[Audyssey] DarkBasic Game programming Language

2010-07-18 Thread Robert Montowski
Hello everyone.
I have seen alot of discussion on this list about the best language to program
a game for the blind in.
Some say C++ and others say Visual Basic 6 or VB.Net.
I am taking a different path.
this weekend while yard saling with a friend I ran across a table of software
somone was getting rid of as their son was in the service and asked them to get
rid of his old stuff.
One of the items I bought for $5 was Dark Basic Pro..I think it is version 6.1?
This is the software that lets a novice make a game and compile it down to an
.EXE file they can share with friends.
I have installed this software with my Jaws 9 system and so far it seem to be
accessible?
I am currently downloading all sample code and tips I can find to help me to
start programming in this language.
I have no books with the disk so I am going to be trying this slowly.
What I have seen of the language so far seems pretty easy to understand even
without any books.
If anyone can point me to a place to buy a book for this I would appreciate it?
Could there be a book on the disks I have not found so far?
Has anyone else bought this and played with it?
Are there any lists I can subscribe to for help on this programming language?
thanks for any help you can offer.
When I get my first program started I will find a place to upload it for others
to check out.

Re: [Audyssey] DarkBasic Game programming Language

2010-07-18 Thread Robert Montowski
I have loaded in a simple shooter game in Dark Basic and am looking at the
code.

The audio commands seem quite easy and they support panning...
and volume control...also support playing a sound file once or multiple
times.

also seems to be a command for playing midi files.
The program is most definitely for sighted persons...lots of stuff dealing
with 3D objects..meshes... Mapping pictures onto objects and atmospheric
effects.

Also stuff dealing with physics and terrain.
I am going to ignore all that wonderful crap and just deal with the
sound/music commands.

I may compile the shooter and upload the sample program somewhere soon.

Re: [Audyssey] RISK or STRATEGO?

2010-04-19 Thread Robert Montowski
A year ago I went looking for source code to try to write a Risk game for
the blind.

I found one Risk game that had a most unique capability.
Instead of playing just the standard Risk world game board...it had the
ability to load in other designed play maps.

Some of them were the USS Enterprise and the Battlestar Galactica.
I thought how cool would that game be but was not able to find any source
code for the game or get code from the designer.
I am still toying witht he idea of doing the game as it was one of the games
I truly enjoyed when I still had sight.
but the problem is twofold. Write it for multiple users thru the
internet...a programming capability I am still learning.
Write it with artificial intelligence so you could play multiple computer
opponents...but this is truly out of my ability at the moment.

I don't even know what books to go get and read to try to do AI right now.

Re: [Audyssey] good news: shades of doom

2009-09-18 Thread Robert Montowski

Hello there,
I came into this thread a bit late...so I had to go back and read alot of
old messages to get the feel for what is going on here.

My experience to some of what is being discussed goes like this:
I used to live with a girlfriend in my house.
I also played shades of doom.
she is a born again christian as am I.
she was a bit miffed I was playing this shooting game.
here is how I settled the matter.
As I am totally blind..I turned my monitor off.
even if she walks by my open door, she will not know what I am doing.
as many of these games are very specific about what direction a sound comes
at you from, I got a very nice pair of headphones to wear when I play any
game.
so once again, even when she is standing in my room talking to me..she has
no idea what I am doing unless I have the volume on the head phones turned
way up high.

I consider this leveling the playfield.
when she is on her computer I have no idea what she is doing as she turns
her speakers off.
I can't see or hear what she is doing and she can't see or hear what I am
doing.

No problem here...grin.
religion and computer games can co-exist.

Re: [Audyssey] game arcades in shopping malls and cafes

2009-09-10 Thread Robert Montowski
I am not sure if there are as many arcade room out there anymore. Home
computer systems...playstations and ms XBox systems have really given them a
beating.

