Hi Michael: I got past the corpse. I had to have my son click in the middle of the screen with the mouse. Once I did that I was able to get past that point and finish the game. I'm sorry you're still having difficulties with this, I think I stated in an earlier message on this thread that I completed the game on my IPhone, I haven't as yet installed the update, nor do I plan to in the near future as I've completed the game now. Also, I don't use a Mac, I can only assume that the PC version operates in a similar fashion and has the same control set as the PC version. If you are still encountering this issue, I suggest you email the developer who can help you further, it may be the case that older save game versions aren't compatible with the new update, but I don't know. Re: [Audyssey] question regarding emon games
Hi list I dont know if i missed it but where can i download this from? Sent from my iPhone On Oct 16, 2012, at 6:26 PM, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi jessica. I'm not sure about 32 bit vista, though i believe there are workarounds to run older 16 bit applications on the platform. to explain about dosbox, dosbox is an emulator, that is it essentially sets up an old dos system on your computer inside your usual operating system. this is fine for sighted users, however the problem for people using screen readers is that the text inside that emulated dos environment is not windows text that uses the windows graphic toolkit, so therefore it's not readable by a screen reader. frank is looking for a way to make dosbox output readable text, but hasn't found one as yet unfortunately, however I think unlike with 64 bit windows 7 vista might be workable or have a decent work around. I suggest downloading the stand alone eamon deluxe games and giving them a try. as to frank and contact, well he is a busy fellow, and I think several people have mailed him recently. Eamon deluxe is extremely good however, sinse not only is it the old eamon games, but many have been enhanced by frank or had new features added. for instance, as I understand it, in the original text version of the main hall you could only buy buy bog standard 1 d8 weapons from marco, learn spells, and bank your money, thus making your loot pretty useless, and your character stats fairly unalterable. Other options were around in the raphic main hall but even on an old apple Ii, that wouldn't be accessible. frank has however in vi compatibility mode created a fully text version of all the extra services, so with all that gold you earn adventuring you can buy much bbetter weapons, pay to train your character skills or even buy stat upgrades at a efty price. This means completing cash slash style dungeons is far more worth doing as it trains your character up for harder things, which is a great addition to the game, though frank has also includedd a character editer to create and preset your own character stats and several pre installed characters if you just want to play the adventures and aren't interested in building your character up from scratch, though to me, I love seeing my character get stronger over time and thinking that the ggold wil actually help me improve, so I have only used the character editer for purpose of creating strong enough chars to beta test tougher adventures. For one thing if you wrap NVDA using the NVDA controller client library then Dos Box will only work with NVDA. That excludes Jaws users, Window-Eyes users, Supernova users, etc. NVDA is free and open source, but that is beside the point. You are making everyone use NVDA weather they want to or not for Dos Box support. Plus once again you assume, as does every other Windows user, that everyone uses Windows. There isn't just one accessible operating system out there, and if I, or someone else, is going to put the time and effort into making Dos Box accessible the right thing to do is to make it universally accessible for everyone be they Linux, Mac, or Windows users. That can be done, but requires some careful planning. For example, rather than use some proprietary text to speech API like Sapi or Speech Dispatcher, and so on it would be a good idea to link Dos Box to ESpeak, which is cross-platform, and then build screen review commands into Dos Box itself. In short, use a free and open source TTS engine on the back end for speech output, and then build a screen reader into Dos Box itself for reading the screen. That would be cross-platform while avoiding any platform specific dependencies. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] iPhone Audio Games Extant question (was: Just tried an Iphone, my thoughts and questions)
