Hi Fred,

What you have to do is this. You go to start menu, go to battle zone, then
you go to play battle xone then you should hear the bgt message and your
done. Just press enter and the game will start after the bgt intro message.

Hi Jack,

I don't know who or what your sources are, but they are way off. Jedi
Quest is a dead project. The lead developer for LightTech up and quit
several months back, and although their website is up they are
effectively out of business. So please stop giving the list false hope
based on out of date information.

As for Super Liam 2 I've already answered that one. Liam is now
working at a real programming job, and all of his game projects are
more or less on hold until such time he has to actually work on them.
No great mystery there why we aren't seeing a lot of new games from
that corner these days. Although, he did manage to produce a new
version of Super Egg Hunt so we should all thank Liam for that upgrade
given his lack of free time these days.

As for Chillingham 2 all I can say is you have more faith in Bavisoft
than I do. As others have said it has been 7 or 8 years since they
have produced anything, and I can say from a programmer's personal
point of view that it shouldn't take that long to produce Chillingham
2. Even giving them a break on the length of time to say it is in
"early development" is a bit of a open ended statement. Are you saying
that they only just started it right now, or did they start it and
forget about it for x number of years and start up again?

You see if I started a project 7 years ago and continued working on it
for an hour or two a day I wouldn't call that "early development" at
all because the product I'd have would be very very safisticated by
now. Although, MOTA is three years old in actuallity most of that time
was spent developing a game engine for developing the future USA Games
titles, and serious development on the game itself has only been over
the last three/four months. So that's less than your 7 or 8 years of
time and I have created something a lot more safisticated than
Chillingham 2 in a lot less time. So I think Bavisoft is just blowing
smoke.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] battle zone

2011-03-27 Thread The Addictor
I have to say that this game is quite addictive. I couldn't hear the pit
sound very well, so I did modify that one sound. I yelled, "Look out!
Watch where you're steppin'!" I mixed that yell into the pit sound two
times, one at the beginning and one about five seconds later--but there are
still like ten seconds of wind after, so often I still fall into the pit
only to be told, as I plummet to my death, to watch my step.
Anyway, even with that extra bit of help I find the game rather difficult.
No, I'm not complaining--I love it! I haven't got past level 3, and I keep
dying for some unknown reason I haven't figured out get.

Two improvements I'd like to see:
1. Sometimes, items fall just as you are completing a level, and you're
stuck listening to a high-pitched shriek as you're told your stats.
Stopping all sounds would fix it.
2. An analog jumping system would be killer. It would make things a lot
harder, but it would be worth it.

Thanks, and love the game!

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts on Community Projects

2011-03-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Yeah, I've always wondered why some people are under the illusion that
some Sapi voices ship with the game. Of course, a person can, if they
wish, bundle a setup of Mike, Mary, and Sam with their installs but
they can't legally do that for anything else unless they have a
distribution right. Technically, I'm not suppose to record voice clips
of commercial Sapi voices but I currently do. I'm still debating how
to handle that sticky issue. I figure before I release MOTA 1.0 I'll
have to remove the voice clips and turn on the Sapi support in G3D
instead.

However, it is kind of funny, I don't remember which list it was on,
but this gguy ask me how to install the voice for MOTA so he could use
it with Jaws. I'm like "what? It is just a bunch of wav files I
recorded using Acapela Heather." Apparently he wasn't aware I was only
using voice samples of a Sapi voice and believed he had the real thing
installed on his system.

Anyway, I understand what you are saying about the review keys and
that's not quite what I meant. Yes, your review keys are helpful,
downright necessary in most games, but that doesn't work in
triditional text adventure games whare you must absolutely know the
correct spelling of words to type the commands.

For instance, let's say you are playing a space adventure. Let's just
say Star Trek for example. You have to go to the Klingon homeworld
Qo'nos. Now, I already know no Sapi voice will say that word
correctly, and the spelling is weird. You need to physically review
the screen and have it spell out q o apostrophy n o s. So you can type
a command like
"ggoto Qo'nos"
into the game. Sapi voices alone often fail to work in those games
because short of building in a screen reader into the game its pretty
hard to look up spellings on the fly. About the best you can do is
have a cheat sheet of commands or spellings open in Notepad to lookup
words you might not know how to spell.