Most of the older games took a single quarter.
When I had sight I spent alot of time in one of them near to my house.
the most awesome games were ones where you could play 2 or 4 players against
each other.
I loved playing Gauntlet! it was a 4 sided system. One big screen in the
middle facing up, and 4 players at east, west, north, and south playing
against each other.
there was another one I loved. Can't recall its name just yet. But you had
two Uzi machine guns on the front of the box.
You had to shoot enemy vehicles...and there were buzzards that would fly
thru, if you shot them you got the extra bullet cart they carreid and then
dropped.
Missile command was awesome too! a track ball moved an x on the screen
where you would hit one of 3 buttons to shoot from city 1, 2, 3 at the
incoming missiles.
One game I liked had you sit on the top of a motorcycle and race it on the
screen in front of you. The cycle could tilt so you really got in the
curves close for a faster run.
There was a submarine game that had you look thru a periscope to shoot at
ships passing over you.
Marble madness was another trackball game. You had to race a ball down a
maze avoiding monsters, acid pools and other hazards by rolling the
trackball in the direction you wished the marble on the screen to roll.
Sometimes to get the marble to change direction you really had to give the
trackball 2 good rolls to change direction.
Some of the Jet plane games had you use a high tech joystick. Some had 8
buttons on it.

some were for defense and others were offensive.
One terminator shooter game I played also had a nice machine gun on it.
Even had option to shoot a grenade.
as games got more advanced, the cost went up from a single quarter to 3-4
quarters per game.
the erly big draw games were pacman, missile command, space invaders, and
asteroids.

[Audyssey] Smarter than a 5th Grader?

2009-06-09 Thread Robert Montowski
Hello all,
Last week I bought a game called Are you smarter than a fifth grader for
Windows.
Got it at Target for $5.00
Installed on my ladies laptop and we have been playing it all week.
I am going to try to put on my desktop tomorrow to see if it is Jaws usable.
there is a part in the game where a question is shown on the screen and my lady
read the question and multiple answers to me.
I am hoping this can be done with Jaws.
there is also a part where you pick your character to play in the game.
Male or female..and then from a choice of multiple male or female characters.
this part may not be Jaws friendly. Not sure if you can skip this part either.
I'll let you folks know more tomorrow.

The Realtek HD sound chip that I have in my desktop system has a driver tht

the sound from this chip was awesome!
but then I tryed to get into audio chat rooms for the blind..and quicly
found out the driver was flawed.
when I went to volume control..it was impossible to select my
microphone as my input recording device..

totally impossible.
the entire recording setup scfreen appeared to be greyed out..nothing could
be selected as the input device for recording.

I googled this and found out thousands of folks had the same problem.
I had to disable the onboard chip and put in a yamaha sound card to fix the
problem.
if you could steer me to the driver you say you use and it works fine, then
I might like to go back to the onboard sound chip.

it would be nice to get my PCI slot back for some other use.

Re: [Audyssey] Winfrotz restore game?

2009-01-07 Thread Robert Montowski

Hello all,
I have un-installed Winfrotz TTS and put it back in again today.
I started up PlanetFall and then tried to restore a saved game.
is there some sort of restriction on what type name you give a stored game?
Perhaps the old DOS 8.3 name restriction?
I pointed the program to a folder Called Save..and when I hit enter on
it..it says no files found..and there are 5 saved games in this folder.

with names like Planet_Balcony, Planet_robot, and Planet_Toolroom
with extensions of .Sav
is anyone else using WinFrotz TTS and able to explain to me how to load in a
saved game to pick up where I left off?
g...I love this stuff, but hate dealing with little quirks like
this...sigh.

I tried to just load in the WinFrotz emulator with no speach..
I opened Planetfall.Z5
and then switched to Jaws cursor mode and found no text on the screen other
than the top menu and the status bar.

Oh, this is so annoying.
thanks for any help you folks can offer.

Re: [Audyssey] [Audyssey_Fixed] Winfrotz restore game?

2009-01-07 Thread Robert Montowski

Hello all,
I am not 100% sure how I fixed my problem with WinFrotz?
I did re-install the program, and I started using smaller names for the save
files.

Perhaps I used an illegal character in the name? I'll never know.
I did a game save in Planetfall and I called it:
Planet_Elevator,
and the saved file name was
Planet_Elevator_%286BAD33%_.sav
I was able to load this game back in with the restore command.
So I may just go get major carpal tunnel syndrome playing all these Infocom

thank you to all who offered suggestion on how to fix my problem.
The emulator is working fine now and I am totally happy.

I understand there is an interpretor to play these classic games under Windows?
I think it is called Winfrotz?
I recall from messages posted here about 1 year back that there are two
versions of this program..
a plain one and a talking text to speech version?
Can anyone tell me where I can find these programs to play the infocom games?
many, many thanks
Robert

Re: [Audyssey] deal or no deal

2008-12-18 Thread Robert Montowski

Hello there,
the Deal or No Deal that I have is the Visual Basic 6 source code for the
game.