I play games on the iPhone and I love the ones there. However I do wish there were more especially ones which could be like clue or game books. I would be a supporter of games if you created them. Sent from my iPhone On Oct 10, 2012, at 8:51 AM, Richard (AudioGames.net) rich...@audiogames.net wrote: Hi Dark, Audyssey Thanks for your interesting review! Much appreciated. Our questions are these - for you, Dark, but also the Audyssey community... - would you be interested in an iPhone version of Extant (and then a full version game, not just the tech demo)? - would you be interested in audio games for (mobile) iOs (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) devices? - would you be interested in audio games for (mobile) Android (for example Samsung Note, Galaxy) devices? - how many of you play the adio games that are currently in Apple's AppStore - and what do you think of these? On a basic level I was impressed. Some of the gestures I found more difficult than others, for instance the three finger swipes I didn't quite get the kknack of, but others were quite natural and I suspect I'd get more used to it in time. The functions of the phone seemed fairly doable too, indeed for kicks I tried searching the ap store for king of dragon pass, managed to find it and read the game details, (I didn't play it because obviously the chap who's phone I was examining didn't necessarily want the game), though sinse it's games and gamebooks I'm mostly interested in on the Iphone, I was pleased that was doable. the internet I found a little more problematic, I tried searching for audiogames.net, and had a bit of trouble navigating google correctly. I also got a play with seri which seems a usefull system, though I was disappointed when i was testing it's speech recognition that though it did! know the word dalek, it didn't recognize cyberman and read it as spiderman! :D. I also asked about commands to flick voice over on and off, lock the phone for making phone calls etc, and all of that seemed doable. The only thing I didn't like the sound of is the fact that I can't just copy my music and audio books onto the phone, sinse one reason I wanted one was to serve as an effective music and audio player, but apparently apple objects to this so it requires silly itunes, which i'm obviously going to have to investigate. That is the one downer I found, indeed I might considder just buying an mp3 player separately to do that job if Itunes isn't going to behave. Voice over did look fun though, and I'd actually love to see some audio games that make full use of screen position in this way, for instance I can imagine playing a stratogy battle game could be far easier with a touch screen sinse you could get physical positional information about the various units relative locations and the map, similarly to reading soemthing in braille but with the information being conveyed by audio. I'm now of course going to have to check out A, Itunes, and B, pricing, sinse an Iphone 5 would be very expensive in the region of about 500 quid apparently, and I'll C, check whether my current phone contract supports the Iphone and has enough internet to make things work, (thus far I've not used net so haven't got a very net heavy mobile phone contract, though it is a cheap one and comes with a lot of free minutes). it does however look like a workable solution and a lot of fun, indeed sinse if everything goes as planned next year I should be studdying voice in Bermingham conservatoire, I would be doing a lot of commuting on trains, and it'd be usefull to have something small and portable. Previously I've used my laptop, but the battery here is pretty dead, and i would! like to try a lot of the iphone games, and more especially gamebooks. Beware the grue! Thanks so much Sent from my iPhone On Sep 29, 2012, at 12:24 PM, john jpcarnemo...@comcast.net wrote: That depends on what you want to do. If you just want to trigger on a line of text to do something, then the following should help: Basically, in the trigger dialog (control shift eight) there are four important fields. The first is the trigger box, where you paste in the line of text you want the client to trigger on. The second is the send box, where you enter the text you want sent the match. The third important element is the send to list. Here, you select where you want to send whatever you have in the send box. You could use this to send to the mud, or a plugin, for example. The last important item is the omit from output checkbox. I'll explain in more detail below: When you create a trigger, you are telling your client that when it recieves a certain line of text it needs to do something. That something could be send a command to the mud you're playing, send something to a scrip file, or just stop the line from showing up on your screen. The trigger box (the edit field you are in when you hit add) is where you tell the client what line of text you want it to trigger on. Usually, you'll want to copy and paste in a line of text from the mud. If your text contains variables (a name, a gender or an object) you can replace that portion of the string with * (asterisk). For example: Bob tells Joe to go to the movies. If you wanted the client to trigger on that line, but make sure that the name bob could change, you would use: * tells Joe to go to the movies. Once you have the trigger on text set up, you need to tell your client what to do with it. Press alt s to move to the send box, and type out what you want to have the client send. Let's say you wanted to make a trigger to cast a heal spell on a person when they asked. Your trigger would look like: Trigger on: * asks for a heal. Send: cast heal %1 The %1 in the send box references the * you put in your trigger on text. The number after the % tells the client which asterisk to look at. In this case, you wanted the name of the person asking for a heal, so you would use %1. If you had multiple asterisks in your trigger on text, the number after the % goes in order. Next, press