As for the Neospeech voices as I told Philip I think it has something
to do with the C++ implamentation of Sapi. Back when I was using C#
.Net and Visual Basic .Net for my games I had no such issues with
Neospeech Kate or Paul either. However, when I was testing G3D after I
added Sapi 5 support those voices didn't work right. I thought it was
my own mistake, thought it was a bug in my code, but now that Philip
too has this problem with BGT there is something wrong with the Sapi 5
SDK for C++ developers I think.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] old games was, shell shock

2011-03-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Well, that's true to a point. The fact of the matter is most software
for Windows now days is being developed around the new Microsoft .Net
technologies so .Net is an essential dependency for a lot of new
software anyway. That's why Vista ships with .Net Framework 3.0 and
Windows 7 now ships with .Net 4.0 out of the box. It is now a
preinstalled core component of the operating system. So that in and of
itself doesn't bother me. In say three to five years most of the
Windows XP systems will be most likely beginning to be
updated./replaced by newer, faster, and better 64bit systems running
Windows 7 with at least .Net 4.0. So in the long term sticking with
.Net is on a developers side as the extra dependencies that were such
a pain three or four years ago are going to no longer be an issue
since Microsoft has already made them core components for every
Windows Vista and Windows 7 system built over the last three years or
so.

The real big issue I have with the current STFC and Montezuma's
Revenge is the DirectX components I used. Early in 2004 as part of
their DirectX 9 marketing campaign Microsoft unvailed there Managed
DirectX components all designed for .Net 1.1. I like a number of
independant software developers using C# .Net and Visual Basic .Net
migrated quickly to the new API. In 20006 Microsoft was hinting at
Managed DirectX 2.0 to ship with .Net Framework 2.0. It never
appeared. Instead a few days after Windows Vista was released
Microsoft pulled a double wammy on the game developers. They announced
that as of August 2008 Managed DirectX was going to be deprecated and
that there were beginning an all new API called the XNA Framework that
was suppose to work hand in hand with the cross-platform API they were
developing for the XBox 360. Well, when XNA 1.0 hit the scene I
downloaded it expecting to switch games like Monte over to it right
away only to discover it wasn't accessible to a blind developer. You
have to use a program called XAct to create pack files containing
soundbanks which then are loaded into XAudio and played based on the
settings stored in the Soundbank. So if you couldn't see to check the
boxes to loop sounds, to enable 3d positioning, etc you were pretty
much screwed. Which I royally was. Microsoft had dropped the
technology I was using and gave me one that was far less accessible
and I was stuck. At that time SlimDX didn't exist and I wasn't about
to fork over hundreds of dollars to Firelight for FMOD Ex. I might
have been satisfied with Managed DirectX as is, but it turned out it
has a few nasty bugs that Microsoft hadn't fixed and never were going
to fix. So you see in that way my games like STFC and Montezuma's
Revenge were no better off than those being written in VB 6 all
because Microsoft had pulled the rug out from under me by promising
one API and delivering a different one I couldn't use. That's what
prompted my switch to C++.

Of course, things with .Net game development is a bit different now.
Microsoft's idea to cancel Managed DirectX and replace it with XNA
didn't go over with everyone. I can say there were a number of people
on the DirectX mailing list, most of them mainstream companies, who
were up in arms about the surprise API change. All of us were
expecting the release ofMDX 2.0 and Microsoft happily announces XNA
1.0 which meant everybody had to rewrite substantial amount of code to
use it. People were pretty steamed over it. Out of that outrage began
an open source project called SlimDX. It is essentially Managed
DirectX under a new name and written by a core group of open source
developers who wanted to maintain a .Net implamentation of DirectX
that supported DirectSound, DirectMusic, DirectPlay, DirectInput, etc.
In other words everything Microsoft was trashing like yesterdays
garbage in favor of the XNA libraries.