The game appears to be the british version with their unit of currency.
it is playable witht he Jaws cursor, but really needs to be redone for a
blind user to have full use of the game.
I am still digitizing bits of dialogue from the TV show to incorporate into
the game.

this is taking longer than I planned on.
Sorry
Robert

2008-07-26 Thread Robert Montowski
Hello there,
I am a fledgling Visual Basic 6 programmer.
I ran across source code on
www.planet-source-code.com
site for the game deal or no deal.
I was able to compile this game and use it with Jaws cursor.
it seems to be the british version with pounds rather than dollars.
I am trying to convert this code to full audio for blind folks to use it.
don't ask me when I will finish, as with all others up here...family/life
demands keep me from my programming hobby.
I am cutting out audio clips from the real show to use in the game.
I'll let u know more when I get more of this project done.

[Audyssey] Free: Pen and Paper games...

2008-06-21 Thread Robert Montowski
In my quest to find games I could print and mail to a long distance buddy thru
the mail I ran across this site.
it is loaded with free pen/pencil and paper games that you print and give/mail
to the other person to play.
there is a nice battleship game here that I printed last night and showed to a
sighted friend.
These games are not really for blind folks..sorry. but if you have
kids/teenagers and you wish to keep them occupied on a rainy day or long car
ride..thee games might be for you.
the web site is:

[Audyssey] Game: Daily word jumble

2008-06-16 Thread Robert Montowski
Hello there,

I am offering this game info up to blind folks that might wish to print a word
jumble puzzle to hand to their sighted friends/family.
I am not sure if we can play this game, but it miight be possible with OCR.

Word Jumble works like this:
you get 4-6 words that are all jumbled up.
as you unscramble each word you write it into a box next to the scramble word.
this area of small boxes might also contain some circles.
after you unscramble all the words..you take the letters that are in all the
circles and unscramble them to make the final word.
this word solves a riddle printed beneath a cartoon that is next to all the
scrambled words.

First go to this link:
http://www.uclickgames.com/jumble/online/daily/tmjmf
after the page loads look for a link called jumble daily or daily jumble.
click on it.
when the next page loads look for the word previous.
move your virtual cursor over the letter P at eh beginning of this word.
then route the Jaws cursor to the virtual cursor.
now we need to move the Jaws cursor in small increments till we find the puzzle.
this is done with Jaws by hitting the
shift key/alt key/left arrow key.
and shift key/alt key/down arrow key.
we need to move to the left a small bit and then down a small bit.
I have found that a combination of 2 lefts and then 2 downs, sometimes 3 lefts
and 3 downs works out perfectly.
but start with 2 lefts and then 2 down arrows first.
after moving the jaws cursor right click on that spot.
if the context menu has a zoom in and zoom out, congrats, you found the puzzle.
if not..then go to top of page and repeat the procedure above.
if you see zoom in/zoom out on this menu..look for print and print the puzzle
to hand to whomever you wish.

why did I go thru all this?
I wanted to buy a book of these puzzles to give a buddy.
the book was not all that thick and cost $10.99
with this procedure I can re-create such a book in 3 weeks of daily logging in
and printing on my own.
we might even be able to play this word jumble with OCR?
I will have to try this next.
there is also a kids version of the jumble on this page too.
I am pretty sure the same printing method will work on the kid's puzzle.
So go print some free puzzle sto impress your friends and family.
Robert

Re: [Audyssey] Huge gaming news!

2008-01-14 Thread Robert Montowski
Hello there,
Years back when i still had some sight..I loved to play a simulation type
game called Outpost.
Earth was going to be destroyed by a comet..and a life shipt was launched
into space for a long flight to a new world.
when you got to the solar system you selected..you could launch probes to
see which planet was best for landing.
Once you landed..you had a set amount of equipment you could use to work on
your new city/base.
diggers to dig mines and tunnels for underground dwellings.
bulldozers to flatten ground for future building.
a smelter to make metals from what you dug up.
robot tractors/trucks to move materials from one site to another.
as the colony grew..you could expand north/south/east/west/down.
as you had more materials in your storage warehouses..you could build more
robot trucks/living quarters/agriculture domes/schools/science
labs/smelters/radio towers to control robots for further distances..etc.
ultimately you wished to bring the colony technology up to the point you
could launch another starship to colonize further.
you faced diseases/colony unrest/disasters/loss of resources/etc.
the games had lots of graphics..but all low resolution.
I often thought this would be an awesome game to go all sound/voice with.
this game was played over/days/months..not a single sitting.
it was very addictive.
a later version of this game thru in more things to work with/combat..like
alien civilizations.

