Re: [Freeciv-Dev] [patch #2155] Base the Holy See nation on the Papal States

2015-10-07 Thread Daniel Markstedt
Here's a description of the flag of the Vatican City, from the website of
the Vatican government.
The flag of Vatican City State is made up of two fields, vertically divided
in half: the yellow half flies alongside the flagpole, while the white half
bears the papal tiara and crossed keys.

Re: [Freeciv-Dev] [patch #2155] Base the Holy See nation on the Papal States

2015-10-07 Thread Daniel Markstedt
Hello Charles,

The idea with the flags is that the modern Vatican nation will use the modern
flag, while the pre 1808 flag will be used by the Papal States nation.

When a nation runs out of its own city names, it will start picking cities from
other nations that are listed as civil war nations. So the concept with the
Vatican nation is that the first city will always be the Vatican City (in
Latin) after which it will start picking from the Papal States, Roman etc
lists.

Hope this makes sense to you.

Thanks
Daniel

Hello Pope Adrianus. Thanks for your feedback.
Instead of simply reversing the patch, let me look into adding a separate
'modern' Vatican City nation to the game.

[Freeciv-Dev] [patch #3759] Make freesounds the default soundset

2013-02-27 Thread Daniel Markstedt
Follow-up Comment #1, patch #3759 (project freeciv):

Gavin said this when he released the package a few years back:

I've created a soundset for Freeciv based on samples from
http://freesound.org, which licences its samples with a Creative Commons
Sampling Plus 1.0 License.

Here's a link to the license text:

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/legalcode

Just skimming through the first few paragraphs, it looks like the license has
a pretty strict noncommercial clause, so while INAL I'd suggest GPL'ing is out
of the question...

Follow-up Comment #2, patch #3759 (project freeciv):

I went back to the source and found out that Gavin's statement wasn't entirely
accurate, or at least not accurate anymore.

The individual URLs to each audio file in freesounds.AUTHORS are are broken
(presumably due to a website redesign) but I could find most of the files I
tried by searching the site; a selection follows together with the license
statement:

RAH_Flapping_Fabric_2.flac (by narfnarfsillywilly)

Both Marko's and Rafał's patches avoid the error (trunk).

Only Marko's patch apply cleanly to S2_4, and I confirmed that it avoids the
error, and that it is possible to launch the server/client and play a turn.

On trunk, however, compilation fails further down so I couldn't do any
playtesting. This is probably unrelated, however. The error in this case is:

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #20078] May I help to update nations translation of far east?

Follow-up Comment #1, bug #20078 (project freeciv):

Hi Xiaowei,

Actually, there is a condition for that rule: We allow Latin letters, only, in
nation rulesets.

We are aware that it would look better to have Chinese(etc.) cities/leaders
appear in Chinese characters when in a Chinese locale. But there are various
practical and technical issues that blocks this. Most recently discussed about
a year ago:

See https://mail.gna.org/public/freeciv-i18n/2011-08/msg00017.html and the
half a dozen or so follow-ups.

Please read also the doc/README.nations file in the Freeciv package. It is

Update of bug #18993 (project freeciv):

Severity: 3 - Normal = 2 - Minor
  Status:None = Confirmed
 Assigned to:None = mixcoatl

Follow-up Comment #3:

This is an old leftover from back when naming of the flag files/definitions
wasn't as consistent.

Jos, I'll leave it up to you whether you want to rename the flag files or not.

[Freeciv-Dev] [patch #3255] Cyrenaican nation

2012-04-15 Thread Daniel Markstedt
Follow-up Comment #1, patch #3255 (project freeciv):

One comment: I think 'Gaddafi' is the standard way to write the former Libyan
leader's name in an English context. My understanding is that this is also a
close approximation of the pronunciation in his native Libyan Arabic dialect,
while 'Qadhafi' is a transliteration closer to written Modern Standard Arabic.