Then, about that time were other open source developers who wanted to
replace MDX with LibSDL. SDL has long been favored as the open source
answer to DirectX on Mac and Linux, and so SDL .Net began. At the time
I looked at it SDL .net wasn't that good. However, now days it is
maturing into a very nice cross-platform API for game developers. Had
I the the source code for Monte or STFC I might well just yank out the
MS garbage, replace it with SDL .Net, and release it as open source.
Indeed, I'm highly thinking of SDL more and more for my games since it
is A, very small, B, they have no problems with redistributing it, and
C, it is cross-platform. I think the only hang up is I have to put
some sort of notice in my licensing info that SDL is free and open
source, but in the main that's not a huge issue considering SDL would
solve a lot of problems with companies like Microsoft changing
technologies as quickly as they change their underware. I'd at least
have a stable API/platform to build my games upon.

Cheers!

Who was the developer of the game? I have a suggestion. In the installer,
the game doesn't ask you what folder you would like to put it in. I put it
in c:'program files, but all of my other games are on c:\users\sky\games
that's because I'm running windows 7.

Hi Thomas,

As I said trucker was the second dos game that I converted to a Windows
game. At the time I was using VB4. I dropped a text box on the form and
put text to it. When I did, I highlighted the text and held it highlighted
for half a second. That was why Jaws saw and read it automatically. Too
bad as I said JFW was the only Windows screen reader that did.

I was once asked what I thought was one special thing about my games. And I
answered that I have always had built in review keys. Mostly I use the
function keys f1 through f12. Like in hangman it will pronounce the letters
and spaces etc. And in my baseball game they speak things such as the
inning, ball and strike count, score etc. So that is one way around the
sapi5 option not having the text on the screen to review with the screen
reader. You just build it into the game. I even did that back in the dos
games. In those I just rewrote the text on the screen and all of the dos
screen readers spoke it.

That is a puzzler about Phillip and the Neo Speech voices. I have always
used the same sapi5 code and it works for all of my AT&T, Microsoft,
ScanSoft, Cepstral and Neo Speech voices.

Isn't that funny that people thing that the sapi5 voices come with the
games?

That is a computer thing, because you have a program associated with that
file type and plays it.
For me with mp3 links I have to right click and save target as.. to get
the file.

Re: [Audyssey] light battles

2011-03-27 Thread Bryan Peterson
I seriously doubt Chillingham 2 is in development. It's been almost seven
years now and the only time anybody hears anything from Bavisoft is when
they suggest that due to the shipping problems people have been
experiencing, not to mention the many bounced Emails people have sent and
therefore the lack of tech support, that the games ought to be made
abandonware and that someone ought to use something like Flopbox or
Sendspace to make the games freely available in downloadable form. And
Bavisoft's response is basically please do not do this.

Hi Shane,
Due to serious technical difficulties, light battles development has
stopped. How ever, lighttech is working on a better starwoars project
gd quest. I don't know when it will be released but it's still in
development. I don't know about super liam2. I'll ask Liam about it
but I don't think it's abandoned. Anyone wanting to know about
chillingham2 the game is still in development. It is still in it's
early days of development, so don't expect the game to come out soon.
Development probably might have been placed on hold, and that might
also be the case for super liam2. Now could anyone send me scc and
maze game?
Thanks.
best regards,
jack

Mmm Haiden, the issue wasn't about expiry but about download limits?

As for sendspace, the expiration is actually timed from the last time the
link was downloaded and is roughly four months, so usually is long enough so

that it doesn't matter, or people download within the time and reset the
expiration limit often enough.

I just have found out of all the various download providers sendspace to be
the most stable and easy to use for both uploading and downloading, one
reason it's the only one I pay money to.

Beware the Grue!

That is a computer thing, because you have a program associated with that
file type and plays it.
For me with mp3 links I have to right click and save target as.. to get

Hi Hayden,

No, but they stop working after everybody and their uncle gets a
chance to download before you do. Try downloading something off a
heavily used list when it is a Dropbox link. I can assure you if you
don't start the download as soon as you see it in a few hours the link
will give you the oh so lovely, "download has exceeded maximum
bandwidth limit" message and you have to wait until his/her account
resets before grabbing the file. Dropbox is a serious pain in the butt
when trying to share something with two or three hundred people at a
time, because when talking about hundreds of downloads Dropbox won't
allow you to do it, and it will only allow so many downloads daily. I
forget what it is maybe 25 per day, but the thing is it is
rediculously low for a heavily used mailing list were downloads can
add up to the hundreds quickly. Dropbox was only designed to share
files and things with a few family and friends, and was never intended

Re: [Audyssey] old games was, shell shock

2011-03-27 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

this does make sense in terms of support, though I will say on the net issue
sinse there are so many other things thaat need net it's not so bad having
it as a dependency (there was one point where almost everything new that
came out seemed to, I remember due to the user accounts crash which I
couldn't resolve back in 2007 that meant I couldn't run net stuff).