Re: [Audyssey] games and emulators

2007-09-23 Thread Robert Montowski
Years back I bought a playstation one emulator..
drat, can't recall the name of it..it was like a $35 program.
You needed a computer running at 800Mz or faster for the thing to work
right.
but it did play the 8 or so PS game CD's I had laying around.
When you started the emulator up..you had to have the emulator CD in the
system..if it was not there the emulator would not start up.
after it started you could take out the CD and put in a PS game CD.
Drat, still can't recall the name of the program...

[Audyssey] Sound RTS question

2007-09-21 Thread Robert Montowski
I have a question for players of the Sound RTS V8 game.

I know building a sawmill will help wood production.
My question is where to build it?
If the town hall is at A2 and the woods are at say A1..
and I have a meadow at A2 and at A1..
will wood be produced faster if the sawmill is int he same square as the woods?
I know that when you get a blacksmith going, you can upgrade the armor of the
foot soldiers or upgrade the saws?
at least I think it is saying saws?
if it is saws, how much better is the wood production with better saws?
is there any advantage to having multiple sawmills?
thanks

Hello there,
I belong to a web site that deals with programming code.
it is called
http://www.planet-source-code.com

one of the most interesting files I downloaded frm this site a short time
back was a visual basic 6 version of deal or no deal.
It was more geared to a sighted person in its interface, and the code was
for a british version of deal or no deal.
The money amounts were in british pounds.
but it did work quite nice, and will work better with a blind person
tweaking the code.
It would really shine if we can get some audio bits from the real show to
mix into the game.

I apologize for not saying this, but I thought I had..

If I put them dead center on the card..it should not interfere too badly

and won't cover the numbers the sighted person will need to read.
but I do thank you for your offer.

Hello there,
Um, I am not quite sure what you are talking about when you say backgammon
and cover the holes with paper?
but i already have figured out how to use the backgammon set I already have.
Normally a set comes with tiles that are round and sort of flat.
Kindof like thick plastic nickels.
one set is brown/black and the other is white.
I can replace one set with actual coins..either pennies or nickels.
and by touch..very, very careful touch..I can read the board.
and know my tiles from hers.
Man it is going to feel great to beat someone at a game other than a
computer game...grin.
Now I have to practice my dice rolling..
double 6's..o yes..

Re: [Audyssey] Blind Playing Sighted games?

2007-08-27 Thread Robert Montowski
Shawn,
Right now I think we are going to take the backgammon board on the road with
us.
It is a game I loved playing years back when I still had sight.
Risk was another game I loved to play with 3 other buddies years back.
that would be an awesome game to play online against other blind players if
anyone ever has tht time to program that puppy.
Never thought of connect 4...will have to buy one and see how I can mark my
pieces with puff paint or something like that.
Bought a friend's grand daughter a game called toss across.
loved playing that one..it is like tic-tac-toe but you throw bena bags at it
to flip the tiles to either blank or x or O's.
The girl beat me more than I won..but it was till pretty fun.
I have an idea for a game..even bought another board game to modify it to
use for my idea.
My lady is going to help me put it all together and then I'll see if I can
whoop her butt playing it.
I just wish I knew how to approach Hasbro with this game as I think it would
work well for sighted and blind folks
but I need to make the prototype first to prove it is a good game
but I do thank you for all your suggestions.

[Audyssey] Blind Playing Sighted games?

2007-08-26 Thread Robert Montowski
A sighted lady friend of mine asked me what games she and I can play together?
As I don't know braille and probably will never learn..it seems doubtful I can
go and buy some sort of game that we both can use.
I had considered teaching her backgammon.
I can take the pieces I would use and replace them with either dimes or pennies.
This way I would know what pieces were mine and which were hers on the board.
I have dice with deep grooved dots in them so I can read the dice when i roll
them.
So this will do for a first sighted versus blind player type game.

But I would like to know what other options I have to either make or buy?
I know I have alot of computer games I could get her into from the Jim Kitchen
line of games.
But we are looking for something we can easily take with us when we travel.
Thanks in advance for any tips/ideas given.

[Audyssey] Sound RTS: Fog of war?