tab twice to move to the send to list. Here is where you specify where the data in the send box goes. There are several different options, but the two I'm going to cover are world and script. World is the first option in the list, and it tells the client to send something to the mud. If you were to use the above example of a heal trigger, you would want to set the send to box to world, so that the mud gets the line cast heal %1 Note that the %1 will have transformed into whatever was in the asterisk in your trigger on text. The other option I'm going to discuss is script. This tells the mud to send your information in the send box to a plugin. I'm not sure exactly how it works, so you'll have to experiment with that part. The last thing I want to go over is the omit from output checkbox. This, in my opinion, is one of the best features of the client. If you put a line of text in the trigger on field, and check this box, the line you specified will not show up on your screen and will not be processed by plugins. This is really good for spam management. Hope this rather lengthy message helps, John. Re: [Audyssey] Miriani player base
Where do you play Sent from my iPhone On Sep 14, 2012, at 4:49 PM, Meka White, LMP m...@melodicmassage.com wrote: An older email asked why Miriani's player base has gone down. I cannot speak for others, but as a former Miriani player, I can tell you why I no longer play. The game says that it is rp-enforced, and for a long time, the staff enforced it wonderfully. These days, anything goes and if your ship happens to get blown up, or someone stuns you on a ship for hours because they are just having a bad day in real life, then there is nothing that you as a player can do about it. You're told to suck it up. 'It's the way I play my character! Don't judge me! It's how a pirate acts!' Without going in to detail about just how much bull that is, I will simply state that it is annoying. It isn't just that something in game has happened, but it's preventing you from continuing to play. There is nothing that you can do when a team of griefers-and that is exactly what these problem players are-decide that it is their duty to pull their apparent rank and become excessive about what they do. It is difficult to deduce what is or is not appropriate role-play on Miriani because rules are not in place to form some kind of standard and anything goes. Insults are freely given over the chatter channel that some will be quick to chime in 'but that's how I rp!'. Except that it's worse than what you find on Internet forums and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I am a huge fan of role-play. I have done collaborative story writing for years via email, forums, mushes, and instant messengers. I am all about good characterization, fun plots, and building up a conflict. Conflicts can be fun, and if done well, even if you come out on the losing end, you can still feel good about your performance in the play. Unfortunately, Miriani has become a pool where griefers freely swim and the life guards do absolutely nothing. I blame the staff more than anything. People will generally play within the parameters that you set for them. If they don't, and continue to be a nuisance, then staff should bring action down. How are players supposed to know what they should be doing if staff don't step in? Of course, I suppose I assume that the average person isn't going to go out of their way to be a complete jackwagon and would try to be decent, but what do I know? There are so many features of the game that I truly enjoy. But the griefers and the staff's complacency in dealing with them is why I do not play there any longer and have found something else. Use the 'smarket' or 'soulmarket' commands for help and usage. - Necromancers above level 30 now get alternating int and wis boosts to stat caps for each level, similar to mages and clerics. - Make demon familiars a little more powerful with higher soulstone level. - Open more player shops and improve the shop unsold listings for owners. - Add 'help search' command, to make specific help pages easier to find. - You can now buy the ability to use bank commands from anywhere in the game for 1000 credits. - Add the 'unfollow' and 'disband' commands to help disband groups. It sounded neat, and it is pretty cool, but without that play experience, I am actually unsurprised at the limited response to the voice acting request. I was under the impression that the menu in standard game play would still pause, and suffered a miserable death as a consequence of having to talk to somebody. As far as I'm concerned, it's grossly unfair that we can't pause the game for any reason. I haven't had much experience with the new weapons in multiplayer (affect of the previously mentioned death), but they seem to be nice in the solo maps. However, the more weapons we get the more crucial it becomes that we have an updated weapon guide to make sense of it all. I do, however, like the way the weapons are organized now. Not just on smart phones and tablet PCs but the next generation of Windows laptops and desktops will begin shipping with touchscreens as well. The way Windows 8 is designed instead of a start menu we now have a start screen with icons tiled across the screen in rows and columns like a table. Perfect for a touchscreen, or