[Freeciv-Dev] [patch #3069] African-American nation

2012-02-04 Thread Daniel Markstedt
Follow-up Comment #3, patch #3069 (project freeciv):

I read an interested article recently in the London Review of Books[1] about
the political debate around the time of the abolition of slavery, in
particular during the Lincoln presidency. The topic was 'what to do' with
blacks after abolition. The political (white) elite favored various
apartheid-style schemes to establish an African American independent nation to
where the black population was to be forcibly removed after abolition. The
federal government had already secured, or was working on securing, territory
in the Caribbean (Ile à Vache, off the coast of Haiti) or Latin America
(parts of Panama). Some even suggested turning Florida into a black-only
state.

This concept apparently had limited appeal to black leaders. The vast majority
of them vehemently opposed such plans. They wished to stay in the United
States and be allowed to settle wherever they wanted.

So I guess what I wanted to get to with this little digression is that the
concept of an African American nation (independent from the United States) in
a game such as Freeciv might be controversial among black Americans
themselves.

Just my $0.1 :)

[Freeciv-Dev] [patch #3075] German-speaking Belgian nation

2011-12-18 Thread Daniel Markstedt

Follow-up Comment #1, patch #3075 (project freeciv):

Please excuse my ignorance of mainland European political history, but are
German-speaking Belgians really a proper nation as per Freeciv convention? My
impression is that they're neither been an independent nation in the past, nor
are striving to become one outside the framework of either the Belgian or
German states.

And if you really go ahead and add them to the game, may I suggest a name
such as German-Belgians instead? Perhaps not as accurate, but a little bit
less of a mouthful for our players. :)

Hi Peter,

As a matter of fact, this Flattr account was registered for a fork of
the Freeciv project called Freeciv.net. Freeciv.net was shut down
earlier this year by its founder Andreas Røsdal (cc'ed).

Andreas, do you think it's a good idea to re-assign this Flattr
account to the Freeciv project?

Regards,

Daniel

The flag should be the same as the Scottish flag, the St Andrews cross.

[Freeciv-Dev] [task #7257] Find a new home for the wiki

2011-07-10 Thread Daniel Markstedt

Follow-up Comment #4, task #7257 (project freeciv):

It's been a week now and Wikia still haven't responded to the request for a
database dump. :(

Anyhow, in the meantime I tried importing two random articles which was -
although the first try resulted in an obscure error - successful with the full
revision history retained. It should be noted though that the SF instance of
MediaWiki doesn't have all of the features/extensions of Wikia, support for
the timeline tag f.e.

It should be mentioned that there's one significant drawback of having the
wiki on SF: they put a massive ad banner at the top of the page pushing all
contents far down. First I thought it was possible to somehow hide or move it
somewhere else through some configuration option (since it's so hideously
ugly), but this does not seem to be the case. All other hosted wikis I've
found so far all display this banner. Unlike Wikia, though, SF doesn't seem to
be messing with the actual article contents which is a pro. It's still pretty
bad though.

Related to the changes to bootstrap in bug #18263?

I think this problem has existed forever. You cannot do 'make dist'
in pristine tree, but you have to compile once first so that you get
'tolua' (or to have up-to-date generated api-files without generating
 them with tolua)

Indeed, I had forgotten about this little detail. Thanks.

Tried to play around with --with-libiconv-prefix but it's not a
recognized argument for distcheck (so I guess this suggestion should
not appear when running 'make distcheck'.)

As you see it's 'configure' (run my make) that prints the error, not
'make' itself. So it's not argument to give to 'make'. Other than
that, I have no clue what might be the cause and how to fix this. I'll
try to investigate as soon as I have time (others hopefully beat me to

Unfortunately, Wikia does no longer offer regular database dump files for

once a week. I've requested one now. Let's see what happens.