2007-08-15 Thread Robert Montowski
Can anyone explain to me the Fog of War aspect built into Sound RTS?
Is there a way to diminish it?
Perhaps positioning of footman/peasants?
is there a way to prevent it?
what triggers it?
I understand that in times of war/conflict..there is a reduction in the
information that may be coming from a specific area.
but not sure how this relates to Sound RTS?
Once Fog of War hits a particular square in Sound RTS..is it immune to a

[Audyssey] Game Dev: Artificial intelligence?

2007-08-13 Thread Robert Montowski
To any of the game developers up on this list..
Can you recommend any good reading material on Artificial intelligence as
regarding game development?
I have some ideas for some games, but they will all require AI opponents and I
ahve no idea how to tackle that part of the game.
I guess the programming language for the AI does not really matter as long as I
can understand the basic for te AI they are programming for.

[Audyssey] Sound RTS: Congrats to LHXT

2007-08-13 Thread Robert Montowski
I don't know who LHXT is on this list..
but lat night he challenged me to a game in multi-playe rmap 2..
and he totally rolled over my troops.
I thought I was sitting pretty high with 4 farms and 18 footment at the door to
my town hall.
but then the gold ran out and I needed meadows to build some more farms and
find more gold..
I moved one square away from my city and pow...boom...bash...kapow.
His 9 footmen and 3-4 knights tore my men up..sigh.
It was a massacre.
lost everybody...then his men tore thru my farms, town hall, blacksmith and I
had lost eeverything..but not quite!
I still had 1 sawmill way north of my city..he never got to it..just quit..grin.
Guess the game will not declare a total victory or loss till you lose
every man and building?
The destruction was awesome.
So congrats to LHXT whoever you are.
You rule with a mighty fist.

now a bit more humble than before...grin

[Audyssey] Sound RTS: understanding now..

2007-08-12 Thread Robert Montowski
I was told to go look for this file in the
documents settings/name/temp/soundRTS folder
the file is:
SoundRTS-server.log
Jean Luc was right...lots of interesting info in this log file.
I was in a 3 player game..getting my butt whooped badly.
lost my town hall..only had one building left..the sawmill..sigh.
but I had 10 footman and 2 archers in the field.
and 4 peasants..
I figured what the heck..go out in a blaze of glory.
started to roam and ran across another footman and then another town hall.
battled and destroyed the townhall
the player lucius quit the game..and I won..but what happened to player 2?
his nick was RLH?
this log file let me know he quit earlier..guess lucius whooped his but too but
took major damage to his troops?
geesh..was going to sit back and just watch the game kill me off...
never thought I could win it...
grin
Jean Luc, thanks so much for a great free game..
much better than just playing against a computer AI opponent!!!

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS: understanding now..

2007-08-12 Thread Robert Montowski
I can honestly say that when I first tried a multi-player game with Sound
RTS..
sigh..I did quit a few games.
part of it was the frustration of not knowing how to build up my army and
being ticked my lowly peasants were being picked off by 10 footman and 8
archers...g.
The smart thing to do was to stay and watch the scenario play out..
see just how many units and what type they were being thrown at me..
so the next time I play this guy I know how he will attack.
I have not played against any opponent yet who had knights...I know I'll be
taking a beating in that game.
I did hear one player with a stable when I attacked his townhall? keep?
no knights around..but I did hear the horses.
just how effective are knights/horses against footman?
and while I did lose my townhall in that last game...was there anyway for me
to get another townhall?
thanks

Re: [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match

2007-08-10 Thread Robert Montowski
Tristan,
when you mentioned your wireless connection to the net..than things became a
bit clearer to me.
I have a linksys wireless router.
when I turn on my computer in the morn..it gets an IP address of
192.168.1.100
when I turn on my second computer downstairs..it gets an address of
192.168.1.101
each connection to the router has its IP go up by one on the last number.
on some occasions..
my first computer gets an IP address of
192.168.1.101
and supposedly I am the only person on the router at the time.
I may have had a hacker steal some of my bandwidth in a drive by internet
hijacking.
so I made it a point to change the password on the router.
I am sorry if this comes across as off topic..but if we are going to be
playing online games for the blind..this whole IP thing needs to be
explained so programmers and players
canunderstand what is going on when they can't get a game going correctly.