mouse but a pain in the rear if you try to get to those icons using a keyboard or buttons on a smart phone. However, love it or hate it I think touchscreen technology is here to stay. As for Apple's iPhone I personally don't think it is too bad. Yes, there is a learning curve involved, but like everything in life practice makes perfect. I understand your frustration, but I also sense perhaps you just gave up rather than sticking with it. A lot of us who have used iPhones just stuck with it until we figured it out. Rather than getting frustrated and throwing in the towel we practiced at it until we got good at using the phone. Cheers! Sure, Apple try and do the voiceover app, but when I tried an IPhone it was pointless and useless since the interface was purely all touch screen. How other blind people manage with it is beyond me and goes straight over my head. I tried it for two weeks before I got impatient with it so I went back to the lovely button operated Nokia and Talks setup again. I'd support Simbian myself, but looks like it's a trek down C++ lane, which doesn't sound appealing. The fact that so many VI people have found a way to conquer that is rather impressive to me, and if that's the case, then so be it. But I think it's rather unnecessary to have to do that when the business itself should make more of an effort. Just because they don't know we exist, or choose to believe we don't exist, doesn't make us go away. And if companies continue to design things in their own eye happy way, in another twenty or thirty years it's probably unlikely we'd be able to use anything in the mainstream market and we'll be right back to square one with specially designed excessively expensive products and the like. That's only my opinion, I know tons of you won't agree, but this debate goes slightly away from games so I don't want this to turn into a full blown argument as to which is the best operating system to work with. That will prevent people from commenting on articles, making suggestions, etc but will also get rid of the constant spam to the website. We decided to upgrade to a 3d first-person format, and as can be expected got a rather mixed response from the gaming community at large. Some loved the idea, and others were decidedly upset by the change. So we've been trying to think of a fair solution that would make both sides happy and would fulfill our obligations to those who preordered Montezuma's Revenge in 2008. What we essentially have been considering is developing two separate games in tandem. The first would be a side-scroller named Mysteries of the Ancients, a substitute for Montezuma's Revenge, and the other would be our 3d FPS game, Temple of Life. As the Tomb Hunter series of games are intended to be an accessible clone of the Tomb Raider games I would like them to take on a 3d first-person format to closely resemble the game play of the Tomb Raider games. So that left us with the question of what exactly to do with Mysteries of the Ancients. Well, we have come up with an idea we believe you will like. Essentially our solution is to develop a game more closely resembling the original concept and the game you preordered. Obviously, given the copyright issues at hand we can't create Montezuma's Revenge per say, but there are a number of classic video games such as Montezuma's Revenge, Pitfall, etc that have a decidedly Indiana Jones type theme to them. So while we can't create Montezuma's Revenge exactly it is possible to create something that offers the same sort of game play and to be honest something we should have thought of doing a long time ago. In brief what we have been looking at doing is developing a side-scroller similar to the Pitfall games where you are in a Mezo-American jungle exploring caves, ancient temples, and pyramids looking for treasure and artifacts. A long the way you will encounter various snakes, giant spiders, skeletons, spirits, etc. There will be the usual traps you find in such games like lava pits, fire pits, giant spikes, chasms, poison darts, rolling boulders, quicksand, etc. Last but not least, it will be a 2d side-scroller with plenty of ropes and vines to climb on, stone staircases to ascend and descend, ledges to jump up and grab, etc. So in short many of the things you have come to know about MOTA will still be there with a slightly different story and setting. One of the major changes I can see here is while the Tomb Hunter games like Temple of Life will feature a female character, Angela Carter, we're thinking of using a male character for Mysteries of the Ancients. As you might expect he'll be the typical Indiana Jones type character who is a historian, archeologist, and adventurer. Although, we don't want to copy the Indiana Jones character too closely given Lucas is a fanatic about copyrights, but we don't believe being able to find Indiana Jones leather bull whip somewhere in the game is outright steeling George Lucas's copyrights. In addition to the classic bull whip we've been thinking of adding some Spanish weapons and armor to the game since we'd imagine that swords, daggers, knives, shields, spears, and body armor could possibly be left behind in various ruins. Plus all of the native Americans that lived in Central and South America made tools and weapons out of bone and stone. Those would be easier to find