For the record, SourceForge and Wikia are running different versions of

Re: [Freeciv-Dev] Music in Freeciv? - Will

2011-07-04 Thread Daniel Markstedt
Hi Will,

Thank you so much for your offer. While I personally agree completely that
music would enhance the game, at this current time Freeciv does
unfortunately not support playing contextual music tracks during gameplay.
We maintain a simple roadmap at our wiki - http://freeciv.org/wiki/Coding -
and as you can see we don't have any immediate plans to implement music.

Again, thanks for your interest in the Freeciv project.

Kind regards,

Daniel

2011/5/19 SHINING SPIRIT kidchamel...@hotmail.fr

  Hello,

I just would like to know, do you plan to add music in Freeciv?
I didn't do anything yet, but I thought it could be interesting...
You can check my music here : http://www.myspace.com/willphoenix
Of course, this is definitely not the style of music which could be used in
 Freeciv.
But at least I could try something? (ambient, relaxing easy-listening
 music?)
I think your game is simply the best alternative to Civilization and I
 think some
good music could make it even more popular.
I've found lots of people on the net who said that Freeciv is great as it
is, but it could get better with Music.
Just in case you're interested, I'm really an amateur so don't expect great
compositions like Heroes of Might and Magic IV...[image: Confused smile]

make[2]: ../../dependencies/tolua-5.1/src/bin/tolua: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** [api_gen.c] Error 1
make[1]: *** [distdir] Error 1
make: *** [distdir] Error 1

(full log attached)

Related to the changes to bootstrap in bug #18263?

Anyhow, it's getting late over here so I'll call it a day and
investigate further tomorrow.

Tried to play around with --with-libiconv-prefix but it's not a
recognized argument for distcheck (so I guess this suggestion should
not appear when running 'make distcheck'.)

OTOH, a straight './configure' on the same code does not trigger the error:

[Freeciv-Dev] [task #7246] Publish Amplio for 2.3 as stand-alone package

2011-06-22 Thread Daniel Markstedt

Update of task #7246 (project freeciv):

  Status:None = Cancelled
 Open/Closed:Open = Closed

___

Follow-up Comment #4:

Alright, if everyone are fine with the added overhead of having both amplio
and amplio2 to maintain in svn there's of course no harm in keeping both
there.

As a matter of fact, I think it might be a good idea to add more tilesets to
Gna svn if they fulfill these criteria:

-not actively maintained by the original author
-have clear authorship and licensing status
-of good quality

[Freeciv-Dev] Upcoming releases

2011-06-17 Thread Daniel Markstedt
Hi,

We're planning two Freeciv releases in the beginning of the next month.

First one is a stable bugfix release, 2.2.6, targeted for July 3rd.

Second one will be from the 2.3 branch. We haven't entirely made up
our minds whether the code is stable enough for a Release Candidate,
or whether we need another beta: 2.3.0-beta5. In any case, we aim to
get it out on July 17th.

Thanks,

Daniel

[Freeciv-Dev] [bug #18004] Japanese translation bug - science dialog in tutorial

2011-06-13 Thread Daniel Markstedt

Update of bug #18004 (project freeciv):

Status: Need Info = Ready For Test
 Planned Release: 2.3.0 = 2.2.6

___

Follow-up Comment #2:

Ok, had a look at the translation myself and the fix is completely legit.
Will commit to S2_2 soon.

However, there seems to be an underlying problem with the English strings
themselves. In the tutorial in particular, the term Science Dialog is used
frequently while in most other places it is called the Research Report.
Raised bug #18207 to address this.

The band's flag can be seen in a tiny version at http://www.choctaw.org/ -
it's essentially the French tricolor with the band seal superimposed. Drew the
svg from scratch, borrowing the color palette from the flag of Mississippi,
and a very simplified version of the seal.

For a Tswana nation you could use the flag of the Bophuthatswana Bantustan,

The tribal flag is described at
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/xa-chick.html but according to discussion
at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chickasaw_seal.svg the seal design itself
has some kind of copyright/exclusive-use clause attached to it so I chose to
draw some geometric shapes that would roughly correspond to the design of the
flag without the seal itself being recognizable.