I always believe that a dynamic IP address would change if you turned your

Regarding how to program for internet play, I use a dedicated server for
Rail Racer, not the cheapest solution, but probably the best overall.
Che,
exactly what does this mean to a game programmer?
Did you have to write program code that ran on the dedicated server?
While I have programmed a bit over the last 15 years,
the programming was always little things that allowed me to do stuff on my
comptuer that I could not just run out and buy off the shelf.
When you throw the internet into this mix..I am totally lost on what folks

I had originally thought the same way you do.
but then I found out that with my Verizon DSL account...my IP address is
always changing.
so, while I could test the program on my local network..I would not be able
to test it and make it work like Jean Luc's Sound RTS program.
I have no programming skill to make a program to run on a web site to
re-direct the game like Jean Luc's program does on his web site.
I am going to have to read several books on AI...artificial
intelligence...to learn how to make the drone robots for the player to
battle against.
I often asked Jim Kitchen why he did not take his wonderful games and make
them work thru the net.
Now I see the trouble involved in that request.

Re: [Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match

2007-08-09 Thread Robert Montowski
I thought long and hard on the random factor of the game...
to make the game run exactly on two computers..the random function ov VB6
could not be used.
I am considering letting the robot creation program create a file of random
numbers from 0 to 9.
Perhaps a list of 64, 128, or 256 numbers.
This sequential file of numbers would pull a number from the list each time
a random factor was required.
this will ensure both computers pull the same random number and react the
same on both systems.

This will not in any way be an arcade type game...it will be a strategy
game...a programming game.
Just like the programmers at NASA had to program those robots on mars to
react to conditions by themselves according to certain paramaters...so
willthis robot run its program.
I am considering making groups of commands that the user can cut and paste
into their robots programming.
a particulary good piece of code could be shared to other users.
I even considered making the program create encrypted financial dealing with
other users.
Say I sit down and make a kick-whoop-fantastic piece of offensive code..
and another player wishes my code.
I say I will sell you the code for 20 robot credits..and he says yes.
I cut and pasted the encrypted code into email to send to him.
He gets this code and then clicks on pay for the code.
another piece of encrytped code is created which he send to me.
I click on accept payment.
I get 20 robot credits from him..and I generate a passcode to send back to
him in another email.
He cuts and pastes this code into the program and he is debited the 20
credits and he gets full use of the code.

now one thing to consider..do I give him full use of the code? to maybe
resell as his own?
or perhaps he can sell it but as I created the code I get 25% or 40% of his
sale?

This system has to be weighted so the programmers get their moneys worth for
the hard work they put into the design of good offensive or defensive code.

[Audyssey] Sound RTS: for Jean Luc

2007-08-08 Thread Robert Montowski
Jean,
I just talked to Verizon.net tech support.
it was painfully slow as I think both calls I made went to a service center in
India.
But what I managed to get from the tech guys was this:
Verizon DSL for customers..not business..their IP can change several times a
day.
This may explain why those Ghost server images remain on your web site.
one tech guy told me the IP changes every 5 minutes..not so sure if he knew
what he was talking about their.
I setup the computer last night and checked your site for my IP address about
every half hour..it did not change inthe 90 minutes I tried this.
So I am asking other users who try to host games if they are running DSL
also..and were they having problems with folks nt being able to login to their
server?

[Audyssey] game idea:Battle Bot match

2007-08-07 Thread Robert Montowski
Let me say up front I am not a great programmer.
but I have this Idea I may work on.
It would be a play by mail game.
Each player would design a fighting battle bot to play against an opponents
battle bot.
Each player would design the bot and then program the bot.
The game would be based on a certain amount of money to buy the
parts...defensive and offensive.
when the bot was fully designed..and it would be designed for a specific play
field.
you would click on save and a text file would be generated that you can cut and
paste into an email to your opponent.
He would then load in his bot..and the text file you sent..and click begin
match.
a SAPI voice would then call off the battle to you.
there would be appropiate sounds for the battle.

you would not be able to change the bot during the match.
you would be stricly an observer.
If the programming is done right..both people should hear the same exact battle
on their own computer.
The outcome should be the same on each system.
the text file would be encoded so no cheating would be permitted.
No IP address would be needed...as the only internet you need is the EMail your
opponent will send you.
an editor would be provided to create the playfields.
things like power up pads to recharge the bot, obstacles like walls to block
shots,
maybe some offensive and defensive weapons laying on the playfield to pickup?

this is the basics I have hashed out so far..
any ideas on this from the gaming gallery?