given that iron weapons will rust but stone weapons are practically impervious to decay as long as they aren't exposed to the weather. That leaves us with one more issue we haven't decided upon, but is open to discussion. That is the sf element of the game. In Montezuma's Revenge, for example, it was sort of a combo of ancient weapons and magic with some decidedly technological traps like electric walls, vanishing platforms, and things like that. It was a bit strange having torches, swords, rolling boulders, existing side by side with technological traps that have no explanation for their existence. We're thinking of being decidedly low tech for this game as we're not at all sure that such things should exist in an ancient ruins unless there is a realistic explanation for their existence the way Lucas did in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Anyway, we're looking forward to your thoughts. Is this something you would consider a reasonable compromise for Montezuma's Revenge? [Audyssey] swamp questions
Hi list: I have a question or two please with regards to swamp. 1. If we get something or find something and we get killed, is it right that we lose the stuff we were carrying? 2. if we make it to the safe zone, do we always keep it then or what should we do with it? 3. if we quit and then get killed do we lose it? 4. I tried to do a quest. I was told to find a charcoal filter, but when I went to the pet store,, I went to the fish supply area but I heard nothing. Can someone please explain on how to do a quest? Am I supposed to hear something or how do I do it? Do I bring it back then to the safe zone when if I ever find it? Is there a certain place I bring it? Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Cross over Sent from my iPhone On Feb 1, 2012, at 3:38 AM, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote: Hi everyone, I've got a real quick question for you wrestling fans. As many of you might remember I've been working on a turn based wrestling game similar to the old Piledriver game for Dos accept my version uses a more up to date database of superstars from the WWE, including both male and female performers, as well as some sounds and music. Plus it is cross-platform and runs on both Windows and Linux operating systems. Which brings me to my question. As I am currently working on adding entrance theme music etc to the game right now it is sometimes hard to decide on which entrance theme music to use as the performers tend to frequently change their entrance music on a regular basis. In most cases I'll simply use the most current music if that particular performer is still signed to the WWE. The problem is that there are a number of performers who have quit the WWE and have signed with another promotion like TNA or Ring of Honor. For example, Mickie James was one of the most popular divas during her run in the WWE and during her Diva's title reign. However, in 2010 she quit the WWE and has been wrestling for TNA for the last couple of years. I have something of a choice to make in a case like that. Should I use the most current entrance music from the WWE, or should I grab the entrance music from TNA to essentially bring the entrance music completely up to date? Which brings up another but interesting question. If you think I should use the TNA entrance music should I then gear this game towards a crossover game not focusing specifically on WWE, TNA, etc or Ring of Honor but make this sort of an all star wrestling game with a huge roster of WWE, Ring of Honor, and TNA performers? If we do decide on a crossover type game I could in theory add a little note beside each wrestler that this performer is currently signed to Raw, Smackdown, TNA, etc. What do you think? --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Where do I get this test song pack from Sent from my iPhone On Jan 31, 2012, at 11:46 AM, Jeremy Kaldobsky jer...@kaldobsky.com wrote: Hey guys, It's been a few days since I've been around. I had a really rough weekend and spent Saturday night until Monday night sicker than I have been in many years. Apparently I picked up some sort of virus that had me really messed up. I'm not better yet but I am feeling about a million times better than I was, haha! The delay slowed down me releasing the next testing version, so here it is! Just as before, you will need to have Kai's testing sound pack although I'm sure most of you already have it if you were playing on the testing server before. www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/Swamptest3.zip It still has a way to go but I've made some changes and tried to fix a few things. The blank missions shouldn't show up now but it hasn't really been tested. The rewards for the missions has been scaled differently and now they should properly give the amounts they say they will. Some of the stat points were changed. Chain saw mastery is different and both of the sniper skills were changed. I didn't get around to changing the vulcan minigun's skills yet but I plan to. The missions are still pretty much the same, but I have adjusted a few things. For starters I think I may have fixed the issue of supply crates not always showing up. It was super rate to begin with, but I think it's solved. The warehouse has a few more windows placed around the outside walls. To keep things