At least in the case of Monti, you might however simply list the
dependencies the way you already have on the stfc page, and just say that
the game was a beta version where developement was stopped so may contain
some bugs, and that your not offering tech support anymore for the game.

Anyone who wants to see your complete software and disucss Mota etc can stil
do so, but this does at least mean your older games are stil available for
people who want them even on the understanding that they're not complete
projects and have their issues.

Re: [Audyssey] collection of accessible emulators for the blind

2011-03-27 Thread Ken the Crazy
First, the links to the rom packs are up on the audiogames.net forum for
everybody to see.
Second, to legal and ethical issues, I would have to say that first, I doubt
a company like Nintendo is going to come after a single person or group of
blind people for downloading their roms when dozens of rom sites exist,
especially since they know that one can't get blood from turnips.
Second, I think that people playing roms, even if they don't own a game
console, is good for business. For example, my son has a game boy advanced.
I played the rom of Sound Voyager, and now I have no doubt but that I'm
going to buy that game.
I've also been playing the Mortal Kombat 3 rom on the SNES emulator. I know
I'm not going to get an SNES console and buy Mortal Kombat 3 for that
platform, I'm really tempted to find a version that's made for the PC--if I
can find one that moves the sounds of the players in stereo as the ones for
the SNES do. Therefore, since the roms are much older, and the emulators
are not as good as a real console, I don't see why anybody should complain
about this.
For example, if somebody made a rom of Phrase madness, and, since it was
emulated, had a very slow response time and didn't work as well as the
original, it would be almost like a demo of the game. Sure, you'd have
limitless access, but eventually you'd want the real thing.
The roms pack releases are geared specifically for the blind and will get a
lot more people playing games as long as they don'g get scared about legal
action which isn't going to come anyway.

Dropbox was only designed to share
files and things with a few family and friends, and was never intended
for mass redistribution of stuff as all too many try to do.

Cheers!

Hi Shane,

Well, as for Light Battles the project was abandoned when the lead
developer for Lighttech decided to quit writing games. I don't know
his motivations etc, but one day he said he was tired of writing games
and simply quit and abandoned any and all projects they were working
on. Although, the Lighttech website is still up the company is
effectively out of business as they have no new projects in the works
and no plans to finish current projects etc. They just dropped off the
scene so to speak.

As for Super Liam 2 you'll have to ask Liam that question. He said he
was planning on creating it at one time, but it has been one of those
projects he has never created for one reason or another. Since Liam
has a actual job now I doubt he has the time and energy to come home
and program Super Liam 2 at the moment. I often have that same problem
myself.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] old games was, shell shock

2011-03-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Well, as a gamer I completely understand your point of view on this,
but as a developer I see the other side of the issue too. For one
thing as a professionally trained programmer I like my work to reflect
my skills, education, etc so my personal standards for quality is
fairly high. Nothing drives me crazier than an incomplete or fairly
buggy piece of software that I personally created.

For example, copyright issues aside with Montezuma's Revenge I was
going to have to eventually rewrite that program, or at least a large
part of it, to fix a couple of technical issues I made early on in
game development. One of them was the jump bug were you could jump
through walls, or jump and get stuck in mid air for no reason at all.
Obviously, these problems were fixed when I wrote the G3D engine which
MOTA uses, but I wasn't quite sure how to fix it at the time I was
working on Monte. The other problem was that I used James North's
coordinate system with (0, 0) at the top-left corner of the map and
(50, 50) at the bottom-right corner of the map. This would have been
ok accept when I wrote my trig calculations for the game my
orientation was backwards which means the game mechanics operated
incorrectly. The problem could have been fixed fairly easily, but
Utopia put an end to development before I had a chance to actually
rewrite/correct the game mechanics.so even if I had been allowed to
complete the game at some point I was going to have to correct those
bugs.

