trying to do the ftp install using a modem connection and if so, what type of modem do you have? If you have a winmodem you maybe able to get it working with FreeBSD once you have FreeBSD installed but you cannot install using it, see http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/hardware.html#SUPPORT-WINMODEM I admit I am guessing at the cause of your problem with the installation and if the above is not relevant hopefully someone more expert than I am will follow up pointing this out and a way to work out the cause of the problem you are having. Please note that mail sent to this list should be sent as plain text, not as html. I have never used hotmail but I believe you can change the settings so that the e-mails you send are not sent as html. Installation problems
Hello, sorry to disturb you with a quite stupid question. What can couse a page fault during a cd or floppy installation, with almost all hardware removed, usb and apm disabled, the RAM's seem to be ok and CPU doesn't overheat at all? Nothing unusual occurs when running windows on that box. Help! :) thanks in advance S. Re: Installation Problems
I had thought this was in the early adopters guide (you did read that right?), but doesn't 5.0 take more memory to install than 4.7 did? I don't know if that would cause your problem or not, but it seems possible. Try installing 4.7, that should work fine, if not, let us know what problem you have. Installation Problems
Hi. I'm trying to install release 5.0 on an i386 system with a P100 processor with native windows 95 on the hard disk. I have 16mb ram and a 1.2GB IDE Wester Digital Caviar. Because the computer does not support CD booting and I have not been able to find a way to change boot order in the bios, I created boot disks as described in the install.txt. The kernel and the mfsroot load fine, but when it boots the kernel it freezes on the line "Mounting root from ufs:dev/md0/stand/sysinstall running as init on vty0." It is detecting my cd-rom drive, which is a secondary slave. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