Re: [Audyssey] sound rts other suggestion

2007-07-26 Thread Robert Montowski
If the author of Sound RTS adds SAPI support he
should offer the option of not using SAPI support.
 why do I say this...
I love the sounds built into this game..I love the ability to modify the
sound files in this game to my tastes.
Not everyone who has a windows XP system...has the money to go buy high
quality SAPI voices to add to their system.
and it would ruin the game to have to listen to the default Microsoft Sam
voice while playing this great game.
I was quite pleased to see the author made the wave files with the Daniel
voice..it is quite clear and easy to understand.
It was the same option I chose for a game I am working on.

as far as communication with other players..I offer the same Idea I already
posted.
A pack of 30 or so Wave files with either friendly or aggresive messages
that would play on your opponents computer.
These files could be customized to the users liking.
Having a SAPI voice say I will kill you and over run your kingdom
has no real meat to it..but a human voice screaming that with swords
rattling in the background..now that will inspire fear in your enemy!

I also am asking for two possible additions to the game:
there are times I jus put my server up for others to play.
but I am bombarded with request to join a game.
an option to reply to this request with a Can't play right now wave file
or I refuse your challenge might be nice rather than the challenger just
sitting ther wasting time not know why you did not take his challenge.

next:
Would it add to the game play if when you attack a farm or woodmill,
if you were offered the option to keep the farm or woodmill for yourself
rather than burn them to the ground?

Re: [Audyssey] assistance with sound rts

2007-07-24 Thread Robert Montowski
When I talked about diferent blind games being hosted..I was not clear.
what I meant to say what:
if some of these great games for blind folks were hosted on a mainstream web
site/download page...
they would be reviewed by sighted folks..printed in sighted magazines...get
more word of mouth going on in the sighted/visualy impaired communities.
Having a game for the blind hosted on a mainstream server/web page/download
page would mean it could be seen by
thousands if not hundreds of thousands of folks on a regular basis.

this is not a slam against any of the authors of these great games who host
them on their own web pages.
They do a great job of hosting their own software, but it takes h...what
is the word I wish to throw in here? advertising of the product to getit
rolling.

If I am wrong for suggesting this tell me so.

Re: [Audyssey] assistance with sound rts

2007-07-23 Thread Robert Montowski
There are several things going on here with sound RTS.
1. I played the game for over 1 week till I had the movement down pat
before I dared to join an online game.
2. it took me two days to read over my linksys manual to find out how to
forward port 2500 so I could get online to play agame.
3. I never figured out how to allow port 2500 in my Sygate firewall..so I
just finally had to turn it off toplay the game.
4. not everyone is on high speed internet. those on dial-up might be
thinking this game is band consuming and never tried toplay online.
5. I almost gave up when I was seeing multiple servers in the list when I
tried online games.
and I was not able to connect to most of them.
6. alot of great info has been posted on the list involving this game,
it would be nice if the best of this info was trimmed down and added to the
end of the game manual as tips to playing the game.
7. I have been trying to give this game to many, many folks to play..both
blind and sighted.
perhaps if the game was uploaded/hosted ont he popular download site called.
www.download.com?
Not sure what is required to get a program/game hosted there...but they are
a very popular download site.
8. this game is extremely awesome. it will catch on. word of mouth will
see to that.

Re: [Audyssey] assistance with sound rts

2007-07-22 Thread Robert Montowski
This is going to sound cold..
but you have got the read the game manual over and over again..like maybe 20
times.
If you have never played a RTS game before like warcraft..you might need to
read it over and over again like 40 times.
the hardest part is to learn which keys do what..and be quick at typing
them.
Knowledge will set you free...if u read the manual...grin

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS result

2007-07-21 Thread Robert Montowski
In order to be sure the peasants stay there and get killed off, don't you
have to first put them in offensive mode?

I am having trouble moving around the map with the control key and arrow
keys.
the docs say that tis allows you to pass any obstacles..but it does not
seem to be working for me?
is this option only available after yu pick a man to move?
I saw an earlier thread...saying I went to send men to a place but all they
did was bump into a wall and not move.
Do you literally have to pick a path one square at a time to move the men?

[Audyssey] Sound RTS Lockup

2007-07-20 Thread Robert Montowski
I had my Sound RTs server up last night.
I was not going to play only let the public server up and running.
Well I got an invite for multi-player map 3 so I joined in.
there were 3 people in this game and I could do nothing at all.
only the tab key worked and it said nothing.
Is multi-player map 3 a 4 player game?
Was the game waiting for the 4th player to start?
I saw this same lockup in another game map..think it was map 2?
As long as the game map's had 2 players in the game it seemed to work fine.
I'll keep on trying to put the server up as RCM.
still not sure why 2 other servers were up there with the name of robertm which
I originally chose for my server name?