With STFC as I think you might remember I lost the source code to the
game during a system crash. As a result I was either forced to release
the game as is, I.E. release the last beta as 1.0, or rewrite it from
scratch. I chose a short-term solution which was to take the last beta
from the website, changed a few voice files to say 1.0, and released
it as is. Sure it is a good game, but there were bugs I never could
correct without the source code which I need to fix it. So as a
developer it was a little frustrating to get a support e-mail
reporting bugs I already knew about, and knowing I couldn't possibly
fix them without a complete rewrite. Plus at the time STFC and Monte
was being developed people were always having troubles installing .Net
and Managed DirectX which got to be a hastle because at the time XP
shipped with neither technology, and they had to be installed in the
exact correct order in the exact right way or STFC wouldn't run.
Although, newerWindows releases like Windows 7 have gone a long way to
resolving most problems with .Net applications its still an issue for
older XP systems. Plus I've had a few e-mails to the effect people
don't want to install .Net on their computer for one reason or
another.

The other issue was a lot of gamers felt at the time I could fix the
.Net compatibility issues simply by creating a streamline install of
all the dependencies which would simplify installing the game. They
were right I could have fixed the problems with .Net and Managed
DirectX by packing them with my installer, but instead of 25 MB the
install size would have jumped to well over 500 MB. This dependency
issue is primarily one reason I began moving away from .Net and
decided to look at C, C++, Java or something else. I didn't think it
was fare to the gamer to install a game with 500 MB of dependencies
attached. Not to mention It was going to cost me more in download
bandwidth, storage space, etc. Let's face it .Net based apps are
bloated beyond belief when you need several third-party managed
libraries that may or may not be preinstalled on your system.

To sum up the issue I don't think game developers such as Josh and
myself necessarily want to take down games that are old because they
lack maret, but do it because the game in question no longer operates
correctly or as expected on the current hardware or OS as intended.
Answering tech support e-mails or repeatedly answering people's
question why this or that game no longer works takes time and energy
away from the current game or upgrade in development. Especially,
since the devlopers usually are the ones the support questions go to
meaning we double aas developer and on the spot e-mail tech support
person.

For example, let's assume that someone writes USA Games support
wondering why STFC 1.2 isn't working. I can talk them through
correctly installing .Net, upgrading .Net if necessary, and getting
Managed DirectX installed. That might take a couple of long winded
e-mails, but eventually we will resolve the issue. Unfortunately, for
me I could have spent that time on STFC 2.0 which will be far better
than 1.x. Its written in C++, uses cross-platform libraries like SDL
and FMOD, and the install size shouldn't be any more than 30 MB or
so. Maybe more if I add music tracks for the various missions.
However, you need to understand my personal frustration at having to
support a technology and programming language I no longer use any more
for game production and I know that something m

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts on Community Projects

2011-03-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Yeah, now that you mention it I do recall Window-Eyes 3.1 and earlier
had problems with the command prompt window. If you wanted to actually
run an MS Dos program with speech you had to switch over to
Vocal-Eyes, Jaws for Dos, ASAP, or some other Dos screen reader at the
time. However, now that most people don't need it current versions of
Window-Eyes such as v7.5 work fine with the Windows XP, Vista, and
Windows 7 command prompt window. I use Window-Eyes all the time with
scare, frotz, and various other dos interactive fiction interpreters
as well as various commandline compilers like MinGW and Javac. So
Window-eyes command prompt support added in version 4, I think, has
been a huge help to me. As I recall they added support about the time
Windows XP was first coming out. Unfortunately, in the main that was a
little too late since all the Dos games like Lone Wolf, Trek 99, the
various PCS Games, your games, etc all began being rewritten for
Windows so command prompt support was just a tad bit late for
Window-eyes users.

As for recorded speech I have to agree with you. It is a lot of work
and isn't at all as flexable as using Sapi 5 directly. Unfortunately,
not everyone has high-quality Sapi compatible voices, and I seam to
recall getting a few not so happy remarks from gamers to include a
better voice with my games. Which only proves most people want
something for nothing.