more interesting, the order that things break has now been randomized to some extent. It's not truly random but by adding in variation it will prevent things from being to easy to predict. Mini missions, or quests, have been added finally. They work in both maps although the first map has far more available. From the safe zone you can spend 25 reputation to accept a quest and the reward is 250 reputation when you return and donate the item. All mini mission items will be found inside of a building but you won't know exactly where. The panic and looting that took place when the zombies first arrived has left every building a complete mess, so you will need to look around. Also, an item you are asked to find might be something that 2 or 3 places would sell. When this happens, you won't know which of the businesses it has been hidden in and you may have to check them all before you finally find it. If you can't find your item or really don't like the one you've been asked to find, you can just pay 25 more reputation to get a new quest. Leaving the game will not save your mini mission or any quest items you're carrying, so make sure you donate them first. Also, changing maps will cause you to lose your current mini mission. Re: [Audyssey] Developer needs help making game accessible for the blind!
Does this for the Mac computer or iPhone Sent from my iPhone On Jan 10, 2012, at 11:24 AM, michael barnes c...@samobile.net wrote: Hey, All. The developer of Oubliette needs help with a few things that would make the game more accessible for the blind! Down below is the email that he had sent me to get more information about different content in the game to work with voice over. So if you have any thoughts on how to help him please email him with your thoughts at jg...@gabysoft.com Now here is the message. The battle is real time but controlled by the speed settings. At the 'Normal' setting (Slider at 50%), the monsters will attack once every 2 seconds. At the slowest speed they will attack at one quarter that speed (once every 8 seconds). At the highest speed, they will attack at 4 times that speed (once every half second). When you use one of your characters to attack, there is also a 'cool down' period before they can attack again. This time is based on the characters' dex. The 'cool down' period is also adjusted when you change the game speed. So if you set the speed to the minimum, the characters' 'cool down' period will be 4 times as long as it is at the normal setting. However if you tap on a monster (double tap in your case) it will bring up a screen that shows the monster's information and the game will pause at that point. So if you want to think about your next move, double tap on the monster and that will pause the game. When the battle starts, there is a screen that is displayed which simply informs them that they are about to battle. In version 2.0 there are actually 2 possible screens here, one for normal battles and one for secret rooms. The title of the screen will tell you which is which. The battle will not begin until your first character takes some action. At this point you can double tap on the monsters to see what they can do and adjust the game speed depending on what you are facing. There is really nothing else that the user sees before the battle begins. While the battle is running, there are messages that are displayed in the message box, but for the most part you can probably ignore these. The monsters will glow when they attack and I am not sure how to represent this. I can have it display a message when the monster attacks, but you would have to tap down in the message box to hear it. It would be nice if there were a way to have the Voice Over speak some text on command, but I have not found it yet. The player list on the right has a 'cool down' timer graphic to show when each character can make their next action. Also the characters' hit points are shown in red if the character is damaged, and if he is in duress (e.g. paralyzed, stunned, dead, etc.) a graphic is displayed indicating that fact. I am not sure how to represent these to the blind. Looking at the Voice Over documentation it appears that I can set my own text for what is said when you touch a particular item and I am going to look into possibly adding some additional spoken information when you touch one of your players. The maze on each level is not random, so once you learn where everything is on a given level, it will not change. There is no 'end' to a given level, each time you enter a level it is repopulated with monsters and treasures. Each level has stairs to other levels (sometimes multiple stairs). Some, but not all of the stairs are shown on the maps. I am really not sure how to represent the maps for the blind, but I will give it some more thought. Perhaps instead of a map at all I can display a list of the features (i.e. stairs, pits and chutes). Since the maps generally do not include the location of all the features I am not exactly sure what to show. I wouldn't mind giving all of that information to actual blind players, but I would rather it not be available to players who can see. I am thinking that it might be very useful to have a help page which explains some of these things that will be displayed the first time the user turns on the 'Voice Over Support'. If you