[Audyssey] Sound RTS: who is J a c o u?

2007-07-20 Thread Robert Montowski
I would really like to know who logged into my server as
J A C O U?
He really kicked my butt!
How do they do it?
I was digging gold and hacking wood for like 6 moves and then my town hall was
over run!
How does a town hall get over run so quickly?
I sent my 4 peasants back to town but it was no use..I los tthe game.
I was not even able to get a barracks built or another foot soldier trained.
g this is most annoying.

[Audyssey] Sound RTS result

2007-07-20 Thread Robert Montowski
I thought the most exciting moment for me would be playing online against
another blind player and winning.
But I was wrong..
Winning was not the most exciting moment in the game.
It was when I figured out what I was doing wrong in all the prior 50 games I
had played.
It was so stupid simple..I am embarrassed I did not figure it out quicker.
I followed the same strategy when playing game 2 and won that game also, but t
did take a bit longer.
I am tempted to tell the strategy...but will wait to see if a thread starts
with other users discussing winning strategies.
As 4-6 other users whooped my butt when I tried an online game..I think they
figured it out too.

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS result

2007-07-20 Thread Robert Montowski
Now here is where I disagree with you.
Because peasants are not easy to get rid of...but they can be dealt
with..having too many peasants in the beginning is a liability.
As others suggested...a way to upgrade peasants to footmen would be nice.
Or perhaps just release the peasants backin the town hall...so you don't
have to feed them anymore.
I am still dealing with this unknown thing..the fog of war!
what makes it pop up in a square? how long will it stay there?

has anyone else noticed this:
when logging into a multi-player server to play a game.
have you seen multiple servers with the same exact name but different times?
are the times how long the server has been up?
several times it seemed the time was being reported weird?
like this
K a L for 4 127 minutes.
was it saying the number 4 twice?
was it trying to say 4,127 minutes?
Sean, you were doing alot better than i!
I have yet to make it past one player game 2 tutorial.
would still love to hear how others are fairing in this addictive game.

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS result

2007-07-20 Thread Robert Montowski
This also did not seem to be covered in the docs.
When you attack an enemy farm..do u take it over or is it burnt to the
ground?
what happens when you attack a barracks or sawmill? or workshop?
do u get that building or is it burnt down?
in a 3 player game..
when you take over the town hall/keep.castle of an enemy..do you get all
their gold/food/wood to use against the other player?
If not..this might need to be addressed.

Is the author of this game on this list?

[Audyssey] Sound RTS- the RCM server is up

2007-07-20 Thread Robert Montowski
It is now 9:23PM easten time in the US and I am putting the
RCM server up.
I won't be playing tonight so don't waste time inviting me in..
The server will be a public server.

I am still confused as to how I can run a server fine..with my firewall turned
off, and my router handling port 2500 correctly.
and still I can't login to the
servers called:
K E L,
P R E N D I S
and of course...
S T E A D Y?
they all report that the server might be behind a firewall or a router.
I was hosting my server earlier..do I need to reboot the system to then join
someone's else server?
thanks

Re: [Audyssey] anyone for a game of sound rts?

2007-07-19 Thread Robert Montowski
I was able to setup my system with a linksys router to act as a Sound RTS
server.
I setup the server so anyohne could start a game.
I entered Game Map3 and someone else joined the game.
I had my butt handed to me in less than 5 minutes.
How is this possible?
Don't all the players start off with the same number of resources?
Can I start the server and then walk away from my system? Never actually
play in any games?
I wish we had better docs on this game.
Since this game is based on Warcraft...would finding some tips on playing
this game on the net help us play this Sound RTS Game?
thanks

Re: [Audyssey] anyone for a game of sound rts?

2007-07-19 Thread Robert Montowski
Some of the features I might like to see in future versions of Sound RTS?
A game save option in single player mode.
When hosting the games..
some sort of logging system to see who logged in..for how long...and who
they played against.
and who won the game.
Perhaps some sort of simple chat system between players?
As all messages are pre-recorded Wave files..perhaps a group of Waves
...maybe 30 of them?
with assorted messages...friendly and aggressive?
The best way to learn a game is to sometimes watch others play the game.
Perhaps a mode in server mode to watch a particular player play his game?
Echo all his moves on the servers screen?
Just some ideas I am throwing hout here.