On Linux the issue with using direct TTS is even more problematic. We
have Speech-Dispatcher which is something like Sapi, but unfortunately
since it is open source if you buy a brand new Del with Ubuntu 10.10
on it the only Speech-Dispatcher speech drivers you get are open
source drivers for ESpeak, Festival, and other open source speech
engines like that. They're not exactly the best quality voices out
there for Linux. Of course you can buy the Cepstral voices, AT&T
voices, Eloquence, etc for Linux which are far superior, but then you
have to go through the hastle of finding the latest Speech-Dispatcher
commercial drivers or recompile them yourself. That I.E. is the
biggest downfall Linux has to aaccessibility in my opinion. Most Linux
users won't fool with it to acquire the better TTS voices.

It is for that reason I've been thinking about writing my own custom
speech API for Linux. As part of my G3D engine it wouldn't be under
the Linux GPL license so could include up to date commercial speech
drivers for the AT&T Voices, Cepstral Voices, Eloquence, Dectalk, you
name it. When they run the package manager like dpkg it would
automatically install my custom commercial speech drivers. All the end
user would have to do is buy and install the commercial TTS engine
they want.

Which sort of brings me around to my point. If I create an RPG game as
we we were talking about earlier there is only two ways to pass along
a large amount of info to the gamer. One, we could display text
directly to the screen either via the Windows command prompt window or
via a terminal window on Mac and Linux operating systems. Two, the
other is to tap into the operating systems TTS speech API and simply
speak outloud all the necessary information. Both have advantages and
disadvantages to consider.

If we display text to the screen that makes the code extremely
portable so that the game can be recompiled for Pacmates, IPhones, and
probably any number of handheld devices as well as various types of
PCs. As someone who isn't strictly speaking a Windows-only user the
idea of making the product as portable as possible is good. Plus for
screen readers that can read a command prompt and terminal window that
gives them the ability to review the screen on demand, look up
spellings, and things like that. That is something you don't get when
shooting the text directly to Sapi. On the downside not all screen
readers handles a command prompt window exactly the same so the
process may be more manual for some than others. Plus I know from
experience one big problem is you have to be careful that the text
doesn't scroll off the screen, or wrap in the wrong place. Text
formatting errors in cases like that are nasty.

On the other hand using text to speech directly resolves some issues
but adds a few problems of its own. With Sapi it doesn't matter how
the text is formatted, weather it scrolls off screen, etc because it
is just speaking outloud what it is given to speak. I'd say the
biggest advantage Sapi is got is that you don't need a screen reader
at all to play said game. Just start the game and it will speak
everything you want/need on demand. Unfortunately, if you want to look
up the spelling of a person, place, or thing in the game you can't.
There really is no way to really review the text word by word
character by character as you would with a screen reader. This was my
biggest complaint with Winfrotz TTS as I could never go back and
review something Sapi mangled or I wasn't sure how a certain named was
spelled. Plus API implamentation changes from platform t

Hi Jim,

That would be Internet Explorer at fault. In a case of mp3s and media
files like that Internet Explorer will often assume you want to
play/stream the media instead of download it. Its been ages since I
used Internet Explorer, but there should be something under Internet
Options that allows you to change this behavior to prompt you to
download or play the file. The web browser I use, Firefox, certainly
has such an option and that's how I avoid certain files automatically
playing when I click on the links.Firefox comes up with a dialog
asking me to open/play or save the file.

Hi Thomas,

Yes, my second game for Windows was Trucker. I put text on the screen and Jaws
would read it. Too bad that Window Eyes and other screen readers would not.
So then I started making games with recorded speech. That is allot of work and
not as flexible as using the sapi5 text to speech engine. I just wish that
everyone could have a high quality sapi5 voice or two that they liked. Now
Pong and the game that I am working on now do not have much speech in them, so
recorded speech could work. Well until the score, log file and record file
that is.

Yes, Blossom Music Center was the out door amphitheater that we also saw Pat
Bennatar at. Great great concert. Just a bit too loud though. Not only did
it sound great, but she was wearing that skin tight black cat suit with the red
ties. She really looked great! And Neil Geraldo had his arm in a cast. Still
played excellently though.