could put together a list of things that would be useful to blind players that I could include on this page, that would be most helpful. -- Email services provided by the System Access Mobile Network. Great idea Sent from my iPhone On Dec 31, 2011, at 11:21 AM, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Phil, That's probably true. Although, I think I have an idea how to resolve this sticky situation. What I could do is write a one level demo, a concept demo like Philip Bennefall did with Perilous Hearts, and see how people do with it. If I get a lot of feedback this game is too hard, its too complicated, I can't figure it out, whatever then we can revise it by creating a 2d side-scroller if need be. However, I think one of the problems is just fear of the unknown. People doubt what they can do or what is possible until they try it. I know before Che released Rail Racer there was all kinds of erroneous assumptions about the mouse that were based on nothing more than lack of personal experience. I can't use the mouse I'm blind. The mouse is too hard to use. I tried using the mouse with application x and couldn't get it to work. All of those assumptions were proven false. The mouse is a programmable device and it will do whatever the application tells it to do, and Rail Racer proved that it is and can be just as accessible as a keyboard if supported properly. However, what we found out after Rail Racer was released is most blind gamers didn't even know how to properly hold and move the mouse let alone use it in a game. So there was an educational curve involved in getting it accepted by a large number of VI gamers, but it did happen. Now, days games like Rail Racer, Swamp, etc are popular because they go beyond just the keyboard approach to input and those users are requesting more developers to provide mouse support as well. So what really needs to happen here is break the ice by releasing a fully playable demo with a full 3d environment and take it from there. Let's see how many of those people truly have actual difficulty with it and how many are willing to take the bull by the horns and try something a bit different. Cheers! Usually it is much easier to move around. Many people trying out Shades of Doom and Sarah give up because of their difficulty in moving around. They get frustrated, running into wals and don't know which way to go. While some people have good memories of where they are and can picture the whole level in their minds, many people do not have this ability. For example when I worked with Carl on Maze Haze for DOS we both created five mazes. I could easily get around mine as I remembered exactly how to get from the start to the finish. But when I tried Carl's, I was completely lost. I had to brail out maps of his mazes in order to figure how to solve them. Carl could not complete my mazes until he plotted them on a pizza box, making walls out of push pins, which took him many hours. But some of our customers could do the mazes in minutes. It is a skill like having perfect pitch. In our DOS bowling game we used a C note to designate the point where you should hit the space bar to throw the ball. Some people with perfect pitch could anticipate when the C note was coming next and consistently got perfect bowling scores. So in conclusion, there are probably more people who would like a side scroller than their are those who would like a 3d game. At first I was willing to consider both, but after having spent so much time with the game I'm tired of it. I don't want to write it one way, and then turn around and rewrite it another. That's, quite frankly, just too much work. So I'll do it one way or the other, but not both. Which brings me to the other point you made here. You talked about continuity. As you know Tomb Hunter is going to be a series of games much like Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider is a series of books/movies/games. If I want to do that it would be better to make them all FPS or all side-scrollers rather than start out with a side-scroller and switch to an FPS later. I'd prefer to just start out with an FPS and design the games that way since that's what I was creating a 3d game engine for in the first place. Finally, whenever there is a dispute or argument about something the answer I hear from people is write both or put in a toggle to turn feature x on/off. No one seems to stop and think how much longer that takes, or thinks about the effort involved to satisfy every single person's desires. I truly like how you put that Thomas. I feel same as you and feel that you shoul d create what you will take pride and heart in. Technology has changed and gaming for the blind has to. For those who don want a fps game offer a upcoming title as compensation. I can say with all of my heart that I have less then a interest in a side scroller. Super Liam was fun a few times but once I memorized movements and grid and won I never looked at it again. I respect your dilemma but since it is your project and James never finished his commitment, I feel you should do what your heart tells you to do. Not only that but when you took the project on you truthfully owe nothing. It is so frustrating to see how hard it is for blind people to move forward and go with new and better. Even if you just didn't change a thing, created a few more levels with different layout along the lines of the current beta's, the game would be more than passable, and myself I have confidence in your abilities that more would be added, I remember all the ideas you were discussing for the castlevania type side scroller last halloween for example. So, while I wouldn't mind a 3D game, to me it would lose a lot of the ground mota has already gained, and the chance to do some unique stuff in audio. No, you can't have a 3D puzle, but there hasn't yet been a tyles puzle in an audio game. nor timed switch door events, pressure pads to be jumped or even just exploration of a vertical maze in 2D. as I said if you really just want to create a 3D game and forget side scrollers, well I'll look forward to playing it, but I stil think we'd miss out on something in the process, not the least seeing the engine you've worked so hard on in action in a propper game. Now, I am well aware the original Castlevania series were all side-scrollers. I am tempted to do that given that it would fit the genre, but I'm also eager to sink my teeth into a full 3d environment. I thought when I went for the springboard moonsault that Beth Phoenix would move out of the way and Kelly Kelly would just splash into the matt, serious screw up there, or that I'd knock Beth down, but not be able to capatalize on the move. As it happened Beth was stunned long enough to go for a victory roll and pin her to the mat for a full three count. Now, one thing I'd like to do here is work on the general AI system to play to an opponent's strengths. That is if a wrestler is good in a skill set to tend to favor those moves over other less skilled moves. For instance, Beth Phoenix is a strong female wrestler and tends to favor powerhouse moves such as powerbombs, various bodyslams, and suplexes. In fact, her finisher is the Glam Slam which is basically just a press slam. Now, someone like Kelly Kelly is small and light. She's almost 50 pounds lighter than Beth Phoenix, and she usually does well with hit and runn attacks such as small punches, spin kicks, missile dropkicks, etc. Also her small size and stature makes her more naturally built for arial type moves like flying crossbody attacks, springboard moonsaults, etc. You have to play to a performers strengths if you want to win a match. Its similar to the old Dos Piledriver game in concept, but I hope to improve upon that design as I go along. Anyway, Tonight I was testing the game and had a very cool wrestling match I'd like to share with you all. It was a WWE Diva's match between Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix. It was based on their title match at Summer Slam, but actually better as I was playing it via the game. The game started out with me, playing as Kelly Kelly, and I thought I'd try and soften Beth Phoenix up with some punches, kicks, and take her down to the matt with some takedown moves like leg sweeps or an arm drag. Unfortunately, for me Beth Phoenix managed to get the upper hand and started handing Kelly Kelly's butt to her. Beth drove a knee lift into Kelly's face, and then dropped her to the mat with a spinning powerbomb. From there she basically tossed Kelly Kelly around the ring like a rag doll with a series of slams, suplexes, and threw in a few extra kicks and punches here and there for good measure. Realising I'm like getting nowhere real quick I decided to take a page out of Eve Torres's playbook and go for some high risk arial moves. As soon as Kelly manages to escape the beating Beth is giving her I climb up onto the second rope, and perform a springboard moonsault. Kelly Kelly moonsault's off the second rope and hits Beth Phoenix like a cruise missile and Beth crashes to the matt. I then catch Beth Phoenix in Kelly Kelly's classic victory roll, and pin her for the three count. That's how the Glamazon crashed and burned. What do you think about that match, eh? That is way, way, way too many people asigned to a single task. You need perhaps only one lumberjack at most and as the game progresses you will want to give your people other jobs like cook, farmer, fisherman, hunter, etc. Basically, balance it out a bit. The only job you need a lot of people for is peasant as they are the people responcible for carrying and stocking supplies while your skilled workers cook, farm, build, or make stuff. Well this is quite fun and wish I would have started when it first came out Thanks for all the help and sorry for all the questions. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Sunday, August 07, 2011 4:27 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Cast away final help Hi Mike, Yes. If you want your people to eat you have to have at least one cook in your party. As your food supplies get low you will need probably at least one hunter to hunt for wild game, one or two fisherman to bring in fish, and you'll want to build a vegetable farm and farmer to get started with the basics. As your community grows you will need a wheat farm, baker, mill, and all the jobs associated with making and baking bread. Plus making wine will become helpful as well. Castaways is a strategy game, and you are going to have to plan and build your community in such a way that everything gets done without your people starving to death, getting sick from illness, or being rampaged by goblin hords.
